My review is based on just a visit to the Country House, not an actual experience dining there! I came here with my daughter and her fiance on the recommendation of a friend who has held a couple of different parties there. My visit was to get information about their Bridal Shower packages. As you walk in, my first impression was charming, no question this would be a perfect place for my daughters shower! Since Easter is next month, the restaurant was already decorated over the top for it! My supervisor at work has dined at The Country House during Christmas and no exaggeration, it is somewhere I could imagine you would see in a fearure film Holiday movie. Not one stone is left unturned, I saw some pictures and they were just beautiful! My appointment was with the owner, a very gracious man who obviously knows how to throw a celebration....detail, detail, detail!! You receive soup to nuts, the menu is superb! I was so impressed and excited, I wanted this so bad for my daughter, until he advised what the cost would be per person. Unfortunately for me, it was way too much over my budget, it was literally double the cost of anywhere else I have been to so far! But, I can absolutely tell you this, if I could afford it, no question my daughters shower would have been held at The Country House! I am going to absolutely dine here for an occasion one day, so I can review an actual experience next time! read more

I've been meaning to try Country House for a while. After reading Yelp reviews, I noticed most people either love it or really dislike it. Many of the negative reviews seemed tied to holiday timing or house rules, while most people still said the food was good. With that in mind, I went in with an open mind. My wife and I were meeting two other couples, so I arrived early and had a drink at the bar. The restaurant was still decorated for Christmas, which fit well with the historic feel of the building. The space is cozy, traditional, and very old-school. This is not a modern or trendy restaurant, it feels like stepping back in time. The restaurant wasn't busy, but it wasn't empty either. A few tables were seated, and the overall pace was calm and quiet. The bartender (who may also be the owner) made our drinks and worked quietly at the bar. Nothing felt rushed. When the rest of our group arrived, we were seated right away. One thing to note: even though it was January 7, we were still given a holiday menu instead of the regular menu shown online. That surprised me and required changing what I planned to order. It wasn't a big issue, but it's good to know menus may change around holidays. We ordered wine, cocktails. Our server was friendly and helpful. Someone asked for blue-cheese-stuffed olives, which weren't listed, but the kitchen made them anyway, which was appreciated. For dinner, I ordered the Chicken Madeira, which was very good and something I would order again. Another person ordered the braised short rib, which looked excellent! large portion and nicely presented. Everyone at the table seemed happy with their food. One more note based on other reviews: I had seen comments saying the restaurant would not split checks across more than two credit cards. That was not our experience. Our bill was split evenly three ways across three cards with no issue at all. We also did not feel rushed. We stayed comfortably at the table and didn't ask for the check until close to 10:00 PM, which was very different from some of the rushed experiences mentioned in other reviews. Country House is a quiet, traditional restaurant with a slower pace. If you enjoy historic buildings, classic food, and a relaxed dining experience, this place is worth trying. If you're looking for fast service, a loud atmosphere, or lots of flexibility, this may not be the right spot. But if you want a calm night out in a unique setting, it's a solid choice. read more

1 Star -- And only because I can't give zero THE COUNTRY HOUSE, STONY BROOK AKA: "Where the Ghost Has Better Manners Than the Owner." Let me just start by saying: We booked a 3 PM Thanksgiving reservation in SEPTEMBER. Not last week. Not yesterday. SEPTEMBER. Yet somehow this restaurant still managed to seat us over 30 minutes late -- with zero apology and even less awareness. But we stayed calm because, hey, it's a holiday and we're decent human beings. We get it! The owner? Not so much. This man walked around acting like he was blessing the room with his presence, handing out cookies with no plates like we were trick-or-treating, and offering Whitman's sampler chocolates as if they were handcrafted Belgian truffles. Sir, if you're going to play chocolatier, at least peel the wrapper off first. Dinner was palatable. When it came to dessert-- mine wasn't finished or asked if I wanted it boxed to go, even though we weren't lingering, we weren't holding up tables, we weren't doing anything except paying the bill. But apparently THAT was too much for him, because the owner marched over and invited us to get up and leave. Excuse me? You sat us late. YOU. Not us. So don't rush MY family off the property like we stole your turkey. We had a THREE-HOUR dining window. We didn't even get the time WE RESERVED because you couldn't stay on schedule. That's not on us -- that's on management. Or lack thereof. And let's talk about him doing this while my father -- who is disabled and can barely walk -- was still getting himself together. The nerve. The disrespect. The lack of basic human decency. He clearly thought he was talking to people with no backbone, but guess what? Wrong table. Honestly? I see why the place is haunted. Even the ghosts are probably trying to escape that man's attitude. The spirit roaming around has better manners than the owner who's been alive for decades. To the staff: you were wonderful. To the owner: if hosting people on Thanksgiving is so stressful you start evicting families while they're paying, maybe it's time to hang up the apron and let the spirits run the dining room. They'd be friendlier. We won't be back. Not with service like this. The food didn't ruin Thanksgiving -- the owner did. Had a family thanksgiving dinner yesterday and I can not believe how this establishment can justify what they charged Turkey was "deli" quality and not at all like was you'd expect ! Not a true roasted turkey First course - for our table 3 of the calamari apps - burnt Meat roll- not at all appetizing Butternut soups- overly sweet, like a dessert The lobster was nice Deserts- the sorbet was actually a rainbow sherbet Came around with lots of cookies - Seriously?? The Country House is always decorated beautifully. We went recently for lunch on a Saturday. It was not crowded. So thankfully it was not loud. The server was friendly and took our order promptly. We ordered a warm Lobster Roll and Chicken Francese with Linguine. We each ordered a Club Soda. The meals are served about 25 minutes later. My friend received her Lobster roll as ordered and I received Waffles. (!) After apologizing the waiter promised to return with the correct item. I insisted my friend go ahead and eat so her food didn't get cold. After waiting fifteen minutes my food arrived. It was served in a bowl and was swimming in sauce. It was tasty just very difficult to eat without wearing it. I was very disappointed. If you are not busy and cannot get two meals correct there is a problem. If you are charging $8 for a club soda that is ridiculous. $120 for lunch is not cheap. For that price I would like to eat at the same time as my companion. Sorry I won't be returning. read more

A 1 Star meal surrounded by pretty decorations. Although the ambiance was great, the duck I ordered from the Prix Fixe lunch menu was so tough it was not edible. I could barely even cut it with the serrated knife. Leaving the entire duck on my plate, I told the waiter that it was not edible. He kept apologizing profusely, (but he wasn't the chef or the owner.) His apologies didn't make the meal edible. So for a small salad, (which was tasty) , an unedible half a duck, some plain white rice, a few steamed vegetables, a sorbet for dessert, a glass of wine and a cup of coffee, (with no refills offered) I paid over $116. This place is a Gem! My husband and I come here often and love everything about this place. The atmosphere is cozy and warm and inviting. Most importantly the staff and food are out of this world. We have never had a bad dinner here. I love the Fireside salad, one of my favorite dishes. The server Nick, is perfect! He caters to you and makes you feel at home even when he sees you walk In. The owner as well, when he sees us or other guests come in he makes sure he greets us and others. I can not say enough good things about this place. Thank you for a great experience every time. I live in the area and have not been to the Country House in many years (20+). I went with my family for the holidays and the food was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meals (pork chop, filet mignon, bone in short rib and tuna) and the desserts (the apple crumb was excellent and not too sweet) and the specialty coffees. I want to mention our server Jackie as she gave great recommendations and provided us with excellent service. She added to the great experience we had. I also want to mention how nicely the restaurant was decorated for the holidays. I would rate 5 stars based on the server Jackie and the food. I am rating 4 stars due to the following: the charge of 25.00 per person to hold the reservation is "non- refundable." The experience when we first walked in the door was not welcoming. They frown upon you taking your jacket with you and were told you could not hang it on the chair and would need to sit on your jacket. If you do not like checking your jacket you should leave it in the car. The bathrooms are also overloaded with air freshener smell which is covering up a mold problem or other issue. I could not stay in their long as I was getting a headache right away. For the money that you are spending the constructive feedback I am mentioning are expected where in other cases you may overlook it. read more

Closed on Tuesdays. Called 8 times to make a reservation on a Wednesday, weeks in advance of when my group wanted to go to Country house and they had a busy tone. They are not available on Open Table or Resy. After many attempts, my information was taken down and I was told someone would call me back to confirm my reservation. I never got a callback and tried calling back many times again on Thursday to make sure our reservation was in place. I was told, "Oh, your name is already here for this time and date." How frustrating. First impression: We get to the restaurant for lunch, and crickets. There was no one in the front of the restaurant for a while. The decorations were beautiful, but I found it odd that someone decided to hang lights while our party was seated since they knew we were coming in. Why now? In addition to that, we did not get our menus for a while after we were seated even though there were no other guests in the entire restaurant. A very odd start. Food & Drinks: Our waiter did a great job. He sold us on some poinsettia bubblies, which he described as "like a lava lamp, the craisins go up and down". After ordering, we were given some bread. The bread had cheese on top and was warm and delicious. About an hour after arriving, our food was on the table. Our table got grilled beet salad, soup of the moment: creamy tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons, vegetarian flatbread, braised beef short rib flatbread, poached Maine lobster roll, dry-aged filet mignon, and a mushroom & onion burger with cheese and bacon. I liked that my burger came with onion rings, cole slaw, and fries rather than having to choose one. I did not love anything in particular on my plate, but the display was nice. The burger was average and the fries were crispy. We were given a dessert menu to choose from with plenty of dessert options & boozy coffees. They all sounded very good. Three people got coffee and said it was very good coffee. I tried the creme brulee and it was very good. Overall, my favorite part about Country House was the decorations and my least favorite part was how difficult it was to make a reservation. read more

The place is pretty, but trying to charge us 70 dollars for 4 sodas and 4 refills is pretty embarassing for them. They dont post the price of a soda on their menu and then they ask if you would like a refill when you still have half your soda. Because it takes them an entire 3 hours to serve you you get excited when they offer to refill your watered down off brand soda only to be horrified when you find out they charge 8.00 for a glass of soda and refills are not free. Oh and Bob is mean to be honest. Bread was good though! read more

Meet the very personable Bob, the man who runs the place! He is a total gem! He is so sweet and truly caters to his customers. It felt more like Home than "house". Their food added to the ambiance with delicious "home style" "home cooked" meals. The killer tomato soup warmed my soul and the buttery brisket soothed my bones. His pumpkin cheesecake is frikken AWARD WINNING !! I don't even like cheese cake but the insisted his was different and omg was he right. I've been day dreaming about his cheesecake since. It wasn't dense or heavy at all! It was so light and airy and didn't put me in diabetic shock. Overall, 100% would go back and recommend to friends and family. read more

Big shoutout to the Country House! We threw my daughter's baby shower there in mid-January and it was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The food was delicious and the decor was festive and beautiful and the service was top notch. Bob and his staff really took the time to make sure every detail was exquisite. Extra points for serving a refreshing punch to our guests as they entered the restaurant! Each table was adorned with fresh flowers and everywhere you looked was like a magical winter wonderland. This place is amazing around the holidays! The actual restaurant is wrapped around with a pretty bow on the outside and absolutely beautiful inside! Each corner is decorated for the holiday and creates a classy and magical experience for the the diners. We got the holiday dinner menu which included escargot, beet salad, filet mignon, and braised short rib. All were exceptional. The dessert and drinks were great and the service was very attentive. So disappointed . We booked a reservation for the Holiday Lunch for a date between Christmas and the new year as a Christmas gift for our mom. At the time of reservation, we were told we had to leave a $25 per person deposit that would be applied to our bill. The night before our reservation, our father was admitted to the hospital. We called shortly after the restaurant opened ( more than 2 hours before our reservation time) to request to change our reservation date . We explained the situation and were told that the deposit was non-refundable AND non-transferable. The person we spoke was brash and quick to " hang-up" because he was busy. This deposit policy is not stated anywhere on the website ( a deposit is not mentioned either), nor were we told this at the time the deposit was made . No receipt or email documentation is provided for this charge. My credit card was promptly charged after the reservation was made, and then the restaurant charged me a second time the day after. They did call to acknowledge this error. Had we not been sitting in the hospital with a family member two days after Christmas , we would have had no intention to adjust the reservation. We fully understand that deposits can be non refundable, but the fact that they would not allow us to apply it to a future reservation is terrible. read more

I have actually never left a review for a restaurant before (good or bad). First, be prepared to leave a $20 deposit per person for a reservation. Also, if you need a highchair you have to request one with your reservation or else you won't have one (Which they did not ask/say). We arrived at 5:00 for our reservation and were seated promptly. The place is decorated nicely for Christmas. The food was pretty decent but honestly expensive for what it was. The service......The worst I have ever had. I went with my parents and my four children. Our first round of drinks came pretty quickly But then we're never offered a refill the entire time we were there. Also, when appetizers were brought out, they forgot my father's French onion soup and it never came. Also, when I order my children food, I ordered 2 grilled cheeses and 1 chicken tender meal. They only brought 1 grilled cheese so we had to remind them to was suppose to be two. Both were brought out barely warm. 3/4 of my children are young. All three decided to get upset at the same time because the food was taking forever. Bread never came. It was no more than a minute Before I took out my own snacks I brought to calm them down. Which worked very quickly (within 1 minute to get them all set up). A man (I think was the owner) walked over and said we would be asked to leave if we didn't get them under control. Wtf?!? I have never had that happen. I am a respectful person and if they were really causing a scene and I couldn't calm them I would've left. I was so taken back by how rude and abrupt he was that it pretty much ruined the rest of the evening. We responded that we hadn't even received bread after being there awhile and then suddenly he came back with bread in a flash. I have to admit it was a little of an over reaction but I was so overwhelmed by his rudeness that I started crying. He never came back and said anything but peeked back into the room twice as if to "check" to make sure my children were behaving. Needless to say we will NEVER be back. read more

I've had my eye on Country House for a while now. I looked it up and saw they had their Christmas decorations up until the end of January so I had to check them out last week for dinner! They did not disappoint!!!! Everything from the staff, decor, ambiance and the food was top notch!! My friends and I had the chicken dumplings to start along with french onion soup and tomato soup. The French onion was probably the best I've ever had! The tomato soup was also incredible and I was jealous I didn't get that one as well haha! The chicken dumplings were fresh and delicious! For our meals, I had the sirloin burger, my one friend had the tuna and my other friend had the scallops. I don't even like scallops and yet I tasted it and was impressed! The burger was so flavorful and the fries were definitely a great addition, house made and fresh! We had a few cosmos which were made perfectly and ended our meal with a snowman dessert that was fried ice cream with chocolate ganache. I cannot say enough about this place and I can't wait to go back for Easter! I heard the decorations are great then too! Our waiter, Zachary, was fun and energetic and was definitely a great time! After driving by Country House many times and hearing about their amazing Christmas decor, my friends and I finally got there for dinner on their last decorated weekend. Every single thing was incredible. It was hands down one of the most delicious meals I've had in a long time. Ordering from their special Christmas menu, first we shared chicken and lemongrass dumplings. Then we all had a soup. I had the French onion and it was perfect. One of the other girls had a tomato with grilled cheese croutons. Yes. Tiny grilled cheeses as croutons. How can you beat that? For my meal I had the tuna with ginger risotto and noodles on top. It was to die for!! That risotto was so creamy and had the perfect amount of ginger flavor that was want overpowering. The other two girls had the scallops and the burger. Both got rave reviews as well. The portions are large as well but they do charge a sharing fee if you plan on that. Of course we had room for dessert- frosty the snowman. Fried vanilla ice cream with a brownie on top and the cutest little top hat. No one was lying when they said how beautiful the Christmas decor was. It was really nice to have that one last taste of Christmas. The decor, the food (don't forget the spot on Cosmos as well) and the service all made for one of the best dinners in a long time. read more

We had my moms 80th birthday here, and couldnt have been more disappointed. I ordered the seafood platter, which consisted of fried shrimp, clams and cod. I asked for a little more sauce and was denied. So i had to eat the fried shrimp dry, and to top it off had nothing to wash it down with. Most restaurants keep a glass of water full. Not this place, and hard to order a drink. Fries had to be right out of the frozen food section of the local supermarket. To top it off, i couldnt even get a cup of coffee after my meal. What was supposed to be a great memory, turned out to be a memory of frustration. And they charge an arm and a leg for this wonderful service. Best way to describe this place.... pathetic. read more

I've enjoyed my visits to the Country House whenever I'm in the area. The decor is straight out of a home design magazine spread and the food presentation could win an award. Serving sizes have not suffered post Covid and you'll leave there full. Meat is tender and pasta is cooked to perfection. You won't regret a meat in this antique house built in the 1800s. With the prices they charge, one would think the quality would be outstanding. Unfortunately, that's not the case. The food wasn't anything special. Service was mediocre - nothing like going to a fine restaurant only to be greeted with "Hi guys!" from the young, inexperienced waitress. The decor is pretty but just a bit dated. The owner is not friendly at all. He was standing by the then empty bar when we were leaving. No "How was everything?" What a beautiful restaurant. The Christmas decorations were amazing. We went for a 2:30 seating and it was a price fixed menu. There were 7 of us in my party and it was my mother in laws birthday. They were very accommodating with my gluten allergy and the waiter went and checked on all of my concerns. I started with a salad and then had the best halibut ever. It was served over a lobster hash. Simply amazing. My only complaints, but I won't take stars off, is the bathroom could have been neater. Not terrible but definitely needed straightening up. The other thing was the hovering of the staff busing the table. They shouldn't be felt and when people are still eating don't immediately pick up the empty plates. Makes people feel rushed. Paid 25 dollars per person for a reservation of three people. On the day of the reservation at 3 p.m., I called to say my daughter went into labor and I was on my way to the hospital. I need to change my reservation to the following week. They said they would change my reservation but not credit the $75 already charged to my credit card. Do they really think I'm going to miss the birth of my grandchild? Needless to say, I will NEVER go back and I will tell everyone I know how inconsiderate this place is. read more

Now the food...the Calamari appetizer tasted like frozen food aisle box of calamari. The lobster roll came on a piece of white bread that was folded and fell apart when trying to pick it up. Owner/ manager is extremely rude, walked over and asked why we didn't tip what he wrote on the bill. The nerve of this guy. Maybe if your sever was a little more in tune with how to serve, asked for refills on drinks instead of having to be told 3x for the same drink, or if the food was not overcooked, soup like warm and salad was wasn't ice berg. Or perhaps the soda, that was filled to the brim with ice, didn't cost $8 a glass. The nerve of this guy. This place is subpar. Should not be charging 65$ a plate. read more

After living in the area for more than 25 years, we finally tried the Country House. Years of passing it and one prior failed attempt and we finally made it. Reviews were mixed so we were not sure what to expect, other than high prices. The restaurant requires a $25 deposit. Strange policy for a restaurant that was only 75% full, but fully disclosed and our choice. Great location. Less would be more when it comes to Christmas decor, but overall ambience was nice. I was expecting more Griswold Inn, CT less Target/Michaels Christmas decor. Serving team was not as attentive as you would have expected. Onion soup was not soup, but more like onion stew. $20 Caesar salad was laughable. Of the 7 of us, 3 thumbs down, 2 neutral and 2 good on the Entrees. Chicken Madeira was bland. Crème Brûlée was soup like. Check did not provide a credit for all 7 deposits and still water incorrectly charged to the table. Corrected quickly without issue. 25 years of curiosity satisfied. Left feeling disappointed, flat. No need to go back considering all of the other excellent choices in the area. read more
