After a friend and I hiked at China Ranch and had a date shake there, we drove to Shoshone to have lunch. I had been at the Crowbar once before, many years ago--a stop for coffee that my wife needed. She was have caffeine withdrawal. There are two sections to the Crowbar. One side seems to be the bar area. We went in the area that was the café. Our server told us to sit where we wanted and we sat at the last table toward the kitchen. She dropped off menus and took our drink orders. Both of us ordered the club sandwich which was served on a croissant instead of three slices of bread. We also had a choice of side--fries, potato salad, or cole slaw. There was a bit of a wait but it was worth it. The croissant was filled with ham, turkey, cheese, and lettuce and tomato. There was a large amount of fries with the sandwich. My iced tea was refilled and my friend asked for some hot water and it was brought immediately. When the server asked if she could bring us anything else, I said, "Yes, the internet." She said, "Just one moment. I'll get it for you." In this area near the southern area of Death Valley, there is no cell service--nothing! She brought a slip of paper with the password for the wifi of the Shoshone Museum next door. Bingo! She brought me the internet. It was a good signal and I could catch up on the world away from Shoshone. Great service from our server!! I really like this café and saloon. It's rustic, the food is good, and the price is right. I wouldn't hesitate to stop here again! read more

Crowbar is the only place to eat inShoshone, but we don't need a second place because crowbar is perfect. The food is great. The staff are always pleasant to deal with the atmosphere is congenial. Everything is clean ... What's not like? TheMiners mainstay, a variation on the Philly cheesesteak is a great sandwich and they have several other great dishes as well. 10/10 recommend! read more

The crowbar is one of my favorite rural restaurants. Great place to stop whether you're driving or flying into Shoshone.

Death Valley is a desert in most respects. Food and accomodations are just a few of the other types of desert found here. There used to be a place in Tecopa that served great food but the couple who ran it left. Walking into this oasis after a long a grueling day in the heat, with tongue hanging out and dragging on the dusty floor we were promptly seated. We were told half of the menu was not available so we had to crowbar out of whatever the chef would make for us. Well we were grateful for what we got since we could not get to Victorville in time for dinner. There was sluggish WiFi and good toilet facilities here. Woohoo, time for some recovery on the withdrawal symptoms due to lack of Face-booking and Yelping. Remember Death Valley is also death to all of your social media. A veritable desert of sorts, it claims all that walk on its path. read more

An unexpected surprise! Stopped in the Crowbar expecting generic road food and was I surprised. Cold beer, patty melt and french fries were all excellent. Cold beer...what more can you say. Patty melt...fresh meat, grilled onions and marbled rye. French fries...homemade and cooked to perfection. Poor waitress was maxed out with a full house but always had a smile and kind words. Whenever I'm near the Crowbar I'll make the detour again! read more

We stopped here for brunch as it was one of the first restaurants we could find when heading south out of Death Valley National Park. We weren't sure what to expect from a cafe + saloon (what a combo) in the middle of nowhere but the food was surprisingly pretty good for such a remote spot with a lot of character. Lunch isn't served until 11am, and we arrived at 10:45am, so our options were limited to just the breakfast menu -- fine for me since I love breakfast foods anyway. We both opted for the California Omelette, which was a solid 4/5 stars. Great place to stop by for a bite if you're road tripping through Shoshone. Good food for better prices. read more

Crowbar Cafe - American Near Me - Shoshone, California

Our visit to this town with a population of 13 was last week of Sept.2024. Monday evening to do desert stargazing out away from Las Vegas. The first thing to rave about was the incredibly clean restrooms inside. As if they were brand new which for the most part they were. Had food and beers at the bar which was good. The diner side was unoccupied since it was an odd day. Nice chat with the bartender. Ghost stories abound. Boot Hill gravesite across the street and miscellaneous other wonders for a tiny crossroads semi-ghost town. This was better than The Pioneer Saloon over in the Nevada boonies. Will return someday we hope. read more

Located just outside the southeastern entrance of Death Valley National Park in the tiny community of Shoshone, Crowbar Cafe & Saloon offers delicious food, drink, and lots of friendly service. It's a true piece of Americana, an oasis in the desert, and is as western as a John Wayne movie. I actually paid a visit to this fine diner last year, and I'm only getting around to posting my visit on Yelp. There are two separate sections, the cafe section of the restaurant, as you walk in the front door, and a saloon, co-located under the same roof. The decor is quite plain, and the most noticeable attraction would be the western mural behind the counter. The menu features something for every taste, with a "stick to your ribs" format. I'd classify the cuisine as "western diner," which works well with me. I ordered sausage, hash brown potatoes, eggs and toast. To me, the benchmark of a good breakfast restaurant is how they cook the eggs, when you order them over easy, which is my favorite way to eat eggs. The eggs, fried over easy were cooked perfectly, so I was instantly in love with Crowbar Cafe. I was surprised at the sheer size of the sausages, as they were HUGE! This breakfast was amazing! My friendly server, Sunny, certainly lived up to her name, as she was very pleasant, welcoming, and a nice person. Crowbar Cafe & Saloon is the kind of diner that I love, as it's unique, has lots of personality, serves great food, and the staff is super friendly. It's a small-town diner, where everybody is treated like family. As you drive through the Armagosa Valley on the way to Death Valley National Park, stop by Crowbar Cafe and Saloon for a great meal, and a good time. My breakfast was delicious, the service was fast, friendly and personable, and the rustic, western atmosphere was priceless. I rate this fine restaurant a solid 4 stars. When you're visiting Shoshone, I'd highly recommend a visit to Crowbar Cafe. read more

One week ago I needed gas - gas and a lottery ticket. The PowerBall was up to 1.2 Billion, billion with a B! We were on the border of Nevada after leaving Utah, both states you cannot buy a lottery ticket in. The closest place to fulfill both needs, gas and ticket, was Shoshone, CA. As I filled the tank of the Challenger my wife got in line. I watched the line move, slowly. Only one person was able to get in to buy a ticket and move the line forward in the time it took to fill the tank, an empty tank. I went to find my wife, I found her approximately seventy people back. After a short deliberation I said to her "Let's Go" but I too had to go. Go drain my tank. The line is too long to go at the normal spot for a man and wife on the road. I look across the street and see an oasis. The Crowbar Cafe. I went across the street to ask for relief, it was granted. The nicest person allowed me to use the restroom. Chuckled at me when I asked if the fridge door was the entrance to the restroom. The Crowbar was full. Not as many people as the line across the street but I'm not sure I would have found a seat if I needed one. What else do you need from a restaurant? A fantastic staff and a full restaurant, people wanting to eat at it. If I ever find myself hungry, with time to spare, in Shoshone, CA, I will be eating at the Crowbar Cafe. read more

28/2016 Here is a place out where you would not expect to see a restaurant. There is only a gas station across the street and a motel and a sheriff house and museum! I can only imagine how many people do travel this way to head to Death Valley. So this would make it convenient to stop at.. We have been by here many times when we have taken a ride to Tecopa or just to head for a ride for the day, Someone told us a while back the fries were good well we finally decided to give it a try. When walking in your greeted after a few minutes and your told to sit where ever you want. We went the night before the Powerball was going off and we watched the people come and standing outside across the street, We were surprised the restaurant was not busier. We noticed it was a bit cold inside while sitting looking at our menu's. The prices on everything were a bit higher than some places too, we were kinda hoping to find that hole in the wall gem that we would would go back to especially after reading some of the reviews. We figured we were in a touristy area where there are not too many choices for miles so the prices were higher. We both ordered coffee just to warm up. He ordered the taco salad and I ordered the nachos. And of course a order of the fries we heard that were good. My husband explained to me the taco salad did not have a lot of meat in it but a lot of beans which were kinda mushy. He said it was ok, not the best that he has had. The nachos I had were odd. Big huge chips ( I think fried from flour shells ) with onions, tomatoes, and black olives on top along with which looked like maybe 2 different cheeses. The cheese kind of slid under all of the chips so you had to go to the bottom to put some more on top of them I never had nachos just with these topping usually you have jalapenos, and maybe some meat on top especially when paying almost $10.00. So it was kinda bland I asked for some of their salsa to put on a few times just to give it some more flavor along with the little container of sour cream. Sad to say we are not fans. Even though we were told the chef makes the salsa home made and it is with cactus. It was ok not one of my favorites I have tried. We had higher hopes. Now the fries were homemade. They were good. We ate them first while they were hot. They were soft and not bad at all. Do we think it was worth $5? No. Staff was friendly and kept our coffee's filled. There is no cell phone reception there at all. So I kept trying to check in as we drove away and finally I had service. Do we suggest going here? If you don't mind paying higher prices for food you can get cheaper if you drove to Pahrump and if you do not have high expectations when going. Or order something other than what we had. Or we would suggest if you come from Pahrump/Vegas eat before going out this way!! read more

2 stars for the food, the place looks cool and cute and the staff are cool, but the food.... when asked what the waitress suggests we try as we wanted to share a meal, and weren't too hungry.... she swore the cheese burger was the best! The hubs and I spent the day at Death Valley National Park on an impromptu trip. After we got done there, we were absolutely starving and stumbled upon this little gem in the middle of nowhere. Always on top of refills for your drink or whatever else you might need. We chose to sit outside and it was perfect weather and a great view! Food was hearty and satisfying. We have been going here off and on about ten years. We planned a mini get a way. We stayed the night and always go here for dinner 07 May 2022 around 5 pm we walked across from the motel just to find out they were closed. Only place to eat in town and they were closed. We had to go to Tecopa for dinner at the brewery and it was amazing. Got up this morning went in around 10:50 waitress was busy by the time she could get to us breakfast was over. Or so the cook said it was 11:02 and breakfast ends at 11:00. I ordered lunch vegetable burrito the cook comes out asks why only one order I said my husband wanted breakfast. The cook said well what did he want my husband was over it so didn't order because the cook was being well a dick the waitress was amazing working her ass off and he was being a dick. Sorry to say might be my last visit. read more

excellent food. clean bathrooms. wait staff was super nice. will return. ************+***********************++++

To quote Philip "functional but not stylish". I came with a large group and we ordered a variety of food. Food tasted decent. There was a lot of garlic in the chilli, the rice was undercooked for fajitas, the burger patty was obviously frozen, and to quote someone on the trip "they did not finish microwaving my prime rib". The spelling of the cocktail menu was also amusing: grand mariner, kaluha, teguila, and the captin' Morgan were our favorites. Waitress knew her beer list well and was very pleasant. Service was a 4/5 (some things were forgotten), food was 2.75/5 but definitely edible and tasted alright. By far the best place to eat in town! read more

Surprised by the great reviews. Flies were buzzing around every table. The kitchen is somewhat open and you can see hygiene is not a top priority. The tub of sour cream sitting out on the grungy counter by the milkshake mixer when we arrived was still sitting out when we left. If you're a fan of the TV show Hell's Kitchen then you'll know to avoid this place. Too bad, it's a cool location and could be turned into something really great. It's the only place to eat in this small town. Our server was nice. Food took awhile to prepare but we kept busy checking out the exhibits in front of the museum next door. Burgers were decent. I ordered the nachos as well. They're freshly fried flour chips and quite big compared to store-bought ones. The nachos appeared somewhat bare but they do come with a little container of salsa and sour cream on the side. There wasn't a protein; I would have loved black beans instead of olives. I recommend sitting outside and watching the sunset if you find yourself there during that hour. Also, the mountains behind the restaurant get that nice glow during that time. I didn't partake but they have a decent list of beer and cocktails. read more

This place is a must-go for me when I go spend the day in Death Valley. Located next to the entrance of the national park going to Death Valley through Bad Water. This place is an authentic diner that offers burgers, sandwiches and breakfast. Open 7 days from 8:00am to 9:30pm with non-stop service. Don't be too much in a hurry if you stop there for lunch as the wait can be extremely long but it's so much worth it. Get their homemade lemonade while you're waiting for your food and enjoy the place. There is only one person cooking so it's table after table and that's ok. Waitresses are nice and very efficient. I have been here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Haven't used the bar much. Breakfasts are good, especially when leaning toward U.S. comfort food, but don't be afraid to try the Mexican options. Hot coffee seals the deal. Lunch: If you somehow don't think the lunches here are good, you haven't been in the desert long enough. Get out there, hike around, bring an appetite (and lose the attitude). Dinner: Just the other night had great nachos, with olives and home-made tortilla chips, and a surprisingly tasty house red to go with my trout on rice. I could drive another 50 miles north and get a "cafe" that's mostly vending machines, or I could drive 80 miles south and get a strip of fast-food options, Denny's, and the Mad Greek (which isn't bad), or I could come here and get a solid and tasty square meal. Ummm, which one will I pick? The service: Always friendly, local, helpful, cheerful. Hard to believe they can get food this fresh way out here in the desert, but somehow they do it, and they make it look effortless. I have eaten indoors and outdoors. Indoors is fine, nothing fancy but comfortable. But I really enjoy the outdoors, either the tables in front or the little open-air patio to the side. Watch for mosquitoes in the early evening, but the warm breeze is refreshing, and the sunsets are to die for. Don't miss the museum next door, with not just old farm tractors but a surprisingly literate collection of prehistoric and modern natural history, from mastodons and Pangea-era camels to the lizards and pupfish that are here today. Mr. J says thumbs up! read more
