Parking is difficult in La Jolla but they do have a little parking lot in the back. We found street parking close by because we came on a week day. The restaurant is not too big and seems cozy. Service was quite fast and efficient. Their hash browns are amazing- super crispy on the outside and almost like mashed potatoes inside. The portions are really big so I would share next time.
Parking in the back made it so nice and convenient! Felt like I went back in time as soon as I walked in. Such a welcoming and cozy environment. We had Horchata Cold Brews & Spiced Chai Latte to start! SUPER TASTY; practically chugged all our drinks & then enjoyed all of our wonderfully made dishes. UNREAL. I was told this place was amazing and as a first timer, I could not agree more. Already trying to go back. Service was excellent! Very kind server who was patient with all of my husband's questions
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Charming nostalgic diner with decent food and nice service. I like the lore of how Harry followed his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers to CA and made his way down to La Jolla and opened this diner. The place was established in 1960 and looks it, inside and out, but not in a bad way. Lots of nostalgic stuff on the walls and locals in the seats. At about 10:30am on a Friday there was no problem getting a table. We ordered: - Tuna melt with hash browns (really great, especially the hash browns, which came extra crispy, like I requested.) - scrambled eggs, single pancake, cottage cheese (only complaint from hubby was that the pancake was cold, but he didn't say anything til he finished eating it, lol. I have a feeling they would've given him another one if he'd said something, but oh well) Pretty spendy for diner food, but it was tasty and the service was friendly. Lots of merch available, like hats, mugs, stickers, etc. I'd say it was more like 3.5 stars but I'm rounding up.
We popped in here for a breakfast with the kids and were not disappointed. The original leather booth seats from the 60's and old style atmosphere stays true to its roots. I love the retro feel of this diner. The service staff were very friendly and attentive. Kids had Oreo shakes with their pancake and eggs (Happy New Year!). We ordered the breakfast burrito and Corned Beef Hash. I also ordered the espresso milkshake which was very delicious! The portions are very generous which I appreciate. Most dishes can be shared. I would definitely recommend trying this place!
OMG, I would come here all the time, if I lived in this city. This was my first time trying Harry's Coffee Shop and it did not disappoint. I ordered the corn beef hash with soft scrambled and hashbrowns. I've never had it the way they have prepared it before. The outside layer of the corn beef was crispy. It was really good. The hashbrowns were crispy on the outside and potatoey on the inside. I love my hashbrowns that way. It was perfect. Usually when I order eggs, soft scramble, it is usually not soft scrambled. Other restaurants over cook eggs, but they didn't. It was perfect. I very much enjoyed my breakfast. Our server was very nice. Since we have not been there before, she recommended some popular items to us. It looks like they specialize in milkshakes. The have a menu of milkshakes. I would have tried one, but I didn't want a milkshake for breakfast. That would totally fill me up. Maybe next time for lunch. I would love to come here again to try other items on the menu when I'm in town again.
If you are looking for good food with okay service, this is the spot. My girlfriend ordered the BW Benny and I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak on a Waffle. I loved the crispiness of my chicken fried steak and the gravy was the cherry in top bringing it all together. The poached egg and hollandaise sauce was amazing. If we ever find ourselves in La Jolla for breakfast, we will be back.
A good experience if you're looking for that family-feel diner restaurant. For a saturday at 11am, it wasn't extremely busy and we were seated pretty fast. I was surprised by the range of food items on the menu, my chilaquiles were delicious. Everyone else in my group enjoyed their food. I'd say out of their mexican-style breakfast options they weren't the greatest if you're seeking authenticity. But, definitely try their pancakes!
My son requested Harry's for his bday breakfast. I can't believe I had never been here before! I use the word 'cozy often when describing the really great spots...this is one of them! Just a proper diner-style joint with delicious food. We were instantly greeted by friendly staff and shown to our seat. The service just kept getting better after that and the waiter "rolled out the red carpet" when he found out there was a birthday. Mini pancakes with dipping syrup and whipped cream! Sometimes it's the little things.
I had a decent experience coming here for brunch. They have a diner style menu including both sweet and savory options. I ordered the veggie burrito. I also ordered two mimosas. The food tasted okay, I think my burrito was lacking some flavor. It's a hefty portion which could be big enough for two people. I do think the service fell a bit short as it took a while to order my second drink and it took time before we got our check. Good location in La Jolla and street parking nearby.
Harry's definitely has a wait during the weekends, but worth it. Our server was sweet and attentive. I ordered a Denver omelette which I was surprised to see it served with a pineapple. As much as I love pineapple I did not eat. But I did want to say I loved the ratio of ham size in the omelette. Some places have too big of chucks and truly feel like it throws it off but this place did it just perfect.
The thing about Harry's is that, even when they are jam-packed with customers, they still have an insane turnaround on food. I recently came in and received my food in about 5 minutes after ordering, and every seat was full in the house. They have really good food, a basic diner set up with a few quirky twists. Highly recommend this spot. Parking can be tricky sometimes, but not terrible do to their decent sized lot in the back for patrons. I recommend any of the omelettes and their shakes. The basic egg breakfasts are great too. Amazing hashbrowns. Update: Came back to Harry's this past weekend after several years without a visit. My brother ordered the corned beef hash, his wife ordered the California breakfast burrito, and I ordered the chicken salad sandwich--an item I've never had. I also got an espresso martini, which I've also never had from Harry's. The food was pretty good overall, though my brother's hash browns were unexpectedly undercooked and mushy, which was surprising since Harry's typically has pretty crispy hash browns. The chicken salad sandwich was pretty good, although slightly bland-ish in flavor. The espresso martini was very tasty and well made.
Absolutely LOVE this diner that is nestled in between all the modern La Jolla shops and boutiques. It offers that classic retro diner feel all while delivering excellent food to match. Do yourself a favor and get the belgian waffle. It is so delicious - it doesn't even need toppings. The eggs, hashbrowns, and bacon are also great sides for the main event. The coffee was smooth. The service was great. I have no notes besides absolutely needing to try those milkshakes next time!
This is hands down some of the best diner food I've ever had! We had seen this unassuming place from the front & it looks so cute and we wanted to come here anyway. Then I had a friend say that he actually met Bing Crosby here way back in the day so we were like "Okay, we gotta go now!" First of all the place is WAY bigger inside than it looks from the front and the decor is very comfortable and filled with tons of nostalgic pictures and photos of years gone by. A nostalgic, elegant vibe for a diner and you feel very comfortable inside. And the food is fantastic! (They also have wifi) I got the Corned Beef Hash & Eggs ($20.95) which has been a favorite since 1960! It is awesome corned beef served with 2 eggs, hash browns and your choice of toast or buttermilk pancakes. And those pancakes are some of the best tasting pancakes I've had - so delicious! ...and the corned beef, eggs over easy and hash browns were perfectly cooked and seasoned and it was an amazing breakfast! My sweetheart got Harry's famous Tuna Melt ($17.95) which is tuna salad with tomato, melted cheddar cheese served on grilled sourdough (add avocado for $2) and your choice of fries or fruit. She is a huge fan of tuna melts and she absolutely loved this one! It's good to see that Harry's is still doing it right - We will definitely be back. read more

I had the best tuna melt I've ever had here at Harry's. It was on sourdough bread with grilled tomatoes (wonderful touch), cheddar cheese, and a delish tuna salad. Will definitely be coming back for this sando! My partner got a pancake, bacon, and eggs and said it was great! read more

We, MY PARTNER AND I, went to Harry's Coffee Shop today because it was such a beautiful day this March 1ST!!! We have to say to say that after having been coming here more than 10 Times, the place had a NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENT in the food, service, and in every other single respect. It started with courtesy seating at a back table to accommodate me and my walker. We loved our server, LUIS. He was quick, attentive and very polite and friendly. He got our order correct, EVEN WITH SUBSTITUTIONS!!! When we ever needed something, he was there, NAPKINS, MUSTARD, TAPATIO. We BOTH thought that the pancakes were definitely FLUFFIER!!! As for my partner, he said that his omelette and hash browns were fresher and toasted, and there was more of them!!! I loved my FRIED EGGS over easy, and the bacon was crispy. I loved my substitution of French Fries. Furthermore, the bill is NOW handled electronically at the table!!! FINALLY, the restroom is also noticeably cleaner. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE IMPROVEMENTS!!! read more

I thought this was the cutest diner with great vibes. It reminded me of something you'd see in Old Hollywood. The food was all very yummy. I had the breakfast burrito which I could have easily shared with someone else! All around great place. read more

Great diner! Been around for a long time and has that old school vibe. The sides include toast, tortillas or a pancake. The orange juice tasted like something from the grocery store so just understand before you come that it's not fancy stuff but it is good and it has a great feel inside, including sitting at a counter which is really cute. read more

Harry's Coffee Shop - La Jolla, San Diego We decided to try out Harry's Coffee Shop after reading so many great reviews. It's been owned and operated since 1960, and with such a long history, we came in with high expectations of great food and good service. We were greeted upon arrival and told to sit wherever we liked. We chose a booth toward the back, away from the door since it was a chilly morning. We had a little one with us and requested a high chair, which was brought right away...a nice start. I will say the old coffee shop vibe was completely on point. From the retro décor and cozy booths, it definitely has that nostalgic diner feel that makes you want to settle in for a hearty breakfast and bottomless coffee. It's the kind of atmosphere that feels like a slice of history -- warm, casual, and familiar. Unfortunately, that's where the experience started to fall short. It took over five minutes before our server came by, despite there being only a few other occupied tables. She seemed to be standing around rather than checking on guests (and she wasn't the only server). When she finally came over, she was friendly and even brought a kids menu and crayons without us asking, which we appreciated, but then another five minutes passed before she returned to take our order. When we started asking questions about the menu, things went further downhill. We asked if the country fried steak was made fresh...the answer was no, it's frozen. We also asked about the corned beef hash, and were told it comes out of a can. For a place with such strong reviews and a long-standing reputation as an iconic coffee shop, we expected a little more care and quality. At that point, we decided it just wasn't what we were looking for and politely let our server know we'd be heading out. While we didn't stay to try the food, our impression was that the service and menu quality didn't match the hype or history. Hopefully, others continue to enjoy it, but it wasn't the right fit for us. read more

This place is an absolute GEM! It's your classic "Denny's Restaurant" but so much better!! I hope I don't scare anybody off by even mentioning Denny's in the same breath as these guys. Deceiving from the front but plenty of room to include booth, counter and outside seating. The wait staff gals are darlings and super friendly!! The food is YUM!!! Don't pass this place up! read more
There's plenty of cute brunch spots in La Jolla so we wanted to try out this diner to change it up! This place is a really solid breakfast place. I ordered the corned beef hash which came with eggs, hashbrowns, and a pancake. I felt like the portion size was pretty large! Everything tasted really yummy, their hashbrowns were cooked perfectly crispy. Service was fairly quick, it was already pretty busy on a Friday morning so I'm sure it's even busier on the weekends. Only thing is I think this place is a bit overpriced for a breakfast diner spot, but most places now are around the same price. My plate was $20, which seems steep for breakfast foods. read more
I've been craving waffles for a little while now, so I was looking for a good place in San Diego with waffles and stumbled across Harry's. I liked the photos I saw of the waffles here because they looked really good. However, they did not taste as good as they looked. These waffles were very dry, overcooked, and nearly burnt. They were a little bit crispy, but lacked any fluffiness. I drove about 30 minutes to come here for their waffles and it was not worth it. I would much prefer Eggo waffles compared to these. The parking lot in the rear of the restaurant was very convenient because finding parking in the area is typically pretty difficult. I came in from the parking lot entrance to the restaurant and was confused on where to check in to be seated. Someone mentioned to check in with the host at the front/main entrance area which was a little odd because from the parking lot entrance you have to walk through the whole restaurant to get to the actual front of the place. Having already walked through the restaurant to get to the front, I noticed there were a lot of booths and it felt very open and spacious. The vibe of the place is very old-timey, diner aesthetic. There were a lot of open booths, however where the host had placed my party at one of the booths towards the left side of the host stand felt very cramped, claustrophobic, and secluded. I felt neglected in this area because it was tight and it didn't seem like anyone was coming around as much. Additionally, upon being seated, I noticed a very pungent smell - almost like an old cologne or hair dye. I thought it was someone next to us, but I smelled it throughout the restaurant even when I was walking towards the restroom. It hurt my nose and it felt hard to breathe properly because the smell was so strong and uncomfortable. I ordered the Superfecta with a waffle instead of pancakes. The server asked me if scrambled eggs were okay, but I requested over medium eggs. They ended up still bringing scrambled eggs with my plate instead of over medium, but at this point I just wanted to get out of the place that I didn't bother telling them it was wrong. The only good thing that gives this place 2 stars instead of 1 was the hash browns. They were very delicious and crispy. read more

Great little spot to have the 60's diner experience!! Friendly staff, rapid service, tasty food. Don't come here for a "healthy" grains breakfast, come here for the classic retro diner food. Ok, everyone who comes here is probably 50 or older or bring their grandkids Prices are the same as most restaurants these days-$20 avg per entree. read more

Great breakfast spot. We were fortunate to walk in and get seated right away, as I heard this place can get busy. I had the Corned Beef Hash and Eggs, and everything was delicious. I especially appreciated that you could choose a pancake instead of toast. A pancake is basically a breakfast dessert--much better than toast! I would recommend this place and will definitely return. read more
