In all of Gainesville, with so many breakfast and brunch spots, where did we go back to? CRACKER BARREL. We were so happy with everything the last time, we headed right back over there for breakfast. Let me put this to you...when you walk in somewhere and the "hostess" blandly looks at you and says "how many", grabs silverware, menus and you blindly follow them to a table...what kind of impression does that leave you with? This Cracker Barrel is not like that! You round the corner to see a bright young lady with the biggest smile on her face beaming at you! Fake smile? Oh no, this one came from inside her and she glowed from the inside out! "Good Morning!" "How many are in your party this morning?" We hold up two fingers, stunned by that smile and the radiant nature that's so unexpected..."Right this way, follow me please..." and you do as you always do and follow to your table... Again, she turns that radiant smile upon you and says, your server will be right over. Is this okay for you here?" We nod and smile back, awestruck at someone so genuinely happy and pleasant. Had a lovely visit to Cracker Barrel recently! Tracy was our server and she was absolutely wonderful, so sweet attentive and friendly. I ordered the Grandma's Breakfast with pancakes, loaded hashbrowns, and bacon, and it was super filling and satisfying. The biscuits we got at the beginning were so fluffy and you could tell they were recently popped out of the oven. Their apple butter jam situation , I'm not sure what it's called but it's amazing on the biscuits and corn bread. What really stood out was Tracy's kindness. I had asked for two syrups to go, but totally forgot about them when we left. Next thing I know, she tracked us down in the store to hand them to me, such a thoughtful touch that really made the experience special. I met a client at this particular location and found that our server was friendly and attentive. I went with the chicken fried steak and eggs. I will say that this is my breakfast go-to not only at Cracker Barrel, but any place in the south (up north, it is probably a western omelet). I will also say that I think the best meal that Cracker Barrel offers is breakfast. After our meal, I did wander about the store for a couple of minutes. When we go on road trips, we're generally up and out at dawn, driving a couple of hours before stopping for breakfast. Cracker Barrel was our go-to restaurant, simply because there are so many of them on the highways we travel. Then came the pandemic, and we started buying breakfast biscuits at Bojangles or Chick Fil A to eat in the car. Yesterday we decided to stop. And .... memory serves, weren't Cracker Barrel's breakfasts better a few years ago? Rather than get the white gravy that came with the meal, I asked for a double order of grits. Usually creamy and delicious, my grits had a hard shell, like they'd been sitting out. They were tasteless. Biscuits were as good as I remembered, but they looked different. A step up was the coffee; it used to be weak, like drinking hot water, regardless of the Cracker Barrel we were in. I think corporate changed blends. I suspect we'll continue to periodically breakfast at Cracker Barrel. (When you want to make time, convenience counts.) I have never been a fan of the big barn, retiree-infested restaurants that Cracker Barrel and its competitors are a part of, and when I am thinking about going out to a restaurant they are the last thing that I will resort to. However, sometimes the stars align and the eventuality of my participation in a meal at one does happen. This was one of those times. I was with a large group of people who had just finished up from a long weekend of attending and performing at the local medieval fair, and this was where everyone decided to go. Well, I wanted to be with my friends, and thus the stars aligned. We were... an unruly bunch, to say the least. Everyone still dressed in their medieval attire, a bit grungy because we perform live-action choreographed sword fights on a chessboard, we made quite a sight when walking in to the other patrons. Oh... if only they knew what was about to happen. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, which was a good thing as we were also somewhat loud. Our drink orders were taken, and eventually our food orders as well. Certain items were out of stock, but it was later on a Sunday night, so I am not faulting the establishment for that sort of thing. Heck, I managed to still get one of the last chicken pot pies, so I was happy! The staff took us in stride, and handled us well. However, as I said we were an unruly bunch, to the point where we managed to drive one of the wait staff under a table at one point, and another kind of screaming out the back door (No... really... he went out the back door for a small amount of time due to our antics!) They handled it well, and Michael (the one who went under the table) really was a good egg. The food was fine (their lemonade is top notch) and it came out in good order given the situation. My wife and I have tried to give this restaurant a chance but each time they have failed miserably. We went for dinner about a week ago. I order the Fried Chicken and she ordered the Sliced Turkey. We also tried the hashbrown casserole potato ball appetizer. The first issue was our service. She had no clue what pieces of chicken came with the Chicken Dinner. She was extremely inattentive and had to ask for everything as she took no initiative. Our appetizer came out and it was cold. The cheese on the top would not even melt. The bacon on top was cold like it was right out of the refrigerator. We promptly sent them back and the manager came out. My wife explained the issue to him. He took them back and remade them and they came out hot and fresh this time because he stated he did it himself. I asked the manager, when he returned what pieces of chicken came on my meal. He advised it was a breast, thigh, wing, and leg. I stated thank you and that was great. When our meals came my plate had 2 thighs, a wing and leg. The manager brought our food and I asked him why 2 thighs and no breast and he stated he had no idea. He then came back and said we are out of breasts and I am not sure why. He then stated he would have the cooks drop a boneless chicken breast to take the place of the missing piece of chicken. He then came back out several minutes later and stated the cooked dropped a bone in breast. I advised the manager that would take a while to cook and my wife already had her meal. He said OK but he would make sure it was done quickly. After thirty minutes no chicken breast. My wife stopped another server as ours was not where to be found our entire meal. She asked where the chicken was and she stated she would go check on it. The breast had been cooked and left sitting on the hot hold the entire time. No one checked on it, our server never checked on it and the manager were busy doing something else. I never touched the chicken on my plate because it was cold when it was brought out. My mac and cheese were the only item hot on my plate. My fries tasted like they were cooked the day prior. My entire plate with 5 pieces of chicken was sent back and I ate mac and cheese and the appetizer. It seems regardless of when we have gone into this location, we always have an issue with the quality of food or the service. We have tried now 5 times with this restaurant and only had a great experience once at breakfast. We have now decided this is not the place for us. It seems there is no leadership and high turnover. Every waitress on the night of this incident had not stars on their aprons. I questioned the manager on duty and he stated they were all newer that's why they are on nights. It was obvious that night that the cooks were new also. This experience was a train wreck for the get go. read more

The tea (both sweet and unsweet) was some of the best we've ever had, and the Saturday special - Fried Pork Chops, were cooked perfectly and very tender. We chose collards and those wonderful apples as sides and they were perfect! In fact, those were the meatiest collards I've ever had. Zac was attentive and brought more tea just as we were going to ask, and made our time there enjoyable. we had such a great experience at this cracker barrel. we came on a saturday around 11/11:30 and were able to be seated right away (for a table of 2). throughout our meal we had multiple people come check on us and ask if we needed anything in a very genuine way. it felt super homey and comforting. we both got the mommas pancake breakfast (one with smoked sausage & one with bacon). the pancakes were unlike any ive ever had before. they were almost like crispy on the edges outside but super fluffy and soft on the inside. we also split the hasbrown casserole loaded tots those were very unique but delicious too! read more
