These Pastries Should Probably Be Illegal…read more Prep & Pastry has been serving Tucson since 2014, and after eating here, I completely understand why they've built such a loyal following. This review is only about the pastries because the rest of their menu deserves an entirely separate review. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly light and airy everything was. Every bite felt fresh, fluffy, and perfectly balanced. The frosting wasn't overly sweet, and nothing tasted heavy or overwhelming. As I've gotten older, I've become much more conscious about what I eat. Surprisingly, these pastries never leave me with that "I shouldn't have done that" feeling. They're indulgent without being excessive. Now let's address the real issue... I always buy two. Not because I'm planning ahead. Because I know exactly what's going to happen if I don't. I'll eat one in the parking lot, sit there for a minute pretending I'm satisfied, then make what is almost certainly an illegal U-turn and head back inside for another. At this point, I believe the owners should stand trial in a savory Food Court of Law. Dun... Dun... "In the Criminal Food Justice System, pastry-based crimes are considered especially delicious. In Tucson, the dedicated foodies who investigate these sugary felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Pastry Unit. These are their stories." Prep & Pastry is guilty of making "I'll just have one" the biggest lie you'll tell yourself all week. We went inside and politely asked if there is any chance we could get it iced instead since there was no option on the iPad. The owner herself took the drink and remade it, which we appreciated, but her attitude toward us after was unnecessary. She told us that next time we should order directly with them because we just "wasted their cups" and so on. We apologized again and explained that we would have selected iced if the iPad had actually given us that option, but she didn't really acknowledge what we were saying. What made the experience more disappointing is that I work in coffee myself, so I understand what it's like when things get busy. I chose Barista Del Barrio out of all the coffee shops in the area specifically because I'm Latino and wanted to support a Latino-owned business. If you're looking for a delectable dessert that combines the richness of chocolate with the tart sweetness of cherries, then look no further than the Chocolate Lovers Cherry Cake at The Cup Cafe in Tucson, AZ. From the moment this dessert is placed in front of you, your senses are immediately tantalized by the visual beauty of its presentation. A generous slice of chocolate cake is layered with cherry, which is both smooth and velvety. But it's not just the presentation that's impressive; the taste of this cake is simply heavenly. The chocolate cake is rich and moist, with a depth of flavor that comes from using quality ingredients. The cherry offered a nice contrast to the chocolate. What really sets this dessert apart, however, is the attention to detail. Each layer is perfectly balanced, creating a harmonious flavor profile that is both satisfying and memorable. And while this cake is undeniably decadent, it doesn't feel overly heavy or indulgent, making it a perfect choice for anyone who wants to treat themselves without feeling weighed down. Overall, The Cup Cafe's Chocolate Lovers Cherry Cake is an exceptional dessert that is sure to impress even the most discerning of palates. Whether you're a chocolate lover or a fan of fruity desserts, this cake is sure to satisfy. So if you're in Tucson and looking for a sweet treat, be sure to stop by The Cup Cafe and indulge in this masterpiece. read more

Management could use improvement af. Worked there for 6 months a new GM got hired Asia & I got fired about my "attitude". Never called out. Always came in to work and this new GM fires me bc of her personal opinions. Retaliation if you say, if I had an attitude it would've been talked about months ago. The Owner Richard is a stingy bastard & just cares about money. He told me one time when I was chatting with a customer that if I'm on the clock I should be working not interacting with customers. For someone who just got told to "fix my attitude" he's getting upset with me because I'm simply interacting with guests. An ugly ass environment who doesn't care if you're a hard worker or not, if they simply do not like you they will fire you for ridiculous reasons lol. And as soon as you complain about it & wanna talk to HR about it they make you finish your shift & then fire you. Asia is an ugly individual in & out, a manager that only has the name but doesn't know how to manage. If you come up as a threat, fired. Worked there for 6 months just to get fired from a bitch that JUST GOT HIRED. 2weeks tops. They'll allow call off's, harassment, & just about everything else but once you stand up for yourself you're the problem & they will get rid of the problem! I find it funny they fired me the day I was supposed to talk to HR lol. read more

We had dinner here and it was a big disappointment, not because of the food but because of the service, we both ordered the fish & chips & that was very good and a hefty portion but the problem started early, my diet coke was flat, so I asked the waitress if they had lemonade but they didn't, so I struggled to think of something else to drink, then I came up with orange juice, so she brought that out, she never came back and asked if the juice was ok, then when my husband got the bill he noticed he was charged 1 dollar more for his beer then was listed in the menu, so he pointed it out to her, not because it was alot but because she had been MIA most of the time, knowing our meal started out on a bad foot, never checking back on me to see if my drink needs were met & she never even apologized for the flat soda, she acted like she didn't care at all, after she fixed the bill she didn't even bring back 2 copies either (like they are supposed to) so he just left cash & we left, definitely won't be eating breakfast there. Worst customer service in a long time. Just awful. read more

I've been to Cup Cafe many times over the years and have always enjoyed their food. The huevos rancheros are pretty good, and I've also tried their standard breakfast with eggs, potatoes, and sourdough toast. The eggs are usually cooked well, and their potatoes are amazing. The sourdough toast is delicious, and their biscuits have always been a standout. However, I've noticed a recent change in the quality of the food compared to a year ago. The potatoes aren't as crispy as they used to be, and the biscuit was half the size of what I remember from my first visit. Despite these changes, it's still a great spot for breakfast, but I do miss the consistency they once had. read more

The food although was tolerable, the service was lacking, my wife had a problem with her soda & needed to order juice because there were no bubbles in the drink it was flat. She went with orange juice instead which was not even something she wanted with dinner but the only option left, and no apology even from the staff about the flat soda, but she never even asked if my wife was happy with the juice afterwards, just a lack of concern for customer satisfaction. That overshadowed the taste of the food. I wouldn't return or recommend. read more

Cup Cafe has a nice historical feel and a great ambiance, filled with lots of history. The staff was fast and efficient. However, the chilaquiles verdes did not suit our taste, as they lacked spice. I had been there several times in the past and eventually stopped going because the service was never great and the prices were simply too high for what you get. After avoiding it for years, I decided to give it another chance and took my 82-year-old friend there for brunch. And lo and behold, nothing has changed. The food was fine, but nothing memorable and certainly not worth the prices, in my opinion. There was nothing about our brunch that would make me want to come back for the food itself. The service was completely inattentive. We waited quite a while just to place our order and even longer to get our food -- and it wasn't even a busy day. Then there is the main door. We were sitting inside, and that door SLAMS every single time someone walks through it. It was jarring and unpleasant, over and over again, and the staff seemed completely oblivious to it. Such an easy fix! Add the same slow-close mechanism you already have on the door to the outside patio. Or at least put a note on the door and ask the staff to close it gently. And finally, when it was time to pay, the server stood right there looking over my shoulder while I used the portable terminal. It's uncomfortable and makes you feel pressured to leave a 20% tip -- especially awkward when the service you just received was not deserving of 20%. I really want to love this place because the setting is magical. But every time I give it another chance, I leave feeling the same way. It just falls short.

The prices are very reasonable. I chose half of the Anything for Love meatloaf sandwich without bread and it comes with choice of side. All of this for $11! That's hard to beat, and cheaper than fast food. The portion of meatloaf was easily 8 oz. The dining room was closed for lunch so I sat at the bar area, which is fun and dive-y. Easily the best meatloaf in town and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. The service was excellent.
