I'm not sure what it is about craft breweries and beers that bring out the snob in some people. After reading some of the reviews here, that is the only rationale I can come up with to explain the negativity. Seriously people, it's BEER, not dinner with the Queen. The phrase high horse comes to mind. One point I'd like to make first is that Crown Brewing is NOT Carriage Court pizza. Yes, they are connected and you can get the beer at the restaurant and the food in the brewery, but reviewing a brewery based mainly on the food you received is like reviewing a bank branch based on the grocery store in which it is housed. Makes no sense. With that said, I'm a big fan of both Crown Brewing AND Carriage court pizza. I gave Crown 5 stars because I thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere and the beers I've tasted. Carriage court would have to be a separate review though, as it's a separate business. The seating area is cozy and generally quiet, though not boring. I enjoy the small-town atmosphere and the "Cheers"-like feel to the place. My favorite brew is consistently the Crown Brown; my husband's is the Special Forces IPA. Both are regulars on the menu. Their menu has expanded to include at least 6 beers on tap at all times, with seasonal offerings as well. The blueberry is very popular in the summer months -- it is light and fruity and has a strong blueberry flavor.....apparently it's popular enough that it is now a year-round offering. Last month they had 12 total available brews. During our last visit there the bartender was very attentive without being annoying. She handled our food order seamlessly, no staff from the restaurant was needed, so that might be why there are a lot fewer issues with food service. I believe in the past they would have had to get a waitress from the restaurant to come in and handle the food ordering and delivery and table-waiting, but now it seems the bartenders handle it all, which makes for better, more attentive service. Give them a try, I think you'll be pleased. Just make sure you keep perspective in the back of your mind and your nose out of the air ;) read more

The first thing you need to understand about going here is that the bar and the restaurant are SEPARATE ENTITIES. The restaurant is Carriage Court Pizza, highly mundane, pricey, and with a religious bent. The last item is not just my opinion; they host theological discussions here (together with Crown Brewing). Also Crown Brewing HATES and DETESTS all things California, and ESPECIALLY the L.A. Lakers, to the point of printing same on their beer growlers. I did not know this at first, and once I was watching the playoff game , and I couldn't understand why the bartender was so unbelievably rude. Anyway, to enter Crown Brewing directly without going through the restaurant, you go through their own designated door on the side through the outdoor seating area. It is small, and the bar is tiny, with literally about 4 chairs. The beer is above average for a beerpub, but so is their pricing. There is one fairly large screen t.v. You can look through the window at the back to see some of their brewing equipment. Basically, no atmosphere, so you better bring your own. read more

Great beer. Terrible service. I don't know if Dawn was having a bad day, but we had to wait a while for everything, which was okay until we had to wait 10+ minutes for her to bring the wrong beer and then didn't see her again for 30 minutes even after we told another staff member that we were ready to close out. The rest of the staff seemed really nice and attentive to their customers, so we will give it a second chance and hope we get a different waiter. read more

I think Crown Brewing is a great little brew pub. The tasting room is small but the beer is excellent. I especially like the specialty beers when they have them. The food comes from the pizza place next door and I like the pizza and wings. The beer prices are fair and they have specials Monday, Wed & Thurs. I joined the mug club and will make it a regular stop. read more

Beer is good, but not as good as the other craft brew pubs in NW Indiana. Love the Special Forces IPA, but they seem to run out of it a lot. Food at the restaurant (Carriage Court) is mediocre at best. Tasted like Pizza Hut pizza. Too cheesy also. read more

Mixed feelings: the beer selection is outstanding and most tasted as outstanding as they sounded. We went to 3 more breweries including Three Floyds after that and all agreed Crown had the best beer. The Java porter is one of the best coffee beers I've tasted, although I didn't taste much maple pecan, the current rotation. The black pumpkin was the perfect fall beer, full of flavor. However, the Oktoberfest smelled and tasted funky, something was definitely wrong with it but the bartender didn't seem to be concerned. Probably because she was the only person taking orders for food, drinks, pouring beer, filling growlers, etc. No help from the attached pizza place or anyone else at the brewery. It took about 40 minutes for the 5 of us to get our flights, partly because the place was understaffed but then she kept pouring pints and filling growlers for other customers instead of just knocking ours out at once. The pizza was delicious at least, just wish they'd have come over to help out the brewery. Bottom line: I will definitely stop in for a growler fill any time I'm nearby, but would probably not stay to eat and hang out. read more

Based on other very fine Northern Indiana breweries, this place just doesn't live up to standards of other micro - breweries. In their defense, nothing really wrong with their beers. Not to the caliber of Three Floyd's or Hunters Brewing, but not bad. However, the food would be a negative 5. Ordered the breaded mushrooms and we got 5 mushrooms for $5 (these were small mushrooms too) We waited 50 minutes for our food, and my wife ordered a rare hamburger with NO mayonnaise and extra onions. After 50 minutes, she got a McDonald's burnt hockey puck hamburger with mayonnaise and no onions. I never did get my meal by the time we left. They had only three occupied tables! Go for the beer but pass on the food, it's really not worth spending money on. read more

I have to say that I have heard a lot of good things about Crown Brewing from friends. I was quite disappointed with the food menu selection for a brew pub and really let down by the quality of the food. I expect better from a brew pub. The beer is quite good I must say and the seating outside is great. Those two things added another star on to my review. Overall this place is good for beer not so much for food. It does have a lot of potential if they can get the food situation figured out. I will be waiting for that to happen. read more

Carriage court pizza is attached to Crown Brewing. The inside and outside atmosphere is nice. I went to the restaurant and was disappointed. Ordered the beer battered mushroom appetizers and they were not good. Did not bother to order anything else after that. 4 stars for atmosphere and outside beer garden for Crown Brewing. 2 stars for the restaurant food. I understand they are two separate businesses but that is where the food comes from if you want to have something to eat while tasting the beers. read more

I love Crown Brewing. I'm a huge fan of their Blueberry ale, it's not to sweet and just the perfect mixture of beer and hint of blueberry. My friends and I have been their repeatedly for their pizza and wings. The prices are excellent, I don't feel like I leave there broke. Great place! I go here often. One of the most important things when it comes to this place is remember, CROWN DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FOOD! Went to Crown to get a few beers and pizza tonight.The bar fills up early so getting tables can be somewhat of a waiting game . In the past the bar has always been You snooze you loose kind of situation. We were just about to set at a table that was coming available. One of the bartenders came over to me and told me that a group was waiting on a table for 45 minutes and they were getting that table. I asked if they had reserved tables now and got no response . Very disappointed. I just left there for my Birthday. I had one flight of 4 Oz beers and two regular size beers in glasses. The manager cut me off because the beer in the flight had high alcohol content. She wouldn't come and talk to me herself when I asked to speak with her, she just went ahead and tabbed me out and had the waitress bring it to me. She stood on the stairs and watched me until I went to grab a third beer and then she had my tab waiting for me. Very unprofessional and ridiculous, I was not drunk or unruly. Anyone who has been to Crown Point Brewery and did not enjoy their selection IPA's and crafts knows nothing of beer. This is an amazing place with an interesting history in an awesome little town.They do not serve food here so the posts of not enjoying themselves because of it are ignorance. The food comes from the place next door, and the employees of the brewery are actually doing you a courtesy by ordering and bringing it to you. I had the pizza which was a good selection that complemented their crafts. They are two different establishments, not affiliated, only joined. I actually arrived before opening time and the bartender allowed me to sit and enjoy a beer, listen to her Pandora choices, and relax while she went about her duties. I highly recommend a return trip and a tour of the brewery. read more

I have never been to Crown Brewing but thought I would give it a try today. The beer I had today was the Brown Crown and it was delicious. I would order it everyday. The wait staff was also very friendly and courteous. However, I did not know until reading the reviews after the fact that the food is not from this place. It makes perfect sense though. The food was horrible and if I were the owners of the brewery, I would dissociate myself from this food as soon as possible. It cannot help their business model. My party tried the appetizers to go with the beers and they were disgusting. They tasted like they came out of a box just prior and were most likely microwaved. I don't know, perhaps the pizza is ok. However, I would only recommend ordering the beer here. It really was wonderful. Get rid of the food and I would gladly give five stars. It doesn't matter that it comes from a different place; it's being served with the beer here....... read more

Hello David Hunter, It's Darren. I in no way was condescending to you that night, I never made fun of you and I treat my patrons with respect (if anything I make fun of myself each and every night). I simply asked you why you did not clean your growler. Your growler still had 2 inches of beer in it and the growler and cap were encrusted with mold. No bartender would ever fill that growler with beer. Another patron told you to take it to the restroom to clean it, not me. It would have taken 10+ minutes in order to properly clean and sanitize your growler. On a busy Friday night that is not a possibility. This is why all the bartenders politely ask the customers to immediately rinse out and clean their growlers when they are empty. Do you want us to turn into FFF, where you have to buy a new growler ever time? I don't, so please respect your beer and clean the growler. Dawn was a table away that night, if you were unhappy with my service why didn't you turn to her? Dawn does a great job at the brewery and so does Kaitlyn. So David, instead of calling me names (neanderthal), calling Dawn, and calling my boss, why don't you just come in and talk to me. I NEVER once put you down, you were just mad because I wanted you to pay $4 extra for a new glass. read more

Upon entering I quickly found out that Crown Brewing and the pizza place are two businesses sharing one location. The bar/ tasting room is much smaller than I thought it would be, however it does have somewhat of a cozy atmosphere. I was referred to this place by one of my many craft beer friends and decided to make the trip out after finding out about the pint night ride. Being somewhat of an avid biker I could think of no better excuse to enjoy a ride and a free beer, just for going on the ride. One of the reasons that I enjoyed Crown so much is that there are no pretensions, nor is there a sense of arrogance that commonly plague some other microbreweries. The beer is on the whole, very good. The IPA is very well balanced and seems to be more true to the style than most other micros. The brown is world class, and VERY much a session beer. On the down side it was very busy and the small size of the place fills up quickly. This was kind of annoying at one point because of the line, but then again it was a special night and I had to ride my bike back which restrained consumption by me. Luckily the weather was good enough to be on the patio which was very pleasant. Since that night I have been back one other time. This time it was a lot less crowded but I didn't get a free beer. The bartender was much more personable rather than frantic compared to the last time I saw him and the atmosphere was much more relaxed. I had a glass of the bourbon cherry dunkelweizenbock ... I think that's what it was. Needless to say it was really surprising in a good way. I am really happy to have found this place and have since adopted it as my oasis of beer. If you like amazing beer without being bombarded with idiocy then you will like Crown. read more

I used to come here all the time back in the good old days when Chris was the manager and Kaitlyn and Darrin and Dawn were bartenders. I moved out of the area for a while but recently moved back. The beer is still good as ever but the atmosphere and the employees are the worst. None of the bartenders know the beer, you work for a brewery, know the beer! I blame this on the owners and manager. They must hire their friends because there is no excuse to hire people that don't know anything about beer nowadays. The bar manager is a complete and utter b****! She will run around with her head cut off and bark orders at everyone, if you don't know what you want right away she will get mad then not come back for 10 minutes. I just think that the owners/upper management must be completely blind to the customer service end of a brewery. Things changed drastically since the last time I've been here and it's not for the better. Hopefully the soon to be new brewery in CP will put them out of business. I'm not commenting on the food because I know they are a seperate business. read more
