The food was fantastic but be prepared for the seating situation, we weren't. First off, this is a very popular local place and it will likely be packed. There isn't a hostess so it's a "wait till a table opens and go sit at it even if it hasn't been bussed" type of place. Once you sit they'll bus the table though so don't worry, you don't have to eat the leftovers. The wings are phenomenal. Hands down the best I've ever had. The mild wasn't too spicy and had a great flavor and the Gold were super sweet and smoky with a little tang. The fries aren't anything to write home about as a side, but the teaser appetizer that has the cheese and bacon fries definitely was. The bacon is fresh and crispy and the fried apps on it are really crunchy and the oil tastes very clean and not reused a lot. The place was a -little- dirty in certain areas like the back wall where we sat and the bathroom, but it wasn't overall disgusting or a health violation, just could've used a little tlc. I saw Cricket's featured in a food magazine, so I asked my friend who lives in that area and he said he hasn't been there in years, so I made it a point to go when I visited him. Cricket's is a Madison staple and walking in, they have history all along their walls. I had to order the Honey Gold sauce, which was basically a cross between honey mustard and Carolina Gold barbecue sauce. I quite liked the sauce, but after a while the tanginess kind of sits in your throat. The wings and fries came out piping hot right out of the frier so that was great. The wings were a bit on the small side and the fries were pretty plain, but the wings had a nice crunch and the fresh-from-the-frier heat helped. I can't believe I haven't reviewed Cricket's before! This place is a hidden treasure and a true Madison staple. If you want wings, this is one of the best spots in town. In my opinion it is the best. I drive from Harvest to Cricket's newly every game day just to grab wings and bring them back home for friends and family. My go-to is the Honey Gold. You can eat in, but it can be a pretty tight space at peak times and they have definitely outgrown the layout over the years. The only real downside is the bathrooms are tiny and tucked down a narrow hallway toward the back, but honestly, when the wings are this good, who is focused on the bathrooms? My daughter keeps telling me the burgers are great and that I should try one. I probably will someday, but it is hard to order anything else when the wings are so good. I went to Crickets for lunch. I ordered a burger with fries and my partner ordered a burger with sweet potato fries. We didn't have to wait long and received our orders quickly and efficiently. The burgers were very tasty and the lettuce, tomato and onions were all freshly added to the burger and tasted delicious. The fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. The sweet potato fries were also well cooked and we're tasty. The restaurant was packed on a Saturday night shortly after opening, but the waitstaff were incredibly attentive with refills and friendly to boot. As for the food - the lemon pepper wings were smaller than most wings I've had, but deliciously crispy and flavorful. It's got your typical bar food sort of menu with things like wings, burgers, deep fried appetizers etc. Lots of seating inside and out and prompt service in spite of being pretty busy during lunchtime. I tried a burger and some wings and both were good but I'd order the wings over the burger if I had to choose between the two. The wings were big and fat and delicious which I think is everything that a wing is supposed to be. The burger was ok but not great but worth ordering if a burger is what you're looking for. Overall this is sort of a laid back, easygoing bar/lunch spot that would be goof for watching sports while munching on familiar foods done well enough to keep you coming back.
