Great experience! Staff was very friendly and attentive, drinks were great, food was solid. We walked in around 7:15 on a Friday and were seated immediately, opted for outside. Drinks came fast and cold, the wine glasses are very cute, a little less ideal for stem holders. Shrimp Cocktail - shrimp were seasoned nicely and cooked well, the sauce reminded me of the prawn marie rose sauce in England, really tasty. Burger - my husband loved his burger, he said it was delicious! Steak Frites - the fries and the sauce were delicious, the steak was tasty but it was really overcooked (see pic) I ordered medium rare it came very well done, but all good. We were extremely disappointed with our dining experience tonight, and unfortunately, the problems were entirely the result of a kitchen that simply failed to execute. The restaurant was not particularly busy, which made what happened even more difficult to understand. We ordered the tuna tartare, harissa cauliflower, truffle Brussels sprouts, steak frites, and steak au poivre. The tuna tartare arrived as expected, and once we finished it, it was cleared. Shortly afterward, the steak frites, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts arrived--but our forks had been cleared, and, more importantly, the steak au poivre was nowhere to be found. A few minutes later, our server came by to check on us. We explained that we were missing both forks and an entire entrée. That's when we learned that the kitchen had simply failed to fire the second steak. It then took almost 15 minutes for the steak au poivre to arrive. By that point, the steak frites, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts that had been sitting on the table were cold. What should have been a well-paced dinner had turned into a disjointed meal where 3/4 of our food was cold by the time the rest of the order arrived. To be fair, our server was apologetic, and the manager came over and apologized as well. The manager suggested that we return so they could "make it right." We declined. The bigger issue is that the food itself simply wasn't good enough to make us want to give the restaurant another chance. The kitchen's execution was poor, the timing was unacceptable, and the overall experience was very disappointing. We came in expecting a good meal and left feeling like the restaurant had failed at the most basic part of the dining experience: serving the food we ordered, at the same time, and at an appropriate temperature. Unfortunately, this is not a restaurant we would return to or recommend. For a restaurant representing a SoCal "chain" in Manhattan Beach, this level of execution is simply embarrassing. read more

We went right at four on a Monday, which is happy hour and martini Monday. They had a lot of drinks for $13 and if you buy one drink and two different food items, the three total items are $33. It was a good deal. We tried the fries and the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp cocktail had good flavor to it. The fries are standard. For drinks, I got the rosé, which was good. Been to all 3 locations now-- Venice, WeHo and MB. The ambiance is a little different in each place but all equally vibey. Dinner at MB last night was spectacular. The hostess was gracious, kind and warm. We were early for our reso so snagged the last 2 seats at the bar with Jack. Stefan spoke with us and as I shared about my recent promotion, kicked off our experience with 2 glasses of champagne!! We ordered the prawn cocktail and ceviche which are my 2 favorite things on the menu honestly. Then I had a dirty martini and my friend a Coucou sour. Literally sooo scrumptious! Omg no no no. This place was not it from the second we sat down. My friend sat in a pile of crumbs or possibly sand from previous people at the beach. I sat down and my water glass was noticeably dirty, as was my friends with leftover food items stuck to it. We asked to exchange it and the Waiter just snatched it and swapped it and didn't say a word. Then I look down at my plate and napkins and lo and behold the plate also had food crusties. I put it to the side and grabbed the plate from behind me because I knew that the waiter wouldn't have even cared. I am actually seriously concerned of the cleanliness of this place. The bathroom? Pretty weird decor but the gross part is that someone threw up in there and clearly the staff didn't care. It didn't go all the way down in the toilet because the handle was broke so I just peed on top of it and tried to keep flushing. Food came out super slowly even tho they rushed us to order everything because they were closing the kitchen. Didn't realize they closed so early so that's on us. Food was bland yet salty and chewy and fishy in ALL the wrong ways. I did not enjoy a single bite from the lobster spaghetti to the steak frites. The ketchup dipping sauce was honestly the best part. My friend's burger was ok and the other dish I don't even know what it was but my friend just stopped eating and took it home after saying it was super salty. Coucou was an absolute flopflop and I would never recommend coming here. This is not the 3 or 4 dollar sign establishment it wants to be. Our option was this or chilis and I wish we went to chilis. I went with my family for my birthday. The service and food was terrible. And we waited almost 45 minutes to get our dinner. When we asked our server where our meal was, she said "it will be here." What kind of response is that? She made it sound like someone needed to drop it off at the restaurant. Then when it came out, two of the three dishes were awful. The meat was chewy and crunchy. I'm not even sure how that's possible but it's true. Lastly, our server didn't check on us once after the meal was brought to our table. The manager comped us one of the meals, but given how bad the experience was that just doesn't cut it. On top of that, gratuity was included in our bill. Tips need to be earned by the server and in this case, she absolutely did not earn it. If you're going to include gratuity in the bill, then you better have stellar service. I highly recommend NOT going to this restaurant. read more

Stunning display of high cuisine... my friend, and I indulged in the wickedly, addicting, zucchini, beignets, and steak tartare to start. The guzzie'd up haute dog and burger for main, and finished with the sundae and chocolate mousse. All seriously scrumptious. Adorable! Great wine and pretty good food. What could improve: The set up feels weird. The Venice location feels French and quaint. The spacing of the tables here is awkward. The service needs more training. When prices are that high and gratuity is built in, it better be great and it was just ok. The waiter brought our second appetizer and left it on the table next to our previous appetizer plate that was empty, odd they didn't take the plate away. After appetizers, our steak frites arrived and we were sharing and had to ask for another steak knife. They knew we were sharing, so again weird we had to ask. Also the steak was a little chewy. They also never offered new plates between apps and entree. Lastly, I've been twice now around happy hour and they seat us and both times don't give us the happy hour menu, I have to ask. Coucou presents itself as a higher-end restaurant in Manhattan Beach focused on service and food. On our visit Friday evening (9/11, party of six), both fell short. Service was the bigger issue. Apps came out before our drinks did. When we ordered wine, the pour for tasting was nearly half a glass -- a small thing, but it set the tone. Getting our server's attention afterward was a recurring struggle; clearing plates and refilling water became something we had to flag down ourselves, usually met with annoyance rather than an apology. With a mandatory 20% gratuity built into every tab, it's hard not to notice the lack of urgency to actually earn it. Food was a mixed bag. The whipped farmers cheese and zucchini beignets were genuinely good. The steak frites, less so -- tough and disappointing for the price. We were also surprised by the a la carte charges tacked onto drinks, like an upcharge for an extra-dirty cocktail and another for cheese. For $1,000 across six people (including two bottles of wine), we expected more polish on both ends. Overpriced, inconsistent food, and service that didn't match the price point. We had an unfortunate experience at Coucou -- we sat for 15 minutes before being greeted, did not receive our drinks (which were fine at best) for another 20 minutes after that, and our food was brought to the wrong table twice. We spoke with the manager with kindness as two people in the service industry, and he comped our drinks as an apology. However, once our server was changed, the quality did not improve as there were minimal check ins and a lack of engagement. 20% gratuity was included in the bill and the price point was high, which made this experience all the more disappointing. We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday, and overall had a great experience. The food absolutely lived up to the hype. We ordered the zucchini beignets, fried olives, burger, and lobster spaghetti, plus the fries and soft serve for dessert. Every dish was delicious, and the cocktails were equally impressive. The ambiance was intimate, lively, and surprisingly full for a Wednesday night, which speaks to how popular this place already is. The only disappointment was the service. Since a 20% gratuity is automatically included, I expected a much higher level of attentiveness. We had to ask for water multiple times, service felt slow throughout the meal, and our table wasn't checked on as often as we'd expect from a restaurant at this caliber. As locals, we're really rooting for this restaurant because the food and atmosphere are fantastic. We went to Coucou for lunch on Saturday and it was lovely. We had a great waiter, Stephane according to our check, who was very attentive to detail. It's a little loud, but not to where we couldn't have a private conversation. Now the food. The food was enjoyable! It tasted fresh and balanced. Everything was perfectly cooked, and our waiter seamlessly provided more crostini for our farmers cheese and additional sauces for our fries, without us asking for more. The food is also photogenic if that's also your thing, lol. The drinks were strong but still flavorful. The bar looked very well stocked and the bartender was mixing martinis left and right which was fun to watch. I split 3 appetizers, an entree, and dessert with my husband and we both left full and satisfied. We will definitely return again and have told our friends to give Coucou a try. read more

My best friend and I went to Coucou for their happy hour and planned to stay for dinner last night. We were both excited at the prospect of a French bistro in MB and came prepared to treat ourselves and indulge in an elevated dining experience. However, we were disappointed to find that the level of service and attentiveness from the staff was deeply misaligned with the expected standard of a French restaurant with that price point. Our server did not approach our table until after 15 minutes of being seated and provided bare minimum service in terms of recommendations, engagement, etc. We put in orders for drinks and two appetizers each. Our first appetizer came promptly but we proceeded to wait about 20 minutes for our two French 76 drinks to come out. At this point we asked to speak with the manager and expressed our understanding as people who both work in the industry, but frustration with the service especially given the automatic 20% gratuity. We had come with the intention of ordering a couple of HH drinks, but did not get our first drink until 40 minutes after sitting down, when HH was already ending. At which point we decided against staying for dinner. Even with expressing our concern there was still a lack of engagement/checking in from our new server (our servers were swapped about halfway through) which was a disappointing lack in improvement of service. Our drinks were comped, which was a nice inclusion, but ultimately we left feeling frustrated that we cut our time short due to the subpar dining experience. This was especially disappointing because the food was tasty -- we loved the tuna tartare and zucchini blossoms. Coucou has great potential with its food as the centerpiece, but should consider hiring staff that has restaurant experience and more expertise in elevated dining. read more

Hate to leave a negative review this early in their restaurant life, but we just had such a bad experience here. Only reason I gave it two stars instead of one was because Yanni (manager) comped a chunk of our bill. We arrived about 10 mins early (no table ready, fine), we got sat about 10 mins after our res (fine), but everything after that was just flat out awful. My wife ordered an espresso martini that was borderline clear and we didn't say anything. The soup even came out somewhat on time and it was solid. But then we waited over one hour for our entrees. That is not an exaggeration. One hour. Our waitress went "on break" and never told us. We thought the man helping our table during her break was honestly the bus boy because he barely spoke to us. No one even looked our way. Finally the manager came over to check in and we were like wtf dude. He went to take a look for our orders and said there was a miscommunication and he "wouldn't have put the order in the way our waitress did," but, hey, the good news is we get a free sundae. What a joke. I mean it was literally 1 hr and 20 mins after we sat down for us (my wife and I) to get our entrees. Then everything was clearly forced out - too hot, too cold, fries not cooked, etc. It was embarrassing. I complained to the waitress one more time who walked away borderline laughing. Yanni, the manager, came over and got our drinks comped and our steak frites (borderline inedible when it was served). He gave me his card for next time but the rest of the staff was so bad that I couldn't not leave this review. Our res was for 9 pm btw, well after rush. Don't waste your time here. Came here on a Monday night a little before closing. Very soft atmosphere and the restaurant was very clean. I sat at the bar and was served by Jason who was super attentive and took the additional time and energy to explain the drink and food menu. It seems to be the standard trait they seek in every employee, He recommended the bone marrow and old fashion which far exceeded my expectations. Food and drinks were appropriately priced and a great stop on the way to the beach. Will definitely be returning as I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Empty tables everywhere, but apparently a child was where they drew the line. Wood fired shrimp cocktail, my god, the char flavor on that was simply divine! Braised short ribs, melt in your mouth spoon tender, seasoned just right, with an amazing reduction sauce and velvety mashed potatoes. Steak frites, cooked a perfect medium rare, dipped in their black garlic jus with the caramelized shallots, I wanted to go high five everyone in the kitchen and buy them all a beer. We really enjoyed having dinner at Coucou in Manhattan Beach. It was a busy Friday night, but my wife and I sat at the bar, where they offered full table service. We selected a nice bottle of French Pinot Noir to enjoy with our meal, and the food, wine, and service were all excellent. However, I was surprised when I received the check and saw that a 20% automatic gratuity had been added to the bill. I'm certainly not one to skimp on a tip, but I do feel gratuity should be optional, particularly when ordering a pricey bottle of wine. My fiancée and I came here for an early Monday dinner at 4:30 p.m. We were excited to try a new French restaurant in the South Bay, especially since the area could really use more places like this. We went in hoping for a special new local dining experience. Unfortunately, it did not quite live up to what we were expecting from a French restaurant at this price point. The overall atmosphere, service style, and small details did not really feel like the polished French dining experience we had hoped for. My fiancée ordered the steak medium rare, but it came out nearly raw. I had the gnocchi, which was fine, but not especially memorable. We had planned on ordering dessert, but the dessert option we were interested in was essentially soft serve, so we decided to skip it. We also learned that the happy hour drinks are half-price, but they seemed to be much smaller than standard-size drinks, so the value did not feel quite as good as advertised. The pacing of the meal was also very slow, especially considering how early we were dining and how quiet the restaurant was at that time. We finished our meal, but left feeling disappointed. For the price, we were hoping for more of a refined, white-tablecloth French restaurant experience. Afterward, we went over to Slay for dessert and happened to sit next to another couple who had a very similar impression. I truly wanted to like this place, and I'm glad to see new restaurants opening in the South Bay, but based on our first visit, I do not see us coming back. read more

It was too fishy, and too sweet - so the combination was weird. Also missing salt or lemon?! The steak frites dish were better but the steak came out cold meaning we ate it as soon as it came to the table but it tasted as if it's been out for 5-10 minutes. But, the fries were really bad! From the nice welcome at the front from Hayley and others, to the great bartenders (we sat at the bar), such a nice experience. And the food was really excellent. See photos.
