After three companies gave us incredibly expensive bids to replace a hot water boiler, Dave came and said it wasn't broken and got it working in five minutes (air in the pipes or something) for a fraction of the price He also pointed out they othershad promised to get us permits they would not be able to get because updated city regulations meant only a new boiler in a new location could get permitted now so their bid didn't even include what would be a necessary move. We were in the midst of a DIY-gone-wrong -- while replacing a pedestal sink with a new vanity/sink, the knob on our cold water shutoff valve broke off completely (thankfully in the closed position!). We were nervous to replace the valve and shut off our water to the house since it was dripping. I sent requests out Sunday night, and Dave was able to come Tuesday - faster than any of the others we contacted. He fixed everything quickly and effectively, and finished installing the drain pipe since we needed a longer connector but were tired of making so many trips to Home Depot. Came out quickly and solved the problem, but a bit more expensive than expected. We wound up with a backed up sink that was leaking into the space below the sink late on a Sunday night. After trying to plunge it and removing the trap with no success, we decided we needed a professional. I called Henderson Plumbing around 8a Monday morning and he was there by 11a which is a pretty good response time. He was able to fix the problem after snaking the drain twice--he went too shallow the first time. But, $180 to snake a kitchen drain seemed a bit steep. read more

I interviewed several plumbers when considering who to hire for a fairly extensive remodel on our 1950's Central Austin home. I chose Henderson Plumbing because the owner (Dave Henderson) was the most responsive to my calls and emails. He also gave me a thorough bid upfront, so that there were no surprises. I'm glad I selected Henderson Plumbing for our remodel. Dave did a fantastic job at our home and was ALWAYS on-time. In fact, he usually arrived a few minutes BEFORE our scheduled appointment time. Also, because Dave lives in the neighborhood, he understands the complexities of the older homes. Dave is efficient, but does not do a rush job. Since then, Dave has answered any questions promptly. We are currently looking at installing a dishwasher (the house didn't come with one). Dave was willing to look at my choices and give me a recommendation on a dishwasher. Oh sink, you stink. Food scraps make a witches' brew. Noxious potpourri. Nothing good happens after 2 a.m. on most nights and after 6 p.m. on Sunday. 6:01, kitchen clean-up was interrupted by a sink that would not drain. So the lovely bits of dinner that were so tasty on our plates got to marinade overnight. As my son proclaimed the next morning: "Our house stinks!" That says a lot coming from a 9 y.o. By the time Dave got there, the sink had slowly drained. But he took the time to check things out and run the snake where the snake needed to be run to ensure there wasn't a repeat performance. I can confidently add Dave Henderson to my short list of reliable go to guys for service needs. I had the main water line to my home break...for the 2nd time in less then 8 months. The leak was so bad that i had to shut off the water to the house on the weekend. Let me tell you...being without water for several days in our society today is going to test you...or at least your wifes patience with you. This guy is great! He shows up punctually, and gets it done. He seems like a really nice fellow, too, on top of being competent and courteous. I recently sold my refrigerator, and realized that there was a small leak in the connection between the ice machine valve and the pipe-- nothing big, but not something I'd want to have continuing. Dave came out and fixed it in just a few minutes. Then, I asked if he could help me unhook my combo washer/dryer, and he helped with that, too. He unhooked the hoses and checked the connections to make sure they were in good shape while he was there. He even took the bathroom door off the hinges so we could get to it more easily! I recently had Dave replace my hot water heater and install a PRV value on my house, after putting both projects off for a while because I couldn't find a good plumber. He installed everything promptly, showed up on time for both appointments, and scheduled them early so I could get on with my day afterward. I also like the hot water heater, it's a nice one (Bradford-White), and qualified for a rebate from Texas Gas Service. I would definitely call him again if I have a plumbing problem come up. I happened to be held up at work and he kindly waited for me to arrive. He checked out my sink and waited patiently while I finished my work call. Dave is amazing and a wonderful person! My house flooded in Hermine about 5 weeks ago. Then this morning, I tried to move my fridge back to the wall and the hose from the water pipe into the fridge broke. I had water everywhere. I just couldn't handle any more water in my home. This was definitely my tipping point. I called many very nice plumbers on Yelp, all of which wanted to help but were busy. Dave had time, so he came over this morning. He fixed the fridge and then I asked him about the leaking toilette and he fixed that too. He was extremely reasonable, professional and very nice to deal with. My wife (Katie) has previously reviewed Henderson Plumbing and Dave's work, but after the amazing service we just got from him again, I feel like he deserves a review from me as well. This guy is the best plumber I've ever worked with: fast, affordable, friendly, and reliable. The hard freeze over the last 3 days caused a few of our pipes to freeze and we've been without water through much of the house. My wife is 8.5 months pregnant so we were pretty worried about the problem turning into a big one once the pipes thawed. We called Dave yesterday to give him a heads up. Today he called with perfect timing to check in on us just 5 minutes after we discovered that things were starting to thaw. He sent a helper, Jay, over in less that 45 minutes and while Jay diagnosed the problem and prepared the pipes, Dave picked up supplies. Dave dealt with replacing our fussy German fixtures which included several communications with the representative from Rohl...which turned out Dave knew more than they did! He replaced 3 sets of #!%$ German (but pretty to look at!) bathroom fixtures and flushed our Rinnai on demand system in a eco-friendly and economical way. Excellent communication! I don't think you'll find a better person who will tell you what time they will show up, what they are going to do and what it will take to get the job completed. Well, he's done it again.. as expected. LOL We had a new dishwasher installed by the Best Buy Geek Squad.. (by "installed" I'm using the term very loosely, kinda like the install was done.. Anyhooo... After they did they're damage, (I had to have my kitchen faucet rebuilt, and they broke a line to my disposal under the sink), I was told, "you'll have to call a plumber to fix the faucet and drain.. we can't do that...." So, having enlisted Dave's help about 5 yrs ago and thought (as a former homebuilder) his word AND his work, was/and still is, FIRST CLASS.. and it hasn't changed!!!! I had a bathtub that went from slow-drain to no-drain, so I decided to unclog it myself. After plunging for hours and using Liquid Plumber the tub was draining. A week later I realized that I hadn't unclogged the bathtub at all. Instead, I had broken a connection between the drain and the p-trap and it was flooding my crawl space every time I showered. I called Henderson Plumbing and Dave showed up, crawled underneath the house and replaced the old cast iron p-trap. He snaked the line and my bathtub was now draining properly. The job took almost 3 hours, because he had to take a couple trips to get the right parts, but Dave was very professional and did a good job. I plan on using Dave for all of my future plumbing needs and I highly recommend. read more

I hate being the first dissenting opinion, but I had a pretty poor to mediocre experience with Dave (aka Henderson Plumbing). And, you can see from my extensive review history, it's rare, rare, rare that I don't write a 4 or 5-star review. But, I feel like the issues were extensive enough that I should warn others. In short, we had 3 small-ish plumbing issues at our new house that I figured would be good to have fixed. We called around to a number of highly regarded, Yelp recommended plumbers, and Dave gave the lowest quote at $170 (the highest was $220). The issues were pretty benign: (1) We had a leaky hot/cold water spigot where the washer connects. It only leaks when the water is shut off and the washer is disconnected (so no problems when connected). But, we figured we'd go ahead and get it replaced, just so there isn't a future issue. (2) We had a master bath shower drain that backed up a little bit. It never caused issues w/ taking a shower, but more or less something that should be looked at anyway. The problem was hair from the previous homeowner that was lodged in the drain. (3) The cold water in the master shower turned hot/warm after 2-3 minutes. It wasn't burdensome, but was a buzz kill after a couple of hours of yard work in the Texas heat, and craving a cold shower. So, we set up an appointment for Dave to come out to our house on a weekday afternoon. The day of the appointment, just before he was to show, he called to reschedule b/c he'd gotten a last minute back doctor appointment. No sweat! Gotta take care of the ol' back. So, we rescheduled for the next day at 9:30 am. 9:30 comes around the next day......no Dave. 9:40.....no Dave. 9:50......no Dave. Finally, just after 9:50, he arrives. When he comes in, he kind of chuckles and offers a half-hearted "sorry I'm late", then totally dismisses it (as if forgiving himself for making us wait). Honestly, I don't mind so much that he was late, it happens to everybody. But, I do mind that (a) he didn't call to say he'd be 22 minutes late, and (b) when he arrived, his apology was pretty nonchalant (like the guy who bumps you pretty hard in the store, and just keeps trucking while offering a muttered "sorry". So, that was the first negative. Not a big one, but it let me know how much he valued me as a customer and my time away from work. So, Dave does his work, makes one run to the hardware store, and finishes up in about 3 hours (of course, he somehow managed to charge us for 3.75 hours....at $95/hr). He changed out the spigots & replaced the little drip pan that water from the spigot drains into. Had to cut a hole in the wall so he could grip the pipe to unscrew the hot & cold water spigots, but I gave him the thumbs up on that before he got started. He also dug out the hair from the shower drain and got that working as well. The hot/cold issue he wasn't able to fix, b/c our shower apparently needs a special cartridge to work. So, he did 2/3rds of the $170 job he quoted. So here's my problem.......when it was all said & done, he presented my wife a bill for $639. $223 for parts, $356 for labor, $25 for showing up (seriously, it's a line item on the bill), and $35 for using a machine. Aside from the fact that he actually had the gall to charge $25 to show up LATE, I'm a bit stupefied that a plumber would actually charge $35 if he has to pick up a took that is battery or electricity operated. He lists off the parts he used on his form, all of which have been marked up 200-400%......this on top of this $95/hr "labor" charge, which evidently includes time spent hunting for parts at Lowes he neglected to show up to the job with. The parts he used were about $50-75 at Lowes, yet he charged $223. What angered me about the whole deal is that I told him before he started that if he had any issues that were going to put us significantly over the $170 quote, to come get me (I was working out of my home office that day). He never came to get me. Not only did he never come to get me, when he was done, he never asked to speak to me to explain the extra costs. He gave the bill to my wife and convinced her to sign it w/o ever asking to speak to me. So, he managed to take a 3-part job that he quoted $170 on, do 2/3rds of it, and increase the cost by 376% w/o so much as uttering a single word to anyone (me or my wife) about the increased costs until he hands the bill to my wife and bolts before I can talk to him. Classy. I'm a business owner in the service industry. I work with clients much like Dave does. No matter how great someone's "performance" or product is, if they don't respect their client's time or money, and operate based on what's in the best interest of their wallet, rather than their clients, they're not worth much. I can attest, Dave does good work and has a good personality. But, his tactics are shyster-ish and his business etiquette is severely lacking. ~ Fabrico read more

We discovered a leak overnight and I called Dave as soon as I could in the morning. Not only was he up and answering calls at 8:15, but he was able to come by the same day. He showed up at the time estimated, quickly fixed the problem, removing ancient materials and replacing those that needed replacing with ease. He didn't mind my curious hovering either, which is a relief since I love picking up new knowledge. His price is quite reasonable as well. Disappointed. :( Dave came out quickly and solved the problem (in the short term), but he was more expensive than expected and I don't think he stood behind his service from a month and half ago... Dave originally came out and pumped out the backed up water and used a motorized "snake" to clean out the kitchen sink pipes. He mentioned that it was about 4 years worth of gunk in there (which lines up with the time we had our kitchen remodeled). When it was all said and done, just under an hour, the charge was $180. I thought, "WOW!" That's alot!", but declined to say anything because I had never called a plumber out to the house before and thought maybe these were the normal going rates. When I told my co-workers and friends what I paid they all scoffed at me and said I was very overcharged for this service. I chalked it up to a lesson learned. Well, just this week my kitchen sink backed up again. I called Henderson Plumbing again thinking "surely he did not fix it right the first time, otherwise why would it be backed up again in such a short time?". "Surely he won't charge me for a complete service call since he was just out here less than 2 months ago." Dave showed up and pumped the water out and used the snake again and completed the job in 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I was on a conference call with work, so I could not chat with him when he pulled out the bill...another $179.80!!!! I had to write out the check and grin and bear it. I've shelled out $400 for my kitchen sink in the last 2 months!! BTW- I live alone and work a lot. I cook maybe twice a week and I have a "grease" jar that I pour my grease into. Seriously, how could that lead to another full service call in such a short time? Frustrating and disappointing.... Pros: Speedy response.
