I booked a reservation at Cotenna based on the Michelin recommendation for my young daughters birthday dinner. We were very excited until we read some of the reviews left here on Yelp. Some reviews made negative comments about the service, reservations and the size of the restaurant with regard to seating. I can say from our experience we had great service from very friendly staff. Our reservation was for 7:15pm on a Friday night and the restaurant was gracious enough to accommodate us being almost a half hour late ( another review claimed that they did not honor reservations, this is not true). They honored, confirmed and accommodated. The comments that this place is small are true. I would say intimate. If you don't like small NYC restaurants, it's probably not the place for you. Personally, I very much enjoyed sitting behind the bar, and that the staff was always in close proximity. The best part of the experience was the food. Not the best service, but not bad food. I came here for a socially distanced dinner with friends last Saturday night and we sat outside in their cute patio area. The ambience was nice, but the waiter seemed to have forgotten about my food and so my (very polite) friends waited with their food in front of them for 20 minutes until mine finally came out. They briefly said sorry and that was that. It also took me a really long time to get the bill which on one hand is nice for NYC where they just want you in and out so that they can get the table to someone else, but on the other hand also annoying. I ordered the orecchiette with sausage and thought it was fine but a small portion. It was $16 which I guess is cheap for the area, but combined with the subpar service did not feel worth it. Really used to love the place so much that I would go out of my way to get a to go order whenever I was in the area. However, it really has gone downhill since I last came here back in December. Sad to say I won't be going out of my way to Cotenna anymore and I hope others are aware that not only are prices more now, but portions are less than half of the serving size. I gave the restaurant over a week to address it (called, e-mailed, fb messaged, etc.) and they've blatantly ignored me despite a server saying he took down my information and will pass it along to the manager. I ordered the rigatoni e gamberi to go and was beyond disappointed to find out the portion was literally less than half the tiny container. It was more of an appetizer than an entrée. Not only that, but the consistency of the dish was subpar as well. There were only a few pieces of shrimp, but half had the tails on and the other half had the tails remove. It was very disappointing to see how the tables were right next to each other and there wasn't any space between different groups. You couldn't even get out of your seat when you're sitting inside without having to push out the table. It was also very uncomfortable with a stranger right next to you with no elbow room. One good thing about the tables being so close are you get to see what they ordered, which helped us decide what to order. Regardless, the food was amazing. Found this spot a few years ago on Bedford in the West Village and have been coming back since!! Usually it's a date spot, but sometimes I like to spoil myself and have a ridiculously amazing lunch by myself.. Today, I had a delicious Vodka Martini, made with Kalamata Olive Juice (hence the red tint in color). Ate here Thursday night with my cousins. From Penn Station, I took the subway to Washington Square and then walked a few blocks to the restaurant. My cousin made a reservation and you definitely need to do so as this is a small restaurant. The 4 of us, 3 guys and myself were at a little table. Not sure how we made it work, but we did. The food here is tapas Italian style, small plates to share. For our first course, we ordered the mango and goat cheese salad - delicious, how do they get the mango so soft? And the goat cheese was warm and tasty. We also ordered skirt steak, lobster ravioli, and octopus. There was nothing left! For the main course, we ordered the gnocchi sorentina and some other meat dishes. (I didn't pay attention to those, as I am a vegetarian). I devoured the entire dish! The gnocchi were perfect pillows of potatoes, and tomatoes went perfectly with it. I was tempted to get a 2nd glass of rose, but decided not to as it was a school night! Half of the table was squished into the wall making it annoying if anyone had to go to the bathroom. The foods are reasonably priced compared to other NYC options and is very good! Our waiter was super friendly and made sure to keep all of our glasses full with wine! Our favorite dishes were the bolognese, lobster ravioli, truffle gnocchi, and octopus special! It's been a long time since I've been truly excited over Italian food - so many meals in the city at well-regarded Italian establishments are passable, even good, but rarely exceptional. Perhaps then there is an inverse correlation between quality and quantity, as Cotenna could not be much smaller in square footage, although the space is densely, and dare I say cozily, packed to the brim with as many chairs as will fit. On a quiet stretch of Bedford Street, the bar is inviting to passers-by. On my most recent visit, a friend and I ambitiously ordered five so-called small plates, which in fact are quite generous. These includes a black truffle gnocchi special, the texture of which was beyond delicate. The rigatoni with shrimp looked like an ordinary pasta dish with an ordinary tomato sauce, but the flavors were incredibly multi-layered. The garlic spinach was good (although perhaps could have used a bit more lemon), and the mushroom bruschetta was immensely crave-able. Of all the dishes, the eggplant melanzane appetizer, with a generous heaping of ricotta, was my favorite. An aperol spritz made the perfect pairing for a perfect meal. read more

What happened to Cotenna? I remembered my meal here fondly so I didn't hesitate to make reservations for my best friend's birthday. We were able to book through Resy for a few weeks in advance. They were booking rather quickly which just reassured my decision to choose this off the beaten path option vs. a mainstay like Barbuto (R.I.P). Fast forward to the day of our reservation Cotenna sends not one, not two, but FOUR confirmation text messages. Even Peter Luger's doesn't send that many confirmations. I took that as another sign that Cotenna is just as worth it as I remember it. TL;DR: It's not. Let's focus on the positives: Cotenna does starters well. The Caprino alle Erbe (warmed goat cheese in a red sauce) was delicious. The meatballs are also a solid option, but since they're only three it's best to split between two. Loved the flavor, but portions were not ideal for splitting. The space itself is gorgeous and inviting...when it's not packed to the gills. From an ambiance perspective alone this is a great date night spot. This is contingent on it not being busy. Which unfortunately is not the case 99% of the time. Good for business, not so good for the people spending money with the business. The negatives: How can your service be so snotty and elitist when the average plate is less than $16? We arrived five minutes prior to our reservation with empty bellies prime and ready for a fresh pasta feast. The host seemed visibly annoyed that we arrived early (anywhere else this would be on time). We were gifted with the seats right next to the door which brings me to my next point. While I mentioned the space as a highlight, it's also Cotenna's biggest flaw. Since they're hell bent on squeezing as many people in as they're legally allowed you lose any and all enjoyability. It's loud. It's cramped. The table next to you is basically sitting on top of you. Like, you have to scootch out of your seat for the table next to you to leave the table. Worst of all, since there's no standing room inside the front door is swinging wide open every few minutes. Lucky us, we were seated right next to the door. Which meant being blasted with bitter winter air every time someone walked through to discover there were no open tables for the next two hours. Like many small spots, they have a curtain to combat the cold chills, but since the hostess' computer is behind the curtain it's left open and rendered useless. The food was forgettable, honestly. By the time our main dishes arrived we were too distracted by being freezed out of our seats and by the host' attitude. Since we all ordered pasta we were asked if we'd like freshly grated pecorino. The answer is always yes. After five minutes of waiting to dig in we gave up on the idea. I guess we shouldn't have been surprised that after he asked, he never returned. Despite the mediocre food and service we decided to stay for dessert. You can't end a birthday dinner without dessert regardless of how mediocre it is. To add injury to insult, I had called in advance to confirm they still had the lava cake on the menu since it's the birthday girl's favorite dessert, only to find they made a last minute call to just offer the tiramisu that night. What a bummer to not have dessert on your birthday. I'm not sure what happened, but what I am sure of is that you should skip Cotenna. Olio e Piú, La Lanterna, and Malaparte are all within walking distance and are way more worthy of your money. read more

Got the black truffle gnocchi and vongole clam pasta. Both were really good! The truffle carpaccio on the gnocchi doesn't taste like anything in my opinion and the parts that taste like truffle has truffle oil so def do a good mixing as I think our table outside was slanted so prior to mixing the oil was only in parts of the pasta. The top of the gnocchi was crispy it was maybe broiled and was sooooo yummy and good with the gnocchi. I think their gnocchi "dumpling" itself in terms of texture and taste is really good (def can tell the dif between store bought gnocchi which I buy and theirs). TLDR; decent pricing, delicious food, amazing service My friend and I arrived early to our 7pm reservations and chose to sit at the bar. The interior is quite intimate, but the bar felt more spacious than a table seating. Our waiter was extremely friendly and patient as we considered wine options, he allowed us to taste a few before committing to the whole bottle. We ordered one app (baked clams), two pastas (spaghetti & meatballs and the pasta of the day - green tagliatelle with shrimp and asparagus), and dessert (ricotta cheesecake), which was the perfect amount of food. The clams were seasoned perfectly and lied on a bed of spinach drenched with lemon butter. The spaghetti & meatballs were well cooked and seasoned, also hard to beat with a $16 price tag. The pasta of the day felt slightly under seasoned / over cooked and not al dente (it broke fairly easily and was very soft) and the shrimp had tails on - I was indifferent to the shells but my friend would have appreciated them fully deshelled for a full hands free experience. My friend and I don't have a sweet tooth, but what's dinner without dessert in the end? Ricotta cheesecake hit the spot after the super buttery lush meal, paired perfectly with the last of our wine. Went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat for dinner on a Monday night. I was able to snag a reservation online the same day, but the place was packed when we arrived. For our meal, we decided to split a few dishes: Wild boar with polenta (3.5 stars): This dish was pretty good, though the polenta did not have a ton of flavor. Black truffle gnocchi (3.5 stars): This dish was also decent, but definitely was very rich--almost too rich and in need of something to break up the richness. Lobster risotto (4 stars): The lobster risotto was probably my favorite dish of the night as the lobster was cooked well and there was plenty of it in this dish. Cauliflower (3 stars): This was a pretty standard dish--nothing to write home about. Overall, this place serves up some decent food at a good price, especially for the area. One of the downsides of this place is that the tables are literally so close together that they have to slide them in and out in order for people to be seated, so there is not much wiggle room. What a great find! On Valentine's Day, my date decided to take me to this restaurant for dinner. When we arrived, we learned that all reservations were 30 minutes behind. There's a line of people waiting for a table at this cozy restaurant. While we were waiting, one of the owners (assuming he is) gave us 2 glasses of champagne and said that he wanted people to smile on Valentine's Day. I applaud him for being able to turn a negative experience into a positive one really quickly with a simple nice gesture. As we continued to wait, I observed the decor of the restaurant, they had a few tables with 2 seats, everyone was sitting elbow to elbow next to each other. I would recommend sitting at the bar, it's a big communal table, with a more private corner at one end that could seat 4 people. There were candles everywhere, and the lighting was dim, with bottles of wine on the wooden wall. The atmosphere is very romantic. On V-day, they filled up the whole ceiling with white and red helium balloons. We were lucky enough to be seated at the corner by the bar when we finally got a table after waiting for over 30 minutes. (The hostess was actually nice enough to remind a couple who had already finished their meal and paid to leave sooner so that we could finally be seated.) As soon as we sat down, we were greeted by our server who handed us a bottle (whiskey bottle) filled with water. Their menu was simple but with lots of special dishes. All dishes are under $15/dish. At first, I thought the dishes would be tapas-sized, but when the food arrived, the portion was good. We each ordered the slow braised wild boar pappardelle and we ordered the calamari to start. They made calamari the way I like it, not deep fried, but stewed with olives and tomato sauce. I highly recommend the Calamari in Umido dish, it was delicious, we finished the whole dish including the olives. I am not a fan of olives, but the olives in the calamari dish were so good. For the pappardelle with slow braised wild boar, the noodles tasted so fresh, and the braised wild boar wasn't salty. I would recommend ordering this dish. Just get it!!! For desserts, we ordered a tiramisu, it reminded me of the good tiramisu I had in Venice. Even better than the claimed to be one of the best Tiramisu in North America served at the Giano restaurant. As we got closer to the closing time of the restaurant, one of the owners started getting everyone in celebration mode. He offered everyone free shots of champagne at the bar, he lit up a sparkler and invited guests to join him in a group picture. The personality of this place really showed during the last hour of our visit - friendly and warm. I will definitely return to this place soon to try their other Italian dishes. P.S. One of the owners was able to put a smile on an impatient cab driver's face as he was blasting the horn at an Uber stopping in front of him. The Uber driver was trying to pick up a couple who just finished their meal at Contenna. My date and I witnessed the whole incident and saw that at the end, the angry and impatient cab driver smiled at the owner and told him "good night!" ATMOSPHERE: When people say it's small, they aren't lying. It's TINY with a bar and probably enough seats to fit 14-15 people. That being said, the atmosphere is very romantic with flickering candles on your table and low lighting, that italian restaurant feel. Definitely would be good for a date. FOOD: They have daily specials as well as oyster happy hour type items so just wait for the waiter to tell you what they have. BREAD - pretty good, your fairly typical rustic bread, it looks crusty but it's not that crusty. It's also not warm, but they serve it with fresh olive oil and the inside is soft. ORECCHIETTE - my pasta was overcooked and that is what disappointed me the most, wasn't al dente unfortunately. The sausage was decent, thinly sliced and about 5 pieces total. It's a very light sauce with tomatoes so it's probably a light butter/oil/tomato chunk sauce. The dish itself was decent, it had flavor but not that amazing. BLACK TRUFFLE GNOCCHI - this was one of the specials and you can definitely smell the truffle. The taste was pretty good, the sauce was creamy but not overly saucy which I liked. Some of the gnocchi was sautéed where it had a little crust on it, I actually liked that. But like any gnocchi dish after a while it just became too monotonous. This place is cute and cozy!! Maybe a little too cozy, given that the tables are a couple of inches apart, but it fits the vibe. All of the food was DELICIOUS, with the exception of the rigatoni with spicy grilled shrimp which was just okay. The special menu had a lot of great options, and I'd advise asking for something off-menu if you have something specific in mind. The guy next to us wanted a lobster dish and also wanted risotto, which was not on the menu, but they made a lobster risotto for him which looked delicious, but you have to know to ask. So I've been here twice and the first time we were all annoyed because they messed up our reservation and sat us like 45 minutes after scheduled. Went back with a group last night and it was great. Service was awesome, food was great, wine was good (they have a separate wine list that is more affordable so be sure to ask for that). Definitely would come back read more
