One of a number of Crate & Barrels in the greater Chicagoland area, this was a nicely laid out store in Northbrook. We had dinner reservations in Winnetka and had an hour to use up before eating, so we drove over to Crate & Barrel for a little shopping therapy. This Northbrook store is a nice representative of the chain, carrying all of the usual merchandise you've come to expect. For us we always gravitate to the glassware where the Crate & Barrels have a great selection. We especially like the Aspen line which is made in Slovakia, and on this visit purchased a box of eight martini glasses: while you can spend $15 per glass on some brands if you desire, this line has more reasonable prices like $6.25 ... $49.95 for eight. We also got a few other items as Crate & Barrels are famous for stocking a few things that you won't find anywhere else. Nice visit. We needed a toaster and picked a pretty pricey one (imho) and because I had C&B rewards, it was free! How bout that? I also picked out a beautiful ladle (work of art, heavy, $$) and some of the tiniest spoons ever, doll-sized (mustard spoons, go figure). Prolonged and unresolved issues with a bed frame order I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with Crate & Barrel has been extremely disappointing. I ordered a bed frame that was delivered with incorrect and broken legs. Replacement legs were sent, but the screws provided were not compatible. Additional screws were later sent, but those were also incorrect. After using the bed for some time, the legs ultimately failed, causing the bed frame to break. I contacted Crate & Barrel again and was told an exchange order had been placed for a brand-new bed frame. While waiting for the replacement, I had no usable bed and slept on the floor. Over the next several months, my delivery was repeatedly scheduled and then postponed due to missing inventory. This happened multiple times over a period of 4-5 months. After continued delays, I contacted customer service after discovering that the wrong SKU had been ordered for the replacement bed frame, which explained why the item was never being delivered. This issue had gone unnoticed and unresolved until I identified it during my call. As an apology for the inconvenience, I was offered a gift card. Unfortunately, it was sent to the wrong email address. When I followed up, I was directed to the gift card management site, but no gift card was available to access. This experience involved repeated errors across delivery, inventory management, and customer support, and ultimately resulted in more than a year without a proper resolution. I expected a much higher level of coordination and follow-through from a company with Crate & Barrel's reputation. read more

Every time I visit this Crate & Barrel location, I walk away feeling unwelcome and overwhelmed. Rather than creating a pleasant shopping environment, the staff frequently approach me within minutes often multiple times in a short span asking if everything is okay. It doesn't feel helpful; it feels like I'm being watched or followed, which makes the experience uncomfortable. Also, whenever I pick up a heavy item, no one offers to assist or offer to hold it at the register, even when I'm clearly heading to check out. read more

Over the past years I find myself going over all over the place looking for ideas for the home but have ended up buying from Crate and Barrel. We needed a new headboard. Find a relaxed modern one that we loved at Crate and Barrel. We needed flexible cabinets for our main basement room. We found terrific ones that we worked with someone to create the layout with. Our dishes of 20 years were on their last leg. We found classic dishes with a modern touch - again at Crate and Barrel. Anytime I go I always find good customer service. And the employees do work to answer ALL of my questions. What? I like to be sure before I buy. I never really thought of myself as a C&B girl but I may as just embrace it. read more

My husband and I were greeted upon entering the store. We immediately asked for the restroom because really, who can shop while holding their bladder? The employee directed us with multiple options to get there. Take the elevator or escalator upstairs and its in the far back corners next to the clearance furniture. Restrooms are clean, so that's a plus. The store is clean and neatly organized with larger pieces of furniture upstairs and the smaller appliances and decor downstairs. Fun appliance sold here is an ice maker that makes the ice similar to the Chick Fil A ice. Go try some, its near the register downstairs with infused water. We were asked if we needed assistance multiple times throughout our walk around the store. We were greeted more downstairs than upstairs. Maybe I just looked like I wasn't there to buy furniture that day? The last employee assisted us with our pick up order. She tried to remember how to spell my last name without writing it down. I started to count down when she would come back to me requesting my order number and how to spell my name again. The 2nd time around she had pen and paper. Our package was located with ease and we picked up via curbside. A gentleman placed the package in our trunk for us. No lifting required for us. Overall, clean store with friendly staff. Truly blown away at the brazen deception that is now standard practice for nearly every online retailer I have done business with the past year. Training their employees to steal from their customers through non-disclosure and fraudulent tactics. Read this carefully for any future online purchase thru C&B or any other. I returned a light pendant - which was lost in their warehouse for two months - before finally "finding" it yesterday AFTER I called for the 18th time to get status update. The rep credited my account for the purchase price of the item. When I asked why the sales tax was not being credited, she informed me that it would be credited by the warehouse at a later time. What? I burst out in laughter. Do I need to say anymore? Are you kidding me? Of course, they are counting on the customer not remembering the exact amount to be credited and if, like me, they do, they will have to follow up AGAIN to ensure the "warehouse" has refunded the remaining charge. Unreal. Shameless. How desperate. How short-sighted. They have lost this customer for life. The saddest part of all of this is that companies are TRAINING their employees in such evil practices. Young, impressionable, eager-to-please employees being taught that this is how one experiences success in business. Nothing short of tragic. Like in all aspects of life, we reap what we sow. They may increase revenue thru such practices for a period, but their demise will ultimately occur. read more

A stand-alone building on a northbrook shopping plaza. It's a better than average location with a good assortment of choice for home decor and kitchen ware. It was not busy and we were helped by various Crate and Barrel employees. It may sound typical; however, not so. We've experienced some locations which could care less to assist even with sparse visitors. Kudos to the employees at this location to making us feel welcome. We bought an expensive sofa here for a living room that was barely used and didn't end up working for our room due to the small size. I called to see if we could exchange it towards buying a much larger sofa. We had purchased many items at the time and spent a lot of money. When I spoke with the very unhelpful manager on the phone, she was short and non-accommodating. I had hoped she would be open to finding a resolution but she was not. Went into the crate and barrel in Northbrook Illinois and had an amazing experience. We were helped by Michelle and Chris and they were so friendly, so nice, so helpful....A+ I went in with my daughter. She had just had a huge bridal shower and some of our guests bought multiples of things. She had registered at three stores for her bridal shower and Crate & Barrel by far was the most organized. Every box that was shipped to our home was so nicely packed and we knew exactly who it was coming from. The store is clean, nicely organized, and displays are beautiful just a very pleasant experience, We would definitely recommend doing your wedding registries at crate and barrel. read more

I recently needed to purchase new furniture for my smallish, awkwardly shaped family room. I went into the store and spoke with a lovely, very friendly and knowledgable man named Joel. After walking him through the dimensions of my space and awkward layout, we decided on the quick ship Douglas Nickel fabric Axis 88in 2 seat sofa, the Axis 66in loveseat, and the Gather swivel chair. I did not realize until we placed the order with Joel that the loveseat was a custom size. He placed the order for me. I was so excited until the sofa arrived (still waiting on the loveseat) and the fabric appeared much lighter than what I thought and what I needed because we have two little boys who DESTROYED our other sofa. No big deal right? Just swap it out for the darker, other in-stock, quick-ship fabric. Nope. I called customer service and I called the physical store. They refused to swap out the fabric because our loveseat happened to be in a custom SIZE--not custom fabric or anything else, just a larger size (66in W). Mind you, the order was placed in late Jan, the sofa arrived in Feb, and I still do NOT have the loveseat. The loveseat is "in production" and not due to arrive until April. What I don't understand is why they wouldn't just swap out the fabric when the sofa clearly is not finished yet. I'm not canceling the sofa or changing the size of the frame, just the fabric. I cannot imagine the fabric has been placed on the loveseat yet, given that it's not due to arrive for another two months. I'm sincerely so disappointed and very upset and hesitate ordering anything considered "custom" from Crate again. To be clear-- this is not a dig at Joel or at the lovely customer service woman that I spoke with, Melissa. They were both absolutely wonderful, sympathetic and kind. I have purchased furniture from Crate and Barrel online twice. Both have been negative experiences. After the first time, I thought I would give them a second chance, so because I did love the bed I purchased. I placed an order of dressers and beds for my home. The items came sporadically. The first bed arrived and all the pieces weren't delivered. We didn't get the remaining pieces for nearly three months and my son slept on a mattress on the floor as a result. Then the dressers started to arrive. Almost all of them were damaged. The delivery people left some until replacements could arrive. Then I was charged for an additional dresser I didn't purchase. I spent hours on the phone with customer service rescheduling deliveries, trying to get credit for charging my debit card for purchases I didn't make, and then taking time off work for multiple deliveries only to receive damaged furniture. Finally, months later I had everything delivered in satisfactory shape. NOW, two years later, I have an over $1000 debit on my checking account from Crate and Barrel. I called my bank about the fraudulent charge. They encouraged me to call Crate and Barrel first. I was informed in the call, this is a "storage charge" for purchases they held until September 2023. No. I scheduled everything to be delivered as soon as it was available. They can't tell me what was held. They can't tell me anything delivered that late in 2023. They have to "investigate". This is the second time they have charged my debit card fraudulently and then taken days to investigate and weeks to reimburse the money! And it's been two years since I ordered the furniture! They are stealing from my bank account without authorization. They have my email (to send me lots of sale notices), my phone number, my address. They never sent any notification of this transaction; just took it from my account. That's stealing in my book. When you get someone on the phone, they all say they're sorry but a supervisor has to look at it, they can't do anything. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM! read more

Update. They sent me media console #4 this last weekend. Guys came in and we began checking it out. We noticed a huge crack in an interior board .. in the EXACT same spot as delivery #1 ... Soooo .. they sent us the same damaged piece again. Not only is this a huge waste of our time, and a huge waste of the money they spent delivering it ... But everyone should know that they are just re-stocking damaged pieces for resale. This piece had a serious crack. They didn't send it to the outlet store for an as-is sale, they just put it back in the warehouse hoping some other dummy wouldn't notice. Very nice way to treat customers. read more

we purchased two couches five years ago and for the past year they have been shedding feathers like a snowstorm. The fabric didn't age well either. We are two adults living without children and when we asked the store to help us, they offered to charge us a large amount to maybe fix the issue and told us that couches only should last seven years. Really? The original store was great to work with, but I understand it has been sold to a German firm. I thought the Germans were proud of the goods they made. Guess not. Meanwhile, buyer beware. These are not IKEA prices but less than IKEA quality. I will never buy any furniture from them again. read more

I can't find one of these urban stores in Florida because it's hard to find a for real urban place in Florida. So I shop online. C&B offers a lot of wonderful bed & bath items. Luckily for their sales team, and of course for little ole' me, they had a classy 6' runner in stock. When it came on the promised delivery date, I tore into the sealed package. That's when I understood the Crate part of the store name. The natural fiber in the rug smelled like it was just off the boat. One would think that when you are working with a customer service person at this store they would show you just that. Some customer service. I was in search of a specific item. I called the day before to find they had 11 of these items in the store. I came in the next day, and either someone couldn't read, or 11 mini skillets got bought in a matter of 20 mins. When the manager explained to me "the system says we have them, but we don't", and I responded, "I called and you told me you had them, you said come on in". Then it turned into a he said she said, Well you didnt talk to me. Bottomline I went into Sur La Table at NBC and they had the item I wanted, for a cheaper price, and did it all with a smile. This Crate & Barrel is great! We went there for a special event they had to register and the the entire staff was super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Sarah was helping us and she told us everything we needed to know, sent us off on our own, and checked in on us every so often to make sure we were doing okay. Every time we looked at something new we had someone approach us and explain how to make a good selection, and what they personally would recommend. It was like they really wanted to make sure that you got something you would love and appreciate, but they were always really polite, not pushy at all. This particular location is massive, so if you aren't easily overwhelmed it's a great place to register or just shop for home wares - including furniture on the second floor! read more

The basics collection of tableware is simple, attractive, durable and reasonably priced. I just replaced my bed linens with a set from Crate & Barrel. Furniture is expensive, but as well made as anything you'll find. Watch for sales; you can get great deals. I got 8 dining chairs at 15% off each, saving several hundred dollars. read more

I learned a valuable lesson today - Crate and Barrel does not sell mirrors or furniture through this store, it is "just a show room" - this is what I was told by sales people and managers. I was looking for a mirror to stage my clients' home, stopped by this store, saw nice Colby wall mirror on the wall, with $199 price tag, wanted to purchase it - I needed a mirror today - latest tomorrow. They refused to sell it! Sales person and store manager said, that they do not have this mirror in back room, cannot sell the one that they have, and have to order one for me, that will be shipped in few days. When I asked why they don't have it in stock, they tried to explain that the policy of a store is not to stock any large items at all. "We are just a show room":). That's ridiculous, as then we all are perfectly capable to do our own online shopping. And it's not large - 23"x37", small bathroom mirror. Then I was told, that Crate and Barrel store on North avenue in Chicago has two mirrors, and the store in Schaumburg has a few, that I could drive there and buy it there. So, these stores have a different business model and are not just show rooms? This is really bad customer service, in my opinion, does not help to get more sales done. I got another mirror in 30 minutes from Pottery Barn, they keep their mirrors in stock. There is always something to buy at CB. I have a house full of funiture and accessories. The quality and timeless style can't be matched. They prices are on the high side. But if you factor in how long the piece is going to last. It is very resonable. This is a great place for gifts. They give you those heavy duty boxes which is a great marketing ploy. Everyone knows where you were and there is no need for wrapping paper. When you walk in with one of those, they know there's something good inside. Crate and Barrel is one of those special shops that you go to to buy the beautiful things that you need. And the things that you want for the kitchen, but the special thing about this location is the furniture upstairs. I went there the other week and ordered three beautiful, reasonably priced cabinets with glass doors, which were supposed to be delivered on tuesday. Diane, the woman who was helping us, told us that we would get a call on Saturday to schedule a delivery time for Tuesday. They didn't call on Saturday, but they did call on Sunday, and the cabinets were delivered 1/2 hour early on tuesday! Simply wonderful service and an incredible product -- I'll definitely be back! read more

Had a HORRIBLE experience with them just recently when purchasing a bridal shower gift to be sent to the bride and groom. Ordered a gift which was in stock which they immediately charged for the item however, didn't ship it for 6 days ( way to use my money for 6 days and not send my product out that was in stock nor pay me interest on my money). As far as I can tell the only reason they finally shipped it on the 6th day was because I complained and now it is going to take an additional 3 days for the gift to arrive to its destination. What's not to love about Crate and Barrel..I have been both an employee (really fun atmosphere and they treat you like family! and you don't have to fold clothes! People that I worked with from over 10 years ago still know who I am and always give me a warm greeting everything I see them) and a shopper. You can find anything there, from casual dining sets to more fancy..kitchen items (love their gadget wall) to furniture. Plus they have a new line called "Clean Slate" to help you organize anything!
