    Wonton soup

Visiting Montreal on vacay and my parents wanted Chinese, so a short walk to Chinatown brought us here since they were open late. Service is ok, pretty typical Chinese restaurant and the food had some hits & misses. First, don't bother with the dim sum; it's all just reheated frozen items. Also, HK wonton soup was a miss. As was the deep fried tofu; nice concept, but not enough tofu and too much batter. The good: seafood noodles were nice and crisp w/plenty of seafood. The pork chops were tasty w/no fatty parts and tasting like my childhood. And the crab was delicious and fresh.

We stopped into this chinatown restaurant purely based on the fact that it was the least crowded (all the other places had a huge line). We were seated fairly quickly. what I noticed right away was that the menu was separated into three sections - an english one, a chinese one, and a vietnamese one. My chinese reading skills aren't great, especially for traditional chinese, but right away I noticed that the menus were different! The english one was way less diverse, with mostly American chinese food. I asked the staff if there was a translation available, and they just said no and walked away. I was quite upset that I was relegated to the 'english' menu, without any offer of help. We ordered a beef dish and a mixed vegetable dish. They came at a reasonable pace and were decent but not spectacular. I would have really liked to have tried more 'traditional' dishes...I realize it's mostly my failing for not studying my Chinese properly as a kid, but having some help from the staff to answer a few questions would have been much appreciated.

Excellent and quick service. Came during lockdown for takeout to celebrate chinese new year. 75$ menu included cantonese fried lobster, a very generous portion of chicken, fish and brocolli and beef that i switched out for seafood tofu fish for 5$. Was ready in 20mins. Warning- hold the takeout boxes by the bottom- they all have a lot of sauce and leaked out when i held the bags from the handles

After a relatively late night and quite a few drinks I wanted to have some type of soup noodle before going to bed. It was around 1:45AM by the time my cousin and I got back to Chinatown, which was where our hotel is located. We tried to go to Keung which was nearby but that closes at 1:00AM. Lucky for us Cuisine Cantonaise opened till 4:00AM. We walked in and were seated immediately. I was surprised to find it pretty busy but then again it was the only place open this late. The menu has a few pages in English and French and then several pages at the end in Chinese. Too bad my Chinese isn't good enough to order from that menu and the English/French list for soup noodles had maybe 5 options. My cousin in his broken Cantonese asked the waiter what options of soup noodles they had. He ordered a wonton noodle soup with wide flat noodles and I ordered the beef stew noodles. I thought my dish was decent, of course full of MSG and the beef didn't have the chewy and skin parts that most beef stews have so that was slightly disappointing. My cousin thought his wontons were too small. And of course I responded with "That's what she said." Anyways, now to the real draw of the place. It's an awesome people watching place at night apparently. After sitting down for a bit and waiting for our food, 3 middle aged Chinese prostitutes came in with their pimp. They had hot pot, so if you're craving late night hot pot you can get it here. I watched the table of prostitutes closely cause it was really interesting. 2 guys came in to talk to them within a 10-15 minute span of time. With the first guy, I had no idea what was going on and second well he talked to them and also the guy at the counter. The guy at the counter apparently lost a lot of money on a race... I know I totally went on a tangent but to sum it up. The food is decent, there's a huge menu you can choose from if you can read Chinese, and there's awesome people watching at night!

Came here on a Thursday night. Got the Chefs Combo Dinner for three: - Wonton Soup: super flavorful and amazingly light dumplings - Spring Rolls: light, crisp, delicious - Dumplings in Peanut Butter Sauce - yum - Lobster - excellent - Prawns - Bok Choi was great as were prawns - General Tso Chicken - average - a little chewy and too sweet - Canton Fried Rice - excellent We also ordered a bottle of cold sake but this was merely hot sake that they then put on ice - so I would not recommend it. Overall though the food was really good and the portions were large (three guys couldn't finish) and the combo meals make ordering very easy. Finally - it was cheap!! Awesome.

Old School Cantonese food in the heart of Montreal's Chinatown…read more It's been a while since I've had complimentary pork bone and vegetable soup and seen white plastic sheeted table tops for easy cleanup. LOL. Portions are family style so bring a group with you to share. Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - easily the best dish, great crunch and great flavor. Snow peas sautéed with Garlic was clean, fresh and crunchy. Garlic flavor wasn't overly done. Beef Stew over Baby Bok Choy was tender and beefy. The Baby Bok Choy was hidden underneath in my picture, but it was there. There was also beef tendons as well which I always enjoy. Salt and Pepper Squid was a huge portion and similar to Pork, very crunchy. This was a huge portion. Got seated right away in a packed restaurant on a Friday evening. Service was quick and friendly (except for one dude who took exception to me want to pack my own leftovers). LOL.

I was expecting a more flavored experience and maybe that is not what they do or I could have ordered differently. The menu is huge so it is hard to know where to start. We went here because of the good Yelp reviews. Were we arrived in Chinatown there were many other places that looked great, so we loitered at the door for a minute while deciding what to do. As we loitered a family came out and noticed us and asked if were were going to Keung Kee. We said we were thinking about it and they said just go, it is the best restaurant in Chinatown. Sold. We went in, up the stairs, waited a bit, and got a table. This is the kid of place you need to bring a lot of people because that is whet it is built for, the menu is extensive, and the portions are huge. We puzzled over the menu then ordered our food. We wanted a bottle of cold sake and the waiter brought it in an ice bucket. Nice. We started with the pork dumplings. The dumplings were very goof but came in a hot thick sweet peanut sauce. With a lighter sauce these would have been outstanding. The scallop was huge and had a bunch of stuff on it. There was some good scallop flavor but it was masked with all the stuff that tasted like old oil. The noodle dish was good but also had some old oil flavor coming from somewhere. All the meats and vegetables were nice and fresh but the good sauce I think was the source of the oil. We saw a table next to us had the pork chops and was asked, what are those? So we got that too. The chops were thin bone in with a batter fried then soaked in a vinegar sauce. These would have been good as our only item with a bowl of rice. Our co-eaters there had many good looking things. I would give this a try again but would bring a few more people so we could try more stuff. Total for all that including the sake was $100 Canadian. Not bad!

What I didn't know at the time is: (1) they also have NYC locations, including their U.S. flagship 1/2 block from Tonii's, one of my favorite Chinatown cheap eats and (2) Yin Ji Chang Fen's chains origin is in Guangzhou in 1958... and that location still exists! So, it was a must try! Glad we stopped by and would recommend it for a try, especially if you are looking for a convenient bite while on Ste. Catherine Oeste. (Note - Did not get the chance to check out other steamed rice roll places in Montreal, but will definitely do on my next trip.) About the restaurant experience... while they have printed menus, you use the QR code on the table to order, although there was a helpful waiter to assist. We ordered a fresh Shrimp with Chives and a Roasted Duck with Chives Steamed Rice Roll. Peanut sauce needed to be ordered as an extra. They provide complementary hot tea. (You can also order a can of Chinese iced tea.) Yin Ji Chang Fen's rolls were delicious, especially the roast duck! The sauces added make the rolls even more vibrant. Note - Didn't get the chance to check out other Montreal steamed rice roll places, but will definitely do on my next trip. Also at one point back home, will also check out their N.Y. Chinatown location to compare. To add, Congee appears to be another Yan Ji specialty, however it's not something I typically order.
