My wife and I decided to make the 35 minute interstate journey to Wake Forest to actually sample the cuisine that everyone is raving about. We each ordered a deluxe cheeseburger, my wife had a mint shake, and I had a raspberry shake. We split an order of onion rings. The burgers were quite excellent but different from other local establishments. The onion rings had a beer batter like crust and were excellent as well. The shakes were OMG! Extremely thick, so much so you had to enjoy with the provided spoon but eventually it melted enough to use a straw. The flavor of each shake was not over the top and not excessively sweet like some places. I only gave them four stars because it was our first visit and there is much more on their menu to sample so I will hold off on the fifth star until the next visit. So we were on a random ride to NC (ended up going to see family we haven't seen pre-COVID so it worked out perfectly). In reviewing burger spots in the area we ended up here and glad we did. Now as some of my fellow Yelpers stated the menu was a beast and hard to follow which lead to somewhat of an attitude by the cashier (which was also mentioned) but once I asked if he was ok and followed with this is our very first time here his attitude changed slightly. I get it. So I ordered the value double butter burger with cheese and Orings and washed it down with some of the best diet Rootbeer I've ever tasted and yea I do not drink calories, I rather eat them lol! Everything was piping hot and fresh, I'm usually not a beer battered Oring girl but these were fire! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal 5/5 and after the reviews I tried the custard which I'll give a 3/5 it was a bit sweet and not as creamy as I'm accustomed but it was a cool treat. I really wanted to like Culver's. I really, really did, but unfortunately we were less than thrilled with the butter burgers. The staff is nice and able to handle how hectic it still is as the new kid in town, but the food was just meh IMHO. First off, think Steak n Shake or Freddy's (in Durham and Cary), paper thin smashed down burgers on a flat top grill which are not my thing. And the butter on the bun is there, but overall tasteless and serve as no flavor addition to the thin burgers. Oh, if you don't tell them you want toppings on your burger they won't ask and it'll arrive plain, so I had to bring mine back for a redo. The fried Wisconsin cheese curds taste more like the seasoning in the breading than the cheese itself. Once I pulled off the breading I could taste that distinctive Wisconsin cheese flavor and that was good, but what it took to get there I'd rather not do again. My dining partner who loves custard and goes to Goodberry's regularly did say she liked the custard much better here at Culver's. Unfortunately flavor wise there's only three choices, chocolate, vanilla or the flavor of the day. You can dress it all up with all kinds of toppings, but still, just three flavors of the custard. One highlight was the cute little kid in full Culver's uniform busing the tables. He was probably no older than eleven or twelve, very serious about his job and cute as can be. Out and about on a Sunday afternoon and headed towards WF on Capital, my bride spied a sign that said "Culver's" and she started getting all kinds of excited about the place. I purposely passed the turn that would take us there because I wanted to finish my business first with getting my kitchen back-splash ordered. I bluffed about going home, but it was obvious I had been talked into some frozen custard goodness. The frozen custard flavor of the day was blackberry cobbler. Service was quick and our order was walked out to us within about five minutes. The frozen custard was pretty darned delicious! Tabletops were not clean - that was the downside of this visit. In a nearly empty dining area there was not a table top big enough for the 3 of us that did not have debris of some sort on it. read more

If you want something better than Wendy's or McDonalds nearby, come here. The burgers are cooked on a flat top and the vegetation they put on is very fresh, the lettuce was nice and crisp not soggy. The ice cream is just ice cream, nothing too fancy. They offer malts as well as shakes but I couldn't taste the malt in the malts and I'm a huge fan of malt powder. Might be awhile before we try Culver's again. The past few times, our order has been wrong. We get our usual, Value Basket, Bacon Deluxe. I get mine with pickles and without tomatoes. Not sure if I would have ever tried Culver's until a neighbor and friend who spent time in Wisconsin told me you have to try and and you have to have a butter burger. I had no idea what a butter was but I figured I would give the place a shot as my neighbor liked the place and said he thought I would as well. So the wife and I went one evening and she got some ice cream or custard sundae creation which she enjoyed. I went with a single butter burger and upgraded my meal to include cheese curds. I have had curds before so I knew that I wanted them to be part of the experience. The menu was a little overwhelming for a first timer and the girl behind the register did her best to try and explain things to me, but I am not sure I got the best value meal but who knows. So back to the food. I am now a fan of butter burgers. They are delicious and I enjoyed it with my cheese curds. My only issue was I had tomato on my burger and was charged $.25 for one slice of tomato. Tomato is not a premium condiment for a burger. So 4 stars not 5. We've been twice. Took so long to get two sundaes that they gave us certificates for two free ice cream products. Ok, that's fine. Went again this past Sunday, took forever for take out. Culver's is one of my favorite casual dining restaurants. The food is fresh cooked not pre-cooked. Every Culvers is hospitable and the staff always greet you like a long lost friend. This Culvers is an hour away from my house, but the trip is worth it. The hamburgers are great but I come for the fresh Atlantic Cod. The 2 and 3 piece Cod is just delicious.. It has a very light bread crumb coating and is always mild, flaky and tender. I prefer the Cole slaw over most restaurants slaw. This particular restaurant is always clean and so are the restrooms. Of course, I cannot say enough good things about their frozen custard. It is smooth and creamy. Being a Minnesota based company they specialize in good custard. Most of the customers are friendly as the atmosphere attracts friendly people. With so many casual dining restaurants to chose from you will be happy if you to eat at Culvers. read more

One of our co-workers had mentioned that we should try Culver's as it is a Wisconsin style restaurant chain. Since we had not been to one before (and there is one in our area), we decided to give it a try. Their menu is a bit confusing as it doesn't really explain what you can order for your sandwiches in terms of toppings. I had to ask the employee via the drive-thru intercom what our options were. I wound up ordering a crispy chicken sandwich with a side of their cheese curds and my fiance ordered the Mushroom and Swiss Butterburger with the same side. Their drive thru process is different than most as you pull up to the window to pay after ordering and are instructed to pull forward to wait for your food. They hand you a number and don't really clarify where to go. Luckily, we had someone in front of us and followed their lead. It took about 15 minutes for us to receive our food. The line behind us was long and we all had our numbers displayed on our window. One of the employees came out, handed us our food, and took our number. We started off trying the cheese curds which were just okay. They tasted like fried mozzarella bits. It seemed like there was a mixture of cheddar (?) and mozzarella in the curds; but, you couldn't really distinguish the difference as the breading flavor overpowered the cheese. As for my chicken sandwich, it was gross. Honestly, I am not a very picky eater, there isn't much that grosses me out with food, and I don't like wasting food. However, I could barely make myself eat the sandwich. I don't know what it was but the chicken tasted weird and the overall sandwich was not good. My fiance said that his burger had little to no flavor, as well, and was hard to eat because it was so greasy. This was pretty disappointing as their food is not cheap! Chicken fingers ordered from the children's meal tasted and smelled like cleaning chemicals. It was seriously disturbing to think I was eating chicken that tasted like it was soaked in Lysol. That was a take out order, I called and spoke with the manager and they apologized. But I am turned off to the place. Fantastic food and a nice variety of fast food. Kind of a Dairy Queen looking building, but the atmosphere and food is waaayyyyy better. The burger choices are very good and tasty. Being from the Midwest, it was a pleasure to find breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches on the menu. We have been back a few times and the last visit tried the Reuben, which again was very tasty. The frozen custard is very good and they really make it hard to buy one pint at $4.39 when you can choose from four for $9.99. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The place may appear busy at times, but they are usually very well staffed and move orders along very quickly. Orders are made to order, so when using the drive-thru, expect to be given a number and pull around to the front of the building. As soon as the order is ready, someone will bring it out to the car and off you go. When we do fast food now, we go to Culvers. Nice to see a popular Midwest operation here in Wake Forest. read more

You have to understand, this is a Mid-west thing--specifically a Wisconsin thing. The land of dairy and beef has produced the butter-burger, the fried cheese-curd, and paired it with frozen custard. It's pretty awesome. Try the cheese-curds. If you're native North Carolinian, don't be afraid. It tastes like a cheesy hushpuppy. Expand your horizons. If you get a burger, I STRONGLY suggest you get it the way it is supposed to come--withOUT mustard and ketchup. You can get sides of that if you really want to, but I wouldn't suggest it. Last time I said, "all the way" and they assumed I wanted it "yalled-up." WIth mustard and ketchup it's just too wet. I meant, "all the way, like it says on the menu" with just mayo. It also takes a while. It is made to order. Expect that. And it's pretty expensive. That's probably because every meal has several dollars worth of butter in the recipe. Try it.
