We enjoyed our brunch at Sugar and Scribe in La Jolla, CA. This was my second time dining at this restaurant and was as delicious as the first time. Chef Maeve Rochford, the owner of Sugar & Scribe won Season 2 of Food Network's Holiday Baking Championship. She is also known for competing on Food Network's Beat Bobby Flay and Kids Baking Championship. We recommend trying the following: *Butter Poached Lobster Benedict with Poached eggs, Maine Lobster, Arugula, Parsley hollandaise with side of potatoes and bacon. *Blueberry Love Pancakes with blueberry compote, snow sugar and white chocolate mousse. Both orders were excellent 5/5 stars. I tried the Horchata Latte but couldn't really taste the horchata and wasn't sweet enough for me. I wouldn't order this latte again, but maybe y'all would enjoy the flavor better. The restaurant has outdoor seating with heating lamps and welcomes well behaved dogs in their outdoor patio. This was are first time here, a big line it took a bit to wait to put our name Then it was 20 min wait by phone So we walk around and found a cute shop We walked back and we were the next after the people ahead of. I was really excited to try Sugar & Scribe after hearing so many good things about it. The restaurant is super cute, the decor is charming, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The drinks were also fun and beautifully presented. The food, however, was just okay for me. The chicken biscuit and gravy was definitely the highlight and I'd give it a 4/5. The blueberry pancakes were the biggest disappointment. They were much drier than I expected, and while I understand the glitter topping is part of what makes them unique, it just wasn't for me. Overall, the vibes and service were great, but the food didn't quite live up to the hype. I'd give it a 3.5/5. The big bad bird and biscuit is really rich and filling, with 2 biscuits topped with gravy and fried chicken. Truffle toast is really nice with deep earthy richness of the truffle oil, probably would get that again. read more

A Pretty Place That's Lost Some of Its Magic Sugar & Scribe has always been my go-to spot when my dad visits. The ambiance is genuinely stunning, with beautiful details and photo ops around every corner. It photographs like a dream and the vibe is unmatched for impressing out-of-towners. This time I finally brought my husband along for his first visit, and unfortunately the timing wasn't ideal. The menu had a major overhaul a couple of weeks prior, and while some familiar favorites remain, most of the dishes are new and the execution felt like it was still finding its footing. My usual blueberry pancakes were a disappointment: sparse toppings and slightly burnt edges on cakes that are usually a highlight. Their signature lattes are still delicious, though I always wish the size was a bit more generous for the price. My husband ordered the Big Bad Bird, which came out impressively large. So large, in fact, that we later discovered the waiter had accidentally added extra chicken to the order (which showed up on the bill). We can't fairly judge the normal portion, but he did note the hot honey flavor didn't quite deliver on the promise of its name. Bottom line: Sugar & Scribe is still a fantastic experience destination. Bring your visitors, snap your photos, order a latte, and soak in the atmosphere. read more

There's a reason why the Blueberry Love pancakes are plastered all over their pictures on Yelp; they are phenomenal. The Shakshuka was also very delicious, and had a nice little kick, but not at all overpowering the other flavors in the dish. We (party of 2) were seated within 25 mins on a busy Sunday morning, and were lucky to be seated inside. I had no idea how stylish and chic it was until we walked in! I have had to have been to this place atleast 20 times and it's always a must when in La Jolla. I was so excited for my visit today, but I was so disappointed when I sat down and realized that the menu had to completely changed. Both the things that I really liked were no longer offered. I ordered the birria skillet isn't still wanting to try it and hoping for the best and was extremely disappointed. It was more stew chucks of meat then birria and didn't have any sauce to incorporate everything is, leaving it pretty bland. The server let us know that the menu changed about two months ago and that a lot of the great items were taken off the menu. I'm not sure why this happened but it may have been a mistake. Now for the good, as always service was great and it's the cutest little restaurant. Everyone is always so warm and welcoming and happy to have you. I ordered the horchata latte which was amazing as always, and we got a s'mores hot chocolate which was always wonderful. The peach waffles were very yummy as well reminding me of peach cobbler! What an adorable spot to eat! It's definitely a place I'd take my girlfriends or nieces to. The whole restaurant is decorated with flowers from the inside out, it feels so girly and whimsical. Inside, they even have a mini shop filled with cutesy items my niece would probably beg me to buy. We were seated outside on the patio on a beautiful day. My childhood best friend and I decided to order several dishes to share: Spicy Shakshuka Skillet - I rarely see this dish on menus, so I had to try it. It wasn't very spicy, but it was still delicious, especially with their sourdough bread. Wild Mushroom Truffle Toast - I really enjoyed this, but I was a little disappointed that I couldn't detect much truffle flavor. Blueberry Love Pancakes - Yum! We both scarfed these down. 10/10 complaints--everything was great! The food was delicious, the coffee was amazing, and the service was excellent. The only downside was how crowded the seating felt. It was pretty tight, like I was dining with the people behind, next to, and in front of me. Other than that, I loved everything. They have a huge selection of coffee, plus matcha and other drinks. The food menu also has tons of options. My best friend recommended the chilaquiles, and they did not disappoint at all. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and I would definitely come back. Super cutesy brunch spot in La Jolla. The wait can be long on a weekend, but we got lucky and were seated right away as a party of 2. They have a "hangry" option where you can order a pastry first while you wait for your main entree (which i thought was a genius idea). Most of the pastries were sold out by 11AM, so we ordered an almond croissant- warm and buttery, with a delicious almond filling. The coffee is from Dark Horse so you know it's going to be great. The rest of the food came out surprisingly fast. The chilaquiles were standard- chips, sauce, onions, egg. The sauce had a kick of spice that I appreciated and the tortilla chips didn't get overly soggy. The shakshuka had a great roasted flavor and the fresh bread was heavenly. Sugar and Scribe was the cutest brunch spot. Not only is it a brunch spot, but inside there is a bakery counter, coffee shop and gift/retail section. The best of multiple worlds! My best friends and I went on a Sunday around 1pm, and the wait to get seated was around 20 minutes. That was not bad AT ALL, especially for how beautiful it was! The restaurant does not do reservations, as a note. As for food, the steak and eggs were delicious. It came with thick toasted rustic bread, which was perfect to dip in the yolk. One of my best friends got the lobster benedict, and I wish I tried it because it looked amazing. There was a good amount of lobster and the poached eggs looked perfect. The mimosas were also very lovely and came with a little gummy bear. The guava mimosa is not on the menu as a regular mimosa, but part of the mimosa flight, and I wish I ordered 5. The main thing that was not too memorable is the service. My guest on the other hand loved it and scarfed everything down and wanted more. My Bloody Mary tasted delicious but came with a partially rotting piece of Celery that I noticed midway thru that turned me off (see pic). Based on service and ambience I would give it another try. There is a huge outdoor patio and some indoor seating. Plus, it's pretty cool that this is a dog-friendly restaurant that even allows your dogs to be inside. My husband and I shared the following plates: Emerald Isle Waffles: 2 crispy golden brown waffles plus 3 various side sauces: classic maple syrup, bourbon peaches, and elderberry white chocolate mousse. Oh my gosh, the elderberry mousse was to die for. This dish is so indulgent with the perfect blend of creamy and fruity flavors. You Choose Benedict: we chose sausage as the main component for this benedict. It was an excellent combination with the perfectly poached eggs, fresh arugula, rich hollandaise sauce, and toasty english muffins. The side of soft, scalloped-style potatoes really surprised me with how amazing it tasted. Sligo Scramble: fluffy scrambled eggs, goat cheese that adds a creamy tanginess, savory irish cheddar cheese, fresh chives, and 2 pieces of crispy artisanal bread. I liked that there was a side of a yummy jam to go along with the bread. This was super satisfying to eat, as the dish did not feel too heavy. We came in as a group of four on a Thursday morning at 9 am. There was no wait and the place was nearly empty. Also, they are kid friendly with highchairs! The service was great. Our waiter was friendly, suggestive, and fast. Came here while on a weekend trip to San Diego and I'm a bit conflicted. They were very busy for Saturday lunch which was expected and we didn't mind waiting for a table. Once we were called to be seated, the hostess let us know where she would be seating us and the servers were wrapping up with the table setup. The hostess then started speaking really rudely to the servers because they were confused about how many people were going to be sitting. We didn't mind the short wait! But she turned to us and scoffed and told us the servers were "not very bright" and she wasn't sure what was so difficult for them. It was a little off putting to hear staff talk to and about each other that way. We then sat down and waited over 10 minutes for someone to take our food order. The server wasn't necessarily rude but she definitely had a no-frills kind of personality that didn't come off as very friendly. We then waited another 45 minutes to receive the food and we were getting antsy and hungry. Once we got the food, I think my friends were less impressed with their dishes and didn't leave super happy. I, for one, REALLY enjoyed my steak and eggs. The portion was generous and the steak was flavorful with perfectly over easy eggs. The real standout for me was the bread that came on the side. OMG I'm still thinking about it. It was pan toasted in butter and had the most amazing flavor and texture. If the staff was a little friendlier, I probably would have asked if I could buy a loaf since I know they also serve as a bakery. And, there is also a full coffee bar, brunch / lunch menu and alcoholic drinks menu (mimosas, bloody mary, beer, wine) so you can fully enjoy her welcoming and joyful establishment. I've enjoyed meals here several times, and each time, I've left happy and satisfied. Her dishes are fresh, interesting, and flavorful, and dining here is an absolute treat. Most folks choose to dine outside, but the interior dining room is also quite a showstopper, and great for photos! Keep in mind that the prices are a bit steep, but IMO they're accurate for the location and quality of what you receive. Today, I simply stopped in for an iced vanilla latte and a savory croissant (feta, ricotta, and spinach). Service was fast and friendly, and I was in and out in less that 5 minutes. My friend also purchased some Mexican Wedding Cookies, and let me tell you, they're fantastic - powdered, lightly sweet, crumbly, and studded with pecans. They're especially delightful with a coffee or tea. :) My latte was also perfect, and I made short work of it. So, I'm just wondering... what are you doing still reading this? Sugar and Scribe, just like the name, this restaurant is just as sweet and sugary. Super adorable decorations all around, felt like a candy shop with a sweet like aroma when you walk in. My wife and I came around noon and were seated immediately despite the restaurant being super busy. (Friday Brunch) This restaurant is combined with a large outdoor seating area, indoor drinks/barista shop, merch/deco shop, and a stairs up to a dining area where the kitchen is located. I noticed that most people enjoy being seated outdoors as it wasn't too cold. Parking situation here is tricky I'd say, but you can find residential/street parking nearby and take a walk over. Watch out for metered parking and certain reserved ones. Staff here is friendly, efficient, and sufficient enough for a super busy restaurant. Very speedy overall when it came to taking orders and serving the food. Regular check ins too even though it was busy which was a nice touch. Food took about 15 minutes to come out, fairly quick since the restaurant was extremely busy. -- What We Ordered -- Sligo Scramble ($20.50) Filled with scrambled eggs, goat cheese, Irish cheddar, chives, and toast. This was the perfect dish to start the brunch. The jam provided is perfect for the toast. Eggs were cooked perfectly, and the potato slices were excellent overall. Not very salty and a good compliment to the scramble. The toast itself is a bit hard but it was still fairly tasty. You Choose Benedict ($22) Couldn't decide on which benedict to order, decided on the custom one. Once again, the potato slices were amazing, presentation is pretty standard for a benedict. Very tasty and a staple to the restaurant. Emerald Isles Waffles ($20.50) The waffles came with two spreads and syrup. - Bourbon peaches - Elderberry White Chocolate Mousse Waffle itself without the spread is already tasty, but with the spreads, it taste even better. My personal favorite spread is definitely the Elderberry, mixes extremely well with the savor style of the waffle, and with the berry, it's not super sweet which is great for the taste balance. It's very addicting and just overall one of the best waffles I've ever tasted. Highly recommend Overall, a wonderful brunch spot. My wife and I absolutely loved their food, especially the waffles. Saw that Sugar and Scribe was ranked on Yelp's Top Places to Eat in 2023 so I had to try it! I actually tried it in 2023 and loved it so much, I got the Classic Benedict and it was amazing with a side of their potatoes which was in a little pot and the potatoes were sliced thinly like au gratin potatoes. It was a simple benedict with bacon, poached egg, arugula on an english muffin. My whole family was super happy with the meal, the service, waittime wasn't too long too. Coming back in 2025 my family was excited once again. We all got the same dishes but it just didn't hit the same as we remembered. Not sure if the quality fell off but also the potatoes weren't in that ceramic container and the portion went down as well. We hopefully will be back but not sure after this visit anymore. If I reviewed it in 2023/2024 I would've gave it a 5/5 but im borderline on a 3/5 to be honest. read more

It was a very mixed bag. This has been on my foodie list for years and I finally made it over there it was a bit disappointing. I was seated in the outdoor "parking lot" area. I would've most definitely had a happier more lovely experience ambiance wise inside where it's so whimsical and pretty. A female server took my drink order and said she would be back for the food order. 25 minutes later I flagged her down and she stated some male server would be my server who I had never seen. At this point, I don't care who it is, I just want to order. It was very awkward. The morning glow was delicious but worth $24 is another question?? There's definitely something here but desperately needs a "spring cleaning" to clear out the issues they have at the moment. The service and general food quality were great, however I cannot say it was amazing as the plating didn't make sense and was a chore to dissect the hockey puck of a biscuit they put in a 2 inch deep dish. There is the wait to find parking which is understandable, but a substanial one just to get your name on the list. The food came out after some time and was luke warm. This place is being critically bottlenecked by the small size and could benefit from a second location. It was clear to see that fitting extra tables to acccomodate those who want to visit is not working out and clearly hinders the staff as they have to wait for customers wandering and why is the kitchen only accessible by stairs? Went here for brunch this morning and was able to get a table right away around 11 AM. They have a great brunch special for $35 that we all ordered from today. I got the bread pudding French toast and it's safe to say it was so yummy and sweet! Everyone wanted a bite of my plate along with their orders. There's a party limit of 8 for a table together. If your party is larger you could always decide who you like more and split your party. Got parking? There's a plaza for parking but it's pretty small and limited so highly suggest looking to the street. Feeling full? There's some small business stores locally for a walk after. I purchased a wedding cake here because it was my wife's favorite bakery. The cake tasting went well and we both loved the mocha latte cake with chocolate latte buttercream. We put in our order a few months in advance and had everything ready for the big day. The wedding comes and we pickup the cake, a small one for 10-12 people, and deliver it to the venue for our reception dinner. The restaurant cuts it and portions it for our small group and that's where the good ends. From the first bite I'm immediately taken back by how unlike it is to the cake we had during the tasting. Instead of being light ,fluffy and full of rich coffee flavor, this cake was dense, bready and didn't taste anything like coffee. It was like the worse carrot cake attempt Ive ever had. We didn't even keep the left overs because it wasn't worth eating anymore. Supremely disappointing considering the cake we had during our tasting was delicious. Guess they don't need to be keep up the quality if you only ever need to get the one wedding cake. Would seriously reconsider ordering a wedding cake here. read more

My Sissy and i went to this cute place in La Jolla and bein a first timer here, i was ooohing and aaahhhing on the menu and their aesthetic is so cute, relaxing. You can even read a book in their restroom! Anyhoo, we ordered steak and eggs served with Yukon gold potatoes and Chimichurri sauce. It was so good! Ask for extra servings of the sauce if you want it slathering your steak!! The Pistachio Cloud Coffee is too cloudy ... meaning a lot of cream. Ask to have less of cream and more coffee. Taking it hot is best also than cold. Then we ordered the Bread French Toast with Bischoff Crumbles. It came with two syrups-maple and caramel. Sooooo soooo good! If you are watching your blood sugar- this isn't for you! The service is great- servers and the Hostess were very attentive. I will go back again and try their other items. We literally just left here. The hostess saw me put a blanket on and had them bring a standing fire pit which was so nice of her and attentive. This place was so esthetically beautiful. My husband loved his steak chilaquiles, and I go the Lox Bagel with a side of potatoes and scrambled eggs and couldn't finish it. The staff is exceptionally nice. Definitely give this place a try. read more

First off, this place has cute decor for the girlies. That's what my girl said. It's true, I was surrounded by flowers. Service was speedy, but the whole restaurant was busy so our server got us what we needed while keeping up with others. Onto what we consumed: Steak and eggs: Eggs were cooked well, there was one slice of potato that was overcooked to dryness. The flank steak, which it is a tough cut of meat, was too tough for my liking. The seasoning and chimichurri was good, though. Bloody Mary: delicious, comes with green bean, asparagus, and olives. It's a cute brunch spot but the food didn't wow me. Drinks and decor saved it. This place is a good time with a bunch of friends. read more
