I went to Cover 3 for the first time today to have lunch with a friend that I hadn't seen in about a year and a half. I knew that they are a "sports bar," so I was really expecting the interior to look a lot more like, say, Third Base, but I wasn't disappointment though. It was really comfortable and warm, lots of comfortable seating and it looks like a great place for large groups. Maybe I've just gotten used to thinking of sports bars in terms of Third Base, but I didn't really feel like there were enough TVs, or that the TVs that they did have were close enough to a lot of the seating (I'm really near-sighted) for me.
I got the Chop House burger, which was alright, but definitely not one of the best I've had in town (NXNW is still my favorite burger in town). Also, the fries that came with it seemed like kind of a rip-off (and a not-as-good) ripoff of the fries at NXNW too, but they were still pretty good.
I got there before my friend, which was a real first for me, and the place was practically empty so the hostess (who is also the event planner for the restaurant) showed me around, which I thought was incredibly nice. The upstairs "sky box" looked really awesome, and I thought it looked like a perfect location and unique space for a pretty sizable gathering. Our waiter was nice, fairly enthusiastic and attentive, and I really, really appreciated how he didn't interrupt us when he could tell that we were in the middle of talking.
But - and this is the biggest but that I have about this place - after the check and we paid, my friend and I sat there for another 20-30 minutes talking and catching up (like, I said, we hadn't seen each other in maybe a year). Now there wasn't anyone waiting to be seated in our waiter's section or I wouldn't have kept taking up the table. But, after we paid out, whoever was in charge of refilling our water and ice tea stopped refilling them. During the last 15ish minutes that we were at the table, both of our glasses were totally empty. Like I said, if there had been other folks waiting and our waiter could have turned that table, that would be a totally different situation. I know this refilling-issue is not major and it was not ultimately a factor in determining the rating I gave Cover 3, but it kinda irked me nonetheless. As welcome as I felt when I first got to Cover 3, I felt that unwelcome when I left. Is that ridiculous of me to feel that way? Not refilling the waters after we've paid is a huge pet peeve of mine, but am I being unreasonable in even having that as one of my pet peeves?
At any rate, I think this place would be a great spot to grab a beer and maybe a bite before catching a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse Village, (their appetizers looked really interesting, although we didn't order one). But I don't think that I would make this place on its own one of my destinations. read more
