Here is a little hint, if you go somewhere once, upset at your meal and drop a 1/5 star bomb - don't bother posting your review and wasting people's time. I've been eating here religiously for years and have tried almost everything on the menu. It has portions that make any other restaurant in the area cringe, and if i go here with someone seeing their food and complaining they "have too much" then i think i may flip. Why do people continuously think too much of a good thing is bad? Prices are high, but your getting food that is never frozen, high quality and large large portions. The pulled pork is actually made from partial rib meat and tenderloin, and has become a $5 favorite of mine for over a year now. Its always the first thing i recommend to people eating for the first time. Its a great gateway food to all the other things they have, sandwiches or meals. Their steaks are way above average, and definitely are better than chain steak houses, but not on the par of wolfgangs and Peter Lugers. But rest assured, your in for some good food. The ribs are actually one of my least favorite foods here. They are good, dont get me wrong but i dont necessarily go wild over them. For $22, their full rack is actually a rack and a half of anywhere else, so you are getting your money's worth, but i still think that theres many other things to try over their ribs. Burgers - A- (we are spoiled by White manna and 5 guys burgers in the same town - but if you are looking for the tastiest "large" burger, this will fit the bill) Chicken Sandwiches - I have not had better, ever A+ Pulled Pork - A Steaks - B Ribs - B Fries - C+ Many varieties, but they come out too crispy (almost like potato chips) because they use high grade oil to fry things in Alright, i think I'm done here. I pass by this place all the time when I go grocery shopping at H-Mart and I LOOOOOOOOVEEE BBQ..... seriously... who doesn't? don't answer that :P anyway... definitely disappointing. Just to see what they offered I tried the chicken and rib combo. I found the chicken to be dry and the ribs to be over sauced and way to sweet. Not utterly disgusting terrible but you won't find me back there anytime soon. I also thought that for what it was it was really expensive. Been going to Cubby's for the past 10 years, food has is always great. About once a month my family starts asking when we are getting Cubby's for dinner. I have never eaten in the restaurant, always take away. Seating is kinda small, and gets very crowded on weekend nights. Portions are large, the full rack of ribs has to be cut in half and piled on the platter, Buffalo Wings are amazing, burgers are cooked perfectly and even after driving home a Med Rare stays Med Rare. There are many options and everything is customized down to what kind of roll you would like with your burger. The only issue I have ever heard and read on Yelp is that the prices are high. Yes the prices are a little higher but this is a "non chain" restaurant in a stand alone building in North New Jersey. It is a big hit to the wallet when you buy for a family but it is the best BBQ in the area. If you are looking for more affordable BBQ there is a TGI Fridays close by. If you are looking for a quality meal that is not part of an assembly line type restaurant Cubby's is the best in North NJ. read more

I tried living in New Jersey for a total of 5 months, and it just didn't work out; I felt so alone and unloved :(. During my last weeks there, I visited Cubby's with a friend, and I got a feeling a warmth and satisfaction that I'd never thought I'd feel in jersey. The place gives off a cozy vibe, something about the wood and brings about memories of a ski lodge. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich on garlic bread, piled high with onions, with a side of sweet potato fries and a beer. Good lord, cot damn, I wanted bbq, and I got it, in one bite, my mouth was swimming in delicious meaty sauciness. What happened to this place? I've been coming here since I was a kid and whatever they did, it isn't the Cubby's it used to be. First off, I agree Sue G. said on 8/3/2014, I made the EXACT same comments in the car after we left. The best part was the coleslaw. Which btw, a $14 burger it better be amazing (starts at $12, but after you add caramelized onions, cheese, non-existent garlic bread it runs up to $14, which you don't figure out until after you pay). We also ordered the Cajun Chicken Sandwich and Chili Fries. There was nothing Cajun about the chicken and it was dry as a bone, although the portion was huge for a half. We actually ended up putting the cole slaw on the chicken sandwich The chili fries were even worse. Crinkle cut frozen fries with a slop of canned chili. Yuck. Go to any NJ diner for real chili fries. I hope this place turns around, because in Bergen County there are plenty of other BBQ places that put this place to shame. read more

Tried them out for the first time yesterday and I was very impressed. The service is outstanding and food is phenomenal. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries that came with a side of coleslaw. The fries were really crispy and delicious and the burger was absolutely perfect. It was extremely juicy and each bite was full of flavor. Easily one of the best burgers I've ever had. Only thing I disliked was the price. My meal, which I ordered a drink with, cost roughly $17, which is a little bit more than what I was expecting. In North Jersey, the options for GOOD BBQ restaurants is limited. This is where Cubby's comes into play. I have been coming here for a few years now, and each time I leave the restaurant, I can't wait to plan my next trip back. The ribs are a must have each time I pay a visit, and as of late, started getting a half rack just so I can enjoy the other specialties. Portions are HUGE... and more times than not, I find myself bringing a little bit home with me to enjoy the next day. The pulled pork is flavorful, and there are plenty of side options from baked beans, to fries, to sweet potato fries. If you want more than water, soda, or iced tea, guests can purchase beer to drink while enjoying their BBQ. So, if you are looking for solid BBQ food, in a not so BBQ-friendly area, definitely pay Cubby's a visit! read more

We went in for lunch and $16 for a half-rack of ribs seemed steep... so the sandwich, soda and fries I ended up with still came out to 16 bucks, which feels about $3 too much. Ended up going with the Pulled Pork Sandwich. Got the full sandwich on garlic bread. The garlic bread flavor was lost amidst the pork and BBQ sauce. The full sandwich is good for two people -- it's a pretty large serving. The waffle fries were quite good, nice and crispy, but again, a little pricey. We all have our opinions. Do they matter in the long run? That's open to question. My opinion is the following. I find Cubby's ribs only adequate, the sauce too sweet and the tab too high. We came here for dinner after our first choice was not open last weekend. We were all beef hungry, so all 3 of us had some kind of steak. Me and the SO split the skirt steak and our friend had a cowboy steak. Everyone was happy with how our steaks were cooked and I liked the toast (not strong on the garlic side, but buttered and tasty). This was our first time here and my friend's first time dining in here. Self serve for soft drinks and you could order beer. You place your order at the counter and you are given a buzzer to let you know when your meal is up. The food at cubbys is simple but significant. The food is always consistent and satisfying. It can be a little heavy on the wallet but it's always well worth it due to the quality and quantity of what you get. If you've never been then you have to get the pulled port or the ribs. If you've been before don't be afraid to try something else on the menu. Personally my favorite meal at cubbys is the slice steak over toast points. I get cheese on it and always ask for gravy. Tonight I decided to switch things up and get a half pound burger platter. The meat was juicy, the lettuce and tomato fresh and crisp, and the bread was good too. Food is always Excellent. Staff is always friendly. The cleanliness of the restaurant is what always stands out to me. Typically, when you go to a BBQ or a "greasy" food place, the walls and floors are you usually as greasy as the food. The price is on the higher end. First of all, when my wife and I entered and picked what we wanted from menu, price went from 18$ for half rack of ribs to 22$ without letting me know that anything that I pick is EXTRA. I was not happy camper when came to pay and I was told that for 2 person dinner I have to pay 43 $ .... but ok I thought and we sat down. When food came , portions were big. coleslaw salad in small container tasted sour and mushy... Ribs were falling off the bone... and that`s all from Pros... Meat was cooked before and just heat up before served, for sure was not in smoker as it suppose to. It had too much BBQ sauce, which was extremely sweet and killed taste of meat TOTALLY... I knocked off one star for two very small reasons-1, I am not in love with the location (It's really far south in Hackensack) and 2, there are no paper towels in the bathrooms, just blow dryers. If I'm eating BBQ, I want to be able to wash my hands and face afterwards and that is just not possible if there are no paper towels in the bathrooms. HOWEVER-the food here is amazing. My boyfriend and I come in here every couple of months and we both get the ribs-he gets a full rack and I get a half. It is so much food and these ribs are truly the fall off the bone ribs that the South talks about. I have yet to have a rack of ribs that compares to these. All racks of ribs come with complimentary garlic bread (again, generous portions) and a side. I usually get the mac and cheese but they have quite a few sides to choose from that are all very good. I've also gotten lunch to go from here before-the pulled pork or pulled chicken sandwiches come on top of the garlic bread I mentioned earlier! OMG YUM! Personally, I'd go more to the 3.5 stars for Cubby's. I haven't sampled a wide variety of their food so I cannot speak for the full menu, but the BBQ combo platter is reasonably priced and can easily fill two people up for a little more than $20 - which is great in my book. I also enjoy the buffalo wings. The place is usually packed which is almost a guarantee that they'll be churning out fresh, hot food throughout the day/night which makes the dining experience better. I don't consider it to be a full BBQ restaurant since it's primarily chicken and ribs. This is good, not great BBQ, but it's certainly the best within X miles in the Dirty Jerz. Makes me realize how much I miss Stickey's (formerly on Teaneck Rd.) and their full throttle BBQ menu and AMAZING deep fried Oreo's and deep fried Snickers bars (now that's dessert and I can feel myself getting fatter just thinking about them!!) read more

Been coming here for probably the last ten years. Even though it's been forever since we've lived on the East Coast, we always find time to come by this great establishment for some great cooking. The owner and staff always greet us with a warm welcome and the minute we hear that, we know we are home. Great food all around. The bbq and the Texas Weiners are a hit with us. Very over priced for a self serve place. Food was good and the servings are favorable but I don't see myself coming back. This was my first time here and I've lived in the area for 30 years! Friendly staff but just too deep for my pockets. $67.36 for a steak and grilled chicken parmigiana platter...$3.00 for soda! Today I got the spicy Chili. Their Chili is a basic Texas Red Chili (no beans). One of us chose the spicy Chili with raw onions and no cheese and one tried it with cheddar cheese. It had a nice rich reddish brown color and had a good consistency, neither too thick or too watery. It's spicy bite was much stronger than its smell. A spicy chili like this could have used more Cumin to round it out. Its spicy bite was well matched to its aftertaste. It is made with ground beef which is certainly common for restaurants today. I would have preferred a much coarser grind to give it a more interesting texture. Overall I would say it had a strong bite but weak chili smell and taste. I am looking forward to trying their "regular" chili next time to see if it is better balanced. read more

Cubby's offers good.....maybe very good but not great baby back ribs. Their fries are just OK and menu is limited, even by bbq restaurant standards lacking basic offerings such as cole slaw. The ribs are nicely cooked, tender in texture and fall off the bone. They are a bit heavy in a sauce that lacks real inspiration.
