A great find on the way back to Las Vegas from Death Valley National Park. Good food and good service at reasonable prices.

I have been here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Haven't used the bar much. Breakfasts are good, especially when leaning toward U.S. comfort food, but don't be afraid to try the Mexican options. Hot coffee seals the deal. Lunch: If you somehow don't think the lunches here are good, you haven't been in the desert long enough. Get out there, hike around, bring an appetite (and lose the attitude). Dinner: Just the other night had great nachos, with olives and home-made tortilla chips, and a surprisingly tasty house red to go with my trout on rice. I could drive another 50 miles north and get a "cafe" that's mostly vending machines, or I could drive 80 miles south and get a strip of fast-food options, Denny's, and the Mad Greek (which isn't bad), or I could come here and get a solid and tasty square meal. Ummm, which one will I pick? The service: Always friendly, local, helpful, cheerful. Hard to believe they can get food this fresh way out here in the desert, but somehow they do it, and they make it look effortless. I have eaten indoors and outdoors. Indoors is fine, nothing fancy but comfortable. But I really enjoy the outdoors, either the tables in front or the little open-air patio to the side. Watch for mosquitoes in the early evening, but the warm breeze is refreshing, and the sunsets are to die for. Don't miss the museum next door, with not just old farm tractors but a surprisingly literate collection of prehistoric and modern natural history, from mastodons and Pangea-era camels to the lizards and pupfish that are here today. The place is amazing!!! Steve makes the best Reuben sandwich and Patty Melt we ever had!!! The server is very nice too. It's definitely worth the stop on or from Death Valley or even from Baker. There's a nice museum next door with lots of town history. The prices are a little high but so worth it! read more

I have been to the Crowbar many, many times and every time has been more than great. The prices are very fair, despite its remote location (remember, you have to drive 30+ miles for supplies) and the staff are always amazing and very attentive to the customers even when it is busy. There's really not many places to eat in the area (Shoshone has this place, Death Valley Junction [30 miles away] has a place, Tecopa [5-8 miles] has a place or two depending on the time, and that's about it. The Crowbar has great wraps, a very good veggie burger, home made fries, awesome iced tea, and awesome rattlesnake chili. And that isn't even delving into the rest of the great menu! My wife and I came out to the Shoshone area for the day from Vegas to do some Geocaching. We found this place around lunch time so decided to give it a shot....not that there was any competition around. LOL A pretty cool place though that fits well with the mining history of the town. Great historical story of the founder and area on the menu. They had a decent lunch crowd that spilled over from the diner side to the saloon side of the place but there was only one waitress to take orders and serve everyone in the whole place. Because of that, service was a bit slow but very understandable. She did a great job to make the best of it and was friendly and efficient. The food was very good and plentiful. Looks like they have stage area for shows outside in the nicer weather but since it was only 33F outside when we were there, not much going on out there in January. If you're in the area and not it a hutty, I definitely recommend making the stop and having a bite here. Check out Dublin Gultch across the street too when you're done....it's a centuty old abandoned mining village with caves carved out of the rock-like volcanic ash that is dominant in the area. You wouldn't think a cafe in the middle of nowhere would be something to write about, but this place is clean, cheery, good service, delicious hot meals and fresh greens you won't find if you're headed to Death Valley, served efficiently without a long wait. Call me crazy but after finding this place driving home from a trip from Death Valley 5 years ago, every few months we will get out of Vegas and take a trip to this Cafe for lunch and to play the lottery. The best thing you can order are their tortilla chips with the salsa. SOO crunchy and delicious. Then I normally get a burger and the hand cut fries. Can't really disappoint you there. The only downside of this place really is the flies that make their way inside and the restrooms outside around the back are little fair to partly cloudy looking. Could improve the restrooms and maybe revamp the cafe a little more. read more

We drove a long way in the Death Valley and this is the only restaurant we found outside the park. We ordered Beef Fajitas and It's surprisingly good. The waitress was nice and the preparation was quick. Would recommend this place if you travel over here. read more

This place is a gem in the middle of nowhere. The food is excellent and the staff is very friendly. Everything seems fresh and comes out steaming hot. This is our second visit and we are equally impressed this time. We had the club burger w fresh avocados. Everything perfect and very tasty. We also had the Miners Choice which was like a very tasty philly cheese steak sandwich. Excellent. We highly recommend this highly unlikely place in Shoshone (pop 32). read more

What a hidden gem! We went here on July 24th after a day of rock crawling in our Jeep. We checked into the motel across the street around 7:00, and after unloading, we went to the cafe. We were the only ones there, but what a great dinner! We worried that we would be rushed out the door, but Nicki, the server, and Steve the chef, made us feel right at home! We had a glass of Apothic Inferno, and wandered around looking at the vintage photos and decor while Steve prepared a great patty melt for me and a chili size for my partner. The food and drink were prepared perfectly, and it set up a wonderfully relaxing meal. Nicki was so very hospitable, and she chatted with us, not once rushing us to leave. We do not hesitate to recommend the Crowbar Cafe to anyone looking for a nice meal. Their menu is surprisingly diverse, and their bar is well-stocked. You will not be disappointed. The ONLY reason I am giving this place two stars is for their excellent attentive service. This is the only reason. I was out trekking alone in the desert before meeting up with some friends in Vegas and I was hungry for some breakfast. I was really hoping to try Cafe C'est Si Bon, but they were closed! Crowbar looked interesting enough from the outside. I thought, "How bad could it be?" So, I thought I'd give it a try. BAD mistake. I walked in and noticed the strong cigarette smell in the air. I sat down at the counter. As soon as I did, a very friendly waitress came over to take my order. Through out my time at this restaurant, she came over to check up on me. I ordered tea, pancakes and eggs. This was all I ordered. The eggs were very dry and I could tell they were from a mix. The pancakes were very rubbery (they over beat the mix) and had a strange grainy texture and left a strange sensation on the roof of my mouth. They didn't have real butter, it was that tub-o-crock-stuff. And since I knew this place would not have real maple syrup, I asked for honey. They gave me honey packets. I never tasted such bad honey in my life! I'm usually polite and eat the food, even if it's bad. But this was pretty bad, and only ate half of my plate. The tea was okay. A Rustic Restaurant with a Bar located 20+ miles from nowhere that gets the job done. Obviously there's not a lot of options for food close by in this neck of the woods, so if your Belly's growling or if you desperately start to feel the need of a cold Beer or Cocktail or just want to take a break from a long, hot drive then this is the Spot for you. I live at the next Town 20 miles or so up the road (in Nevada) Thank God! I do stop in on a regular basis to get a bite of their truly excellent Breakfast Sausages or Rattlesnake Chili, but more likely a cold draft Beer in the Saloon, Speaking of their "Saloon"...it's a fun place to hang out and relax and meet interesting Travelers from all over the World or even some Loco Locals. Yes, I include myself in that description. /grin I've met people from France, Germany, Italy and Russia just to name a few...all wanting to get their Wild West / Death Valley experience on. The food itself is not spectacularly good or bad, it's kind of in the middle and slightly more expensive, which makes perfect understandable sense due to its remote Desert location (food has to be trucked in) and it has a semi large diverse menu to satisfy most picky eaters. If for nothing else stop in to just get the feel of this place, it has a long and proud history...feeding hungry locals and travelers for decades on end and it's a decent watering hole for those seeking friendly faces to have a drink with. This little place is quaint & quirky, and I really enjoyed breakfast here this morning. The meal was good, served with the best decaf coffee I've had in ages. I've been here twice now in the past month. Great hidden gem in the small pit stop town of Shoshone with a great history. If you have time check out the museum next door. Half way between Pahrump NV and Death Valley a great place to stop and grab a bite. Large portions decent menu and prices. It can be busy and with a minimal staff be prepared to wait a bit for food on a weekend. Check out the bar rail as well it's an old train track. Staff is super friendly. Food is great. Happened upon this excellent establishment after getting a flat tire on my way home to Las Vegas after spending the day in tecopa. My car was in the middle of the desert at night with one flat and one unusable spare. My boyfriend and I went into Shoshone in his car looking for at least cell service, and saw the welcoming sign for the Crowbar Cafe and decided to head in for a drink to calm our nerves. Jen was bar tending, and upon finding out our unfortunate circumstances she was so incredibly helpful and offered to help us out after serving us some much needed shots, her and her husband ended up helping us get back on the road again. So appreciative and we will absolutely be back when we are in the area again! read more

Better than expected! I usually eat at Pastel's (AWESOME) Bistro in nearby Tecopa...but they were closed, so I tried this place. It looks like a typical tourist trap saloon, with the Old West shtick laid on super-thick...so I didn't expect much; bar-type junk food, which it kinda was. Burgers, nachos, etc...but less greasy and better prepared than expected. I had a veggie burger and fries, and the fries were pretty limp and greasy...but the burger was great! On another visit I had a chicken Caesar, and it was pretty good. Lots of fresh greens and a decent amount of chicken. The bloody Mary was also basic, but fine. Service was good, ambiance was fine, and there is free Wi-Fi. I would probably come here again...but to be honest, only for drinks/ Wi-Fi...or if Pastel's is closed (which it often is). read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!! I actually came here about a year ago, but never did a review. I have to commend this place for making it a nice place to stop into, despite being in one of the world's smallest and most obscure towns. My mom had a doctor's appointment here one morning, so while she was occupied with that, I decided to take a stroll. I walked in, and it was DEAD. There might have been one other person besides me. But the waitress was still cheerful and let me sit in the bar area even though it technically wasn't open yet. When I asked her for a beer (yeah, I will drink beer in the morning. Don't judge me), she said that it was against the law there to order alcohol that early. I sighed, crestfallen. It was what she did next that was soooooo frickin' awesome. She looks around, then whispers, "Well, there is only one sheriff in this town, and I know he's over gettin' coffee right now. He should be occupied for a good hour, so I'll get you one. Just keep a look out for him." HELL. YES. Then on top of it, she suggested "Why don't I get you a little can of tomato juice to go with it? A beer with tomato juice is good in the morning." And by golly, the woman knew what she was talking about! As I happily sipped away, we chatted about the town, her son (who was serving in the military, bless his heart) and a bunch of other things. She had lots of personality, which was really refreshing. All in all, a great experience. I for sure will come back the next time I take a trip to Death Valley :) Also, the name alone combined with the old-timey "Wild Wild West" motif inside certainly made my day. read more

Ate lunch here yesterday. When we walked in and said "hello" the waitress just kind of grunted in our general direction. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars is because the french fries were actually good. I got the enchiladas and my husband got a burger. Enchiladas were filled with gross ground beef (maybe hamburger helper?). If you like Taco Bell, this place is for you. Enchiladas were made from flour tortillas. They weren't baked or anything. Probably just microwaved to melt the cheese. Burger was okay... just a prepackaged overcooked burger patty from the grocery store. We got a small cup of the rattlesnake chili and it was okay, not great. The food just seemed lazy and sloppy. Our waitress, despite our politeness, seemed to think that doing her job was a great favor to us. We tipped her well because it was New Year's Eve. We had a couple of well drinks at $4 each. They were weak. Bathroom is outside and the toilet doesn't flush all that well. Stop here if you must, but don't expect great food. read more

I was the First Reviewer six years ago, and wanted to stop again on way back to Las Vegas from DV. Better than ever. Fancied up, friendly staff, lots of great beers. For a late lunch we had the soup of the day, bean and ham. Really good. And the chicken quesadilla. Superb, tasty, with salad and salsa. Definitely a hit. And super cheap after leaving Furnace Creek. The Crowbar feature hand crafted food which makes sense because it is in the middle of nowhere. I expected a lot of hand crafted food with the help of frozen and canned foods; I was wrong. I had a taco salad and the Husband had a chicken breast sandwich which were both delicious. Our friendly waitress was watching as we took those first bites. She knew we would be happy with our choices. My salad had mixed greens not iceberg lettuce and fresh cooked taco shell bowl; the salsa was homemade a delicious. We love to eat breakfast here and have for the past 28 years we have lived in Pahrump, Nevada, just 27 miles away. Our favorite is the California Omelet with Jake's homemade salsa and sour cream and avocados. Recently, they have completely modernized and upgraded the restrooms, which was much appreciated! The trip wouldn't be complete without buying lotto tickets across the Highway at the store and buying some China Date Ranch cookies or bread. Shoshone, CA is in the middle of a fairly popular motorcycle ride from Las Vegas, NV. Given the distance, we arrive there about 90 minutes after the start of the ride, a perfect time to break from the saddle. The Crowbar Cafe was full of other riders that had started out earlier; the waitress warned us that we were in line behind the previous crowd and the food would take some 30 minutes to prepare. So we ordered some chips and salsa while we waited. GET IN YOUR CAR, GET ON YOUR BIKE, CLIMB IN YOUR PLANE AND GO TO THE CROW BAR RIGHT NOW! The homemade chips and salsa was the best I've ever had, my club sandwich was spectacular and the break from the ride was welcome. The location is really fun and only a hop and skip from Death Valley proper. The bill for seven people was exactly $100. Yay! I'm a fan. Finally, we bought lotto tickets at the Chevron across the street. If I win I am going to buy Yelp. read more

I stopped in after a long long hike in Death Valley. As others have said it has a very small town feeling to it. Food was fine. I had some chili and their chips and salsa (they actually made homemade fried chips) which was good enough. My warm apple pie and ice cream desert was wonderful. If this place wasn't 100 miles from the nearest city... it would get 3* but since it is in the middle of no where.. they get 4*. I'm sure Ill be back here in the future. read more
