Craving Italian food, Basque-owned bar provided the best meal/ experience of the day. I have to say I walked in hungry, yet I don't think that has me exaggerating the quality of the experience, knowing it could. The space is small yet not crowded with tables and spacious tiled, bar space. The owner greeted me with a warm hello as I walked through the door and encouraged me to take a seat at the bar. He tells everyone who approaches a table, "that's your seat" in the most welcoming tone. The special of lasagna was what I was craving. I also eyed the loaf of bread on the counter and enjoyed a lightly toasted piece to finish off the sauce. The lasagna was creamy and savory, and with a lovely ring of tomato sauce and basil drops. I like lots of sauce so the owner brought me a side dish. Around me were many pleasant conversations, none of which were overpowering in the small space. Came here for dinner with a friend, very small high quality Italian restaurant in Fidi. I liked that considerably it was cheaper than most Italian places in NYC. Cotenna is now offering pizza nextdoor and it's called Briciola. We ordered for our group today and unfortunately, no one was pleased with it. The dough was undercooked, they forgot to add parmesan on top and for the bresaola topping - they give you 3 small 1/4th slices (exactly 3) for the entire pizza so the majority of the pizza doesn't have the topping. So, not only was the dough not cooked properly (you can see in the pics that it's under which is why it didn't puff up) and it wa a lack of toppings, but when we called, we didn't get any follow up. Disclaimer: This review is all about the Aperol Spritz which was perfectly made! Five stars spritz and a quick glance at a menu that didn't seem to contain a single plant-based option. I kept thinking this is the perfect spot for an aperitivo but even the snacky section of the menu is very meat and cheese-focused. I've been to Italy many times and I'm always able to find something at aperitivo time, so it is a little disappointing, I cannot lie. While I doubt I'd return to eat, I can't help but think I'd gladly duck in again for a spritz. I discovered this place last night on Bedford after going to Film Forum. I never think to look at what's around the corner from the theatre, but several great options open late-ish on a Saturday night. We sat near the doorway: the tables were otherwise pretty crowded together inside. There's seating outside as well. My friend and I shared the goat cheese and beet salad. It was very good: lots of beets. My friend ordered the Bolognese and enjoyed that. I had the hand-rolled gnocchi. I thought the tomato sauce could have used some kick. Everything here was delicious! It is a very intimate restaurant. It seems like a really nice place to have a date night or a small girls night. The waitress was also really sweet and tentative to us especially since we were a larger party. All of us loved each dish that we got, including all of the appetizers and the dessert. It's worth noting that tables both inside and outside are quite close to one another - but that's New York! Nothing on the regular on the menu was more than $16! Cotenna serves reliable Italian dishes and located at Bedford street near the sixth avenue. We came here during COVID when at the time NYC law restricted capacity to 50% indoor dining. They have many seating options here aside from their main tiny restaurant, they have outdoor dining on both sides of the street. Upon check in, we were lead to an annex restaurant across the street. We felt comfortable dining indoor since there were only four tables inside the unit. We started our dinner with gamberi e Aglio e olio; shrimp scampi on garlic and olive oil, it was so delicious to dip the homemade bread in olive oil with a piece of shrimp. We then had the costicine di Agnello; grilled lamb chops served with roasted potato. It blended well with our choice of a bottle of Montepulciano. For our entree, I chose spaghetti a polpette; spaghetti with meatballs and orecchiette salsiccia rapini; pasta served with Italian sausage, garlic, and broccoli rabe. We then concluded the dinner with ricotta cheesecake to share. The dishes from appetizer to dessert are simply delectable. We found that the service here was slow on Saturday night but we were happy that they were doing well that night. Do plan your visit especially if you have other pressing engagements after the dinner. Overall it was a lovely supper, we were not rushing and also not being rushed by the wait staff, we enjoyed every single dish that was served on our table. The time I had at Cotenna was pleasant, but there were a few things that concerned me. For one, the dishes that were used to serve the food were visibly chipped and discolored. This was present on more than one plate, so I could only assume all of their dishes were like this and I don't think customers would enjoy seeing their food being presented in such a state. The food was decent, but it felt like meals that I could have made at my home. The meatballs especially were delicious, but not in an elevated sense where I need to come back to try them. I can see myself buying frozen meatballs and cooking them at home myself to replicate how it tasted at Cotenna. I chose to give this restaurant a 2 instead of a 1 because of the customer service which was very good. The server was super charming and tended to my every need- making sure that I was satisfied with my experience. The view was also positive since I had a seat by the open window where I can watch people walk by without being fully outside of the establishment. I don't think I would return to this place because their food tastes like it is store bought, not freshly cooked and the utensils were not at its best quality. But with a little polishing, I think this can be a lovely Italian place to visit with friends. read more

I am a longtime fan of the restaurant group that owns Cotenna, Aria, Briciola, etc. They all have different names so it's hard to notice that they are owned by the same group and serve similar items, but it is great to know that wherever you are in the city, one is close by! Cotenna has a simple and straightforward menu with all appetizers, pastas, and sides with the same prices. Waiters are very knowledgeable about wine recommendations. On my most recent visit, we shared 3 pasta dishes. The macaroni and cheese with truffle was not too overwhelmingly truffley, but our favorite dish was the pesto pasta with artichokes. They had a sizable list of pasta options to choose from at $16. I got the Fettucine al Funghi and my friend got the Rigatoni e Gamberi. We were both really satisfied with our meals and they had a lot of flavors. I will definitely come back again because the food is amazing. The only downside about the place was that they doesn't have a sign that tells you it's Cotenna so it might be a bit difficult to find at first. I eventually found it by looking at one of the menus, but the outside is white and the door is red. I hope that gives you a better idea when you go! There was a large piece of shaved black truffle on the Mac as well. I found the noodles to be just a little too soft, but I like my pasta fairly al dente so this may be a matter of personal preference. I was looking for something decadent and heavy after a night of heavy drinking and Cotenna definitely supplied on that front. Wish the delivery fee were a little lower, but cest la vie. Our individual waiter was excellent, if overworked, as were the men busing the tables. The other waiter and the hostess just stare at you blankly when asked questions. They brought everything - salad, appetizer, all the entrees, table bread, out at once. One dish we ordered never came out.
