Mike took care of me when I dropped in a couple weeks ago. The haircut was a standard military professional cut and was all done in about 20 minutes. I got good compliments on my haircut and the wife liked it to, so winning! Place is kid friendly to hangout in the center sitting are or next door at coral sword before or after your appointment. I read all the great reviews as well as the not-so-great ones, and I am always impressed with leaders who take accountability for the customer experience. Ryan's comments made me feel secure in trying out the shop. Making the appointment was seamless. They use a common scheduling app called SQUIRE, and I was able to get an appointment with Ryan. The shop is aesthetically fantastic. Very old-school in design and decor, which I like. It fits perfectly in the neighborhood, which adds to the charm. The energy in the room, however, is something that I rarely see. The team and the customers are on an entirely different level of coolness than I'm used to, and the experience was terrific. Great traditional-type barber shop for a guy to get a cut or a shave. I called in the afternoon to ask if they accepted walk-ins, which they said they did, so said I would drop by later. When I entered at 4 pm and told them I was a walk-in, they immediately paired me with a barber. For many services, ready availability like that can be a bad sign, but this particular hairsmith, Jonah, had been working at East End Barber for 5 years, and I was not disappointed. After showing him an example picture on my phone of how I'd like the cut to look and discussing additional details regarding lengths, tapering, and style in the back, Jonah went to work. He was professional and made easy conversation about a variety of topics with me. I did ask for a slight adjustment in the back after seeing the pre-final result, which Jonah duly made. Upon checkout, I also picked up some pomade after consulting with the attendant as to the various styles. I ultimately came away very satisfied with my experience, realizing why East End Barber ranks so highly in many best barbers lists. You'll pay a bit more than a SuperCuts ($40 for a regular cut), but you get quality for that expense. If you're a guy looking for a good cut (while they may be able to do women's cuts, that does not seem to be whom they cater to), East End Barber is a solid option. read more

It's a nice clean barbershop that is ran very well. My issue was with the service itself from Mike. The fade was lacking in the back but overall to be fair I'd say it was decent enough. The BIGGEST issue was thr line up. I have NEVER, in my 38 years of life, had such an obviously crooked line up...I knew the line up was a little high and I'm not the type to overly complain, but I didn't realize HOWbad it was in the chair until I went home. My wife, who is a retired cosmetologist asked me if I paid for this and I embarrassingly did. You'd have to be blind to not see that the line up was extremely crooked and pushed up very high on the right. Again to be fair, it's a nice barbershop and Mike was professional enough - but his actual skill in a clean and even line up was very lacking. I'm not from Houston, I was visiting from another state so I'm not sure if this establishment (or who in the establishment) can cut African American hair. read more

I was looking for a place to get a cut near work, this place came recommended from friends and I went to East End Barber twice and was unimpressed both times. First, the Good: The barber's I had both times were cool, nice guys. The taste in music is great. Good vibe there like everyone knows each other. They offer beer or coffee when you walk in. The Bad: Both times I had an appointment and still had to wait around 20 minutes. Both times I felt rushed and left with my ears, neck, and shirt covered in small pieces of hair. The second time I said no products in my hair and that I never use products in my hair and the barber lathered my head with something called suavecito cream anyway. The Ugly: The back of my head looks bad and the line is uneven. Posted a picture. The verdict: Not my worst haircut but the worst I paid $25 with a 20% tip for. I'm not going back, but my friends still each have "their guy" and keep going back. I guess only go if you're going to book one of the people named in the reviews? I have heard great things about Ryan and Bones from the friends who swear by this place. To their credit they offered me a free edge up AND haircut when I originally complained directly to them, so I made the appointment, but I was very sick day of and called in, the guy on the phone said no big deal. Today I was checking my credit card statement and they charged me $12 for not coming in that day. So I've given this place ~$75 and never got a haircut I like. read more

Visited the shop a couple of days ago as I was in town to visit family. I purposely let my hair grow out a little longer so that I could get a cut at East End Barber. I was lucky to be a walk-in and be the first one in the shop that day since it was a Friday. My haircut from Ryan (owner) was clean and precise. He took his time looking at my hair from every angle. This was probably one of the best haircuts I've had in a while. You can tell a lot about a barber shop with its cleanliness, decor and attention to detail. You can also tell that this barber shop has gone back to the roots of what a barber shop is supposed to be like in that there is no tv. People are forced to interact and socialize with one another. Patrons came in for haircuts, but left with new friendships and great conversations. I sat around for about an hour after my haircut and observed that the barbers truly love what they do, and that the environment they've created at East End Barber fosters a great sense of community. I highly recommend this place whenever you're in Houston. I know that I'll definitely stop in for a cut when I'm in town! read more

Just left. Barber was decent, but took 30 mins to do what my old barber in Dallas does in 10 mins. I was wondering why my ear was burning towards the end and just assumed minor razor burn. Barber didn't say anything to me. Got home and there was blood all over my ear! I am going to a professional event this afternoon and now have a large rash looking area above my ear. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I especially wouldn't recommend anyone to cut their hair with Mike, he didn't listen to a single thing I said besides the fact that I wanted a mid fade. Bro saw how long my hair was and took it upon himself to raise my fade higher than I've literally ever had it before in my life, and cut the sides of my hair in so much that I can't even run my fingers through it anymore. I also told him I wanted a slight trim, but after I caught on to what he was doing halfway through, I really had no choice but to let him keep going or have my hair look completely lopsided. Granted, I did tell him I wanted to cut the sides a tad, but I didn't say to cut them to less than half a centimeter. They're nonexistent now, and for those of you who know how that mushroom cut is supposed to look, I'm not even close anymore. Oh, and after I told the dude he cut my hair way too short, he said "I don't know what to tell you man" and kind of shrugged it off. Didn't seem like he cared to begin with, or like he even wanted to be there, but I could care less. My hair looks horrible and I'm a week away from my birthday. I got a gift certificate to come here as a little Christmas present and I regret even using it. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is because their atmosphere is great, they serve you beer, and they seem to be pretty quick at getting you in the chair once you get there. Otherwise, I would suggest saving your money and going to one of these hood barbershops in the area. Or maybe just getting a barber there who listens to what you're asking for. I wish I was posting a nicer review. I was ready to really like this place but honestly, I was never given a chance. I was heading for a night at The Coral Sword and figured I would get a haircut first. I was driving in from Richmond. Made an appointment for 5:00pm. Hit the road at 3:45 and get hit with multiple stops of traffic. Ugh.. not going to make it. Call the shop and say "hey! First timer.. coming in from Richmond.. excited to try you guys out, but I'm not going to make the 5pm.. any way to push it?" Guy on the phone says "I can move it to 5:15 and you have till 5:30." I said "alright that might work! On my way!" Fight traffic and cut everyone off! Get there in the parking lot at 5:29.. park and run in.. 5:31 Guy at the counter is on the phone.. I wait.. no big deal.. I made it (sort of.) I tell him, "Hey, I called about running late.. couldn't find the place as quick as I wanted too. Made it!" He looks at the time, looks at me.. "yeah man.. Mike can't cut your hair.. sorry, also we have to charge you a no show fee..$20 bucks.." I look at him, "but I'm here.. um ok.. , I'm not paying for nothing.. I just drove 32 miles." His unwillingness to retain a new customer spoke volumes. "We have your card on file.. so we will charge you.." "No you dont. I didn't enter a card" "Yeah we do when you sign up with the app.." "Nope.. check.." *proceeds to check..* "That's weird.. either way.. it's 20 bucks sorry.." "No it's not, and you're not sorry. Thanks" *walk out* Let's talk about what went wrong here. I was late. No excuses. I know I was. But, I think some sort of new customer retention should be given here. I drove 32 miles, I called to warn them I was running late, I made an effort. Got there and instead of working with me like "oh man, Mike started the next cut, want to see if he can get you afterwards?" I would have said yes. I mean.. I caused his schedule to get pushed so.. I'm willing to take a hit there.. but that would have made an accommodation for a new customer. Instead the very uninterested bro at the front made no effort to retain me, and just wanted to charge a fee. Obviously that was more important. I usually go to Argyle League but my barber was booked and I needed a cut for the coming weekend. Either way. I walked out and spent the money I would spent at East End on beer and food at Coral Sword. No harm, just a sad state of customer service. I will never know how "good" this place is.. as the random hipster exclusivity they enforced that day really showed they give 2 shits about new customers. That's fair.
