Where to start, we were given only one serving of water each, no water was offered until we asked for the bill. My BLT was served on a burger bun, the "tomato bisque" had a pile of cheddar cheese on top with salad croutons, and the soup was obviously from a can or bag, not a "soup of the day" like advertised. When my food was served it had a long, black curly hair in it, thankfully I noticed before eating anything and they replaced my food with what I assume was a fresh plate. But I couldn't stomach a bite if it still. Was given a menu for their new restaurant and asked to go "try it today" while sitting to eat at their establishment already. The frames on the walls had some photography, and the prices for the PRINTED photographs were obscene. The music was controlled by who I assume was one of the waiters, constantly skipping songs and changing the music genre. This was our second time, we went back because the bk and we loved the pancakes were so good, but our server gave us a bad attitude after we got our table, she was nice and asked for drinks, and while she was getting them we started getting cold because the A/C was high and the vent on top, we asked to be moved, and the other nice lady help us, but our server I don't remember her name she was tall, like copper color hair started to act with an attitude and you can tell that she wasn't happy that we moved, every time we ask for something we would show how annoying she was with us just because we moved, and she had to serve us our her section, it was one of the most uncomfortable moments you couldn't even talk to her, I would even believe she rolled the eyes to us when I put in the receive to don't be too obvious that she was upset with us for that she showed the others and laughed in our faces. We've been coming here for breakfast since we moved to Tucson a decade ago. It is one of our go-to breakfast spots. They don't have as extensive a menu as Baja Cafe, but what they do they execute very well. The specialty of the house is their pancakes (see photos). They are very thin, tender, and so big they don't fit on the monster plate they are served on. Delicious, but VERY filling. Check the chalkboard near the counter for the specials. Most of the time they are items on the menu, but they give you a bit of a price break. Service is great, the wait staff is always very cheery, efficient, and they keep your coffee cup full. Parking and access is very easy: they are in a strip mall at the corner of Orange Grove and Thornydale, so you can enter from either road, and there is tons of parking. They are often very busy (e.g. Sunday mornings), and don't have a lot of waiting space, so you might end up waiting outside. read more

Horrible Service My son and I stopped by for the first time today. Although the food was good, I don't know if I would go back. First we stood in the doorway with another couple for over 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged. Once seated it was sometime before our server approached. She kept repeating our order to us and making a mistake each time. I waited 15 minutes and still had not received our beverages. I went to the register and asked for our coffee and Coke. Six minutes later she brought a Coke and asked if I had wanted something to drink. Once again I requested coffee. We never got a refill. When the food was delivered by another server the order was wrong. They took part away and left part. Then we received the rest of the original order. The server said, "The problem is that I didn't take your order." But she had. She was so confused. On top of the poor service, we were double charged on everything. No one brought me my check. Someone did however clear my plate and not communicate to my server that I was ready for my bill and that my cup was empty. You can get them with bacon or blueberries, or bananas, and they are delicious! Crying, onions, pancakes are definitely a comfort food because they just make me happy. If you love, pancakes, forget every other place in Tucson, and go to the crying onion, you will not be disappointed. They are reasonably priced and it's just a lovely place to have a nice breakfast. The downfall I found is the added 2.3% charge for processing... you know the cost of doing business that most business' include in the cost of their product or service... this one however has a note at the bottom explaining that it's been passed on to the customer paying with cc and further more to the servers tip . What a great place for breakfast. This was our first trip and we will definitely come back when in the area. I had the ham and eggs and my wife had the chicken fried steak. We both ordered our eggs over easy and they were done to PERFECTION. It seems they are always either over or under done. These were absolutely perfect. The ham was delicious as was everything else on my plate. The chicken fried steak was delicious and HUGE! The portions here are not skimpy. If you leave hungry it is your fault. Our waitress was awesome. Funny, helpful and on point. I think her name was Michelle (maybe. My bad for not remembering.) I would definitely recommend this place for breakfast. I've only been here many years ago and didn't care for it. But a few weeks ago, we tried and I'm very happy that we did! It was a Sunday around 8 and the place was packed. We were told to sit anywhere, and we picked one of the few clean, available tables. It was about 20 minutes before someone took our drink order and left menus. They did seem short staffed so we were patient. I had the veggie/bacon omelet with hashbrowns and white toast. My husband had the western scramble with beans, home potatoes a tortilla. The food came out 10 minutes later. I have to say it was the best omelet I ever had and the toast (although they brought me wheat instead of white) was delicious. Big thick buttery slices. My husband said the second cup of coffee he had was a 7 out of 10, I stuck to orange juice. Our server came back twice to ask if everything was ok. One of the downfalls was the our server never came back to our bill as well as two of the tables next to us. After waiting about 15 minutes all three tables went to the register to pay. The food was definitely 5 stars and service was about a 3. Definitely going back!!!!! read more

This adorable little restaurant is located in the strip mall of Sam Levitz -- toward the back. Arriving, Crying Onion seems very quiet and docile, but this place gets to be very, very busy. The wait was almost 15 minutes, and it was worth it. For the anxious, they have magazines and newspapers at the entrance for the wait. You can tell by the space that someone is putting their heart into it. It's the kind of restaurant I would have liked to have taken my great-grandmother. On the wall, you will find framed photos -- sometimes still in their original cardboard cases -- of generic landscape photography: cactus plants, canyons, wildlife. They even have quilts thumb tacked to the walls, and most every wall is sponge painted in teal. No lie. This place is rigged for comfort and low maintenance. I imagine that if Tina Turner and David Bowie weren't world-famous icons, this is where they would spend their Sunday morning brunch. The staff is uber friendly -- granted, run off of their feet because the customers just keep coming through the door. And right now, the cafe is decorated with plastic leaves and branches for the fall season, which gives it a very light, bright and loud feel. I was surprised to find the diverse range of folks waiting for tables and enjoying their meals. Yes, this place does have a sizable draw of people who look like they have just come off of a cross country trip in their RVs. But you also find families of all sizes, young couples, college-age friends and the like. Classic, all-American neighborhood diner-style. They also have Smuckers jelly in cute little baskets on all the tables. I love that. And the place keeps pretty cool, thanks to the fans overhead. Strange thing, though: you cannot smell the food. But you can smell the strong tinge of black coffee. Also, the music dips in and out. You can't really hear it -- lest, the music is full of low-range pitches, at which point you can hear the monotonous sound of the bass, and that is about all. Which begins to scratch your nerves after a while. Seems like the go-to menu items for folks are the omelets, pancakes and scramblers. All seem very popular. I went with the eggs Benedict! I have been trying to master hollandaise sauce at home. Until that day, I will continue to frequent - with robust enthusiasm -- places like the Crying Onion. Here, the hollandaise is bright orange (yes, orange), thick and with a slight sharpness from the lemon. I gather that they make it in bulk rather than with each order. I have been going here for breakfast on and off for 9 years. I love the food here, but man the experience varies. My husband has a rule, if you can't get there before 9am don't bother. They can get busy fast! When it's busy it's hard not to let that distract you from the meal your about to receive, since the tables are close together and the space gets noisy. A few times I've been seated in the booths which are along the front of the establishment; at busy times customers will hold open the front door waiting to put in their name, causing either hot air or cold air to blow on me. Boo. They have consistent food quality and service. It isn't the best in town, but it's good. I have a fondess for their chocolate chip pancake, with whipped cream. The pancake edges are crispy and yummy. I couldn't eat more than one one, since one is the size of a platter. They offer a good eggs benedict. I like the homey interior, with shelves holding bird houses, quilts on the wall and race car stuff all over the wall near the front desk. Also in the last few years, they added framed photography for sell all over the wall (who buys theses I do not know; gem and mineral show people?). The coffee cups are a mixed lot of local things, halmark mugs and fun things. I always look at my mug once i'm seated to see what I get. They have once unisex bathroom in the back, which is always clean. However, if you have a large party keep in mind there is one bathroom for everyone to share. Frequently we take out of town company here;when my sister visits, for breakfast it's a must go to. I've been here for lunch and dinner (seasonally offered); but it's the breakfast that have kept me going back again and again. read more

The Crying Onion holds a soft spot in my heart. My husband and I used to come here for breakfast on occasional Sunday mornings and we always had great food and customer service. However I haven't been back since he passed 3 years ago. My daughter L and I were out bright and early on Saturday morning and decided to get our morning fuel at the CO. This place gets PACKED but like I said, we were out really early and were able to walk right in and be seated immediately! That has NEVER happened to me here before. The CO posts daily specials on the white board up by the hostess/cashier station by the kitchen and on this day, we both chose a special. Mine was the 1/2 biscuit & gravy, side of bacon (or sausage) and one egg. L had the blueberry french toast special that included an egg and bacon or sausage. My dish was cooked perfectly and the gravy was so good and flavorful. Just like home! I really like the bacon at CO, it's meaty and thick. L's blueberry french toast was soft yet a bit crusty and soooo good. A light dusting of powdered sugar covered the top and melted right in to the dish, enhancing the sweet flavor all the more. The decor here is definitely country kitchen kitsch and to be honest, looks a little tired. But perhaps all that crap on the walls and shelves adds to the charm of this little place. And who doesn't love the mismatched, often sporting local business logos, coffee-cups?! I just wish they served a better cup of coffee in those thrift store cups. The coffee tastes a bit bland. I think they'd do well to liven up the morning java to appease all the coffee connoisseurs. read more

Love the Blueberry Pancake. If you have breakfast in the early mornings, be prepared for freezing temperatures inside the restaurant. It really sucks that the food is fantastic. However, you can't enjoy it because it's soooooooooooo COLD inside. The pancakes are so lovely, but they get cold because of the very low temperatures. What a great family-run breakfast place. It's quaint, simple and lots of great service and classic breakfast/lunch options. My husband and I split a patty melt - the server was wonderful at splitting the plate for us, and offering us an extra side for $2. My niece tried the BLT wrap. She tried the potato salad and thought it was okay - but next time she'll try the fries (which were nice and crispy!). This is a small store-front diner that doesn't look like much from the entry, however, the food was delicious and the service was outstanding. We visited on a Sunday morning based on a recommendation from neighbors. I ordered the eggs scrambled with veggies and cheese with sides of tater tots and their speciality coffee cake. My husband ordered the SOS toast with potatoes on the side. My eggs were scrambled just right and the tater tots were crispy and salty (as they should be). First time there. The food was great. Service was terrible. Waited 40-45 minutes for our order. An employee was arguing with another employee and quit. The poor waitress was working herself ragged working 20 tables or so. The cashier (not sure if manager or not) scolded the waitress because now she had to bus the tables too. With one caveat this is a solid 4 stars breakfast and lunch spot. My qualm was the way bacon was treated on my Cobb salad. Seriously, blah crumbles instead of a couple of actual pieces. My vegetable-beef soup was good and not over-salted. My wife's burger was properly cooked and the toppings spot on. The outstanding item, however, were absolutely delicious onion rings. I have to start off by saying that I've eaten here often and it was always OK, but this experience from today has left a very bitter taste in my mouth, so much so, that I most likely will not go back. We arrived around 9am on a Friday morning and was seated at a table in the back, this was my choice. We were served coffee promptly (the guy that was pouring the coffee was most polite and was very nice). Our waitress took our order around 9:10. We ordered the biscuit special & bacon & eggs. We waited and waited for our food to arrive and finally at about 9:45 we got served. The biscuit special arrived cold and we had to catch our waitress attention to send it back. She did offer to make a new plate but after waiting 30 mins for the first plate we did not want to wait another 30 mins. Strike One. After she took that plate back, we noticed a hair on the bacon & egg plate. So gross. Strike Two. When our waitress returned we gave her back the bacon & eggs. The manager followed the waitress and greeted us with an attitude when she said she was not going to charge us. I wanted to explain to her that I had previously eaten here with no issues and was disappointed today, but she jumped down my throat and accused me of yelling at her. In no way did I even raise my voice and when I said that to her she stated that she was not charging us and she was not going to give us money. I'm not certain why she said that last part and again when I tried to explain my disappointment, she said something to the effect of why don't I just stand here and have you yell at me. This place is OK. Nothing really special, but it works as a little cafe that caters to the locals. The food is typical of diners, and it is cheap and filling. I ordered the Eggs Benedict, and it came with some strange tasting Hollandaise sauce, which I usually like, but not at this place. All I know is that while it was unique, it didn't taste fresh. The portion size was wonderful, and I hear that the pancakes are excellent. However, I received day-old cinnamon roll, still cold, not freshly baked as advertised. I received only one of the two tortillas, which happened to be dried out and inedible. I didn't actually order any food, but was so impressed with their kindness that it prompted me to leave this review. I was waiting for a car repair and thought it was a good place to hang out . I only ordered a cup of black coffee. They let me sit and sip, stopped by a few times to see if I needed a refill. When I went to pay, they simply said , No, it's ok- there's no charge. Perhaps they knew that car repairs are always hundreds of dollars and they could brighten my day with that cup of coffee. Jesus in action.
