Wow. The tri tip here cannot be beat. We split a tri tip platter and wished we had ordered more. The sides were ok, potato salad and baked beans. The sauces were PHENOMENAL. I soaked my bread in the hog wash and it was so good. The 4-meat combo gives you a good chance to try a little bit of everything, so I went with brisket, tri-tip, ribs, and burnt ends. For sides, I ordered the mac and cheese, cornbread, and garlic bread. The **ribs were easily the best part** of the meal. They were fall-off-the-bone tender, had great flavor, and were the one meat I'd definitely come back for. **8/10**. The **brisket was disappointing**. It was pretty fatty, and the seasoning on top made it extremely salty. It also tasted like it had been sitting around rather than being fresh, moist brisket. **5/10**. The **tri-tip was soft but very dry** and didn't have much flavor. **4.5/10**. The **burnt ends were too sweet and difficult to chew**. Unfortunately, these were another miss for me. **4/10**. For the sides, the **mac and cheese was solid**. It wasn't overly saucy, but you could taste the real cheese, which I liked. **7/10**. The **garlic bread barely had any garlic flavor at all**, so it was pretty disappointing. **4/10**. The **cornbread was the worst side by far**. It honestly didn't taste like cornbread to me--it tasted more like a regular slice of bread trying to be cornbread. I wouldn't order it again. **1/10**. One thing I will say is that the **service was excellent**. Our server was friendly, answered all of our questions, and the food came out promptly. The restaurant also has a very **homey, welcoming atmosphere**, almost like you're walking into someone's house, which made the experience comfortable. They also have both a regular and spicy BBQ sauce available for self-serve, and both were good. Parking is limited, with some street parking available on the side of the restaurant. **Overall, I'd give the food around a 6/10.** The ribs are definitely worth trying, but most of the other meats and sides were just okay or disappointing. If I come back, I'd probably skip the combo and just order the ribs. read more

hi there! second time ordering out from here ! love the flavor of the meat! first visit ordered pull pork a giant potato and some cole slaw and a small piece of garlic bread.. was good. second visit was recent, a day ago! I decided to order the potato can chose your meats and sides ... the potato is giant size. i added cheese extra sour cream and honestly i ordered same meat as first visit meal. pull pork in my potato this time... everything was ok... one thing i'd like to see is to give a fair amount of meat in potato i'd have to guess maybe 4 fork fulls of meat in potato... I'm trying new places as of lately and wondering when asking for sides or extra barely getting a sufficient amount for the cost. Economy is so expensive and usually we go to same places from past for that very reason. We know what to expect with places we frequent. We will be back again but would like to think fair amount of food and paying extra for sides to add to a loaded potato is what you will get.. service was fast and professionally packed. this place sits at the old smallys on market street. trying new places in our city of salinas is challenging for struggling times everyone is more careful with their $$. potato is a hit and miss was a bit hard extra butter would have been nice . maybe it's a lot diff doing take out vs. in restaurant so we could ask for extras to address this stuff while enjoying a new place. thanks for the food service and we hope to return it's up to the husband lol... kindest regards, Corina read more

As always, the Salinas city barbecue doesn't disappoint. We got their $95 July 4 package and it included two meats and three sides. There was some confusion about whether or not you got a loaf of bread as a side or just as part of the package. And they said they wouldn't give it to us even though the menu and the online ordering both said it included three sides AND garlic bread. That aside the pulled pork was delicious. We got 2 pounds. We split everything that we got with our son and daughter-in-law. My husband and I have been eating it now for three days and have had it as pulled pork sliders with pickles and slaw on it and it is absolutely delicious. The ribs were spot on crispy outside and soft, tender meat on the inside with their spicy barbecue sauce added -perfect. The brisket was very flavorful and deeply smoked. The pieces fell apart as I served them and didn't need anything on them. They could just be eaten alone and were perfect. The three chickens that were half chickens that were included in the Fourth of July package deal was perfectly grilled to perfection and dipped in their barbecue sauce. the juicy meat of the chicken was perfect. With the package, we got the 2 pounds of pulled pork and the 3half chickens, we got the coleslaw, which is super bland, but a nice crunch to add to a pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, which is very very good and the beans spicy and savory. Separately we bought 2 pounds of brisket the rack of ribs and the macaroni and cheese. We had to pay for the bread and got six pretty bland pieces of what was supposed to be garlic bread, but didn't taste garlicky at all for $12. I wish they would've just thrown in the loaf of garlic bread as a comp because we're such great customers, but you can't beat their barbecue I'm not complaining. I'm just sharing my experience. $95 for the Fourth of July package and then another $150 for the 2 pounds of brisket the rack of ribs, the bread and the pint of macaroni and cheese. A little pricey, but really good. $250 total. It's fed five people for several days now. We order from them on most holidays and I've gotten their smoked turkeys for the last three or four Thanksgiving's. It is off the charts amazing and it's our second turkey that we add to our baked turkey to have two different kinds, which is nice. 9/10 Definitely an amazing meal! I enjoyed both the Large Tri-Tip Sandwich and the Tri-Tip by itself. Starting with the sandwich, the soft bread and the tri tip were perfect together. It's simple, minimal, and honestly doesn't need anything extra to taste great. The side of jalapeños and pickles added a nice kick without overpowering it. The Tri-Tip on its own was also solid, seasoned perfectly and cooked just right. The only downside for me was that some of the cuts came out a bit cold, which was disappointing since everything else was on point. Service was great, everyone was friendly, and the environment had a nice vibe with the Christmas decorations. Pork ribs are on point! Do not need sauce but they do have it available. Really good baked potato for the size, and glad I got the chilli beans paired nicely with the potato, cornbread kind of tasted like French toast was ok. We visited Salinas City BBQ with out of town guests, and everybody loved it. We pretty much all ordered the brisket and ate every bite. My kids especially liked the Mac n cheese and coleslaw sides. We weren't crazy about the beans, but I think we were expecting more of a sweet flavor. The little pickled jalapeños, cucumbers and onions were delicious. They had tons of flavor and the seasoning was on point. The coleslaw was very simple, but tasty. The brisket really had great flavor, but because of the cut I received it was extremely fatty and I could not eat most of it. If you like spicy, the beans are for you. I used to eat here many years ago when it was a steaknhouse. So good to see that the new owners really made a success of this location.
