I had an extremely disappointing experience with this company. I called them to find a water leak, and, they failed to locate the problem and charged me an absurd amount of money for no work. Instead of taking responsibility, they blamed it on "frozen pipes," which was completely false. Even if that had been the case, a reputable company should have offered to come back and address the issue once the pipes thawed. Good installation and knowledge, but am rating Texas Best Plumbing as the worst company for communciations with the customs and NO CLEANUP after the job. They came back a second time and failed to cleanup all of the cutting, tubing, fittings. I waited an hour for them to finish only to discover the 6 workmen had left the house without telling me. I had to clean up after them in the shower stall, bathtub, and outside. I think their knowledge about repiping is superior, but the worst company in communications. I paid a premium price for this only to find I have second thoughts about referring them to anyone else lest I would not put anyone else through the mess. read more

They talk about their "integrity" yet when following up on a shower wall leak a short while following their tub-to-shower drain repairs last year in May, they still charged me $295 just to come and look, totally misdiagnosed the cause of the leak saying it was from a nail or a screw through the sheet rock which made a hole in the Pex pipe and refused to make good on any reimbursement when I had another company repair the leak which turned out to be on the outside wall side of the shower, at one-third of what Custom Plumbing was going to charge me. Just a caution to anyone using their services. Their hourly labor rate apparently is $600. We recently called them out to our house in Georgetown, Tx as they were listed by our builder as the company we should use with our hot water heater still under warranty. They sent two plumbers to the house and decided the gas control value needed to be replaced. There was no charge for the value as the heater was still under warranty. They left and returned to the house within the hour and replaced the valve, (one plumber worked, one just watched). The replacement took about 20 minutes. After they left, the hot water would not turn on, so had to have them come back out because they forgot to turn the water back on and needed to reconnect one of the pipes that they had previously disconnected. Spouse paid the invoice and after realizing the full charge was for labor, I called and talked to one of their reps the following day about the hourly rate, (which he felt was excessive). He spoke to the owner and the rate stands. Final bill was $625. I kind of feel that if we weren't seniors, this would not have happened. Very disappointing experience, so be careful with this company. read more

It's always tough to review a company that overcharged horribly but showed up the day we called and did the job well. Our water heater pilot went out and would not relight. This happened the same day as the first cold snap, so every plumber in town was very busy. I ended up calling Custom because they did the original installation of our water heater about 6 years earlier and are among the few companies servicing AO Smith water heaters. The phone quote was $395 for 2 hours of work, but the parts were included because our water heater was still under warranty. We were supposed to get a phone call before the plumber arrived, but somehow this didn't happen. Matthew, who was super-nice and courteous, showed up at 3:30 pm and was done before 4:30. He said our water heater drained faster than any he'd seen before. We were still charged $395...for less than one hour's labor. We are happy to have hot water again, just a day after the problem occurred, but not thrilled by the hourly rate. Caveat emptor. read more

The water heater in my new-to-me home has been consistently malfunctioning since moving in two weeks ago. CPS was listed as a certified service rep for AO Smith water heaters, which is why I called them. They were able to arrange for a tech to come to my home within the day to look at the existing water heater, quote for repairs and also quote for a new water heater dependent on the price to repair the existing one. Due to the expense to repair the existing heater, I chose to replace it and arranged to have the new one- a different, and hopefully more reliable brand- installed the next day. The quoted price was higher than other tank installation estimates I had received by a few hundred dollars, but it was explained that there was extensive retrofitting that would need to be done, they would have to pull permits due to my home location, etc. Due to the other companies' long waitlists and my desperation for hot water, I scheduled the installation for the following day. The techs showed up and got to work, and seemed competent at their jobs. However, they only informed me after I'd signed the paperwork and given my credit card info that they wouldn't need a permit to complete the job. Additionally, they left sawdust, bits of sheetrock, and water all over my utility room which seems unprofessional (photos attached.) They also forgot a couple of their things and forgot to turn my water back on before leaving. I feel that these issues collectively (especially the non-issue of the permit) adds up to a plumbing job not worth nearly the $1700 I was charged for it. Had they offered to lower the price a bit upon learning that a permit and inspection would not be needed, cleaned up after themselves, and remembered to turn the water valve back on, this would have been a 5-star review. read more

They replaced my kitchen faucet, and installed a new garbage disposal at the same time, saving me money. I had bought both of the new items myself over time, and they installed both, while replacing all of the drain pipe plumbing under the sink, and rerouting the dishwasher drain into the new garbage disposal, which had not been done when the new dishwasher was installed, by someone else, originally. We live in Crestview and have had Custom do numerous projects for us from replacing the water line into our home to, mounting toilets, replacing kitchen faucets, dealing with showers that were not hot and a collapsed wastewater line. CP is always competitive on price, efficient and professional. The most recent work we had done was a kitchen faucet replacement. Charles also got our hot water situation taken care of in our master bath within our minimum time which a lot of plumbers would not do without charging extra. The first project Custom did for us was to replace an old water line that had collapsed. This happened the day before we were supposed to drive to Colorado on vacation, and I had contacted several plumbers who were quoting insane numbers. The custom crew was working on a new house across the street, Terry took a look at it and had the job permitted and done within less than 24hrs. Bought a new Water heater less than year ago - these guys installed it. Water heater stopped working - had them come out to fix it. They charged us almost $400 to change a thermometer, an additional $135 dollars because that didn't actually fix the problem, and this morning the boss comes out, picks up the tools left behind and CUTS A HOLE in my damn wall because the first "FIX" was accompanied by a LEAK. By the way, I should mention that he didn't fix it - just cut the hole, looked and left. He did graciously offered us back out $135 after all this... There's gotta be some kind standard for plumbers? I called these guys because the water in one shower was not staying hot so the maximum amount of time I could be in the shower before it got cold was about 8 minutes (I timed it). These guys send someone out who is probably not a plumber, who brought his kid along, and was talking about the "$80 diagnosis fee" from the second he stepped into the door and mentioned it a few more times before even trying to figure out the problem. He fooled around for 10-15 minutes and then said "nothing's wrong" and asked for $80 again. I call the place and tell them I would absolutely not pay $80 for someone to come out and tell me nothing is wrong when there is clearly something wrong and they need to figure out what the problem is. The manager calls me back and argues a bit and says the guy, who is arguably not even a plumber, said "it stayed hot" which is ridiculous. I push back because I know something's wrong with the shower and the guy decides right then and there on the phone that it's probably my "dip tube" and it will be $280 and wants to come out ASAP to take my money and fix a dip tube that's probably not broken on my 1 year old water heater. This is all extremely fishy to me so I call out a different plumber who does actual diagnostics and states there is definitely something wrong with the water temperature, but it is DEFINITELY NOT the dip tube. The REAL plumber fixes the problem literally within 15 minutes and charges me less than half what these guys wanted. These people are absolute scammers and they will not be getting a penny from me for their "diagnostic visit" telling me nothing is wrong.. and then telling me the wrong thing is wrong! If I have to go to a different shower in a different part of the house every time I actually want a hot shower, something is wrong. That's why I called you in the first place. read more

These guys were ridiculously awesome for our company today! I am the maintenance coordinator for an Austin Property Management company and our usual plumber got in over his head trying to clear a main drain line and broke his auger line off in the main drain. The first plumber basically called me at noon yesterday and said "so sorry" After about 20 plus calls to plumbing contractors that treated me like I was asking them to donate blood to get service anytime soon, I found Custom Plumbing Services. These guys treated me like family and put our job up first thing in the morning. It was nothing for them to extract our other plumbers snake and locate the drain problem. they located the problem of tree roots, brought in equipment right away and dug up the pipes that were engulfed in tree roots and repaired. These guys literally moved mountains today. Barry was in constant communication on job progress throughout the day. I wish I could give 6 stars, seriously They even made the effort of retrieving the previous plumbers auger line so he could retrieve it, now that is class! read more

Our "new" house had a rusty 20-year-old gas water heater sitting ominously in the attic, and I really wanted to replace it with a tankless model. As I quickly found, pricing, quality and ability to retrofit existing gas lines all vary widely from company to company. My usual plumber had little experience with installing tankless heaters. Custom Plumbing came highly recommended by a friend who had them replace her two tank heaters with a tankless last summer. Barry, the owner, came out to assess the situation and gave me a very competitive bid. He was confident that it would work, and made several recommendations. We got on the schedule very quickly, and he pulled the necessary city permits. His plumber and assistant showed up right on time, and then so did Barry! He made sure all the work went smoothly, and they graciously worked around a street construction crew that showed up without notice to work right in front of my house that day. It was far from an easy job, especially with having to reroute some gas lines and to get the existing sediment-filled heater down the ladder and onto their truck. It must have weighed a few hundred pounds. I was really impressed with their knowledge, persistence, and diligence, because the entire job took about five hours from start to finish. Electrical work needed to be done to finish the job, and Barry made some recommendations to that end, as well. The electrician I hired afterward had no problem finishing his part of the job, and commented on how nicely it was set up. We are super happy that we took the plunge to get a tankless installed, and I'd recommend Custom Plumbing for this type of work without hesitation. read more

Get a rate before they come out. I had a very simple water heater job and the labor was $395. The plumber was very nice, and very good, but his actual time spent on the job was about 60 minutes. There was also a bit of time just chatting, so totaling 75 minutes. When they wrote up the bill they charged me for two hours, because it had gone over one and their rate was $395, plus the cost of the part. when I spoke to the boss, Barry, he said that $395 is their flat rate for changing out these parts because he has to keep overhead, a warehouse, gas for vans, etc. I just found it to be a little excessive and should have been explained. read more

First off, I am very handy and do all of my own home reno projects (aside from plumbing). When I gutted my bathroom and discovered that the shower valve needed to be recessed into the wall I searched the internet for a plumber (went through approx. 10-12) and some gave me a quote over the phone. Barry with Custom Plumbing however actually came to my home to look at the project WITHOUT charging me a service call fee which most of the others wanted to do whether or not you went with them....that alone in my book is just plain awesome customer service!!!!!!!!! Custom was the plumbing contractor on my new home and for 5 years we had issues with the upstairs commode. We called and they promptly came out twice but never was able to prevent it from backing up. They kept telling me it was our fault and that they had run a camera to the septic revealing no obstructions. After backing up again, I called 4 times but they would never call me and I began to suspect something else was wrong. I hired Adept plumbing to come out and within 10min had discovered an obstruction which turned out to be a 6" putty knife left in the line from construction. Everyone makes mistakes but come on, at least stand by your own work! Now I'm out hard earned money and Custom wont even return a call. read more

Instead of one guy for an hour or two, I had two guys busting their tails to fix the problem for at least three hours. Barry Samsel, the owner, said that the issue was their's and refused to take any more money, despite the obvious extra work that was done. I am a property owner who lives out of town. Custom Plumbing did all the initial work for the entire property when the two houses were moved onto the lot in 2009. The work was excellent. In April of 2019, the charge to flush two tankless water heaters at this same property was $360 -flat rate of $180 per unit regardless of having two units at one address. Two years later in April 2021, the rate for two units is $500 before a discount for having two units at one address. The end charge was $435 plus tax, over 20% increase in two years even after the discount. My complaint: no discount two years ago (i.e overcharged) and overpriced two years later. read more

He also hauled off the old one so that I didn't have to deal with it. He said the system needed a new shutoff valve for the incoming water, which he didn't have with him. Custom Plumbing installed the water pipes at my home ten years ago when it was built. I discovered during the recent winter freezes that at least one important stretch of pipe was not installed correctly when they froze and burst despite my taking all the usual precautions to prevent freezing. The plumber who made the repairs showed me how the pipes had been placed OUTSIDE the frame, right against the outer brick facade. No wonder they froze -- they received no insulation value from being inside the wall as they should have been. I made inquiries with the homebuilder. The builder (David Weekley Co.) shrugged, basically, on grounds of my warranty being expired. They would only suggest I contact the original contract plumber and throw myself on their mercy. Well, Custom Plumbing met my call with not only indifference, but hostility. "You got ten good years outta those pipes, what are you complainin' for?" sums it up. And "other plumbers are always saying something is not to code!" Yeah, OK. I get it. It's just my bad luck not to be a certified plumber so I can tell the difference, I should have been an engineer so I could personally oversee every construction aspect of my house. If you're stupid enough to hire an incompetent or dishonest plumber, it's your own damn fault. By now, I'm thinking "lawyer", so I talk to the Austin code compliance office and they tell me that since I live outside the city limits, the county has jurisdiction. And to my amazement, I am informed by the county agency responsible for building inspections that there is NO building code in Travis Co. Apart from a septic tank inspection, if necessary, you're evidently SOL if the builder wants to frame your home with Tinker Toys and use cardboard for shingles. Welcome to the ideal Libertarian dream world of no regulation by oppressive, intrusive government. So my suggestion is to be very wary about the quality of work to expect from Custom Plumbing and not expect any sympathy from them if they don't do the job right. read more
