I have now been in for a basic cut a few times. I've had a hard time picking barbers across a few cities, but I have lucked out after moving to Houston. I got Amber as a walk in and I will continue to book him going forward. He also does a great job with my 5yo son. The barbershop itself is a great little shop adorned in interesting trinkets collected over what looks like decades. It's one of those places where you'll see something new every visit. Walked in- just moved to Houston- there were three barbers working- I had about a ten minute wait and ended up in Ambers chair. Cut my hair exactly like I wanted. When done explained how to make an appointment and what was offered besides a hair cut. Great price. Definitely will return and book with Amber! read more

Man I really hate to have to leave this because I loved coming here when I was living in the heights. I booked an appointment online for a haircut and beard trim. Drove into town from the west side, when I arrived the barber I booked with wasn't there. I waited and about 20 min after my appointment one of the other barbers said they called and texted the barber I booked with but couldn't get ahold of her and asked if I want them to cut my hair. I said sure, big mistake! I ended up with a rushed super choppy uneven hair cut and no beard trim. Sad to say I'd have been better off got to one of the cheap chain barber shops. Walked in at 11:40. Two barbers giving haircuts. One finished, decided to leave. The other one, Richard, was doing the same steps over and over on his customer, and sneaking glances at me to see how long I would wait. I left at 12:05. He was still with the same customer. Maybe I should have waited, to see how long it would take that fool to finish that haircut, he was almost done when I walked in. The hell with them and their$27.00 haircut. This is the only place we take our son for a haircut. It's got a major retro feel, and the barbers are really nice and accommodating for men and boys, alike. They're special-needs friendly -- a major plus. The price is great, and it's nice that this isn't far from my place. I've stopped looking for anywhere else to go for a haircut. They do shaves, as well. The only downside, is that you might have to wait a while, but I've never had more than 3 people ahead of us, which is about 20 min. wait. Wanted a barber shop, not a salon, so tried Doug's for the first time based on the good reviews here. The guy who cut my hair didn't really listen to me and it was too late by the time I saw what he had done. Maybe another barber there would have been better but I got what I got. Luckily my hair grows fast and I can wear caps until then. But if anyone knows of a just a regular no-frills barber shop with good, experienced barbers- not stylists- inside the Loop or the Memorial Villages, please let me know. Thanks. read more

Went here yesterday for a haircut. I've been to several barber shops in the Houston area over the past few years trying to find a good place to get a haircut at a reasonable price. My search appears to be over. First of all, this place looks like a barbershop that you'd see in the movies. In fact, it was the barbershop in Rushmore. Lots of old photos and newspapers on the walls. Great atmosphere, even down to the old picture tube TV showing the Lakers / Knicks game. Second, the barbers know their stuff. Leonard cut my hair and did a great job. In addition to being a good barber, he's also a great guy and the conversation was excellent. In and out for $16.00 plus tip. Very convenient to my house. I've been doing the Great Clips/Sport Clips/Super Cuts for a long time. I can't remember the last time I went to an actual barbershop. With my recent move into the city I figured that was something that needed to change as well. I did a quick search on Google Maps for something in my area and randomly picked Doug's and Don's. This place is old school! Rabbit ears on the TV, a dog sitting on the floor, a jar of lollipops for kids and 3 guys cutting hair. There is lots of memorabilia on the wall. But its not the fake memorabilia they sell at Hobby Lobby, this is stuff that was on the wall before it was memorabilia! Clippings from old Houston Press awards for best barber shop, pictures of former barbers, some needlework that looks like it was given as a gift, on and on...next time I hope I have to wait a few minutes so I can check out more of what is on the wall. The hair cut was $10 and the guy knows what he is doing. He didn't just get his license and trying to move up the ladder. He is a barber. I'll definitely be back. read more

Thank god I finally found a barbershop. I was getting tired of store cops following me around because of my long hair. Great place. The weird guy hanging out front did make me a little nervous but I went in. Like stepping into a time machine. Original 1958 magazines. Furniture and photos that seem to have been there since the placed opened. They even had NPR on the radio (Prairie Home Companion rerun). Everything a guy wants in a haircut. Some small inconsequential banter. Quick cut (Even though my hair was as long as a filthy hippies - no offense intended to my filth hippie friends). All at a reasonable price. In the end I was happy, The wife said I looked good (after the last hair cut I got in Galveston she stared at my neck in horror because of two gashes the barber had given me - thus the long delay in my next haircut.) Most importantly the hair cut left me feeling good and not bleeding from the neck. I recommend! read more

I am new to the heights and I'm so happy I found this place. I hadn't been to a real barber shop since I was a kid. This place really takes you back in time with the antiques, mid century aesthetics, hospitality, and the barbers seem to truly admire the profession. My barber Dick was very helpful and friendly. He cuts hair with precision, and pays close attention to detail. Another perk to their service is they edge with a straight razor and provide a neck and shoulder massage, all for $21 (cash only.) Parking is a bit tough to find but the laundry mat across the street seems to be fine with letting you park there. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good cut and great service. I read the glowing reviews and drove to Doug's and Don's from The Woodlands (40 minutes each way) to finally get a decent haircut. What I got was so-so. I don't know what all the excitement is about because my cut wasn't all that good. The barber shop has a nice retro feel and probably beats anything in The Woodlands but... I've had my hair cut here three times now. The shop has an old-timey vibe to it, the barbers are friendly, and I've never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes. The location is also very convenient if you live in the Heights. My first two cuts were pretty good. I believe Doug cut my hair the first time and Quintin?(the black guy) the second time. Considering the price was only $12, I had no complaints. Unfortunately, the third time was NOT a charm. On my third visit Quintin? cut my hair again. I asked for basically a buzz cut with the hair a little longer on the top, nothing fancy. Half-way through, the barber got up to get a drink and proceeded to finish the drink while I waited in the chair. He also managed to dump the hair in my lap when he pulled the apron off. No big deal, I brushed it off and paid. When I got home, I realized he had missed several long hairs, particularly around my ears. Still, I only paid $12 (+ tip) so no big deal. However, he also trimmed the sides of my head at different lengths. It's not that he forgot to trim one side; he definitely used the clippers on both sides, but apparently he used a shorter guard when trimming the left side. I didn't notice it before I left the shop, but now that I've looked at it more closely the hair on the right side of my head is almost twice as long as the hair on the left. I don't know what was going on or why I got such a crappy cut, but my hair looks ridiculous and now I need to go get another haircut to fix this one. I will definitely not be returning. read more
