Appreciate that this place is early for a morning grab. Staff was very nice and welcoming. Latte was good too. The avocado toast wasn't quite as surprising but they give a generous amount of avocado spread. Interesting mix of strawberry on top. Tastes healthy at least! During the weekday, free parking on the street till roughly 11am. Easy to find if you circle the block versus doing the $5 lot next to the cafe.

Cool spot to meet up a friend (not ideal for groups more than 3). Street parking is tough but there's a paid lot and garage nearby. Busy place, long wait times for tables on weekends. My friend and I both got the coconut cream cold brew but was not a fan of the taste of the cold brew. Pricey for what you get.

Coffee was great, the bagel was alright. In my opinion the food was way overpriced for average. The vibe inside is awesome and the staff were super friendly. I definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

Came in to get work done and stayed way longer than planned. Got a flat white almond and it was delicious. The space opens up when you walk in so you're never fighting for a table. Plenty of seating, great wifi, and a crowd that respects that people are working. Playlist was also perfect. And the staff were super friendly. Def coming back!

This is a really cute and quiet coffee shop. They have seating by the coffee bar and an upstairs which is nice. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and a smoked salmon bagel. The barista was super friendly and helped me choose what to order. My vanilla latte was great! Not too sweet and a really nice flavor. It also came with some espresso chocolates which were cute. My boyfriend and I shared the smoked salmon bagel and it was good. A little expensive but it was good. I will definitely be back!

Amanda L.

Cute spot with lots of space for studying/hanging out! Food/drinks are not bad. Can be a bit pricey though.

I grabbed breakfast at this cozy cafe when I was last on a trip to Pasadena. It's in a charming part of town with a big tree out front. The coffee was hot and delicious and I got a big slice of lemon pistachio cake. What a combination. It was so rich that I couldn't eat the whole thing, but in a good way. If I lived locally, I would love that upstairs coffee/reading nook.

This was such a satisfying impromptu coffee experience. My friend and I drove in from San Diego for Masters of Taste at the Rose Bowl, had some extra time and decided to grab coffee and picked this place based on it having the highest yelp rating for coffee in the area. The place is small and intimate downstairs but also has an upstairs seating area. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and they had a live cello player performing ! Customer service was also really good considering it was crowded. We ordered the affogato and the banana date latte. Both which were beyond phenomenal and we are coffee snobs. The banana date latte was giving very much smoothie vibes so not a strong coffee presence and very banana forward and well, I was in LOVE. The affogato was really good because the espresso was strong and had good flavor. 10/10 recommend and will be back when I am in the area. They also sale ice cream which we didn't try but is supposed to be good so if the coffee is any indication of how the ice cream will be, I think it's worth a try.

Really enjoyed Criterion Coffee! The coffee was excellent--smooth, flavorful, and clearly made with quality beans. I especially appreciated that the drinks tasted balanced and not overly sweet. The atmosphere is clean, modern, and relaxing, making it a nice place to sit down and enjoy a good cup of coffee. The staff was friendly and welcoming as well.

Beautiful atmosphere, cozy seating, and solid coffee. Service is order at the counter and brought to your table of choice. The space is intentionally aesthetically designed and I love the touch of a fresh flower arrangement on the table. Definitely great for a coffee date or independent working.

While enjoying a morning walk in old town, we decided to stop by Criterion for breakfast. They have outdoor tables which was great since we had a dog with us. I like to support a small local business and the employees here are very friendly. I enjoyed my drink and my food was very tasty. I had an espresso drink with banana and it was so good!

Thuy Dan T.

Came for a quick brunch and the spot if very cute! A homey cafe with two seater style tables and even some upstairs seating it looked like. Plus some cute outdoor seating too. I got the Dubai latte hot and the healthy wealthy plate. The Dubai latte tasted like a regular latter with crushed pistachios on top so I wished the chocolate/nutty flavor came through more, but this flavor might have been better cold instead. At $9 with an oat milk substitution, this was pricey to me. The healthy wealthy plate came with eggs, salmon, avocado, waffle, and a side salad. A solid breakfast but at $19.50, still felt a little much with half the plate being the side salad. Tasted healthy though!

Criterion Coffee is a delightful spot in Pasadena. Today, I had the avaocado spinach smoothie, which had a creamy and thick texture. I wasn't a huge fan of the flavor, and felt it was missing something. However, I came once before and enjoyed the hot matcha latte! Calming, modern decor with a second floor with more seating, though it seemed pretty packed. Service was excellent and I'd come again to try more of their speciality lattes.

Downstairs seating area with the coconut tart and pistachio coffee. Try it and you'll love it!

Criterion is my favorite coffee spot and I go at least 1-2 times per week. The staff (Natalia, Brian, and Kay especially) are fantastic and make incredible drinks. Love the cortado, flat white with oat milk, and the drip coffee. The food, especially the salmon bagel, is excellent. It's also a wonderful place to hang out with friends and listen to the great live music they have some days. The best! read more

I arrived after a 7 hour drive from NorCal, and after having too much caffeine to sustain that ride, I was recommended their Raspberry Hibiscus Lemonade and a Ham and Cheese croissant. Pure bliss. The ambiance is very cozy and feels European, the music selection is almost always to my liking and the service is excellent also. Good ratio of espresso and milk and I liked the dark chocolate! But if you're used to super sweet mochas then this isn't for you! Pretty reasonable prices for Pasadena no? Or am I just used to everything being expensive. But here the vibes are really nice. They have WiFi and outlets too so lots of people had a wfh set up. The place was packed, and we were lucky enough to grab the last available table. I ordered the stacked pancake breakfast along with an iced matcha latte, which was refreshing after a workout class nearby. My husband chose the brisket lunch burrito. Our food took quite a while to arrive, close to 30 mins! But the staff was very apologetic and even brought us a complimentary muffin while we waited. The pancakes were light, fluffy, and delicious. I swapped the bacon for tofu, and it made for a satisfying breakfast. However, my husband wasn't as impressed with his brisket burrito, saying it was a bit dry. Based on this visit, I'd recommend sticking with the breakfast items, pastries, and of course, the coffee. Copa Vida still makes a great cup of coffee!

The Best Coffee Shop in All of Pasadena -- and I Mean That Criterion is simply the best café in Pasadena, and I say that as someone who has made it part of my daily life. I cannot imagine starting my morning without a cup of their coffee and a stack of their incredible pancakes -- it's a ritual I look forward to every single day. The vibe inside is warm and welcoming in a way that's hard to put into words. There's a beautiful chess board available, a lovely second floor that's perfect for a quieter experience, and live music every Saturday that makes the whole place come alive. It's the kind of spot where you actually want to linger. What really sets Criterion apart is the owner -- a trained chef who is almost always present and genuinely passionate about the food. He sources all products and groceries from Whole Foods, and you can absolutely taste the difference. The food doesn't just look stunning; it tastes like something out of a dream. Close your eyes and you're somewhere magical. They also have a bonus rewards system, which is a great touch for regulars like me. Honestly, this place has it all -- exceptional coffee, heavenly food, great atmosphere, and a community feel that's rare to find. I will truly miss this place. If you haven't been yet, go. You won't regret it. read more

Criterion is hands down one of the best coffee shops in Pasadena. The space itself feels thoughtfully designed--modern, minimal, and welcoming without being pretentious. It's the kind of place where you can just as easily settle in with a laptop for a productive morning as you can meet a friend for a slow weekend coffee. The coffee here is exceptional. Every drink feels carefully crafted, from their espresso shots--which are consistently smooth and balanced--to their pour-overs, which highlight the nuances of each bean. You can tell they take sourcing and preparation seriously. Even the basics, like a cappuccino or iced latte, taste a step above what you'll find at most cafés. Additionally, pastry is always fresh and food is delicious. The staff deserves a special mention: always friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they're serving. They're happy to walk you through different beans or brewing methods without any of the attitude you sometimes find at specialty shops. If you're someone who values both quality and atmosphere, Criterion is a must-visit. It has quickly become my go-to coffee spot in Pasadena, and I honestly can't recommend it highly enough. read more

Criterion Coffee was overall pretty mid for me. The space itself is very cute inside and the staff was friendly and welcoming, which I appreciated. As for the food and drinks, the coffee was okay but nothing particularly memorable. The macchiato leaned very acidic, which wasn't really my preference. The coffee I ordered was definitely better than the food. I also tried the avocado toast and it was a bit underwhelming. The bread didn't seem toasted enough and the whole dish felt pretty bland and lacking depth. I'm not sure what type of bread they use, but it had olives baked into it, which ended up overpowering the rest of the flavors. Overall, it wasn't bad, but nothing really stood out enough to make me want to come back. Pasadena has so many great coffee spots, so I'll probably keep exploring some of the other cafés in the area. read more

I've been to Criterion twice now and I already know it's becoming one of my favorite coffee spots. Their lattes are SO good... coconut cold brew, rose vanilla latte... great flavor and not too sweet! The ambiance is super cute and cozy without feeling chaotic or overcrowded, which I really appreciate. The upstairs seating area is such a hidden gem if you want to sit, chat, work, or just linger a little longer. Also... the pistachio lemon loaf is bomb. Like genuinely worth going back for on its own. Definitely one of those places that feels both aesthetic and actually comfortable at the same time P. S. The coffee was excellent, and the staff were friendly and welcoming throughout our visit. The food tasted fresh and was prepared well, making it a great spot for breakfast or a light lunch. Lattes for me just didn't carry enough of the coffee flavor, but with the milk brew it was definitely there. The service was so kind and I'm grateful they took the time to teach me about what they love. Also the cup shape is super cool small detailed I loved! There's plenty of room in here so I'm excited to see what other uses they can make of the unit! Please come try Milk Brew :)

There is street parking around the area and a good amount of seating both inside and outside. We paid about $33 for five items, which is a little on the pricier side, but considering that this cafe reminds me of a Studio Ghibli film, I expected as much. Nutellamisu Latte - Skip This was my least favorite, even though I thought I would like this the most! I was expecting a lot more Nutella and coffee flavor, but it mostly tasted like milk. The cream on top is is thick and a little salty, and I actually thought it tasted better once I mixed everything together. Milk Bread - Definitely Get!!! I loved this bread so much. The bread came out warm and it was so soft and fluffy. The custard topping made it even better. It was thick enough to share but I ended up eating the whole thing for myself. I would absolutely order this again and then another one. Blueberry Scone - Would Get The scone happened to moist upon first bite but got drier towards the middle. I would recommend eating the scone would a drink. Dark Cacao Latte - Would Get I would recommend getting this if you want a little treat of cacao nibs with your drink. It wasn't overly sweet. Overall, the selection here for drinks is unique! I love how they are experimenting and striving for perfection. I would definitely come back for the milk bread and to try their other pastries.

I ordered a cappuccino, apple juice(Martinellis, my favorite)and a bagel lox cream cheese. The everything bagel lox(salmon)was great and did not skimp on the meat and cream cheese. Service was also excellent on a busy Saturday. The location is nice near Colorado but a few streets away making it a more chill and relaxing location. Recommended.

I don't know if you can be nostalgic for something that is almost brand new but let us not quibble…read more The name is cute and catchy and the inside is extremely cozy and perfect for a rainy day (which it was during our visit). The furniture is lovely and the lighting is fantastic. I think they went for a quasi-Victorian look here. Someone did some good work with the interior design. The coffee drinks were solid and the French toast was generous and very good. The garden bagel with a side salad was very fresh and kind of healthy, but for the cream cheese (and the bagel itself--I don't know why but all bagels are just jammed with a million calories). Solid coffeehouse. I would return. Hint: the couch at the front is the sweet spot, if you can nab it.

The place is very cute and the vibes were pretty cool as well…read more Food was alright and the matcha was disappointing sadly and I'm not very picky. The workers are not friendly at all :(

I had a dreamy Queen Bee latte( espresso, local honey, vanilla extract and almond milk) I would love it more if they had coconut milk as it's better for you and the environment than oat or almond milk. Took home a salt bagel and pistachio croissant. Made a Canadian bacon and egg on half the bagel at home at it was delicious. I'm also a bagel snob as I lived in NY for 8 years. This was a good bagel. Saving the croissant for tomorrow so I'll update later but it's huge and looks flaky and yummy. The place is darling, definitely not your typical private equity coffee spot. The staff was super friendly and when I couldn't decide which pastry to get, the young man asked if I wanted sweet or savory. Love a place with great customer service There is the added bonus aid being across from the Armenian market and Prime Pizza, all places you need to go in Altadena.
