Reserved for dinner around 6:45PM and it was surprisingly not crowded for a Saturday night! Not a huge con but it was pretty cold that day but they kept the door open so I was freezing throughout my meal. I noticed the table next to me was also cold because they were wearing their puffer/down jackets even while eating LOL. We ordered: Polpo $23 Brussel sprouts with pancetta $12 Linguini $34 Tagliatelle $25 Pappardelle $28 The polpo came with one piece of octopus tentacle and a potato salad. It was pretty okay! The sauce on it was light and very citrusy. The brussel sprouts were my favorite! It's crispy and you can lightly taste the pancetta on it. The pasta came in a decently sized portion! It wasn't too salty. The lamb was soft and the pasta had good texture. It came with ricotta cheese and I felt like it was the perfect touch. Who can resist more cheese on their pasta?? Overall, food was decent and prices were OK. I just wish I wasn't shivering throughout my whole meal so I could've ate a little more comfortably. read more

Inadvertently found myself sitting across from my 12-year-old, in the metropolitan yet extremely comfortable and orangey environment that is Altesi Downtown on a Sunday night during Restaurant Week. I had a nice glass of Riesling--to celebrate the end of my dry January--and the $45 Restaurant Week dinner special, while my son had the lobster with Linguine and as much Roblox and YouTube as possible. The fried artichoke, served with a pesto sauce was phenomenal. Crispy, nicely flavored, buttery inside. Everything that you want an artichoke to be. In fact, while eating the artichoke, I might've been told, "This is the best restaurant you've ever taken me to." The perfect start to a wonderful meal or so we thought. The rest of the meal was underwhelming. The lobster linguine was not al denté, sauce was forgettable, and the lobster was rubbery. The shrimp in spicy tomato sauce with black pasta was spicy but still lacked flavor. I had to ask for parm. The pistachio tartufo was tasty but not as tasty I'm sure as the sold out chocolate dessert. I ordered chocolate gelato bc my son is a major chocoholic. It was ok, but not $15 for 1 scoop ok. Then the crab linguine, porcini mushroom ravioli and the eggplant gnocchi. All the pasta was so perfect ! Our cocktails were also amazing! My Mojito was made as a Mojito should be made with raw and sugar that's shaken and not some horrible sugary soda. It was delicious! I felt like I was sitting in Key West! Went here for restaurant week and it was disappointing. The food plating was beautiful but the taste was not that great. Starting with the burrata, very standard, everything that you expect burrata to taste like minus I think the raisins or something that was in it. Next the lamb, super soft texture but not very flavorful, pretty bland and the veggies were also quite bland -not the onions tho, they were great lol. We didn't even arrive that late but they had already sold out of the desserts for restaurant week so I settled for a raspberry dessert. This was the best part of the meal and I dont even like raspberry so I ate around it. I mean, my expectations weren't high to begin with but my friend's was and she was pretty disappointed. Located right on Spring Street, Altesi is easy to get to and with its corner location offers a very large outdoor seating area. We popped in on a Sunday around noon and brunch was in full swing. Fortunately we grabbed a table outside without a wait. Lovely outdoor tables and seating areas, if the is weather is nice, definitely take a seat outside. We skipped the brunch menu and opted to share three items off the regular menu. A sampling of the three oysters that were offered that day, Carpaccio di Manzo and a lobster asparagus salad. Everything was absolutely delicious. It was a lot of food, but it was light and didn't leave us feeling overly full. Great oyster selection, all three were thoroughly enjoyed. The carpaccio was melt in your mouth tender and well accents. But the asparagus lobster salad was the standout. Not only was it beautifully plated but the flavors were perfect together. There was also no shortage of lobster. Service was a little slow, they seemed to maybe be a little understaffed. That said, it wasn't slow enough that we got frustrated and the staff was very courteous. It can get a bit expensive when you start ordering multiple plates, but the pricing is on par with similar restaurants. WAYYYY OVERPRICED!! This review is for their $30 bottomless brunch. MOST expensive boozy brunch I've ever done and overpriced for what was offered. Be careful and make sure to read the menu carefully. The bottomless brunch is $30 (for DRINKS ONLY) and you must purchase a $16 entrée. I was under the impression you got drinks and an entrée for $30. So it was quite a surprise when we got the check. This surprise must be common because several servers were quick to run over to show us the precise wording on the menu. That being said, it was the MOST expensive boozy brunch I've EVER done! There were only 6-7 basic options to choose from and portion sizes were fairly small. The drinks were strong, but we had to ask for refills a couple of times....and there was no one else in the restaurant. I ordered the pizza which was thin crust with two over easy eggs on top; just average. My friend had the carbonara dish which she enjoyed. They offered complimentary bread which was served with some kind of hummus or white bean spread. Overall, I will not be back! I realize this is Manhattan and I am willing to pay for high quality food and service, but I do not think the quality of the food and the portion sizes were worth the prices. Skip it! read more

One of the best restaurant week dinners we have had! Fantastic friendly service (our water glasses were never empty and our plates were cleared quickly, but we were never rushed), great ambiance and fabulous food! The portions were the most generous I have seen for restaurant week (you usually feel like you are getting a half portion of a usual dish, these were complete dishes that come as they would if you ordered off the regular menu) and the food was simple but delicious. Everything was cooked perfectly. We had the meatballs and artichokes to start. The meatballs (2 big ones) were perfectly moist inside and came in a tasty tomato basil sauce with ricotta. It was extremely satisfying and exactly what you want when you order meatballs. The artichokes were nice and crunchy and came with a delightful pesto sauce. They also brought bread over which they first slice and toast in their wood fired oven. The bread had the perfect texture and was great for soaking up sauce. The main courses were gnocchi (perfectly soft pillows without being mush) and sole. The sole was divine, tender and moist inside, with a nice crunchy exterior. I had never had fish served with a balsamic reduction and it was lovely. It came on top of caponata. The gnocchi were sublime and came in a flavorful tomato sauce with lots of mozzarella. Dessert was a vanilla/chocolate mousse and a raspberry semifredo. The mouse was very pleasant, creamy and not too sweet. The semifredo was good, but a bit too sweet for my liking (any other person would likely love it, I am just not big on sweets). We had a wonderful meal and the overall experience left us feeling elated. We will absolutely be going back outside of restaurant week and highly recommend it if you are in the area. read more

This place does a lot right, especially around the outdoor dining experience. On a Wednesday night, we got a table for two immediately and sat outside. At our table, there was plenty of distance between the table and the those walking by. Our server was attentive; there always seemed to be a staff member outside in case we needed anything. Polpo - The octopus was really tasty, with a satisfying crunch. The tomatoes and beans were nice additions as well, serving basically as edible garnishes, which cut the saltiness of the octopus and brought a more refreshing element to the mix. Tagliatelle - The pasta here was really good. There amount of lamb in the dish was abundant. The tender pieces fell apart easily with just a fork. The sauce was delicious as well. While I am blanking on the exact taste, lamb was woven throughout, making that the domination flavor. Finally, the ricotta cheese pulled the whole dish together and made it creamy. The cheese here really made all the difference and boosted this dish quite a bit, as the pasta and lamb sauce on their own would not have been as enjoyable without the refreshing cheese dollop. The ambiance was super chill, which was awesome after a long day. There were only about five patrons so my food came out pretty quickly and it was fresh. I ordered the fettuccine and sprouts on the side. They were equally delicious. The Alfredo sauce was just right. The Brussel sprouts had small pieces of pancetta that added an awesome flavor. Went here on a Wednesday night for dinner with friends. To be honest, while this place has pretty decent presentation for the food, the food itself was pretty meh and I've definitely had better service at other restaurants. When we sat down, we saw other people have complementary bread as an appetizer for free like other Italian restaurants but our waiter forgot to bring us some and we had to ask. The focaccia bread given had pretty decent taste, but it was on the dry and crumbly side. Definitely average focaccia at best. Tagliatelle ($22)- For the price point, it's pretty decent since it is much cheaper than other pastas in the city and it was a good amount of pasta as well. However, the flavor was pretty average not memorable. The pasta itself was pretty decently cooked and the lamb shank was also pretty good. However, the sauce was very lackluster and was more on the bland side- almost as if they just bought red pasta sauce from the local grocery store and dumped it onto the dish. They were open pretty late on a weekday night and had this nice open concept inside/outside dining. As for the service, it was pretty slow despite there not being many people. The presentation of the food was also not great and low effort. Bread is complimentary but you have to ask for it. Fettuccini ($22) - this had a light truffle flavor that was pretty fleeting. The peas were a nice touch and the pasta itself was cooked to al dente. However, I felt like it didn't have much flavor so it was pretty forgettable. Tagliatelle ($22) - I tried this as well and it kind of tasted like regular tomato sauce, nothing special. Presentation is a lot better on this one though. A decent choice for pasta. We ordered two Fettuccini dishes, Tagliatelle, and Tagliolini Neri. The Fettuccini tasted pretty good, my friend thought the Tagliatelle lacked flavor, and the Tagliolini Neri tasted like regular red sauce pasta. We saw the bread was complimentary for other tables, but we had to ask for it and there were no sides like some of the other reviews said. The focaccia given was really dry and cold. The actual restaurant interior was quite nice, I liked how the indoor restaurant seating opened up to the outside searing as well so we could also get fresh Overall, the pasta was nothing special, and the portions were not very big. Each dish cost us $22 and after tax and tip, it was $30 per person. As a self-care treat I trained to NYC for the day from BWI. Planned to see Edward Hopper show at the Whitney and pop into my favorite boutique whose only US shop is in NYC. I knew it was going to be chilly but I dressed like I was running a 10 miler and the sun helped a lot. In between the museum abd boutique, I realized I had not eaten all day and knew this was a challenge! My husband and I are still masking and not eating inside restaurants. However, NYC being NYC, there were lots of options in street 'cabins' that are not technically indoors. I was attracted by ALTESI. I was their first customer and I asked the waiter if they would serve me outside. 'No problem,' he says and seats me outdoors in their streetside shelter and promptly turned in the heater. He could o have been more charming and more accommodating! Plus, it was Restaurant Week and the prix fixe lunch was $30. I couldn't decide between two appetizers and asked if they could be my starter & entree. He kindly complied. Their bread was warm and crusty and served with some kind of chickpea spread (I think). The calamari was hot, crispy, and deliciously light with sauce that had a wee bite. The mussels were absolutely fresh & sweet, covered in a marinara sauce. My only criticism was that that sauce was bland. However, because everything else was so perfect, I felt they merited 5 stars! Kudos to this restaurant & waiter who had no idea how much joy and sense of normalcy he brought into my life today. It's the little kindnesses and commitment to excellence that are enduring. Mushroom Pappardelle is a must! All of our food was great but the Pappardelle was truly special - I would come back here just for that. Problem was that we were seated at a table from which I could see the toilet. Like, looking straight at the toilet from my seat. I don't know why the bathroom door was open for the entirety of the meal or why there is even a table so close to said bathroom but it was rather off-putting. Also, on two separate occasions staff brought trash bags out from the kitchen to the street through the side door that is right next to my table. So I was seated by the toilet and had two trash runs pass by. Restaurants have to take out their trash somehow and I totally get that. It didn't ruin our meal, I think I just happened to get the worst table in the restaurant SO make sure to request a table in the front! read more

ENTRANCE - there are no hosts so entering we waved down a bus who let us sit at any of the 3 outdoor tables that existed. A server quickly came to bring menus, wine list, pizza menu, and pre-fixe lunch menu. AMBIANCE- a bit on the small side like all the places on the block so my advice is try to get a reservation if you plan to eat during peak times. DECOR- really very modern looking inside and very different than their rustic looking neighbors. SERVICE- the service was ready willing and able. Really on top of what was needed visually. Not particularly engaging but I think this is a language Barrier (Spanish vs. English). LUNCH MENU - not a large variety of choices but a bit more non traditional items. More Nuevo Italian I'd say. Tried the scallops as an appetizer and was more than pleased. Seared perfectly (albeit only 3) and came with a delicious apple and barley salad that was 5 star. My entree was a mushroom parpadella in light cream sauce that was really good. As I don't care for thick cream sauces I still tried it being advertised as light. It met my light expectations. Wife tried the pizza option which came as a thin crust flat bread. It was good my only note is that the crust while cooked was soft in the middle making it hard to pick up as a slice. VINO - not a particularly large or great listing but adequate DESSERT- didn't try so you are on your own with this one. PRICE - definitely not what is advertised. Two appetizers, one entree, one small flat bread pizza (which was $20), one bottled water and 3 glasses of wine came to $185 with tax and tip. For 2 people that's a $$$$ but the food is very good so well worth the investment. read more

After seeing a video online of the beautiful fried Mozzarella at Altesi, I booked a reservation for dinner on Valentine's Day. My rating for dinner at Altesi is 4/5. My boyfriend and I arrived on time for our reservation and were immediately sat at our table. The staff were wearing masks and were very welcoming. I was also very happy with their music playlist- which consisted of some of the best love songs from the 90's and early 2000's. We did, however, feel slightly cramped in the table we were sat at because it was in the corner of the restaurant. Luckily, the table next to us was empty most of the time so it wasn't a dealbreaker for our stay. They provided a pre-fixed dinner menu, a wine menu and cocktail menu so there were plenty of options. For drinks we ordered the Lychee Martini and an original Mojito. Both were delicious and strong! For appetizers, we ordered the Mozzarella in Carozza (Traditional fried Napolitano mozzarella in a tomato cream sauce) & Classic Caesar Salad. The fried mozzarella was crispy on the outside and the mozzarella tasted fresh. It was a nice starter, and is perfect for pictures, but I do wish it was a bit saltier. The Caesar was simple, delicious and well-dressed. I loved the freshly shaved Parmesan and homemade dressing. For our meals, I went with the Gnocchi con Melanzana Arrosta (Potato dumplings with roasted eggplant, fresh tomatoes, and mozzarella). The gnocchi was noticeably handmade and perfectly cooked. I really enjoyed the rustic flavor and the melted mozzarella was the perfect touch. On the other hand, my boyfriend was a little indecisive with his dinner choice, so he asked our waiter for a suggestion. He was offered the Braised Short Ribs with Truffle Mashed Potatoes and went with that choice. My boyfriend said the ribs were good and tender and that he enjoyed the mashed potatoes. I also tasted his mashed potatoes and thought they were delicious, as well. Lastly, we decided to end with a dessert and our waiter suggested the Chocolate Mouse Cake. I would rate the cake a 3.5/5 because I think a berry sauce or side of ice cream/gelato would have elevated it. All in all, it was still good and not too sweet. I came to this restaurant when I was really hungry, and I left completely satisfied. To start, the bread is amazing. The crust is perfectly crisp while keeping the center soft and chewy, so already, my meal was off to a great start. I ate the squid ink tagliolini with shrimp and a spicy tomato sauce. We then had an appetizer of mozzarella in carozza (think fancy mozzarella sticks with a tangy tomato sauce). I had the Tagiolini Neri con Gamberi which was a black ink pasta with shrimp and a tomato sauce. The shrimp were excellent and the sauce was slightly spicy but no where near overwhelming or too hot. My mom had the ravioli which had the perfect amount of mushroom/ truffle flavor without it being overpowering. My sister had a Margherita pizza and the sauce was slightly sweet and extremely tasty! Popped by Altesi for a weeknight dinner date. I love exploring NYC to find italian gems, and after dining here... I do not consider Altesi one of them. The menu features italian staples: calamari, octopus legs, bruschetta, pastas, pizza, etc. I went ahead and tried: - Endive salad - Octopus Leg - Eggplant Gnocchi - Black pasta with Shrimp Overall, all dishes fell short of expectations except for the Octopus Leg which was beautifully charred and delicious. The salad lacked texture as all ingredients were shredded into thin slices. The gnocchi tasted akin to frozen ones you would purchase from Trader Joe's. The black pasta had a nice spicy kick, but unnoteworthy as a holistic dish. On top of this, prices here are on par with NYC fine italian restaurants... ~19 for octopus leg, 20+ for pastas. We were lucky! It was surprisingly good. The meatball appetizer was tender, and the fresh ricotta that came with it was well made. The margarita pizza was thin crust, soft, chewy with a bit of a crust, hard to do. The atmosphere is nice, not too loud, and good for groups. Came here for Sunday supper with the folks and had a great meal! Margherita Pie We started with a thin crust Margherita pizza which was super thin but tasty. Polpo This was a great starter. This was one of the best polpo that I've had to date. It was very tender without it being mushy and soft. The tentacles had a slight crisp (not burnt which I don't like) which was enjoyable. It sat on a bed of peppers and onions. Lamb Chops My dad had this and it was a very decent portion. Chops were not gamey at all even been though I don't mind gaminess. It was cooked to medium perfection. Even my mom who is super picky enjoyed some of it! Tagliolini Hubs had the spicy Tagliolini. It came with large prawns and flavored with slight enjoyable kick. Pappardelle with Mushrooms and Truffle Sauce Mom's Pappardelle was light and tasty even though it was cream based. Cacio e Pepe While not on the menu they made this for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this! Pasta was perfectly al dente. Creamy not overwhelming but still full of peppery flavor. Yummo! Service was very friendly and accommodating. Seating was comfortable. Price point was mid range.
