Update: The owner of the shop messaged me saying I could come back in for a free cut to get my hair fixed up. Moved up to the Midwest about a week after the cut so I can't go back, but I gave +1 star for the very professional response. As the 2-star rating so aptly describes: meh. The Good: The atmosphere is cool. Its hipster, in a tattoo and motorcycle kind of way. The Bad: My haircut. It the first haircut I've had in years where I was actually dissatisfied with it. I get my hair cut at lots of different places, so that's probably 10 stylists where I've found my hair to be somewhere between acceptable and very good. I would call what I have now 'not bad' (in that "it's definitely not good" kind of way). The whole think felt like a rush job; it took maybe 20 minutes, I wasn't even walked the 20 feet to the counter afterwards. Consequently, the whole looks looks amateurish at best and like a child cut it at worst. The right side around my ear was horrible. Had to trim a missed spot, sideburns were noticeably uneven... even despite all of that I feel like my bangs were cut in such a way that they only sit right with wax in them, which is not something I do. I would describe myself generally unenthused about all this. The Ugly: All this for $35 BEFORE the tip. Didn't even get a hair wash. I would value my haircut at about $17, have to assume the rest of the cost goes into the cool decor. Overall: Would not recommend. read more

Whatev. Bones cut my beard just fine. He was really nice and took his time, even though he showed up late for work. The rest? Can't seem to be bothered with details like being friendly, or knowing what service I came in for. The dude that rang me up even tried to charge me for a haircut, after making me wait to pay while he talked to someone else about their girlfriend. I guess my beard being shorter wasn't a sign to charge me for a beard cut. (For the record - it's obvious at first sight that my head is almost bald. No haircuts are needed.) This place is really, really good for a haircut. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, you probably won't do as good of a job maintaining your hairstyle so it won't look quite as nice in the weeks after you get the haircut. No, those shouldn't discourage you from allowing these fine people to literally chop off one of the only body parts that it is really acceptable to do so. The haircut I got here was incredible quality, the people were nice and very friendly, and the atmosphere was cool. If you're getting a crew cut, you probably don't need to come here, but if you actually want a hairstyle, then you need to be here. The only issue I had is that in my office, my hairstyle is kind of radical - I work in a very traditional office. When I walked in here, I felt very conservative. The people here have super cool haircuts so if your ego can't handle being the least interesting person in the room, then maybe you should get your mom to cut your hair. read more

This place JUST opened and I foresee wonderful things. Brandy (who is one of owners) and her business partner are stylist/barbers from Roots in Montrose. They did a great job with the place - vintage barber chairs, minimal but clean decoration and on a very accessible part of Washington Avenue Brandy cut Matt's hair and trimmed his beard - I think he and I would both agree this was the best cut he's had in 2 years. $35 for the cut and $10 for the beard trim. Cutthroat is definitely an excellent Barber's shop. I've been here twice and would recommend anyone to visit at least once. I've tried a partial shave and haircut and have walked out both times happier than when I walked in. It is also the most expensive place I have had a haircut. I typically go to Chinatown for my haircuts and they are a third of the cost - including hair washing. I would recommend Cutthroat for a haircut once or twice a year. I had the unfortunate experience of a straight razor shave at this joint. It was probably a bad omen when I realized that the guy doing my shave looks like he has so little facial hair that he doesn't need to shave himself at all (whereas I have extremely heavy facial hair). I have had several straight razor shaves in my life, and no other has been nearly this painful. The main and most obvious problem is that the razor was dull. I didn't see a strop in this place. Do they sharpen their razors or what? There were various other problems involving the shaving techniques used by my barber. For example, I was unaware that one is supposed to wipe the shaving cream off before running the blade across the skin! Each whisker cut felt like it was being pulled out with tweezers. My face was irritated for a week after this shave. And by the way, I showed up early, and my shave started about 25 minutes after the appointed time. I gave 2 stars instead of one because It appeared that others were being given good service, and the atmosphere is cool. Also, my barber was nice enough but simply incompetent to perform a straight razor shave. read more

I've gotten my haircut by my friend Cisco for the past 3 years almost. He's a licensed barber but worked out of his apt while looking for a shop to call his own. Unfortunately for me, he was hired by a modern, manly shop in Austin. Apparently, the owner of his shop used to work at Cutthroat. Naturally, he recommended i check this place out. This isn't your typical $15 hair cut so don't come looking for that. $35 for a cut, but well worth it. Each visit is accompanied by a complimentary 8th Wonder beer. I had a great experience there. Unfortunately, the barber who cut my hair is moving to their new location in the East End. I don't think I'll be following home because my job is right down the street from the original Cutthroat. And for the guys complaining about straight razor shaves - the blades are more likely to cut through your skin, do you really want these guys to try to sanitize something that may have cut another man? Maybe you can buy your own razor and see if your barber will provide the service with it. Just an idea. read more

I heard about this place from a high school friend and i decided to give them a shot. It was a bit of a drive for me since i live up near the Spring/Woodlands area, but on a good day I can get there in 30 minutes or less. I was recommended by my friend to call in and make an appointment, but they do take walk-ins. You should call in for an appointment if you plan on coming in, the wait can span from a couple of minutes to hours depending on the time and day. Walked in and I immediately fell in love with the place and atmosphere. The building has a rustic/hipster/loft kind of vibe to it. They always have music playing, ranging from old school hip-hop, to hipster/indie bands, to old and timeless classics. The staff there was very friendly, they greeted me when i came in and are very open to conversation. They also offered beer to those waiting for their barber! I sat down in Juan's chair. A very friendly and chill guy. We first talked about my hair because i was not sure if he was familiar with cutting Asian hair, which is known to be very thick and coarse. He gave me a really good consultation and we decided on a comb over with a hard line and a hi-top skin fade. I was very impressed on how he handled my hair. He also showed me how to get it done in the morning. I did knock a star off due to the fact they charged $35 for a cut, which for me is a bit on the pricey side. I also picked up a can of pomade for $17, so in total i paid $52. Overall I was very impressed by this barber shop. I would most definitely recommend this barbershop to anyone looking for a premium hair cut. Went in on my day off to grab a quick cut. I recently moved from the east coast where I had my go to barber every time i needed a cut. I checked out the yelp reviews here and was referred by a friend to go and check this place out. certainly was not disappointed, didn't have an appointment but they squeezed me in with ryan before his next appointment. he asked what kind of cut I wanted and even talked me through how he was going to cut it. he spent a generous amount of time trimming and cutting even though he had his next appointment waiting. he continued to keep up conversation and make me feel at home, even offered me a beer out of their own beer tapped fridge. after the cut he used pomade to style my hair and gave me some good recommendations on types of pomade to buy. after finishing my cut he gave me his business card and told me to come back for my next cut. the price was a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for. i look forward to going back to get my next haircut at cutthroat. read more

I've been wanting to check out Cutthroat for some time. I made an appointment for a Friday afternoon a couple days in advance, then I received a voice message saying that my barber will be doing a pop-up at The Classroom in Montrose. Which was no big deal to me, I mess with TCR and it's a 10-15 minute drive from downtown, and a little closer to home. When I got there, there was one barber who I assumed I was scheduled for. After some back and forth, I find out that the barber scheduled to cut my hair was out of town and I wouldn't be able to get cut until another 1.5 hrs. I called back Cutthroat, spoke to Brandy, and told them about the situation. She scheduled me for the following morning and comped me entirely. The cut itself was great, Brandy knew exactly what to do with minimal instruction. I felt terrible that I didn't have cash to tip her, told me to just get her next time. The shop had a great feel to it, classic feel with a modern touch. Music selection was great, ASAP Rocky was on when I was on the chair. Overall, a great experience and will be returning. read more

The good folks at Reserve Supply, the skate shop / boutique right next door, had told me about the opening of a new barbershop a few months ago. I've been pretty stoked about trying this place out for a while. Now that I've been here three times, it's finally time for a review. One thing that sets this place apart from other OG barbers like Big Kats = reservations. This place is perfect if you have a 9 to 5 job and can't afford to wait for a long time on weekends. Haircut. The folks here are super skilled. I think I've gotten one of the best haircuts ever. The guys here can give you all the "trendy" cuts like undercut, pomps, and fades. I'm Asian. It's really hard to find a spot that can cut Asian hair. I've always been going to Asian hair salons. I was pretty wary about going to an "all-American" barber. This place kinda blew me away. Brandy does my hair. She's really good. One word of caution, I guess. I wouldn't recommend this place if you have aversion to "hipsters." Price: Much more expensive than your usual barber. A normal cut will set you back $35. Takes credit cards via Square. Space: Really cool atmosphere. Industrial meets oldies? Hard-to-find specialty hair products. They stock merchandise from Uppercut and Baxter of California. Parking: Don't park on Washington. There are two free lots in the back. One behind the building. One across from the main lot. They advertise "Child's Cuts" on their website and on their price list that is hanging in the shop, however the last time I took my 8-year old son in for his cut they played hard-core rap music the entire time with copious amounts of profanity and inappropriate language. I kept thinking they would realize there was a kid around and someone would change the music, but no one seemed to notice or care. When his cut was over I quickly paid for the service and left. I really enjoyed my first experience at Cutthroat on 19th. I will definitely get my hair cut here as long as I am in Houston. There are two locations convenient to me in the Heights/Montrose area. One on Washington near Studemont and one on 19th near Boomtown Coffee in the Heights. I booked my appointment online with no trouble. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted and seated in my chair. The guy cutting my hair did a really good job. I always appreciate them taking extra time, because after all, I'm the one who has to live with the results! Place is pretty good. I forgot the name of my barber but he did an excellent job. I showed him what I wanted and he did exactly that. A lot of barbers called out due to flooding so they were short staffed but still cut my hair. I wasn't offered a drink, like they advertise, and I was half expecting a straight razor neck shave but wasn't given that either. I usually go to the Argyle League where the hair cuts are $40 as opposed to Cutthroat's $35, but they give you the neck shave, complimentary drink, and a complimentary trim before your next cut... all on top of great service. I would go back to Cutthroat's again but would choose Argyle League over them for my go-to place. Overall not bad but doesn't give you everything that their competitors do for a few bucks more. read more
