Aesthetically beautiful nestled in the heart of LA JOLLA. It's very dreamy and perfect for a morning breakfast. The food was phenomenal and the service was great.
Sugar & Scribe is a charming brunch spot in the heart of La Jolla with a cozy atmosphere and friendly service. I ordered the Morning Glow Skillet with added flank steak, and it was flavorful and satisfying. The sweet potato hash paired well with the perfectly cooked eggs, and the steak was tender. I also enjoyed the Cupcake Latte, which was fun, sweet, and topped with whipped cream and edible glitter. We ended our meal by sharing the Blueberry Pancake, and it was the highlight. It was light, fluffy, and topped with fresh blueberries, blueberry compote, white chocolate mousse, and a touch of edible glitter. The only reason for four stars is the higher prices and the wait during busy brunch hours. Overall, it's a great spot for a special brunch.
This was are first time here, a big line it took a bit to wait to put our name Then it was 20 min wait by phone So we walk around and found a cute shop We walked back and we were the next after the people ahead of. We were sat up stairs and very cute inside Very floral with velvet chairs very cute and good service too. Food was a kickin Karina burrito And I had the loaded blueberry oats I enjoyed chai, almonds & blueberries with a big bowl loaded. We enjoyed the food But this was when it changed As I was waiting in line for the restroom I'm watching 2 girls making drinks One of them dropped a cap on the floor and picked it up and put it back on the bottle without washing it and acted like it was fine I looked at the floor it was dirty!!!!!! I couldn't believe what I saw. I was glad I didn't order a coffee or champagne It was a whip cream metal cap that was on the floor
What a fantastic gem in La Jolla just outside of San Diego. The brunch was superb. The service was excellent and the decor was so whimsical and fun. We enjoyed a meal with family catching up after a couple years, we were not rushed, the seating was comfortable and the food selection was excellent. It was hard to make a decision for my meal because everything sounded good with a fun twist. Lots of sparkles, glitter, flavor and fun. Don't skip out on the bakery items on your way out. The cookie selection was delicious. Try the pistachio cloud coffee it was delicious.
We enjoyed our brunch at Sugar and Scribe in La Jolla, CA. This was my second time dining at this restaurant and was as delicious as the first time. Chef Maeve Rochford, the owner of Sugar & Scribe won Season 2 of Food Network's Holiday Baking Championship. She is also known for competing on Food Network's Beat Bobby Flay and Kids Baking Championship. We recommend trying the following: *Butter Poached Lobster Benedict with Poached eggs, Maine Lobster, Arugula, Parsley hollandaise with side of potatoes and bacon. *Blueberry Love Pancakes with blueberry compote, snow sugar and white chocolate mousse. Both orders were excellent 5/5 stars. I tried the Horchata Latte but couldn't really taste the horchata and wasn't sweet enough for me. I wouldn't order this latte again, but maybe y'all would enjoy the flavor better. The restaurant has outdoor seating with heating lamps and welcomes well behaved dogs in their outdoor patio. We had excellent customer service and look forward to coming back! Give this place a try! Happy Yelping :)
Great coffee drinks to choose from. We really like the ginger coffee. If there's a way, there's some great pastries to choose from me. Really enjoyed the rhubarb as well as the Berry pastry. Favorite breakfast where the goat cheese and mushroom toast and their famous blueberry pancakes. Breakfast burrito was fairly ordinary. The meat could've been more tender.. The lobster eggs Benedict was a little too rich for me and the quality of the lobster could've been better. Service was great and friendly Ambience is charming.
A Pretty Place That's Lost Some of Its Magic Sugar & Scribe has always been my go-to spot when my dad visits. The ambiance is genuinely stunning, with beautiful details and photo ops around every corner. It photographs like a dream and the vibe is unmatched for impressing out-of-towners. This time I finally brought my husband along for his first visit, and unfortunately the timing wasn't ideal. The menu had a major overhaul a couple of weeks prior, and while some familiar favorites remain, most of the dishes are new and the execution felt like it was still finding its footing. My usual blueberry pancakes were a disappointment: sparse toppings and slightly burnt edges on cakes that are usually a highlight. Their signature lattes are still delicious, though I always wish the size was a bit more generous for the price. My husband ordered the Big Bad Bird, which came out impressively large. So large, in fact, that we later discovered the waiter had accidentally added extra chicken to the order (which showed up on the bill). We can't fairly judge the normal portion, but he did note the hot honey flavor didn't quite deliver on the promise of its name. Bottom line: Sugar & Scribe is still a fantastic experience destination. Bring your visitors, snap your photos, order a latte, and soak in the atmosphere.
Good, but not as good as I remember. The pancakes were good, I just wish I would've ordered the plain ones instead of the Blueberry Love ones. The Blueberry Love pancakes are more for kids I think. I don't like the presentation of the blueberry pancakes in the skillet. I think it takes away from how special they are.
What an adorable spot to eat! It's definitely a place I'd take my girlfriends or nieces to. The whole restaurant is decorated with flowers from the inside out, it feels so girly and whimsical. Inside, they even have a mini shop filled with cutesy items my niece would probably beg me to buy. We were seated outside on the patio on a beautiful day. My childhood best friend and I decided to order several dishes to share: Spicy Shakshuka Skillet - I rarely see this dish on menus, so I had to try it. It wasn't very spicy, but it was still delicious, especially with their sourdough bread. Wild Mushroom Truffle Toast - I really enjoyed this, but I was a little disappointed that I couldn't detect much truffle flavor. Blueberry Love Pancakes - Yum! We both scarfed these down. The pancakes were light, fluffy, and not overly sweet. Service was wonderful, such a friendly, helpful staff with warm smiles. I'm looking forward to coming back to try the chilaquiles next time!

There's a reason why the Blueberry Love pancakes are plastered all over their pictures on Yelp; they are phenomenal. The Shakshuka was also very delicious, and had a nice little kick, but not at all overpowering the other flavors in the dish. We (party of 2) were seated within 25 mins on a busy Sunday morning, and were lucky to be seated inside. I had no idea how stylish and chic it was until we walked in! I was in awe by all the cute, and fun decor. We are incredibly lucky to have such awesome places like this in San Diego! Can't wait for my return :)
I have had to have been to this place atleast 20 times and it's always a must when in La Jolla. I was so excited for my visit today, but I was so disappointed when I sat down and realized that the menu had to completely changed. Both the things that I really liked were no longer offered. I ordered the birria skillet isn't still wanting to try it and hoping for the best and was extremely disappointed. It was more stew chucks of meat then birria and didn't have any sauce to incorporate everything is, leaving it pretty bland. The server let us know that the menu changed about two months ago and that a lot of the great items were taken off the menu. I'm not sure why this happened but it may have been a mistake. Now for the good, as always service was great and it's the cutest little restaurant. Everyone is always so warm and welcoming and happy to have you. I ordered the horchata latte which was amazing as always, and we got a s'mores hot chocolate which was always wonderful. The peach waffles were very yummy as well reminding me of peach cobbler! I will never give up on this place but hoping the can revert the menu to what it once was! Bring back the naughty skillet
10/10 complaints--everything was great! The food was delicious, the coffee was amazing, and the service was excellent. The only downside was how crowded the seating felt. It was pretty tight, like I was dining with the people behind, next to, and in front of me. Other than that, I loved everything. They have a huge selection of coffee, plus matcha and other drinks. The food menu also has tons of options. My best friend recommended the chilaquiles, and they did not disappoint at all. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and I would definitely come back. Go check them out--you can thank me later!

We originally came to check out Blue Whale and The Cottage but with the long waits they had, we walked across the street to Sugar & Scribe and got right in! My nephew got the brownie hot chocolate and it was impressive! I got the matcha latte with vanilla read more
Came here for brunch on our anniversary. Didn't have reservations so we waited about 40 mins., but we took advantage to walk around and check out the cute shops in the surrounding area. When our table was ready we got seated at the most perfect and cutest table. Our waiter instantly greeted us and took our drink order and went through recommendations. My husband ordered the lobster Benedict and I ordered chilaquiles with birria, which they are some of the best I have ever had. The vanilla lattes were very good as well. Our waiter was amazing, knowledgeable, and very attentive. The restaurant is very cute on the outside as well as the inside! Even though we didn't try their pastries they looked amazing! The restaurant also sells gifts, trinkets and more. We will definitely be back again when we are in the area. read more
After doing some research on brunch spots, Sugar and Scribe came up. The reviews were mixed but the photos of the food looked really good and the ambiance looked super cute, so we decided to check it out. The area is right by the La Joya beach so it was a bit busy and we couldn't find parking in the parking lot they had but luckily there was plenty of parking not too far away. Sugar and Scribe has a very inviting decor and atmosphere. They have a very colorful patio and super cute interior as well. It had a very spring/summery vibe with all the beautiful flower decorations. When we arrived we were lucky that there was no wait, and we got seated right away. Our server was sweet and attentive and came out order right away. I decided to get the fried hot honey chicken and biscuits and my boyfriend got the fried chicken and waffles. Unfortunately, my fried chicken and biscuits were way too salty and I struggled to taste any hot honey. It just tasted like watered down tobasco sauce, which was disappointing! My boyfriend said he loved his fried chicken and waffles. He also thought my chicken wasn't too salty, but I felt it was for me personally. So I guess it might be a preference thing. Overall, we had a good experience there. I would give them another shot and maybe try something else next time! read more

Super cutesy brunch spot in La Jolla. The wait can be long on a weekend, but we got lucky and were seated right away as a party of 2. They have a "hangry" option where you can order a pastry first while you wait for your main entree (which i thought was a genius idea). Most of the pastries were sold out by 11AM, so we ordered an almond croissant- warm and buttery, with a delicious almond filling. The coffee is from Dark Horse so you know it's going to be great. The rest of the food came out surprisingly fast. The chilaquiles were standard- chips, sauce, onions, egg. The sauce had a kick of spice that I appreciated and the tortilla chips didn't get overly soggy. The shakshuka had a great roasted flavor and the fresh bread was heavenly. Overall, was very impressed by the service and food. Will definitely be back! read more
If you're looking for a brunch spot in La Jolla, Sugar & Scribe has you covered. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and a separate bakery counter. I came with a few friends to celebrate a birthday and a second time with my husband on a Sunday morning, after a beach walk. They don't take reservations and you must have your entire party ready to be seated or you will have to wait. The server was attentive and friendly. The restaurant is SUPER cute and offers a nice ambiance; Food was SOOOOO good. I had a healthy skillet and their infamous S & S pancakes. You guys have to try this place I will be stopping by again soon. read more
Service was great and decor/Atmosphere was really nice. The outdoor seating area is beautiful. Great for medium to small groups. We ordered the Mushroom Truffle Toast w/poached egg and an order of their Blueberry Pancakes. Everything tasted good but I personally wasn't that happy with the meal. My guest on the other hand loved it and scarfed everything down and wanted more. My Bloody Mary tasted delicious but came with a partially rotting piece of Celery that I noticed midway thru that turned me off (see pic). Based on service and ambience I would give it another try. Also the coffee and pastry bar inside was awesome. read more
I was really excited to try Sugar & Scribe after hearing so many good things about it. The restaurant is super cute, the decor is charming, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The drinks were also fun and beautifully presented. The food, however, was just okay for me. The chicken biscuit and gravy was definitely the highlight and I'd give it a 4/5. The blueberry pancakes were the biggest disappointment. They were much drier than I expected, and while I understand the glitter topping is part of what makes them unique, it just wasn't for me. Overall, the vibes and service were great, but the food didn't quite live up to the hype. I'd give it a 3.5/5. Not a bad experience at all, just not somewhere I'd personally go out of my way to visit again. read more

Sugar and Scribe was the cutest brunch spot. Not only is it a brunch spot, but inside there is a bakery counter, coffee shop and gift/retail section. The best of multiple worlds! My best friends and I went on a Sunday around 1pm, and the wait to get seated was around 20 minutes. That was not bad AT ALL, especially for how beautiful it was! The restaurant does not do reservations, as a note. As for food, the steak and eggs were delicious. It came with thick toasted rustic bread, which was perfect to dip in the yolk. One of my best friends got the lobster benedict, and I wish I tried it because it looked amazing. There was a good amount of lobster and the poached eggs looked perfect. The mimosas were also very lovely and came with a little gummy bear. The guava mimosa is not on the menu as a regular mimosa, but part of the mimosa flight, and I wish I ordered 5. The main thing that was not too memorable is the service. Our original waitress was leaving, and since my friends and I were sitting outside towards the hostess stand, that's when she told us she was off and someone else was going to take care of us. read more
One of the best brunch restaurants of all time. I sincerely mean it. This place includes full-service dining as well as a front counter for their in-house bakery. There is a huge outdoor patio and some indoor seating. Plus, it's pretty cool that this is a dog-friendly restaurant that even allows your dogs to be inside. Everything I ate here was super delicious and beautifully presented. My husband and I shared the following plates: Emerald Isle Waffles: 2 crispy golden brown waffles plus 3 various side sauces: classic maple syrup, bourbon peaches, and elderberry white chocolate mousse. Oh my gosh, the elderberry mousse was to die for. This dish is so indulgent with the perfect blend of creamy and fruity flavors. You Choose Benedict: we chose sausage as the main component for this benedict. It was an excellent combination with the perfectly poached eggs, fresh arugula, rich hollandaise sauce, and toasty english muffins. The side of soft, scalloped-style potatoes really surprised me with how amazing it tasted. Sligo Scramble: fluffy scrambled eggs, goat cheese that adds a creamy tanginess, savory irish cheddar cheese, fresh chives, and 2 pieces of crispy artisanal bread. I liked that there was a side of a yummy jam to go along with the bread. This was super satisfying to eat, as the dish did not feel too heavy. Highly recommend coming here for anyone that is in La Jolla. They do not accept reservations unfortunately. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Make sure to check in with the host located outside. I think I was lucky to not have any kind of wait, even though the restaurant looked fairly busy. read more
Sugar and Scribe, just like the name, this restaurant is just as sweet and sugary. Super adorable decorations all around, felt like a candy shop with a sweet like aroma when you walk in. My wife and I came around noon and were seated immediately despite the restaurant being super busy. (Friday Brunch) This restaurant is combined with a large outdoor seating area, indoor drinks/barista shop, merch/deco shop, and a stairs up to a dining area where the kitchen is located. I noticed that most people enjoy being seated outdoors as it wasn't too cold. Parking situation here is tricky I'd say, but you can find residential/street parking nearby and take a walk over. Watch out for metered parking and certain reserved ones. Staff here is friendly, efficient, and sufficient enough for a super busy restaurant. Very speedy overall when it came to taking orders and serving the food. Regular check ins too even though it was busy which was a nice touch. Food took about 15 minutes to come out, fairly quick since the restaurant was extremely busy. -- What We Ordered -- Sligo Scramble ($20.50) Filled with scrambled eggs, goat cheese, Irish cheddar, chives, and toast. This was the perfect dish to start the brunch. The jam provided is perfect for the toast. Eggs were cooked perfectly, and the potato slices were excellent overall. Not very salty and a good compliment to the scramble. The toast itself is a bit hard but it was still fairly tasty. You Choose Benedict ($22) Couldn't decide on which benedict to order, decided on the custom one. Once again, the potato slices were amazing, presentation is pretty standard for a benedict. Very tasty and a staple to the restaurant. Emerald Isles Waffles ($20.50) The waffles came with two spreads and syrup. - Bourbon peaches - Elderberry White Chocolate Mousse Waffle itself without the spread is already tasty, but with the spreads, it taste even better. My personal favorite spread is definitely the Elderberry, mixes extremely well with the savor style of the waffle, and with the berry, it's not super sweet which is great for the taste balance. It's very addicting and just overall one of the best waffles I've ever tasted. Highly recommend Overall, a wonderful brunch spot. My wife and I absolutely loved their food, especially the waffles. Very impressed overall with the food, service, and overall vibe. Super casual but also very cute. It was the perfect meal to start our Friday morning. Will definitely be back whenever We're back in the La Jolla area. A absolute GEM to the city. read more
Saw that Sugar and Scribe was ranked on Yelp's Top Places to Eat in 2023 so I had to try it! I actually tried it in 2023 and loved it so much, I got the Classic Benedict and it was amazing with a side of their potatoes which was in a little pot and the potatoes were sliced thinly like au gratin potatoes. It was a simple benedict with bacon, poached egg, arugula on an english muffin. My whole family was super happy with the meal, the service, waittime wasn't too long too. Coming back in 2025 my family was excited once again. We all got the same dishes but it just didn't hit the same as we remembered. Not sure if the quality fell off but also the potatoes weren't in that ceramic container and the portion went down as well. We hopefully will be back but not sure after this visit anymore. If I reviewed it in 2023/2024 I would've gave it a 5/5 but im borderline on a 3/5 to be honest. read more

Chef Maeve, a Food Network Holiday Baking Champion, crafts innovative beautiful cakes, pastries, savory croissants, cookies, and other delights which you can access easily inside the restaurant for to-go / takeout orders. And, there is also a full coffee bar, brunch / lunch menu and alcoholic drinks menu (mimosas, bloody mary, beer, wine) so you can fully enjoy her welcoming and joyful establishment. I've enjoyed meals here several times, and each time, I've left happy and satisfied. Her dishes are fresh, interesting, and flavorful, and dining here is an absolute treat. Most folks choose to dine outside, but the interior dining room is also quite a showstopper, and great for photos! Keep in mind that the prices are a bit steep, but IMO they're accurate for the location and quality of what you receive. Today, I simply stopped in for an iced vanilla latte and a savory croissant (feta, ricotta, and spinach). Service was fast and friendly, and I was in and out in less that 5 minutes. My friend also purchased some Mexican Wedding Cookies, and let me tell you, they're fantastic - powdered, lightly sweet, crumbly, and studded with pecans. They're especially delightful with a coffee or tea. :) My latte was also perfect, and I made short work of it. So, I'm just wondering... what are you doing still reading this? Absolutely loved Sugar and Scribe. From the moment we walked in, the space felt so warm and inviting. The decor is beyond cute. Bright, cozy, and thoughtfully designed, it instantly puts you in a good mood. What really made the experience special was the staff. Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we ended up chatting so much with them that it felt more like visiting friends than just grabbing food. You can really tell they care about creating a great experience, not just serving customers. Between the beautiful atmosphere, genuine hospitality, and overall positive energy, Sugar and Scribe is such a gem. I'll definitely be back and recommending it to everyone. read more
We came in as a group of four on a Thursday morning at 9 am. There was no wait and the place was nearly empty. Also, they are kid friendly with highchairs! The service was great. Our waiter was friendly, suggestive, and fast. We tried a few coffees, the unicorn hot chocolate, the birria chilaquiles (recommended by our waiter -- great recommendation), pancakes, and the fried chicken biscuit skillet. Still amazing! They keep on upgrading their menu with delicious food. Must try the Truffle Mushroom Toast and the Lobster Benedict. Their side of potatoes are incredible. I subbed my side for a pancake it was cooked to perfection. Service was excellent & the place is decorated specifically for women but my husband enjoyed it as well. read more
We were in the area and step out upon this breakfast place. It is a super cute spot in La Jolla, and there are lots of decorations for the indoor and outdoor seating. We were immediately sat on a saturday morning inside. We ordered a horchata latte, the truffle mushroom toast, and the basic breakfast. Everything tasted great. When the truffle toast arrived, I could smell the truffle, but it wasn't a strong of a taste as I thought it would be. I'll try to be nice as the service and owner(?) were working hard and did their best to provide a great experience. There's definitely something here but desperately needs a "spring cleaning" to clear out the issues they have at the moment. The service and general food quality were great, however I cannot say it was amazing as the plating didn't make sense and was a chore to dissect the hockey puck of a biscuit they put in a 2 inch deep dish. There is the wait to find parking which is understandable, but a substanial one just to get your name on the list. The food came out after some time and was luke warm. This place is being critically bottlenecked by the small size and could benefit from a second location. It was clear to see that fitting extra tables to acccomodate those who want to visit is not working out and clearly hinders the staff as they have to wait for customers wandering and why is the kitchen only accessible by stairs? The energy the restaurant and staff exhibited definitely saved the trip we took down here but there are other options in 2026, so be ready. read more

Came here to have breakfast and celebrate a birthday. I had a pistachio latte that I really liked and would come back for. The food was good as well. The floral decor and the tableware is pretty. It's a cute/cozy atmosphere that's aesthetic for taking photos. Unfortunately, it's busy here even on regular mornings and afternoons, so service is very slow. read more

Food: 3 Service: 3.5 Ambiance: 4 Strong 3.5 stars! Sugar and Scribe is a quaint little brunch spot right in downtown La Jolla. We went on a weekday morning, so it wasn't crowded at all, which was really nice. We were seated outside on a beautiful day, and it made for a very relaxing brunch experience. I started with a turmeric latte, which was very turmeric forward, but warm and comforting. I ordered the steak and eggs, though I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't have the steak cooked the way I wanted. It was still yummy, but it didn't completely blow me away. One friend ordered the avocado toast, and another ordered a Benedict, and both dishes were just okay. The food across the board was really aesthetically pleasing and beautifully presented, but the taste just didn't quite match the visuals, even though everything was still enjoyable and tasty. The service was good overall. Everyone was friendly and sweet, and we felt well taken care of. One of the highlights for me was the ambience. The hanging flower décor is really pretty, and inside the restaurant there's a bake shop filled with lots of tempting goodies. Overall, we had a great time. This is more of a place you go to enjoy the atmosphere and spend time with friends rather than for mind blowing food. After breakfast, we took a nice walk around the nearby park and beach, which made the outing even better. I'd recommend Sugar and Scribe as a chill brunch spot in La Jolla. read more

Came for a birthday celebration with 11 people. We came at 1 pm on a Saturday and were seated almost immediately. Service was good, they checked on us frequently. They even offered us 2 complimentary plates of dessert at the end of our meal bc they were closing. quiche- crust was crispy and flaky, egg/cheese interior was soft and it paired really well with the chewy mushrooms and sweet/oniony leeks. read more
If you're looking for a fun and unique restaurant, this is it. Great place for breakfast / brunch / lunch. Good for dates or friend / family outings. Feeling the vibes? Think casual, but feel free to dress up a bit more. Need some sugar? There's a bunch of unique hot chocolates so pick your poison. Be warned, they contain a lot of sugary goodness. Have a dog in the family? Bring them along. This is a dog friendly place. Can't decide where to sit? Don't worry there's inside and outside seating. Bring the party, but not too big. There's a party limit of 8 for a table together. If your party is larger you could always decide who you like more and split your party. Got parking? There's a plaza for parking but it's pretty small and limited so highly suggest looking to the street. Feeling full? There's some small business stores locally for a walk after. This is such a cute restaurant in La Jolla. I went with a friend for breakfast and had a really good time. I got the pancakes and she got the French toast and both were really good. She tried the glitter bomb mimosa but didn't love it, the glitter kind of threw her off. The vibes are super cute and the hosts are really kind and welcoming. I will say it is on the pricier side, especially the pastries, but the decor throughout is really nice and adds to the experience. read more
First off, this place has cute decor for the girlies. That's what my girl said. It's true, I was surrounded by flowers. Service was speedy, but the whole restaurant was busy so our server got us what we needed while keeping up with others. Onto what we consumed: Steak and eggs: Eggs were cooked well, there was one slice of potato that was overcooked to dryness. The flank steak, which it is a tough cut of meat, was too tough for my liking. The seasoning and chimichurri was good, though. Bloody Mary: delicious, comes with green bean, asparagus, and olives. It's a cute brunch spot but the food didn't wow me. Drinks and decor saved it. This place is a good time with a bunch of friends. read more

Do you take reservations?
From my past experience....no, they do not. You usually have to put your name on a waitlist and your entire party has to be present before getting sat.
What is the parking situation like?
Tight. The Lot gets full and street parking is almost nonexistent.
Is there less of a wait closer to noon than 10 on a weekend or is it about the same?
The wait is the same! And if the wait is longer than when they anticipate closing, they won't put you on the list.
Is it kid friendly ? Do they have high chairs for kiddos?
Yes they're totally kid ready and very nice about it
Do you serve, gluten-free pancakes, waffles, or gluten-free French toast?
They unfortunately do not, however they do have a gluten free chocolate muffin and other gluten free options on the menu!
Is the bbq in the naughty skillet sweet?
No, it's definitely more savory and a little spicy. Nothing too crazy though.
Is this place good to study at?
I would say no, you are better off studying at the living room.
