Pleasantly surprised by this place! I dropped by here when a lot of other brunch restaurants down the street were packed full with lines out the door. They were able to seat my party of 4 promptly on a Saturday afternoon. I got the sashimi tacos with waffle fries, and the tacos came with hearty portions of sashimi. The Cove House in La Jolla is a gem. It's hard not to love a joint when it's located in one of the most beautiful places on earth, but it's a great local find. It's a block off the ocean with a chill local vibe. The food is solid, but the cocktails were surprisingly complex. We ended up at the bar chatting up one of the bartenders that is an absolute pro. After pouring me a delicious cocktail (I can't remember the name but I think it's Mermaid's Tail) he gave us a ton of recommendations for cocktail joints in the area. Mermaid's Tail is a tiki-style recipe with coconut rum, cream of coconut, pineapple, strawberry and lime. It was perfect for the beach vibe after walking along the ocean watching and checking out all the seals sunning themselves. There are a ton of upscale places in La Jolla, but finding a casual chill place like Cove House was perfect for enjoying a mellow sunny afternoon. I made the mistake of trusting the picture uploaded on Yelp by the owner of this restaurant. The veggie bowl I received was no where resembling what they uploaded. My bowl was greasy, all the ingredients were overcooked, almost 50% mushrooms, and tasted very salty. It was such a disappointing meal that I could barely finish it. Additionally, our server got pulled to do bartending which left my party struggling to track down who would take care of our payment. The restaurant was technically closed, but there were still plenty of people inside eating and drinking, and she was standing there chatting with several of them. I was feeling extremely lightheaded and simply asked, very politely, "Hi there, I'm so sorry, I know you're closed, but I'm feeling really lightheaded. Could I have some water?" She gave me a dirty look, said absolutely nothing, and went to get a cup of water with obvious attitude. When she came back, she handed it to me without saying a word. I thanked her politely and loudly enough for her to hear, and she still said nothing. I then had to repeat myself and said, "I said I appreciate it," and only then did she finally respond, "Yeah, you're good." What kind of treatment is that? Yes, the restaurant was closed, but there were still customers there, and my request was hardly unreasonable. If this is the kind of attitude this establishment allows from its employees, that's good to know. I'll absolutely be letting friends and family know to avoid this place. read more

For our meals we ordered the stone crab benny and the veggie bowl with tofu. The stone crab benny was one of the best dishes I've ever had, the crab was very good, the biscuit was light and fluffy, the gravy had good flavor to it, and the eggs were cooked perfect. We sat outside in what felt like a laid-back beach house setting, overlooking La Jolla Cove. Between the palm trees, ocean air, and views of the water, it was hard to beat the atmosphere. Nicole was our server and she was excellent. She knew the menu well, gave solid recommendations, and was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. She suggested the Nics Nogg --an overproof rum eggnog--and it absolutely delivered. Well balanced, rich, and boozy in the best way. You could definitely taste the rum without it overpowering the drink. We also took her recommendation on the crème brûlée French toast, and it was outstanding. Thick-cut brioche with a creamy brûlée topping that melted right into the toast, paired perfectly with fresh berries. Easily one of the best dishes we've had in a while. Went to Cove House in La Jolla with a big group after running the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in San Diego and this place was legit a solid choice to eat after. I totally get why it has so many reviews, the food was actually really good and had great flavor. I ended up getting the Cove Burger cooked medium rare and it was absolutely fire. Super juicy, flavorful, and the fries were crispy with some solid seasoning. The brussel sprouts were alright but honestly lacked flavor and just felt kinda flat. The shrimp though was a huge win, super juicy and cooked right which is always a nice surprise since shrimp can easily be dry. The chicken tinga tacos were tasty but pretty small, wish they were a little bigger for the price. French toast got wiped out so quick I barely got a second look at it, but from the bite I had it was definitely worth ordering again. We also got the shrimp aquachile which was bomb, fresh and tangy with a good kick, but the tortilla chips it came with were stale and tasted like they had been sitting for days which kinda threw it off.
