Eggs royale and (not fresh) orange juice
Yordon D.

I'm not one to bash a restaurant quickly but when something isn't right I do like to give a quick shout out so here we go: slightly hungover I came to this place for eggs, when I noticed they had fresh orange juice as well, I asked to confirm is it actually fresh, as in squeezed here. The reply was: yes very fresh. It didn't take me half a sip to realize this is orange juice from the pack, just with extra pulp. I stopped caring about my non fresh orange juice as I write this but the betrayal is still kind of bothering me... Also very attentive they brought over complimentary filtered water, which to me, tastes like regular tap water. Ok enough snobby comments, the eggs were good!

After a couple of hours punting on The Cam some food and a cold refreshment or two was top of our agenda. The centre of Cambridge is always pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon but in August it gets full to bursting point and as we had not taken the precaution of booking a table at a restaurant we were at the mercy of the gods. As we wandered through town we came upon Bridge Street which is home to a trio of chain, bistro type joints; Café Rouge, Chez Gerard and Cote. Of the three Cote would be my first choice and fortunately the Cambridge branch, situated on a nice corner site, is a large one and they soon found us a window table for four. Decorated and furnished in classic modern bistro style it's a very light and airy restaurant which is in a great location for a bit of people watching should the conversation flag. On the menu you will find something to suit all tastes at a reasonable price; starters are around £5/6 while mains range from circa £10 to £15. We kicked off our meal by sharing a heritage tomato salad and some very tasty calamari which were plump, fresh and came encased in a crispy batter which just melted in the mouth. For our main course my old pal Bernard and myself had the rib-eye steak with roquefort butter, which came with some crispy fries, which had a nice crunch, and a garnish of watercress. Our steaks arrived cooked as ordered, medium rare, having been properly rested and sporting a good looking char. Nothing to win any culinary awards but a very decent steak frites nonetheless. The ladies both had the chicken which also got a very favourable reception. The wine list is pretty well put together with plenty of choices which will not break the bank. We were drinking the Sauvignon Blanc Le Place and the La Garenne Syrah; both were very acceptable and went down well. We left after a very pleasant couple of hours feeling that we had been well looked after, with our hunger and thirst sated and our wallets only a little lighter.

The grilled plaice.

The recently opened Brasserie menu seemed better value and more generally appealing. The location is good, in the yard behind Odell's hardware store. In addition the main restaurant area there is some outside seating in the paved yard area. Shortly after we arrived we benefitted from someone from the kitchen, presumably the owner, swearing to his staff asking them if they'd asked the customers if they had used the car park. We gather their had been a problem with a customer leaving their car late, at which point the car park is locked. Whilst we may have benefitted from the warning about the car park, we didn't appreciate the language and it got the evening off to a bad start. The meal started with a complimentary amuse-bouche: cold courgette with some herbs and spice sprinkled on top and a small flower. Unfortunate the soup, and the heavy home-made roll that it was served with, were both disappointing. Our first course was Brie Parcels (£6) which had rather soggy pastry and a very over-dressed salad and scallops with cod cheeks (£9) which was much more successful. The mains were a cap rump steak (£18), which was nicely cooked with triple-cooked chips, and a double cooked pork dish (£11) was nice, but rather dry in the middle: the accompanying sauce was good, but unfortunately there wasn't enough of it. Puddings (£7) included a rather nice soufflé, but the pastry on a pear frangipan was thin at one end, thick at the other and very chewy. Overall it was a disappointment, which seems a shame: some elements were very good, but the food was disappointing in places and at these prices that shouldn't be the case. We'll probably come and try it again in 6-12 months time, and hope it has got into its stride.

First time I have a take in roast pork dinner, with a root vegetable purée I just wish there was more if, the second time I had fillet steak cooked to perfection so the knife glided through. Will defiantly return.
