A great local spot to come to if you're driving through town or want a delicious place to grab a warm and comforting meal. We got the 2 protein plate to share with the ribs and brisket which came with 2 sides - we choose mac n cheese and coleslaw. The kids split a hot dog plate which also comes with 1 side and we chose mac n cheese. All the food was delicious and well cooked - the brisket especially was fall apart, fatty, and juicy. I only wish there was more food that came on the plate! read more

It has a nice kick and mix of different barbecue taste. I really like going to this place. I recommend it to most people from the city. Just a few minutes away from home and a cool environment. I got the smoke tried to barbecue extravaganza and I thought that I've never try better barbecue ever. This is definitely the kind of place you're gonna go to with your family. Wow! This place is amazing. Very hospitable and I love all the signs on the walls that had me laughing out loud. Menu is pretty straightforward with lots of options to choose from. Since we had a late lunch, I wasn't feeling super hungry, so opted for the lil' meal, which comes with one choice of meat, garlic bread, and one side of your choice. The significant other opted for the regular meal, which comes with one choice of meat, bread, pickles, and two sides. The beef brisket was so tender! I don't even think we needed the knife to cut it and the pork ribs were so flavorful and falling off the bone. The sides tasted homemade and not overly salted. If you are on the-go, they also have sandwiches with their BBQ meats that you can opt for instead with less of the mess. Definitely need to stop by if you are in Salinas. read more

We tried the Brisket, Tri Tip, and Ribs. All were delicious. The Garlic Bread was so tasty! My favorite item this visit was their seasonal Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Best Strawberry Rhubarb I've had anywhere. Our sides were beans and potato salad. The beans were fine. Nothing special, lightly seasoned beans, no spice or heat. Unfortunately, the potato salad looked gross. Grainy, not creamy. Tasted as good as it looked. Be warned, try a different side. When I return, I will try two different sides. read more

Dry and tasteless cornbread!! Ordered a pound of brisket and a half loaf of cornbread and heard great things about this restaurant. Cornbread was the driest bread I've had in a while, I could go to the market and get better bread. Had little to no cornbread flavor and was so dry, like the chefs aren't doing quality control. I've been working in the restaurant industry for 15 years and I've never left a bad review but that cornbread deserved a mention to how bad it was. Brisket was amazing, BBQ sauce was great. We dine here every time we pass through Salinas! Amazing staff, great atmosphere...and best brisket, triip and burndt ends in Monterey county....baked potatoes, coleslaw slaw, corn bread....yum. Placed my order (called) for pulled pork sandwich and a full slab of ribs. Went to pick it up and was told they were out of pulled pork. I asked why were we not told when the order was placed. Just a blank stare. Was asked if I wanted to order something else, told them to cancel the order. The order was placed at 530, so why on a Saturday would you not smoke sufficient quantities is beyond me. Not the first time, my bet is it won't be the last. read more

We came here after the recent Spartan race so that our athletes could pack in some protein. This barbecue was sooooooo good. The brisket and ribs were so flavorful. The sides also were excellent. The Mac was cheesy and seasoned well, the coleslaw was fresh, crispy and not too mayonnaise-y and the beans tasted fresh (these did not taste like canned beans!). Oh and the cornbread was really good as well - comes out in nice big, toasted slices. Nothing we ate tasted overly salted or seasoned which I really appreciated. We will be back. WOW! This spot was suggested by a co-worker and since we were driving through Salinas after a medical transport, we stopped by to grab some Q. The place was clean and the staff was fantastic. I was not super hungry, but as with any BBQ place the brisket tells you all you need to know so that is what I ordered and nothing else. The food: Brisket: The brisket was perfectly smoked and had fantastic flavor. I do wish we had the option of juicy vs. lean as I would have had the juicy hands down. The smoke was perfectly infused and the crust was heavenly. If they offer burnt ends I would pull that trigger in an heartbeat. The sauce was perfect add on to it. With just the right amount of sweet and smoke, the vinegar hit was just right to cut down the richness of the meat. I cannot wait to try their many other offerings. Until Horn BBQ in Oakland reopens this will occupy the #1 spot in my Bay Area BBQ Brisket rankings! read more

Absolutely fabulous bbq and the smoky spicy bbq sauce is incredible. I had the Santa Maria salad with tri tip- a half pound of awesome flavor. My husband had ribs. Cornbread was yummy. Was in Salinas for a work trip and wanted to have something a little different so looked on my yelp and found this place. Four stars right off the bat. Really good food, nice woman working in there, helped me pick out my meal and local craft beer. They were out pulled pork so I had the tri-tip which was fantastic. Great service, great meat, the coleslaw was fantastic on the garlic bread topped it all off. It looks like they make their own barbecue sauce, which I had the regular and it was great. I tried the spicy. It was a little too much for me but very flavorful. Solid place. It was a Tuesday night so there wasn't a lot of people in there, but I'm sure on Friday and Saturday The place is rockin. They do have Pepsi products which if you read my reviews is not what I drink but just FYI. read more

My fiancée and I stopped here on our way to Cambria. Ended up being a great choice, we got the pork ribs with side of beans and Mac and cheese. Ribs were very tender and went really well with their house made bbq sauce. Both the spicy and regular sauces were hits but we both liked the spicy a bit more. The Mac and cheese was creamy and smooth, clearly house made as well which we really appreciate since we run into a lot of premade cafeteria Mac and cheese at similar places. Beans were also filling, couldn't finish it and ended up having as leftovers. We ran into someone here who had just moved from Texas 3 months ago and he also mentioned this joint was the closest thing to feeling like homemade food for him, which was very encouraging. A whole coffee carafe was left on our table which was a bit of a surprise and the orange juice as advertised tasted freshly squeezed. Before ordering our food, my husband began asking the waiter about gluten free pancakes or waffles (since such was advertised online in a review from 11yrs ago) and before he could even finish the question the waiter cut him off to explain all the pancake and waffle options. My husband kindly asked again and was told they didn't have any specific gluten free options. That's ok, he ordered their Bacado omelette and instead of toast on the side he asked for a side of fruit. I ordered their Cinnamon Bread French Toast and a side of 1 scrambled egg and 1 sausage. I was told the sausage only comes in 2 or 4, and so I chose 2. When the food arrived, I immediately thought this all looks ok. And the taste was just the same. The omelette was not fluffy like you'd expect a highly rated restaurant omelette to be. The side of fruit came in a condiment cup and had 1 grape as well as 3 pieces of other fruit. The hash browns were sad looking, pretty pale and absolutely no crunch. My husband even added salt which was sad and rare to watch him do. My French toast was ok, kind of soggy and didn't have any caramelization or crunch on the outside whatsoever. It's definitely cinnamon toast vs a cinnamon roll French toast and was nothing special. The sausage was the best part which says a lot. I wouldn't come back here because there's infinitely better options minutes away.

My avocado toast was served on a single very thick piece of bread, which had a very generous amount of avocado smash and was topped off with this delightful and fresh arugula salad. I added an over easy egg for an extra charge that was the perfect balance. The house salad was simple with butter lettuce, cherry tomatoes, radish, cucumber, with a light lemon house dressing that brought the salad together. It was refreshing. The French toast is pretty standard. Nothing that particularly stood out. The banana pecan pancake was delicious and shared with everyone at the table. The house potatoes were extra crispy on the outside but soft on the inside, which I found particularly satisfying. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and found Portabello's to be a good brunch spot in Salinas. The service was fast, the food portions were big, the food tasted fresh, and it was a nice ambiance.
