Oh man this is one of our favorite spots to go when we are in Bend! A Brewery that does not disappoint and offers beer and food for everyone. The Brewery has both inside and outside seating, a huge grass lawn and picnic tables and is just a hands down great place to go and sip a beer and talk with friends. Ok ok ok. The beer here is really well made and tastes delicious. BUT the service is lacking. On my first visit I ask the bartender how this all works since there were several signs and directionals and where to go/how to order was a bit confusing. The bartender was pretty condescending in answering my question. And this is BEND for goodness sake- where EVERYONE is super helpful, happy and nice. So what'd this guy's deal? He definitely didn't sour our experience- yet - when we asked him about certain beers he totally had no time for us. If you love beer, you want to talk about beer. So, beer is always good, and up until today I thought this was a great venue for families ( me having a 4 and 2 year old). Not "good, what about you?". Not "good, how can I help you?". Not "good, thanks for coming in today". The bartender person never got better or accepted the kindness myself or girlfriend showed him. The taco truck outside is absolutely fantastic and the workers were super cool and enjoyable to talk to. This is the outside brewery area of dreams. Even in non-covid times, this would be such an incredibly pleasant place to hang out. I love what they've done with the CRUX sign in the firepit as well, and the fact that they always bring in more than one food truck to get those beer snacks on along with selling their own deliciously fresh baked pretzel is A+ in my book. I loved this place so much we came back twice with the doggo. The great thing is that they are SO dog friendly they even provide an area for doggy relief AND bags! A brewery! Has doggo bags! my heart! Okay let's talk about their beers though. Super solid line up, I particularly love their sours as most places try to do a variety so they don't do too well on the beer front, but this place has a great selection. They are also pretty solid on the hazy IPA front. While it's not everyone's thing, I love hazy IPAs. So to sum it up, great environment, great outdoor area, fantastic food and great beers. The beers here are good and they have a grassy area to bring your kids, dogs and beers. They also have a few food trucks in the garden, which look to be permanent which is very convenient. Now that I've got the niceties out of the way, what I experienced at Crux today was very disappointing. The gentleman at the front managed to spill beer all over my shirt, pants and shoes. This clearly was an honest mistake and i don't fault him for that. It's the fact that he didn't do anything about it except to offer me the beer soaked beer rag that he first used to clean the counter with. I politely refused since it wouldn't do any good, paid for my beers and retreated to the beer garden. After thinking about it more and basking in my newly soaked clothes, I returned to the counter and asked to speak to a manager. John greeted me and offered me his apologies and ultimately made it right. I just wish the management team empowered their team to do the same. The beers are clearly 5-star worthy, while the service is a 3 at best once management gets involved. My 4 star review is generous at this time, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here. read more

Came here to hangout and so glad we did! The brewery isn't in the heart of the town which was kind of nice. There was a lot of seating indoors and outdoors. At times it almost seemed like a dog and baby park (all contained of course) because there were so many! The brewery had cornhole and 1-2 food trucks on site. It was a great atmosphere! The parking was alright. It was pretty crowded so took us a while to find a spot but it didn't take long. Parking is free as well. Oh! And the beer! The beer was delish! read more

I really wish we lived in Bend so we could come to this place all the time. The 2 beers I had were some of the best I have ever had and everyone in my group enjoyed their food as well. Crux is my family's favorite place to eat and visit when visiting Bend. The food has always been terrific, service is friendly, and the vibe is laid-back. We love the outdoor grassy area with the food carts and games. However, today's visit was a bit different. We haven't been here for a year. First, the main road leading to Crux has been closed off and that is where most customers park if you can't find us a spot in Crux's small parking lot. I'm not sure why the road has been closed but parking was definitely a challenge. Also, access to Crux was tricky due to this road closure as I had to find another way to get there. Not impossible, but not as straightforward. Second, my favorite food cart is no longer there. There was a Hawaiian cart that served delicious meats with rice and macaroni salad. Instead we had tacos from a taco cart that were decent but nothing to write home about. Third, Crux is doing some major construction and there was a lot of workers there. The outside bar was also closed possibly due to construction. We will still return and be loyal customers to Crux. With the road closure I worry though if that will hurt their business. Crux saw the business opportunity, fostered by the popularity of its beer, to give the people what they want and to make money doing it. Even though there was a long line of people waiting to be served, for both food and beer, every stage of the transaction process was correctly aligned and positioned with MBA style efficiency. Everyone quickly paid, grabbed their food and drink, then moved along to sit at one of the many indoor tables or outside, where food trucks served customers and play areas occupied the kids. I hate to criticize Crux because Bendites obviously love this brewery and it appears to be on the Bend brewery trail, but its commercial success has lead to a diminished spirit and lack of individualistic style that I like to see in breweries. While we relaxed outside, my wife pointed out a unique trait in Bend dog owners: the tendency to carry their dog like a baby. Coming from the Midwest, I can see the need to lift a dog because it was hurt or was misbehaving. However, many Bend dog owners were carrying their dogs on their hip or in a manner that informed the world that the dog was there for the long haul. It was as if the dog needed consoling and constant affection from their owners, otherwise the dog would start crying. After my wife mentioned this, I looked at the dog owners standing around the fire, drinking beer and having a good time, and counted five separate dog carriers. We noticed that one of the Crux dog carriers was also at a previous restaurant and they were still carrying the dog, as if the dog was taking a tour of Bend and never had to use its legs. The frosting on the cake was at the end our evening at Crux. We had moved to the parking lot to finish our beers, a quieter area away from the tennis balls and footballs hurled through the air by the 12 year old boys. A grown man walked around the corner of the building carrying his grown 100 pound golden retriever in his arms. The man walked in a slouch, sagging under the weight of his massive dog, as the retriever hugged the man around his neck, one paw on either side of the head. It was the same technique a mother would use to burp her child. The man walked to his car, opened the door, and placed the retriever in the seat with the ease of a man who does this every weekend. Nice new brewery in the area. Great GREAT location for the view of the mountains while close to downtown. The beers are spot on but the food is limited on our lunch visit. One food truck was open and only pizzas available. Anyway we came for the beer so that was great to drink and super cold and nice. I won't try to rate the place on the quality of its beers. I had the lager and a marzen and both were delicious. But there are people that hater lagers and actually try to convince me that IPA's are good. That's a lie, fake news. So instead let me rate based on service; that part was pretty awesome. The beertenders acknowledged us quickly, made recommendations, asked what our flavor preference was, and really tried to match our personality with one of their great beers. Basically you really can't go wrong; you'll find something you like. (Money back guarantee?) The food looked dope too. The guy next to me ordered a grilled cheese; I can't attest to the taste, but he was moaning while eating it so I assume it was good. They've got a taco truck outside too that's whipping out some mean dishes. Speaking of outside, there's a huge space on the side that caters to all your cornhole and easy outdoor living desires. The weather was nice so the area was pretty packed, and they've got a beertender out there so you don't have to constantly walk back inside. Let's get this out of the way before moving on: These people need more restrooms. Looks like they only have two single-stall, gender neutral loos. Sitting at the last high top in the back, with a just moderate crowd of beer drinkers in the house, there was never a time when I didn't see someone standing in line, often several people, sometimes more than several. Second visit, less so but still people waiting in line. I don't know if there are restrooms outside, but inside there's an issue. Seriously, you've got the real estate - add some restrooms. OK, moving on. Beer: solid examples of porter. The Experimental might be my favorite of the two. I was a little wary because 'experimental' doesn't give me warm fuzzies - like they're still trying to get it right. No, they have. Their IPAs are also quite solid. I look forward to delving deeper into the beer list. Food: - Reuben is tasty. Their version seems like a hybrid grilled cheese and Philly cheese-steak with a dash of Reuben. Kinda greasy but good. - Wings are well seasoned and very well done, almost chicken jerky. Second try: less jerky-like but still awesome. Third, even less so. I conclude their wing preparation is inconsistent. - Root vegetables are a good side. The vegetables are cooked to death, which may or may not be how you like them. I do. - Carrot/zucchini/mozzarella side is interesting. I might dress it differently to make it less acidic. They mix up the lot as a batch every day, so you can't order 'dressing on the side.' - Farmhouse salad is great if you like beets, which I do. - Brutus salad, billed as vegan, is a disappointment bordering on a ripoff. Basically just chopped romaine for $12. Crux has perhaps the most interesting space of all the brewpubs I've been to here in Bend. Fair weather or foul, you'll probably find a good seat to quaff beer. Haven't tried the food trucks yet - that's another interesting thing with Crux. Sure, lots of places without serious kitchens have food trucks, but Crux does have a kitchen and still they integrate the three trucks into their business better than most. That said, I'd like to order that food from inside. Especially if you're solo and have stuff with you (laptop, etc), leaving your seat to get food might not be something you want to do. Mauna Kea food truck is no longer at Crux, by the way. Good service. Good WiFi with multiple public networks, inside and out. In a town with a lot of brewpub options, Crux stands out. read more

Great beer, even better food. We came here for lunch on a beautiful sunny day. Ordered at the counter then grabbed a bench outside. The beer was ready right after we were done ordering. I went with a 6 beer taster. My favorites were the Bubble Wrap IPA and Bendliner sour. For food we ordered the Ultimate Cheesesteak and Caesar salad. I was shocked at how good the cheesesteak was. One of the best I've ever had and probably the best food I've ever had from a brewery/bar. Delicious roll with steak, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and I think two different cheeses. It seemed like a classic provolone along with a beer cheese sauce. If calories didn't exist I could eat this every day. The chips and pickle went great with the cheesesteak. The Caesar had the best croutons I've ever had on a salad. They were focaccia bread croutons which I've never had before. Whatever Crux is doing with their bread products, they're doing it right! Came here on a Saturday night in May after a day trip in Bend (Smith Rock, hit up a bunch of breweries, etc.) - summer vibes in Bend are so chill. A coworker recommended it and I was extremely satisfied with my overall experience. Right now, there's a bunch of construction going on kind of right before you reach the front of the brewery, so you might have to park in the overflow lot and walk in (it says road closed, super annoying, even though they don't have construction on Saturdays). If you want to park in the regular lot closest to the entrance, you have to get back on the freeway and kind of go back around (not the end of the world though, both options are fine). It was pretty poppin' around 5pm on a Saturday night - tons of people eating, drinking, chilling with their dogs. Decent outdoor area for people to sit and hang out, and indoor area is pretty big as well. I got the BOURBON PCT PORTER (Barrel-aged day-in & day-out porter) AND IT WAS ALMOST THE BEST DARK BEER I HAVE EVER TASTED. ($10) I don't often drink barrel-aged stuff (mostly because I didn't really see it offered at a lot of the breweries I used to go to in CA), BUT IT IS AMAZING (I'm almost scared I can't go back to just regular Guinness). The bourbon taste wasn't overwhelming, and the beer didn't taste over-alcoholy (you know what I mean...) I haven't had the food served from/inside of Crux, because my friend recommended hitting up the taco truck parked right outside - we got 3 carnitas tacos for $8, and split between 5 people it was the perfect little snack to hold us over before our large dinner that night at Deschutes (we were trying to save ourselves but also kind of hungry). Overall, the vibes and beer were great - my only complaint is that after they served us they didn't check in with us as much as I would have wanted (granted I know it was a busy night). My friend's only complaint is that they didn't have as many dark beers on the menu (I know this happens a lot during sunny summer times, but according to her she usually can count on Crux to still have a lot of darker beers on tap for people who prefer it). Tip for next time - they do serve guests at tables, but it's overall better just at any brewery to pay for your beer at the counter and bring it to a table (we had to wait a while to flag down a server and tell him we wanted to pay, and we were sort of trying to get out of there on time to beat the Deschutes dinner rush). 10/10 would come again though! probably to buy myself a bottle of that bourbon PCT porter... read more
