I have been getting my hair cut here since 2014 (I have lived in PA, NJ, LA: and the reason I keep returning is because they are the best in Houston ( better than NJ, PA, La). There are glowing reviews, mostly from years ago and mostly from a dedicated customer base. These fans keep the shop going and, obviously, like the barbers as much or more than the haircuts they give. They are helping Raymond fend off the developers. I had been a customer for ten years, but not now. Richard, and to some extent his son, are the main players here. They toil day in and day out in a physically unattractive, dirty space. Someone wrote the shop is in a remodeled old house, but not so much. The bathroom is circa Galveston flood, but that's not a reason to stay away. Haircuts are inconsistent if you require anything that vaires from the clipper guard system, anything that requires real concentration on the part of the barber. The skill level of the barbers is mid at best and their concentration can be high or fleeting. When it's fleeting, you'll get chop job. I don't expect barbers to be skilled conversationalists, but when they've seen the same customer once a month for 10 years, they cannot be excused for asking the same dumb ass questions time after time. Paying extra for a quality haircut should consistently snag the customer one each and every time. read more

Years after my first review. I'm still coming here and still getting a great haircut at a reasonable price. Years later, there are still the same barbers and they all do an excellent job. Raymond is the mainstay. His sons Richard and Carl also cut there. And, grandson J.R. has been there for years. I allow any one of them to cut my hair, they are all equally professional. read more

Been going to Richard for years , loved all my haircuts , and have grown to love the family that runs it . Unfortunately my family had to love to DC for a great job, but every holiday when I visit , I never fail to get a haircut with Richard . But what makes this barber different , is his heart of gold. My father recently had a massive fall and broke his femur, he was hospitalized for 3 weeks for rehab , he was feeling pretty blue and depressed. Richard took his Sunday morning and headed down to to the hospital and gave my father a great haircut and shave, he left my father feeling like a million dollars and cheered him up, can't put a price on that, comes from the heart. read more

I have been growing my beard out for about a month and decided that it was time to get my neck and beard cleaned up/trimmed. I simply googled, "Barbers nearby" and got a list of like 20. I started at the top and worked my way down. The first four barbers I called all said that during Covid, they were not offering beard trims, only haircuts. I ended up calling this place that was #5 down the list and the guy who answered the phone told me that, "We do neck trims, beard trims, haircuts, etc., come in 30 minutes, we should have an opening." Thirty minutes later, I arrive at 11:30 a.m. and park my truck. The barber has a large sign out front, so it's impossible to miss. You walk up a few steps and enter. It's a home that has a built in studio to cut hair. There were 3 chairs and plenty of room. They had two TVs going with local news playing in the background. There was an older gentleman in his late 60's/early 70's, along with two much younger guys, (who turned out to be the sons). I said, "I called 30 minutes ago, for a beard/neck trim." The older man says, "have a seat young man." We talked through the entire process. He used a trimmer and then a straight razor to clean up around my cheek bones and neck. It took about 30 minutes. (All while wearing a mask and face guard to protect against The Corona Virus). As I get up, he says, "that'll be $10." I said, "$10?! That's it?!" He laughed and said, "that's it." I ended up giving him a $20. As I was leaving, I asked, "So, are you a Raymond?" He replied, "yes sir, I'm Raymond!" I thanked him for his time, let him know that I appreciated his work, along with the price and told him on my way out that he'd be seeing me again soon. Getting my hair cut is my own personal therapy session - but cheaper than real therapy, of course. There is something about sitting quietly in a chair letting the barber work that restores my sanity for the 2 weeks between cuts. Lately, I've been a little disenchanted with my tonsorial dojo - the eponymous Men's Hair Salon (Fondren and 59). They do a fine job but it is hard to communicate specific changes (no matter how small) due to the language barrier. So, they basically are on auto-pilot. Seeking to mix it up by finding a new barber, I've scoured Yelp and even consulted David N since he's been banging the drum for more service provider reviews. I thought I had it settled to try out T&T Salon, then changed my mind to try out The Original Bellaire Barber Shop, then switched it Friday to here since they only have 3 other reviews (highly rated by dapper Morgan C). I'm literally putting my neck on the line for you, dear reader. Raymond's is a small house across Jackson Hill street from the famed Patrenella's Italian restaurant. "Small" is the operative word - it has two barber chairs. About 5 seats are inside for waiting and there are about 5 more on the porch outside. Piles of magazines (sports, cars, and Playboys) are freely available to read while you're waiting - everyone knows Playboys have exceptional "writing". Several LCDs turned to sports are also around to watch. I opted for an ESPN magazine - not that there's anything wrong with nekkid women. Raymond and his son are the staff for this shop and I secured my $10 haircut from Raymond himself. He's a quiet man who was happy to note my first visit and volunteered that he's been in business for 25 years. Lots of cops come early in the day since he opens at 530 AM (yes, that is Crack O' Dawn time). I'm looking forward to coming back at 7 AM to beat the weekend rush. After asking me how I'd like my hair cut, I got to tell him my long-burning change.* Working quickly but carefully, he got it all done in 10 minutes including some lather and straight razor work. All in all, a good true barber visit with an added bonus of pin-ups and super-early hours. You know? It just dawned on me. I have had the same haircut for pretty much the last 20 years. Fade with a number 1 (at its longest, a 3) with about an inch on top. I was worried when I moved to Houston, I have been going to the same 3 barbers for the better part of those 20 years (Chuy in San Diego, Mari or Juan in L.A.), so thankfully a search revealed Raymond's off of Washington and about ten minutes from my place. At ten dollars, you really can't complain, and they seem to know every single one of their patrons, so it makes it even better. I have been there 3 times now and I am recognized when I walk in. Uhm, been there hung over, sober, and teetering on asleep, but they always get the job done. I do have to chuckle at some inadvertent George Lopez humor overheard here...'member? The barber shop is literally inside an old renovated house. What I like most is the family togetherness, aside that this is a place to get a great haircut. Raymond is the patriarch, and father of two other barbers, and the 4th barber is his grandson. Nothing fancy here, but good and cheap haircuts. It is a traditional barbershop. read more

I was happy that i found a barber closed to my work , I stop by and ask if they have time cut my hair , they said yes and please take a seat such I did ; after waiting for almost 45 min I stared locking around . It's an old school barber shop that's located in what used to be the hood! It's welcoming, charming, clean, and relaxing. I have been coming here for about 4 years and it is the only place that I will ever get a haircut in Houston. This place has the best men's cut in town. Price is $10 and Raymond and his sons run a great small barber shop. They are open early and stay open till about 6:00 pm I believe. Closed on Mondays like regular salons/barber shops. I say yes and you should too I can say that sometimes you will have to wait a while if they are busy because they take their time with each client while you are in the chair so everyone gets the same attention. read more

You see, as an asian with straight and hard hair, I tend to only go to asian stylist/barber because they know how to shape/cut this tough and unshapeable hair! Unfortunately, there is not many asian stylist around the Memorial Park/Rice Military neighborhood. After reading Morgan C and Edgar V reviews, I decided to check out Raymond... Came here on Thursday around 4.45pm. Nobody and Raymond welcome me into his little salon with only 2 chairs. His son is off sick, so he's working alone and i'm lucky its not busy. So he got all the time to do my hair... We had a little chat, originally from Rosenberg, TX, Raymond was a cotton farmer, moved to Houston, bought this property and been in this business for 25 years. So, very convincing... I asked Raymond to do a French Crop. He took his time and after about 25mins, I had a fresh (maybe younger) look ;-). He really did a great job trimming the back and along the sides. My conclusion though, Raymond is a great trimmer but not a stylist. If you already have a style and need a really good and clean trimming, then Raymond is the man! As for me, I will have to make my way back to Star Hair the next time... cuz the asian barber knows better to shape my hair! read more

Raymond's Barber Shop is an old school community joint that features a father and son team giving patrons a trim in the front room of an old house. My pseudo-fro needs to be groomed by someone with clipper skillz. Carl's got 'em as does his dad, Raymond. Both take their time delivering the cuts and respond well to direction. Cuts are only $9 and are worth the up to an hour wait. You can occupy yourself with the Chron, a nudie mag, Judge Judy (or another Wapner-inspired legal show) or rap with the patrons about politics, sports or the humidity. They're experts on all of those. The regulars are men of all ages, but many are the grey-headed types that you'd expect to find camped out in the Naugahyde chairs. Businessmen and politicians rub elbows with neighborhood kids as they await their turn in the chair. The service, atmosphere and diverse customer base make Raymond's a great place to take a mini-vacation from your reality and peek into the lives of others. read more

I have been all over Houston and I finally found this place and it is very close to where I live. It can get busy, especially after 4PM and all day Saturday, but they open very early if you are so inclined. Street parking is not a problem. So I have been here a few times to get my hair cut. It's like someone set up a barber shop in their living room. It is seriously the front room of a house. There are a ton of cats out front, and pictures of cats inside. I don't think the cats come in the house (shop) because I am allergic and it does not bother me while I am in the house (shop) waiting. The reading material while waiting is excellent (Playboy). The haircut is pretty good. There is always the occasional stray hair that got missed when I get home, but this seems to be the case no matter where I go. You do get your neck cleaned up with a razor at the end which is nice. The biggest plus about this place is how early it opens. I work all night sometimes, and I want to get my haircut before I go home and go to bed. So I get off work at 6:30am and head there, and there is already a line. That early in the morning it's all old guys whose haircuts only take 10 minutes anyways. Come to think of it, my haircut takes that long too. I hate eating up my off days with this type of errand, so Raymond's is super convenient with its early morning hours. Great little neighborhood barber shop. Mens barber shop that is, as evidence by the reading selection. The price is right but there is usually a wait, which is tempered by the abundancy of reading material and relaxed waiting area where you can openly talk with the other patrons about balloon boy or watch some Dr. Phil. They are open early...like before daylight. I regularly see cops coming in for their weekly trim. That's probably the best time to go. Finally, I found a good barber! I moved to Houston last year and have had terrible luck with barbers. I stumbled upon Raymond's after reading some good reviews here on Yelp and finally feel like I've found my place. At places like this, I usually try to wait for the namesake (in this case Raymond), but there was a long wait, so I went with RJ (Raymond Jr. maybe??), who had an open seat right when I walked in. My barber ended up doing a great job... he listened to my requests and cut my hair perfectly. They even do the old school neck shave here. I've held off reviewing this place for a while as I didn't want it to get more crowded. I think they do a great job. Have had Raymond or his son cut my hair for a few years now. Nice low key place for men. My flattop always looks good, and they still razor my neck and sideburns as needed. Many places don't/won't do that anymore. Also, Raymond doesn't try to upsell you on specialty hair products or other frivolous stuff. They know you have important things like drinking, football and BBQ to attend to, so they cut your hair and your on the way. Get there early to avoid the rush, cuts are $13 now. I've always been searching for a barbershop that just gets it right. Being from Katy, I've always tended to go to the 3.99 or 4.99 shops where they're good for a haircut for a highschool or middle school kid where you don't really care too much yet about how you look. So I always got my hair cut close and I almost always started to look a little bald after my haircut and I did not like it after I started work and living downtown. But at Raymonds, Richard got it just right. taper off in the back and just clean it up a little bit, but don't mow my head. After the cut, couldn't be happier. He knew exactly what I was asking for. And they're great conversationalists, too. Not the type where you wish they would just cut your hair and be quiet. Overall, would definitely go again! read more

This is an old school barber shop owned by multiple generations, tucked away in an old house off Washington. I've gotten haircuts from the granddad, dad, and son. They all were really relaxed and nice, and I enjoyed talking with them while I got my hair cut. It's like I remembered when I was a young kid: going to my dad's barber, shooting the breeze, and getting a straight razor trim on the back of my neck. My wife said its one of the best haircuts I've ever gotten. It was $16, which was pretty good considering the quality. The place is a very masculine old timey style shop... Most of the places around Houston with that feel now charge you an arm and a leg and are actually boutique salons for men. This place is the real deal. Think sports poster and cheerleaders along the faded walls, with a couple of old TV's running in the background. I've now been coming here for a couple of years, and I love it. RJ has been my favorite barber, but most of them do a pretty good job. The only downside is it's a walk-in shop, and it's first come, first served. There have been a handful of times I've had to wait for 30-60 minutes. But it's not often. Common over and make some friends. I love this shop. read more

The hair cuts are great, but it is the way they treat everyone who comes into the shop is the real treat. Every type of man rolls in that door and all are welcomed like well loved family. My barber moved to Austin a some time back and I felt like a bear cub lost in the woods without his Mama bear. I found Raymond's on yelp and they had nothing but good reviews. I've been there 5 times now and love my hair cut each time. I usually get my haircut by one of Raymond's sons - Richard I think. But Raymond himself has cut my hair as well. Anyone here can cut how you like. They only charge $13, so tip generously. I went in for a haircut at my usual time frame, about every 2 1/2 weeks. But I decided to let the top grow so I asked Raymond to just cut the sides. Took him about 10 minutes to give me a 1 mid fade and didn't charge because he said he was just giving my hair a touch up. read more

Just went here to get my beard trimmed, it's the first time I've had it trimmed in seven months. A younger guy helped me. It was fast, he did a fantastic job. I didn't know what to ask for because I'm not accustom to getting a trim. At the end I'm left with a beard that feels better, looks better, and I don't feel like I was over charged for. Lately, they have been closing early as in at least an hour early or more. I dont know what gives. The last few times I came here after work they were completely closed on a day they were scheduled to be open. The next time I came they only had one barber. The last time I came they were open but the door was locked and they were not taking any more people. I have been told the last two times I went there "Try again tomorrow". No thanks. My favorite place to get a haircut in houston. Great location that is holding out against all the condos in a cool little house. Great men's cuts and they finish by trimming your neck with a razor.
