This was such a satisfying impromptu coffee experience. My friend and I drove in from San Diego for Masters of Taste at the Rose Bowl, had some extra time and decided to grab coffee and picked this place based on it having the highest yelp rating for coffee in the area. The place is small and intimate downstairs but also has an upstairs seating area. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and they had a live cello player performing ! Customer service was also really good considering it was crowded. We ordered the affogato and the banana date latte. Both which were beyond phenomenal and we are coffee snobs. The banana date latte was giving very much smoothie vibes so not a strong coffee presence and very banana forward and well, I was in LOVE. The affogato was really good because the espresso was strong and had good flavor. 10/10 recommend and will be back when I am in the area. They also sale ice cream which we didn't try but is supposed to be good so if the coffee is any indication of how the ice cream will be, I think it's worth a try.

I grabbed breakfast at this cozy cafe when I was last on a trip to Pasadena. It's in a charming part of town with a big tree out front. The coffee was hot and delicious and I got a big slice of lemon pistachio cake. What a combination. It was so rich that I couldn't eat the whole thing, but in a good way. If I lived locally, I would love that upstairs coffee/reading nook.

While enjoying a morning walk in old town, we decided to stop by Criterion for breakfast. They have outdoor tables which was great since we had a dog with us. I like to support a small local business and the employees here are very friendly. I enjoyed my drink and my food was very tasty. I had an espresso drink with banana and it was so good!

Came for a quick brunch and the spot if very cute! A homey cafe with two seater style tables and even some upstairs seating it looked like. Plus some cute outdoor seating too. I got the Dubai latte hot and the healthy wealthy plate. The Dubai latte tasted like a regular latter with crushed pistachios on top so I wished the chocolate/nutty flavor came through more, but this flavor might have been better cold instead. At $9 with an oat milk substitution, this was pricey to me. The healthy wealthy plate came with eggs, salmon, avocado, waffle, and a side salad. A solid breakfast but at $19.50, still felt a little much with half the plate being the side salad. Tasted healthy though!

Criterion Coffee is a delightful spot in Pasadena. Today, I had the avaocado spinach smoothie, which had a creamy and thick texture. I wasn't a huge fan of the flavor, and felt it was missing something. However, I came once before and enjoyed the hot matcha latte! Calming, modern decor with a second floor with more seating, though it seemed pretty packed. Service was excellent and I'd come again to try more of their speciality lattes.

Wow, just Wow! I recently tried this place with a girlfriend and we ordered a chia tea, pistachio latte and a coconut tart and everything was tasty. They have a variety of milk options for those who need it and some gluten free options. I seriously dream of the coconut tart. It was the perfect blend of creamy and sweetness along with the crust being soft. The coffee was amazing, great pistachio taste but I would have loved if they added crushed pieces, I felt that would have put it over the top. My friend loved her tea Chai and then have an upper and lower seating level. Service was exceptional, cozy feeling but bright and airy at the same time. I genuinely don't like coming to Pasadena but I will for this place.

First time trying Criterion Coffee today and so glad that I discovered this gem in Pasadena! They have your traditional coffees, and also a list of autumn/winter specialty drinks. They also had lots of food options but a bit on the pricier side. I loved their interior seating, it is so beautiful and felt so cozy. They have a couple tables outside as well. Although there was only one person working at the front, service was really quick. I got a hot pistachio vanilla latte. It was the perfect sweetness and earthiness. The pistachio and vanilla complemented each other very well. My only complaint is there's limited parking and all of it is metered. I look forward to getting some work done here one day! Criterion Bakery has become our go to café and truly one of our favorite places. For over a month now, it's been our weekend ritual, the perfect treat my partner and I share. Live jazz, beautiful energy, incredible service, and owners who are genuinely kind and present. It feels special every time. The husband and wife owners have created something truly meaningful here. From inviting the community in for a holiday weekend filled with music and giveaways, to simply showing up with warmth day after day, their care is felt in every detail. Our favorites never change, the avocado egg sandwich and a slice of the owner's homemade mandarin walnut cake, which is absolutely wonderful. We even brought family here on Christmas Day after being told they'd be open, only to arrive and see their door glass boarded up. Learning they had been victims of a burglary was heartbreaking. And yet, despite everything, despite exhaustion and personal loss of rest and time with family, they still showed up to serve their community. This goes far beyond business. It speaks to who they are. Criterion is warmth, home, resilience, and generosity, paired with excellent food and drinks. If there are awards to be given for heart, community, and commitment, I hope they receive every single one. Support them!

Criterion Coffee (Pasadena) is one of the best. Extreme euphoria rammed hard into me as the urge to scream words of joy filled me. Tears of immense happiness trickled down as I continued to sip. I ordered the Pistachio Vanilla Late ($7.50 - Whole Milk - Iced). "ThAt's GoOD!!! aHhH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I visited Criterion Coffee (Pasadena) on Thursday (around 1:14PM). The business is located in Old Town Pasadena; the parking situation is very bad. Expect to pay money for parking (ex: Meter Parking, Paid Parking Structures). Many Meter Parking Spots have maximum time limits of one or two hours, so splurge on a Paid Parking Structure if deciding to spend a lot of time at Criterion Coffee (Pasadena). Eventually, I found parking at Pasadena City Hall. It's a leisurely six minute walk to Criterion Coffee (Pasadena). I paid $1.25 per hour; meters accept coins or card. This is enforced from 7AM to 5PM. Service is immaculate at Criterion Coffee (Pasadena). Staff (receipt says Solara) is professional, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. All Staff carried a cheerful smile, and Staff worked nonstop. When Solara carried the completed drink to my table, two minutes and 46 seconds had passed. Very quick! As mentioned, I absolutely adored the Pistachio Vanilla Late ($7.50 - Whole Milk - Iced). It's functional and flavorful. I greedily grabbed onto its caffeine embrace. I felt awake. With sips, I let the flavor of fresh pistachio whisk me away on a journey. The coffee is not overly sweet nor bitter. It's not overly milky nor acidic. Its chill, bright liquid flowed like silk. It's just... pistachio. This existence is embedded in the coffee, whereas there's no distracting artificial masking. I absolutely gushed how they built upon the coffee's flavor On ambiance, Criterion Coffee (Pasadena) is exceptional. The location is very clean, well-ventilated, and functional. This business efficiently uses its space. The ground floor's interior contains eight tables, and there's two small outside tables. There's about six electrical outlets embedded into the long, vibrant couch. If you walk upstairs, the above floor contains six small tables. I happily noticed the big electrical adapters on each socket. There are many spots to plug! Customer internet with password is available; customers need to speak with staff for the information. The music is soft, smooth, and soothing. In addition, Criterion Coffee (Pasadena) has two chess sets (each on different floors). The ground floor has a self-serve water station. Near the back, there's a gender-neutral restroom. On the above floor, there's also a tiny stack of books and magazines. I also love how Criterion Coffee (Pasadena) felt extremely clean despite the many items, furniture, and ornaments. The colors were very vibrant. I even shared a small laugh when I saw the fake bookshelves upstairs. All in all, it felt like a sparkling, upscale cafe. There's magic here. If I were to nitpick, the menus were poorly maintained and sticky. Overall, Criterion Coffee (Pasadena) is one of the best. The Pistachio Vanilla Late ($7.50 - Whole Milk - Iced) is extremely delicious. I'm ecstatic the hype is real. The care and effort put into this establishment is very visible. Horrible parking aside, Criterion Coffee (Pasadena) is a must-try. 5 out of 5 - "GO!!"

I personally really enjoyed it and would come back. Parking is hit or miss since it's downtown pasadena. Had a handful of seats for people to study/work. 4.5/5

Solid coffee and food. The cappuccino was strong and the service is very friendly! It's a quiet location good for working on your laptop. My breakfast sandwich was just okay. It could use some seasoning on the eggs and an aoli or sauce. But the croissant was AMAZING!

I geeked over the interior of this place a bit. After months of wanting to try Criterion, I finally went today. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating and a stunning interior to go along with it- even the restroom tiles were cool I love that there's a more secluded section to sit upstairs in case you need some extra peace. I ordered a pistachio vanilla latte and grabbed a strawberry white chocolate chip cookie as well. The cookie was good. I loved the latte. It was the perfect texture & the flavors blend together nicely. The baristas are really friendly and gave great recommendations. One thing that stood out to me here was that they have so many different flavor combinations, whether seasonal or permanent menu items. I would love to see more options like this at other third wave coffee shops! Criterion Coffee is a 10/10 spot. I will be back (:

nice vibes in here besides that ai slop on the wall. sucks because there are other cool pics of pasadena that decorate the wall so i'm not sure why they'd use ai to "conjure" up these images. besides that, the decor and furniture in here are top notch. good quality leather couches and nice (i'm assuming) marble tables. service was pretty cordial, however, concise. as someone who is also a barista, i actually appreciate it. as for what i had, i only had a plain iced latte. serviceable and honestly pretty decent for the price. but besides that, all the food and pastry's looked yummy. and in house ice cream?!?! come on that's great. i hope this business prospers sans ai slop on the walls. read more

Love this spot. Criterion Coffee has quickly become one of my go-to places in Pasadena. The vibes are super chill -- minimalist design, lots of natural light, and somehow it's always quiet, even when it's busy. Great spot to get work done, read, or just zone out with a good pour-over. I've posted up here with my laptop for a few hours and also met friends for a catch-up -- it works for both. Spacious seating, not cramped like a lot of other coffee shops, and the layout makes it easy to either focus or socialize without feeling like you're in the way. The coffee's legit. Clean, smooth, and you can tell they care about what they're doing. I usually get a cortado or drip and both have been solid every time. If you're looking for a low-key place to work, meet up, or just escape the usual coffee shop chaos, Criterion's got you. I already liked Criterion, and now that I found out it's one free in-house refill (on the drip), it's become my favorite coffee spot in Pasadena! I get the drip and Americano, and they're both strong but not bitter. Pastries are excellent, and there's always been an open seat for my writing and reading. And a friendly staff. While the big chains have their place, it's so nice to have a high-quality independent coffee/tea shop within walking distance in my neighborhood. Criterion has it all: A chill and cozy ambiance (think: brick wall, fresh flowers, a nice loft area in the back, etc), delicious pastries, tasty drinks, incredibly friendly and prompt service, not to mention a great location in Old Town. Lately, they've even been bringing in talented local musicians to play on Sunday afternoons. Jazz in the afternoon? Why not! I love this and hope it continues. The only thing I'd like to see is for them to stay open later, into the evening. I realize the economics might make this challenging, but I could see this being a local evening hotspot and destination for live music if they were to go that route. But that's just wanting more of a good thing, right? Hardly a bad place to be for Old Town's nicest indie coffee spot. Looking for a nice place to sit and chill for a bit? Criterion is worth a look. read more

Wow! This place was fantastic!! The food was amazing and so was the coffee! The egg and avocado croissant sandwich was one of the best breakfast sandwiches over ever had! Food was okay (a bit overpriced imo) & it was $4 to add one extra shot to my drink. Though that is an average price, most cafes have a cheaper option when you add it in addition to your drink (which was a bit too milky). Way too expensive, and wouldn't necessarily go back because of this reason. read more

A cute hidden gem in downtown Pasadena. If you blink you could easily miss it. Luckily they have an outdoor A frame sign with a bistro table. Sweet & savory pastries, muffins, croissants, cookies and brownies are awaiting just behind the glass display case with decent pricing ranging from $4.50-$6 and bread loaves for $16. Almost every table was filled on a Monday. I met the ladies upstairs in their loft faux library nook. Enough space to comfortably fit about 12 people with sugar, stirrers, cups & water station. I enjoyed my drip cup of coffee in ceramic mug. Service was great. I was needing some assistance in the loft and staff were so awesome and attentive to us. They went out of their way to give quick assistance. My first visit here was pleasant. They definitely value customer service. It was a perfect choice to meet up with friends Te-see & Terry visiting from out of state. A happy reunion. Easy access to the freeway, right next to King taco with street parking. Free 2 hour parking within a block. Check the allotted times on signs. read more

I've had lunch here with friends and have plenty of seating, 1st floor and 2nd floor. Good stop to hang out and catch up with friends. This is another great, little coffee spot in Pasadena, just north of Old Town's main drag. It's quiet, quaint, the ambiance and aesthetic are top quality. You really feel as though you've been whisked away on vacation. Very peaceful spot to catch up with a friend or just relax. Their prices can be a touch moderate, but you're getting excellent quality service and products. I love this place! The way coffee houses used to feel like... I also appreciated that they bring in local musicians to add some lively and unique experience for their guests. I went here for the first time and tried the Criterion Omelette with the pastrami. Man, I have never had pastrami as a breakfast so I tried it and I LOVED it. So what was the problem? Well the dressing that they put in the salad was REALLY overpowering, they simply put too darn much to the point of the salad being very soggy in just a few minutes. I'm not sure if the salad is already prepared in a really large container or if they prepare it individually, whatever the case is I hope the kitchen staff fixes this and please don't put so much dressing, it is really hard to eat it. This is the only reason why I give them 2 stars, I hope they correct this issue and whenever I go back I will order the same thing again and update the review. Also, I do want to make a recommendation to the restaurant. When I got my mean with a piece of toast there was something missing, so I asked for jelly. Someone brought me some really fresh fruit berry jelly. Man, that was some of THE most delicious jelly or marmelade I have ever tried, it is simply delicious!! and man, that amazing jelly complemented the pastrami wonderfully, it is such a delicious combination!!! So why is the chef not providing this jelly with the pastrami dish from the very beginning? That I just don't understand. So Criterion Coffee, please make these two small corrections and you got a home run :-) read more

5 stars - because Yelp finally rescued us out-of-towners. Criterion's ~4.8* yelp average was the siren song - and it delivered . Coffee: 5/5 The cappuccinos? Perfection. Velvety whole quality milk foam, beautifully balanced roast--no bitterness, no "did they accidentally char this?" aftertaste like certain green-logo chains. The apple tart was flaky, buttery, seductive such that we had to order a second round: Their house-made sea salt caramel ice cream. Creamy, salty-sweet, addictive. Worth every calorie. Just found this spot recently and it is the perfect coffee shop for brunch or my personal fave study and work sessions There is also an upstairs area which is my go to study spot with plenty of seating charging ports and really cute decor. They have WiFi (just ask for the password upfront), a clean gender neutral bathroom, and a super convenient parking lot right next door ($5 an hour or $15 for the day) plus plenty of parking meters nearby. They also have a variety of bakery goods, drinks, and solid food which is great for long work sessions so you can stay comfortable and focused. The customer service here was absolutely horrendous. The cashier gave off major "I'd rather be anywhere else" vibes the second I looked at the menu for two minutes, and she never bothered to mention they had a smaller menu for the day because apparently saving the customer from confusion is beneath her. When I tried to order, I was rudely cut off with a pretentious tone, as if asking for an iced cookie butter latte was the equivalent of asking for a unicorn frappuccino. Then came the food disaster. I tried to order a simple turkey wrap and was told they were "too busy" despite the line being nonexistent. Only after I mirrored her attitude did she suddenly remember she could take food orders, though I wasn't thanking her for it. $17 for a tiny turkey wrap? Honestly, I should have just left earlier; her attitude alone did me the favor of saving me from wasting money. If you enjoy feeling like a nuisance just for wanting lunch, this is the place for you. Between the unfriendly service, flavorless coffee, and being asked to leave well before closing, I won't be coming back. There are plenty of other cafés in Pasadena that offer much better coffee and treat their customers with respect.

The restaurant itself has been here for about 15 years now and it used to be a very old house. You can tell when you look around. It comes unsweetened, but there's a convenient self-service station stocked with simple syrup, utensils, napkins, and to-go containers so you can customize it however you like. One thing to note is that it's a self-bus restaurant, so after your meal you'll return your tray and dispose of your trash. This was a poor execution of a risotto. The texture was off, and the flavor was overwhelmed by whatever cheese they used in this dish. The charred scallop was one single scallop cut in half and overly charred and rubbery in taste. The blue shrimp were shriveled too. We made sure to eat the proteins to prevent waste but you know it's bad when my boyfriend didn't even want to togo this dish. He normally eats anything to prevent waste. Branzino alla Griglia ($38) - Whole grilled branzino topped with eggplant, salsa verde and herb salad. This was the least bad item that we paid for... Although there was a lot of bones to be cautious of. I understand the risk of stumbling on a few bones when ordering a whole fish but this was more than I would have liked. I also didn't like some of the flavors coating the fish. Although from a grilled perspective it was crispy and perfectly cooked. This is a popular business with plenty of patrons to keep them busy. Whatever they like... it isn't what I look for in a business I frequent. I know they don't need my business and I will gladly stay away and save myself all of the trouble. This was way too stressful and there weren't any dishes I need to have again. My experience was so awful I'm being very generous with this 3 star, which is "average".

Criterion Coffee was overall pretty mid for me. The space itself is very cute inside and the staff was friendly and welcoming, which I appreciated. As for the food and drinks, the coffee was okay but nothing particularly memorable. The macchiato leaned very acidic, which wasn't really my preference. The coffee I ordered was definitely better than the food. I also tried the avocado toast and it was a bit underwhelming. The bread didn't seem toasted enough and the whole dish felt pretty bland and lacking depth. I'm not sure what type of bread they use, but it had olives baked into it, which ended up overpowering the rest of the flavors. Overall, it wasn't bad, but nothing really stood out enough to make me want to come back. I've been to Criterion twice now and I already know it's becoming one of my favorite coffee spots. Their lattes are SO good... coconut cold brew, rose vanilla latte... great flavor and not too sweet! The ambiance is super cute and cozy without feeling chaotic or overcrowded, which I really appreciate. The upstairs seating area is such a hidden gem if you want to sit, chat, work, or just linger a little longer. Also... the pistachio lemon loaf is bomb.
