Country kitchen is exactly what you would expect from the name. It's like walking into a small cozy breakfast house in the mid west. Greeting is decent. The place is old but homey. The locals of Prunedale (Prunetucky) are mostly awesome country folk and the food is good. They also make a really good Eggs Benedict.. I've been to high end restaurants that make a crappy Benedict, so that's saying a lot. I have to say County Kitchen is totally worth going to. Outstanding coffee shop near Prunedale, with plenty of parking and a great ambience. This isn't a chain like IHOP or Denny's or a semi-pretentious place like you'd find in Monterey or God forbid Carmel or Pacific Grove. But it's clean, and they work hard to make sure you have a good experience. Rick, the owner, is back helping the cooks and making sure everything is right. The food is fresh, hot, well-cooked and reasonably priced, with daily specials. Good Folger's drip coffee, and regular iced and sweet teas, plus beer and wine if you want that. Two TV's with the volume down low, and plenty of old papers to peruse, along with a small bookcase to borrow from. There is one part-time waitress who has occasional performance issues at times, but that is usually self-correcting and the other regular waitresses and assistants are always moving and working their tails off, and most importantly they are friendly, kind people. Fresh homemade pies and cakes, and homemade soups as well. Compared to Denny's or a mill like Norma's this place is 10 times better. I've never seen them discriminate against anyone at anytime (unless you're an Electrician who likes to give the waitresses a hard time! ;-)), and have been a regular since 2005. If you're there on a Sunday morning it can get pretty hectic, but if you're waiting that doesn't mean they're discriminating against you. (If you want to see discrimination in action, trying being White and going to Denny's in South Salinas and see how many Mexican folks get waited on ahead of you.) The folks at Country Kitchen respect their customers and make sure everyone is comfortable. The outside of the place is "rustic" as is the inside, but that doesn't mean it's dirty or that they don't work hard every day to keep it clean. If you want to pay 3 times as much for food half as good just keep heading South. read more

The food is consistently delicious. The staff is always friendly and they always remember us and ask how we are. You feel at home and taken care of there. Probably one of the tastiest, friendliest, reasonably-priced breakfast - lunch (6AM - 3PM) in the N. Monterey Co. - San Benito Co. area. I have taken to frequenting this place for breakfast, because I can get in & out in 30min, & for less than $15. My comments on the food are restricted to brkfst: Always have 3 attractive specials. Basic fare is above average, but the hashed browns have a musty smell (like they have been kept in the refrig, shredded, way too long). Bacon is good, but sausages leave a lot to be desired (there is lots of competition for good, tasty, sausages out there - could do a lot better). Omelets are great. read more

I thought I had tried all Americana Restaurants in Monterey County. I recently went to one within 2 miles of my home - Country Kitchen. I sat quietly as I looked around the restaurant and began to look at the customers. They were mostly locals who had a home to come too and enjoy their friends and nerighbors. This was what I wore the uniform for - Americans who work hard and enjoy the fruits of their labor. They were having a good time and enjoying the wonderful food and the company of people they loved. It is so true, we look so hard to find a place we can enjoy and I had one just in my back door. The food is 4 to 5 stars, the staff and the customers 5 stars. On our way home from Monterey, we were in a bind and stopped here before getting on the freeway. It's quaint, homey inside. Driven by here many times and thought, gotta go there sometime. This morning was the day. Stopped by around 10:30a with my wife and girls. We were politely helped to sit with a waitress getting a booster and high chair for us. After looking over the menus for a bit and deciding what we wanted, we put them aside. There was another tall, thin waitress serving other folks in the room. She never made eye contact with us or approached our table. Another party came in, she sat them and took their drink order. I stop by with my wife because it looked like a decent place. I was totally wrong. We got our drinks from the bus boy but the waitress never came by to take our order. Six parties came in after us and she took their order before us. My wife and I are Mexican so we believe the waitress was racist. The waitress was quick to help all the white parties but the waitress would not even look at us. The waitress must avoid a lot of people because this is Monterey County where Mexicans are the majority. We went here for breakfast after church and we will not ever be coming back. Appearance- Some might call it "earthy", others might call it "country", but normal would call this place dirty. Everything from the carpet to the walls looked like the restaurant never had a good deep cleaning. The carpet had crumbs and old stains on it. The wall next to our booth had dried up food stains and peeling paint. Our 3 y/o spotted a box of toys behind our booth that our waitress said were there for kids to at with. But the toys were filthy with dirt and dried up food so we didn't let him play with them. The decor was worn out and the entire place needed a paint job and a deep cleaning. Chef Ramsey should find this place. The food- I ordered hashbrowns,eggs, and sausage. My wife ordered biscuits and gravy with bacon. Our son had pancakes and a cup of fruit. My food wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good either. The hashbrowns were not cooked all the way through. My son's pancakes were good. My wife's bacon was fatty and chewy. She had no complaints about her biscuits and gravy. The service- the waitress wasn't too bad but she did forget to bring my wife's food out. We probably waited almost 40 minutes for our food and I noticed that people who arrived after Us. Not sure what was the hold up but she never apologized or explained why.
