31st St. Grill did NOT disappoint! The food was very, very tasty. The menu is vast and can accommodate all types of eaters! They made my sandwich with grilled shrimp since I don't eat any other meat(s). This place was hopping with customers which is a good indicator that the food, atmosphere and service is sufficient! There was a slight wait for drinks but that's expected when business is booming! Another plus is that they had flavored creamer for my coffee! TIP: The portion sizes are large and shareable! Lovely little diner that has it all! We have frequent trips to Salinas these days, we have now had dinner here the last two weeks. We have tried different things on each visit and everything has been quite tasty. We have sat outside on the patio, so cannot speak to the inside other than restroom, which was fine - probably could be a little cleaner near bathrooms. Salmon with piccata sauce - really nice portion, it was quite large serving. The sauce was thicker than I am used to having, almost gravy-texture, but very flavorful. Delicious fresh veggies and I think it was a mashed potato (this was 2 weeks ago). French dip sandwich - hubby thought was spot on, really nice size. Only issue were his fries were a bit soggy. Calamari appetizer - LOVE this - it is really tasty, I prefer the tartar sauce with it, but the calamari is a really nice texture and tastes very fresh. Chicken tenders for kids - this is where I would knock them a bit, says panko crusted, these were not. They were identical to ones we get at Costco, which are great - really nice quality, but these were not what was expected. Fries again were soggy, so kind of a miss on the chicken tenders and fries. Hamburger - delicious my son said, toasted brioche bun was a nice touch. It was cooked well, decent portion as well, not too small and not too large. Steak and shrimp - while the steak was flavorful, it was thin, just slightly thicker than a flank cut. Shrimp were fine - overall it was a 3.5 out of 5 per the hubby. Pepperoni pizza - interesting. It tastes totally fine - its just felt like the dough was more focaccia? not pizza dough? The pepperoni were plentiful, not spicy (which is sometimes good for littles), and cheese was fresh. We enjoyed, but I think we are just spoiled by New York style. Desserts are hit or miss - cookies and the brownie have a really good flavor, but crumbly - like almost too crumbly. You hold and it falls out of your hand. They were out of coconut cream pie - so my hubby got a lemon pie, it was fine. The waitstaff has always been pleasant and attentive! I'd give it 5 stars, but there are areas they can improve on... 1. $6.95 for a kid's lemonade is way too expensive. 2. I'm pretty sure they don't offer real maple syrup. The viscosity completely gives it away that it's "table syrup". That's okay. But why not offer real maple syrup as a chargeable option? 3. The pancakes are very good. But they don't offer fresh blueberries. They offer some kind of berry mix. I don't like blackberries. To me, blueberries are typical standard fare that most breakfast places with pancakes offer. The service is generally excellent. The place is very clean and bright. We will probably be returning. But hope they can make some needed improvements. read more

I even saw a booth that was kinda tucked into a wall and seemed so comfy and would definitely request it next time. Stopped by here on the way to Big Sur. I searched yelp for a good place to eat and this place came up. My wife and I both ordered the Monterey chicken sandwiches based on reviews and it was amazing! (10/10). The sweet potato fries weren't crispy so I'd try a different side. The dessert case looked packed with cookies and pies that all looked so good. This was our first time visiting this restaurant. My wife ordered the New York steak, which was cooked perfectly and had great flavor, along with mashed potatoes. However, the vegetables were overwhelmed with garlic, so much so that she couldn't eat them. My daughter had the French dip. The seasoning was a bit different but still pleasantly mild, and dipping it in the au jus really enhanced the flavor. She also had the sweet potato fries, which she enjoyed. I had the Cali Cubano with sweet potato fries. The Cubano was outstanding--everything came together with the right balance of ingredients and flavors. The service was fast and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm, friendly, and inviting. It was a Friday, and we were too tired to cook dinner, so I looked for a place for my husband and me to eat. I told him, "Let's try 31st Grill." It's a hidden gem in Salinas! So far, I've never gone wrong with my restaurant suggestions to my husband. We ordered chicken piccata and ribs. We didn't finish them, but they were good! I love their garlic bread! The prices are reasonable. Their pastries are underrated; I think they've been sitting there, but they still taste great. I got a triple chocolate muffin and chocolate cookies. Maybe they should add their own iced coffee drinks, too, to give it a cafe/restaurant vibe. The server was attentive too. We would come back again. read more

The 31st Grill is a surprisingly cute breakfast/brunch spot. Some of the other similar spots in town have gone down in quality recently, but this seems to be a great replacement. The restaurant is a bright classic diner with lots of space. The staff is quick and friendly, providing good service. I had the biscuits and gravy, which were delicious. What made their biscuits unique for me was that they had green onions, cheese, and ham baked into them, adding great flavor. read more

I enjoy there breakfast more than lunch, I wouldn't recommend the lunch at all. But breakfast is amazing along with drinks. Speaking of, they don't have a drink menu so know what to order off muscle memory. This restaurant is good but pricey. I've had their breakfast, lunch and bakery items and the taste is definitely there, but $20 for a veggie omelette that had a teaspoon of vegetables in it, is insane. I was catching up with my dad after not seeing him for sometime and the servers kept coming to the table and trying to take my dad's plate away without asking if he was done yet. The first time my dad told the server that he was still working on his food, then 10 minutes later they come again and takes his plate off the table and my dad had to speak up and say he's still eating. This happened 6 times! All 6 times they didn't even ask just went straight to his plate and took it off the table. Unfortunately won't be coming back here again. read more

Talk about charm and delight. The 31st Grill has all of that and more. Old school diner feel with new school warmth. Friendly staff and great food. The breakfast burger was phenomenal. The burrito was fresh, the pancakes were fluffy as a marshmallow and tasty - we washed down with a fresh brewed cup of joe. Cool little sippy cups for the little ones that they get to take home as a souvenir too was a nice touch. The kids were kidding and l didn't have time to take pics. Truly a wonderful experience, my fiancé and I ended up here as first awakening was over packed. SO DARN HAPPY! I had the best eggs Benedict I've literally ever had. The 31st Grill is amazing! Service is great; the size of the restaurant can serve tons of people; the atmosphere is warm, clean, and inviting; and the food is on another level. Came here 2x for breakfast in the last few days and had the same amazing service and food both times. Right when you walk in, you're immediately greeted and even when it was busy we were seated right away. As an added benefit for sports fans, there's plenty of TVs around the bar area to watch morning games while you enjoy breakfast. Although they don't have specific gluten free options, they have plenty of egg based dishes that more than suffice. My husband had their Whole Hog Omelette and their Huevos Ranchero and he loved both of them. Both days I had their French toast and made it a combo with a side of 2 eggs and 2 sausages. One day I chose their chicken apple sausage and the other day I tried their regular pork sausage, the pork sausage is far superior! The French toast phenomenal - delicious caramelization on the outside that gives a nice crunch and super soft and perfectly cooked on the inside. Some of the best French toast I've ever had. Their eggs are fluffy and their orange juice tastes fresh squeezed. All in all, this place is incredible and if you're in Salinas and not going here, you're missing out! read more

3 strikes, I'm out! As someone with food allergies, venturing out to a new spot is always nerve wracking, because placing trust in the hands of an unknown cook is scary! (If you know, you know. If you don't, then you're lucky). My first few times eating at 31st Grill I called ahead to make sure there were options for gluten free customers. They assured me that most everything could be made with modifications, however cross contamination is present. I was okay with that and had two great dining experiences (ordered a hamburger minus bun, and a quinoa salad). My last 3 visits however (in the last 6 months or so) have been nothing but unsatisfactory. With each visit I ordered the same thing- one of their salad options with fruit, nuts, cheese, quinoa, and chicken. When ordering I always make sure to share I have a gluten allergy and that I cannot have the bread or croutons and make sure the dressing is gluten free. The first time, I was presented with the salad minus all of the toppings (cheese, nuts, dried fruit) and given bread on the side. When I explained I couldn't have the bread, I was told "oh you said no gluten, so that's why we took off the cheese and other toppings." With more direction we were able to remedy the situation, however my confidence in feeling safe enough to eat here plummeted. Upon my latest dining, I ordered the same salad, gave the same instructions (no bread, gluten allergy) and was brought a salad minus all of the toppings again! When I explained to the waiter I could have the toppings, just not the bread, he went back to the kitchen, came back and said the reason they didn't put the toppings on was because they were out of the cheese, fruit, and nuts... I said that would've been nice to know so I could make a different selection and the waiter said "Yeah, me too" and left me with the salad, returning with random toppings to substitute. The food, service, and trust in this place has diminished and I will no longer be dining here. I do not blame the waiters in any of these situations, I blame the cooking staff! Food allergies are serious and to not know what a gluten allergy is versus a dairy allergy (and who knows what else) is not acceptable in this day and age and in this area! It's a shame we can't find places in Salinas that know and take food allergies seriously. I gave this place 5 attempts, but no more. read more

To say that this is my favorite restaurant in town is an understatement. Today, Eddie the owner introduced himself to us and served us alongside with Sandra. What I love about this aside from the foods are the excellent service that they give you. There's always a personal touch. It's refreshing to have those kind of restaurants that value their diners. I've been coming here since it was Norma's Family Restaurant, and while that was great, this new iteration is even better! My partner and I recently stopped by for dinner, and it was an incredible experience. I ordered the blackened chicken fettuccine Alfredo, and it was hands down one of the best I've had in a long time. The sauce was rich yet light, and the garlic bread was absolutely delicious. For an appetizer, we had the calamari, which I found to be among the best in Salinas, especially compared to places in Monterey. My partner had the Chicken Piccata, and he raved about it and I couldn't agree more. The zesty sauce was perfectly balanced and rich! Service was also fantastic! The restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes, and both the food and ambiance reminded me of the Lalla chain of restaurants (like Elli's, Lalla Grill, and Lalla Oceanside) only much more affordable. Honestly, and I don't say this lightly, but it was all so delicious! The best biscuits and gravy and pancakes we've ever had! The service was friendly and attentive. Everyone was polite and took good care of us. Since it was our first time, our waitress did a good job helping us decide what to get. The restaurant is comfortable, clean, and in good order. No loud music or people on top of each other. Plenty of space between tables. Oh, last thing, they make all their pies and pastries there, so definitely get something sweet while you're there.
