I've been here a dozen or so times. It's never been my favorite place, but it's close to my house, convenient no matter what direction my friends are coming from and has loads of parking. The drinks and food are good, but pricey. The place is self-described as "upscale", but it really borders on (and frequently crosses the line into) pretentious. I have felt underdressed here more than once. AT A SPORTS BAR.
What I've noticed about the place is that sports are secondary. It's really a lounge that happens to have televisions. Which doesn't seem to bother the patrons, because I've NEVER seen anyone actually watching sports while I was there.
This place could have skated by as a mediocre spot in my arsenal of responses to the inevitable "where should we go?" forever. Until last night.
A friend and I wanted to watch the Braves/Phillies game, which is always a challenge in Austin because the Rangers and Astros get top billing. But, we figured Cover 3 has a million TVs with no one watching them, so surely they'd accommodate. The hostess was very obliging - even sat us next to the big screen. She informed us that the game was on rain delay, but they'd change the channel as soon as it started. No problem - we ordered overpriced beers and appetizers.
My friend and I checked on the status of the game on our phones. After an hour, play started. We told our waiter, who told the manager, who changed the channel. Before the first batter was even on deck, it started raining again. The manager immediately switched back to SportsCenter. Totally fine - more beer.
After another hour, the game was back on. Again, we ask the waiter to change the channel. Here's where things went bad. I was already annoyed that we had to tell them when the game was on. It seems to me that the staff at a sports bar would pay attention to things like that, especially when they know customers are interested. But, totally forgivable.
What was NOT forgivable: the manager didn't change the channel. My friend and I are following the game on our phones, asking the waiter about getting the game on a television, not seeing the manager anywhere. After the first inning, the waiter says, "I don't think he's going to change it. Do you want your check?" WHAT?! ARE YOU FLIPPING KIDDING ME?! Yes, we want our check (which I have absolutely no intention of paying), and we want to talk to the manager.
Let me pause for a moment. I am never 'that girl' in public. I'm calm, patient and understanding. I let a lot of stuff slide. But I was losing my mind here.
The manager comes back into the dining room, puts the game on, comes over to our table and acts like he doesn't know why we've asked for him. Apparently he stands by his decision to not put the game on. He says he "got tired of waiting" so he found something else to put on. Listen, guy - we got tired of waiting, too! But what we did while we waited FOR TWO HOURS was spend money on food and drinks at your bar. Put the flipping game on!
My friend, in an attempt to diffuse the situation, says, "Well, it ended like we wanted it to. Thank you very much." The manager says, "Psh - of course it did." And walked away. Cheeky!
We stayed through the extra-innings ballgame and spent more money on overpriced beer. We ended up being the last customers out of the bar. We gave our very gracious waiter a nice tip (mostly because he has to put up with that manager every night), but we will never spend another dime at Cover 3. (I later learned that the game was on at Aussie's. I'll be going there to watch my baseball from now on.) read more
