I thought maybe it was just a FAD because i wasn't that impressed, but after going to other locations, I realized it was just this specific location. The only thing comparable to CREAM that I've come across in my time is Diddy Riese - located near the UCLA campus in Westwood. CREAM shares several characteristics to Diddy Riese. Like Diddy Riese, CREAM is located near a campus (UC Berkeley in this case), and offers ice cream sandwiches at an affordable price. The sandwiches are made of two freshly baked cookies and a scoop of ice cream. There are a variety of flavors to choose from, so you can mix and match the type of ice cream sandwich you want. Also, similar to Diddy Riese, CREAM offers the ice cream sandwiches at a low price ($2 if you pay with cash, $2.50 with a card) and there is generally a long line out the door. The last time I went to CREAM, my group had to wait 30 minutes before we were able to order our ice cream sandwiches, but amazingly, it was worth it. CREAM is a small place, but one with a good vibe. There are two small tables set up near the entrance, but given the length of the line, most people eat their ice cream sandwiches outside, or on-the-go. When you walk in, there is music bumpin' on the sound system and it isn't uncommon to see the customers and staff dancing while they order/prepare orders. Also when you walk in, you can smell the aroma of fresh cookies. There are generally between 5-10 customers inside the building itself, and at that time, they decide what type of cookies and ice cream they want. Sometimes, customers will order a dozen cookies or so, but generally people stick to ice cream sandwiches. On my visit, I ordered the M&M cookies with chocolate ice cream. It was an excellent combo. The cookies were warm and soft on the inside and the cold ice cream serves as a great contrast. Such a great location right off UC Berkeley....they're not going to have any problems getting customers! This was where I tried my first CREAM ice cream sandwich. Luckily now they have one in Davis closer to home, and will soon have one built in Elk Grove. But we still had to stop by for a treat after eating at KoJa next door. Usually I have no complaints about my visits to CREAM, but today is a 3 1/2 (I am rounding to 4 to be nice) and let me tell you why.... The line is out the door every time! Luckily that doesn't deter people from leaving because the line goes by fast. They should post a menu on the door or outside so customers can decide their order ahead of time. Once I got inside to finally see the menu, I couldn't decide on my ice cream and cookie flavors quick enough....and felt a bit rushed :( It doesn't help that their sneeze guard is a mile high and I can't hear the staff on the other side, or vice versa... I also want to point out that the cashiers always assume that people are paying in cash. We had 2 ice cream sandwiches plus a topping which should total $5.75...but she assumed that we were paying cash so she told me our total was only $4.75 and I could not use the check-in offer on Yelp ($5 minimum to get a free cookie). I felt so pressured by the growing line behind me and didn't catch her mistake....so I bought a 69 cent cookie just to get a free one. Which doesn't make sense math-wise in the end because once she realized I was paying with card, our price went up another $1 and I paid for that extra cookie for nothing. And after I paid for everything, she handed me a penny and walked away. Huh? Anyway, the sandwich was good but really messy. We have been trying ice cream sandwiches at different places all week long, and this was by far the messiest. It just goes to show that it's not necessarily all about the name. The places you would least expect to have awesome ice cream sandwiches usually come out on top! Going to CREAM is a rite of passage if you to to Cal and that's basically all it is, a (usually one and done) experience waiting in a huge line during the first few weeks of your freshman year. In the three and a half years I've been at Cal the price of an ice cream sandwich has gone from $2 or $2.50 to $4. That's a huge increase and a big contributor to why I don't go there often. Their cookies are good and their ice cream is good but the price is way too much for me to justify. My suggestion? It deserves a 4 star as my favorite ice cream sandwich place. There was a small line due to the fact that it was raining but that's not gonna stop me from getting my ice creams. I was a bit hyped up to try this place because I've heard nothing but great things, but it fell short of my expectations from what friends have expressed. I do think one of these would be awesome to have in Sacramento area, maybe around William Land Park area where the college campus and the Zoo are located would be fitting! Once you have thrown your choice together they whip up your order and for under $5 a cookie sandwich you are on the go. The white chocolate macadamia cookies I had were soggy upon my first bite.. so I know it wasn't the melted ice cream. While we were there an employee dropped an ice cream bucket on the ground while trying to get out the last few scoops to not waste product.. at that point.. I think it should've just been tossed!! It was a Monday night and parking was hard to find. That's an annoying yet good indication that the place you're about to venture in on is good. That plus the fatty line wrapped around the outside of the CREAM store. I really adore the concept of this place-specializing in ice cream sandwiches of all sorts of flavors. I waited probably 15 minutes to get my salted caramel ice cream sandwiched between two fat snickerdoodle cookies. The cookie itself was kind of hard which made eating the ice cream difficult because my cookie would smoosh the cream out and it would ooze out the side. So if your cookie isn't soft then ice cream will definitely be melting all of your hand. Maybe I got a bad or old cookie-I am not sure. The ice cream however was perfect. From the appearance you would have thought it was soft served because my scoop was so smooth and soft looking like a fluffy cloud of marshmallow. My date got a double chocolate chip cookie with mint chocolate inside. He had better luck with the texture of his cookie, not as hard. Next time I would like to try the sugar cookie with the green tea ice cream. If you'd like to know though, my favorite ice cream shoppe is Bi-Rite creamery in SF. High hopes for this place, considering cookie ice cream sandwiches are the bessttt ! Buuut, shortly after getting our cookie ice cream, cookie was already superrr hard, not soft/chewy in any places whatsoever, so it made it hard to eat. Cool experience. Gotta admit that I only tried this place because I was passing by and noticed a line out the door. Like most people think/say, "it must be good." For $2 you get to choose your two cookies and the ice cream in between. I ordered one double chocolate chip cookie & a chocolate chip cookie with ultra chocolate ice cream in between. This was SUPER sugary and delicious. I honestly have to confess I didn't finish 100% of it because it was getting a bit messy towards the end and I had reached my sugar/chocolate capacity but I would love to give this place another run the next time I'm in town. CREAM - Double chocolate chip cookie & chocolate chip cookie w/ chocolate ice cream - Desserts Near Me - Berkeley, California

After being a veteran at Diddy Reese in Los Angeles (next to UCLA), I just had to try CREAM when I heard about it. My friends and I looked up the menu before we got there and already decided what we had wanted beforehand. The parking is on the street and if it's a pretty busy time, you'll get lucky if you get a spot near CREAM. We had to walk quite a bit, but it's OK. Cream is located on a corner and was easy to spot. Once inside the store, you are greeted by the staff. The selection is plentiful and hard to decide what to get! I finally decided to get the white choco cookies and green tea ice cream on the inside. For the price, it was well worth it.... but.. I've had Diddy Reese and I think they set the bar HIGH for me. CREAM just doesn't come up to par, but then again...it's on the other side of the state! So, if I'm in the area.... definitely going back. The price just screams GOODNESS :) read more
