I'm sorry to leave a bad review. But we ordered the fried calamari and it's like chewing on a garden hose. It was cold, flavorless, and chewy. The lobster ravioli was decent though but also cold. We wanted to try this place for years and had an afternoon with nothing to do so we headed across town and found this in the Safeway shopping center in North Salinas. We were surprised to see it was almost empty at 1 pm on a weekday. The menu is extensive with breakfast all day. Hubby had the chili verde omelette and it was one of the best omelettes he had ever had. The potatoes were fresh made and delicious. He also had a side of biscuits and gravy which brought back memories for me because it tasted like it was made with canned milk which is what my grandma always used in her gravy. It gives it a creamy and slightly sweet flavor. I got the crab cakes and the calamari. Both were also freshly made and delicious. I loved the sauce with the crab cakes. Really just your average American diner/ breakfast restaurant that is located around what feels like the "suburban" areas of Salinas, Villages serves your classic American breakfast foods mixed in with Mexican breakfast options (like Chilaquiles and Huevos Rancheros). The Village is a nice, local, family run eatery. Lots of choices on the menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We went for brekky. The Mrs. had the special (not on the menu, or specials board) Chile Relleno omelette. It WAS SO GOOD!!!!!! It was exactly as described: a fresh poblano, stuffed with cheese, and wrapped in an omelette with a slight spicy tomato salsa. Wow! I'd go back just for this! I had the country fried steak and eggs. The steak was good and well-tenderized and breaded. The gravy was almost inedible. It was only gravy in the literal sense because it covered my steak. What it really was, was warm cream with some cooked and crumbled sausage thrown in. It was watery and bland. Hopefully this was just a bad gravy day and this is not what their gravy is like everyday. The home fries were warm and crispy and delicious. The scrambled eggs were on point. The coffee was fresh and refilled regularly and they have French vanilla creamer on the table. Came with a group of 15. They easily and happily accommodated us. They were friendly, orders came out quick. The food.....yes, the food. I ordered the chilaquiles (green salsa), with over medium eggs on top and a side of hash browns. Sooo so bomb. Authentic flavor. Full plate of food. Lots of value compared to the price. I wouldve taken a picture but the food looked too good and i couldn't help myself from digging right in until all that was left was the plate. So sorry about not taking a picture but take my word for it. My bro who ordered something else leaned over and said that looks so good and next time hes here hes gunna order the chilaquiles but honestly everyones food looked good and i heard zero complaints. They were accommodating to my bro that has a gluten allergy too but making his french toast with sourdough. Not from Salinas but if im nearby, ill most definitely return. Maybe this restaurant would be good for breakfast. I had read the reviews of the dinner menu and the seafood dish with salmon and mahi-mahi sounded really good. However, it was really substandard. There was too much seasoning on the mashed potatoes in combination with the Sauce on the seafood. The salmon tasted really fishy, and the mahi-mahi was not good and I could not tell what the other Seafood on the plate was. While the roll was delicious, it was very tough and overcooked. The server was sufficient, but very unfriendly. She never Asked us if we wanted anything more or dessert. read more

My first clue should have been the empty restaurant. No booths; just several tables that seat four. Kinda on the cold side for a restaurant. Not cozy at all. The server was very kind and attentive. The only issue I had with him was he gave me raspberry sweetened tea when I asked for unsweetened. I think it was a language thing. My daughter and I got the seafood Monterey combo that includes mahi mahi, salmon and snapper in a lemon basil sauce. And my husband got the maple soy skirt steak. When our food came to the table I could smell bad fish and I've got a cold and my right side is completely stuffed. My daughter confirmed my suspicion. The salmon was not rotten but I could tell it was a little on the old side but one of the white pieces of fish stunk to high heaven. The lemon basil sauce was great. Too bad it was masking bad fish. The cook definitely had to have known. The maple soy wasn't awful but the cut of meat was cheap and very stringy. Needless to say, we won't be returning. I had high hopes for this place too. I honestly do not recommend this place if you are super hungry. I'm giving them a two star review because although they greet you well, and bring over water and coffee on the spot, their service goes from 10 to 2 immediately. The owners do not know how to work under stress, which creates a negative ambiance. They only gave 1-2 cooks in the back to satisfy 50-60 people in the place. When you inquire about your order, the lady gets upset and give you excuses, then she ignores you. It took us 2 hours to get our food. I feel at fault for not standing up and leaving the place. I just know I'm not going back ever. I do not recommend it at all. The chilaquiles, huecos ranchers, steak and eggs were by the way cold by when we got them. read more

This was a chance encounter. Had extra time and this place was the closest to us at the moment. The customer service here is welcoming and friendly! Not sure if this is a family owned restaurant but those were the vibes it was giving. I liked the oj and my omelette with bacon in it was average. If there's one thing they're getting right, it's their kindness! The food itself is mediocre. It's the type of food you'd find at any typical cafeteria. Not amazing but not bad. The veggies served with our meals were cooked to death. The chicken marsala sort of tasted like soy sauce. The steak was ordered medium rare but came out well done. Everything was edible but just ok. I ordered the crab cake Benedict. For a restaurant that has a whole section on eggs benedict, I expected better. The poached egg is beyond over cooked and the hollandaise is split. This is not what an eggs Benedict looks like. I was pretty disappointed. The crab cake was fine and I wasn't mad at the potatoes. They weren't enough to save this dish. Someone get the cook to watch a YouTube video on it. This is the saddest eggs benedict I've ever had. Owners were very welcoming and friendly upon walking in. They were wearing masks and were following protocols (hand sanitizer) if people wanted. The menus were not clean and stuck together when we looked at options. The entire restaurant, especially the bathroom needs a very deep cleaning. Cesar salad was fresh and had good flavor. Turkey burger was just ok. Bacon had odd flavor (like rancid oil). Fries were hot and just ok. If it weren't for the friendly staff, I likely would not go again if ever In the area again.
