The staff here are some of the nicest I've ever encountered in this city - truly lovely, always excited to help you out. It's clear they put a lot of effort into the overall vibe of this place and it shows. The produce is high quality and fresh, the specialty products also quite good. The produce is a major draw here - it's regularly restocked, and there's a huge diversity of options. They also have a huge vat of soup several days a week (often clam chowder, chicken noodle) that is very reasonably priced and tasty. It will only be available until a couple hours after lunch. When the stars align and soup is leftover it's occasionally free at end of day. The only downside here is the prices - It seems like a dice roll is made every restocking to see if the prices will be normal or very high. * For fruits and veggies, stick to things that are in season, don't forget to sacrifice a goat to the deity of your choice for luck before making a large purchase. Off season the prices can be quite high. * Their "grab and go" meals are priced fairly and are of good quality. Spaghetti and meatballs, and the salmon salad are favorites of mine. * Seriously, don't sleep on the soups. The clam chowder + the discounted sourdough or French bread is a winning combination. * Lots of organic, healthy niche products. * The mushrooms aren't cheap but they're really fantastic, and of varieties that are hard to find. * Cheese is surprisingly fairly priced. * For meat, just avoid it. Are your markets here to stay; or are you, in the main, just another little guy going against all odds to make a little bit of money in a gentrifying neighborhood by charging people ridiculous amounts of money for fresh organic produce, a large percentage of which they'll probably end up dutifully throwing in the compost bin or allowing to wilt in their gorgeous Sub-Zero refrigerators in their beautiful new exclusive apartments in a neighborhood that's named Dogpatch--for now--because they're busy flying around the country (and the world) for their luxury-green-travel marketing jobs? Yes, I like some other overpriced independent markets in San Francisco. Yes, your workers are friendly. But I'm sorry, you charge way too much for simple store-made snacks like hummus with carrot and celery sticks. The hummus was sour and gross, and the celery sticks weren't fresh. I thought about returning, but why? You're too tiny to offer me anything that I can't get cheaper elsewhere, and if I want to overpay for something, I might as well overpay for everything on my shopping list in one place. I had a question about where a product was. A worker who was stocking goods sensed my curiosity, asked if I had any questions and then pointed me in the right direction. He did so with a smile and a very positive attitude! The jumbo blueberries from here are spectacular! Some of the freshest that I have found in supermarkets! For a neighborhood market, paying the higher price isn't too bad. Just keep in mind that everything is significantly marked up. $18 total for orange juice and blueberries. read more

First time visiting this cute little market next to Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous. They had the cutest produce including purple bell peppers, honeynut squash, swan neck gourd, watermelon radishes, starkrimson pears, and the cutest little onions. I bought a starkrimson pear for the first time and was curious about how it would taste compared to the more common pear types. The cashier (who I felt was the owner also) was very informative/detailed in terms of describing how the starkrimson pear would taste and how it could be used in cooking. He definitely knew his produce. I would definitely go there again to grab ingredients for a yummy meal. read more

Stopped by Mainstay Market in San Francisco for lunch and got Musashi's sushi boxes!! I've already tried their sushi at their Berkeley location so I was really happy to see that they were selling at Mainstay Market. It's super convenient to just pick up when you're on your lunch break or don't feel like cooking at home. Of course, I was blown away by the quality of their sushi. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the rice was perfectly cooked. Fish to rice ratio was always on point. Would definitely come back to get these yummy boxes on the go! read more

Seriously bad experience at the store. While attempting to buy a $3.50 avocado, I was accused of shoplifting by someone in the upstairs area of the store. Seemed odd to accuse me of shoplifting (I wasn't) given the fact that was seconds away from buying the $3.50 avocado. A verbal confrontation ensued with the person who remained upstairs - I walked out w/o purchasing the item, and they have lost a customer over a $3.50 avocado. I want to come here more often, but the prices have become absolutely outrageous. This place always was a little pricey, in return for a convenient location and great produce. It's no longer convenient to stop in for a couple things, because the Gus' or Good Life (which are not bargain grocery stores!) just up the street are *so* much cheaper. The last couple times we've stopped in, we were looking at our receipt after and face-palming for spending over $100 on a single bag of groceries. For one example, extra virgin olive oil was "on sale" for $20. The same exact product/brand at the Gus' up the street is $15 at full retail price. When marking down your products still puts you almost 30% over the same item at full-cost at a nearby store, it's a problem - at least for me. I don't remember this store ever marking stuff "on sale" before at all, and this is like a hilarious farce. The people here are very nice. I hope they get great pay and benefits because the cost of groceries here has become absolutely ridiculous. read more

Definitely check out this new section in their store for some refreshing drinks and to find something nice to pair with lunch and dinner :) Absolutely love Mainstay and every organic and healthy product that this market offers. They have so many products that are super healthy and absolutely delightful, particularly their desserts. Lots of plant-based choices! Besides their produce and fruits which are phenomenal quality, they have a lovely variety of snacks, drinks and sweets -- everything you could possibly need to whip up a delicious and wholesome meal. They also have a great selection for lunch if you want to drop in during your lunch break for a quick grab and go! Yummy Sushi, salad, fresh homemade sandwiches, freshly squeezed juices, etc. And don't forget to stop in for the soup! Every day of the week they'll offer a different type of soup - my favorite are the clam chowder, broccoli cheddar and cream of mushroom soup. As a Dogpatch resident myself I've always appreciated their kind and helpful service. The owners and staff are quite knowledgeable about their products in terms of nutrition and ingredients, so if you have a dietary preference they'll point you in the right direction. This little store is just gorgeous and the staff is always super nice and friendly. It's the best little grocery store I've seen. They're a tad pricey but so is Lucky's. People don't ever consider prices from the business point of view. Their prices reflect the cost of operating in that location and the quality of the food, which is outstanding. The whole store is also very well kept, clean and they value their good customers (hence the pictures on the door- I really don't want to be around people who are stealing openly, eating food brazenly with no intention to pay, and/or trashing the store). Convenient little store with a great variety of fresh and organic produce, especially if you live in the Dogpatch neighborhood! They were limited in their meat selections (only had some frozen options) and didn't have alcoholic beverages, but I understand that they're still in the process of stocking up on inventory. I would HIGHLY recommend their house-made salsa - we got the mild version and it was delicious and blended into a somewhat creamy/rich consistency! There's no sign on the door saying they don't take EBT, which causes really embarrassing problems for those that depend on food assistance. They also have weird mugshots on the door of people no longer allowed in. In my experience in grocery stores we have those behind the register because having them out front looks unprofessional / sketchy. Everything here is also super marked up but I guess that's convenience. They do have a lot of expensive vegan speciality items which is nice if you're looking for that. It was pretty gross that the lady dropped my muffin twice on the bare counter when I was trying to check out as well. read more

A most welcome & needed addition to the dogpatch neighborhood. A well packed store: beautiful produce with seasonal items & gems. High quality pantry items, good frozen foods (the turkey meatloaf is so good!) An amazing selection of meats, dairy, vegetarian and vegan options. They support local vendors and bring is amazing bread, coffee, chocolate, pastries etc. I love coming here because the staff is very friendly and helpful. Great selection of local organic produce and best selection of Asian cooking stuff of any small markets within walking distance--they've got stuff like miso, lemongrass, mirin, water chestnuts... even dragonfruit! Really quaint local grocery store in a neighborhood lacking a grocery store. Service is extremely friendly, and they have a surprisingly wide stock of everything for a small grocery store. Fruits and vegetables are fresh most of the time, and they also stock a lot of local vendors, which is fantastic (coffee, chocolate, donuts, bread, etc). The only expected downside is that prices are really outrageous on certain items, so just be conscious about prices when you're grabbing things. read more

Original review: This is a much needed addition to an area where Whole Foods in Potrero Hill and Gus's are the closest and therefore the only options for groceries. So for that, I am glad. It's a small market so you'll definitely find more choices elsewhere, but it's a great place to pick things up in a pinch. The COVID policy is you have to buy what you touch so that might be a bit inconvenient if you're trying to pick out fruits and veggies. My big gripe is that when I went to check out, my Strauss chocolate milk was rung up (entered manually) as $7.19 when it was clearly labeled $5.19 on the shelf. When I mentioned this, the guy replied "No, it's $7.19." I replied "It says $5.19 right over there" and pointed at the price listed in the refrigerated section, which showed I was right. He replied "Uh, well I'll honor that price over there but I need to go check with my dad." The price was listed at $5.19 before my visit that day and has remained listed at $5.19 after that day, so I have no idea what's going on there. Whole Foods sells the same product for $4.99 so $7.19 is a ridiculous markup if that is indeed correct. Make sure you're paying the prices that are labeled on the shelving, rather than the number they're tapping in once you get to the register. A beautifully organized neighborhood market with all of the basics and specialty items you need! Even if you've never been to Mainstay Market, you can easily navigate the aisles and find what you are looking for. Mainstay Market is clearly committed to healthy eating and supporting local businesses - I noticed that they sell items from small creameries, and bakers in the area. Every time I've been, every item I want is completely stocked, and they are constantly bringing in new products. They have my favorite flavor of Kevita kombucha (ginger cayenne), fresh daily Acme bread, convenient and organic to go salads, and DO. NOT. LEAVE. WITHOUT. their in-house made spicy salsa and guacamole! I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the staff is incredibly welcoming and happy to help you with whatever you're looking for! read more

This is a very nice market. The layout is just the right size to get in and grab what you need. The staff is friendly and overly helpful. It's a perfect neighborhood stop to grab veggies in between Costco runs. Unfortunately, those vegetables are usually a little long in the tooth. Greens are typically soft, peppers just starting to wrinkle, etc. I want to respect the don't touch the food rule, but when I pick something up and it's wilting? Again, I love the place and support it, this is just a cry for freshness and produce that will last more than a day. I will be happy to update this if things change. read more

Giving this market 5 stars because of service. I had to go to the bathroom this morning and of course, Dogpatch has zero public toilets. I popped in asking if they had a bathroom, fully expecting to be told no as is the case in most stores in SF. I sheepishly told them I would be happy to purchase something. The manager and the employee working there laughed, handed me the bathroom key, and said with a twinkle in their eye "be sure to put $1 in the slot in the door before going in." Afterward I purchased a protein bar and they threw in a La Croix for free. In this crazy and often inhumane world we live in, it's great to know there are still some people who are kind to strangers and have a sense of humor. If I lived in Dogpatch I would shop here for sure. read more

Finally we have a decent grocery store in Dogpatch! There are some bad reviews here on Yelp but Mainstay gets a perfect 5.0 on Google out of 15 reviews, which I believe are more aligned with my experience so far. The people at Mainstay are very friendly. I feel the warmth of a local grocery store from the fact that they remember me even though I've been to Mainstay only 3-4 times and wore a mask every time. I heard from a server at Magnolia Brewing, which is right next door, that the owner of Mainstay worked at Gus's for a long time. So it makes sense that Mainstay has a fantastic assortment of fresh produce (both organic and conventional) and healthy packaged foods including many, many plant-based options. I love that they carry many local brands -- I found new favorites like Nana Joes at Mainstay. read more
