Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to visit The Old Fire Engine House during that weekend so I resolved to visit it if and when I was ever back in Ely, which happened in August 2016 when I was in Ely with a choir from Belfast, singing in the Cathedral. I had arrived a day or two before the official start of the choir trip and visited The Old Fire Engine House on my first evening, very lucky to get a table for one on a Saturday without booking! I like to see game on a menu and opted for the pigeon casserole, in which the pigeon was on the bone. Delicious meat it was, even if difficult to handle as it rolled around in its juice. The vegetable side dish was particularly good and well-presented. For dessert, I had the apricot and almond crumble, which I happily salted, having not salted any of my savoury food. It was already very tasty and well-above average as a restaurant sweet before salting but I have no regrets about adding the salt, which really maxed-out the flavour. I tried my best to encourage others in the choir to visit this restaurant at least once during the week. I'm not sure if anybody did or not. I certainly regret not fitting in a second visit of my own!

I enjoy visiting fish and chip shops when in England because back home in Northern Ireland the standards are generally poor in comparison when dealing with battered products. In NI we are accustomed to thick, heavy batter with a hard outer shell at either end and often a layer of dough underneath. In England, I can be fairly confident about getting very light batter which is neither hard nor undercooked. The Fish House in Ely definitely met my expectations very favourably and if my stay in Ely had been longer, I would most definitely have returned!

I had a Stilton ploughman's lunch followed by a Fenland Sticky Cake to which I added some clotted cream. I must say that I liked the Fenland Sticky Cake enough just to go back another day to remind myself what it was like and yes, I still liked it as much the second time. I even got more clotted cream second time round than first!

I placed an order for a main, rice, two soups and a mixed starter for two. Red Flag 1: The food was ready for collection within five minutes of the order. There is no possible way a main, rice, two soups and the mixed starter were prepared and cooked fresh, it was barely enough time to microwave it all! I picked it up and brought it straight home for me and my son to have dinner. Red Flag 2: As we portioned it up, I noticed some of the mixed starter looked like it was recooked leftovers; I took the less appetising looking ones. Within 24 hours I was violently ill, with food poisoning, to the extent that there was blood in my vomit. This lasted several days with me eventually being hospitalised, at which point I had not been able to eat any solid foods for 48 hours due to extreme nausea, etc. and I had only been able to drink with the extensive use of antacids. I had eaten absolutely nothing else that could have caused the food poisoning. When I was hospitalised I was put into my own room with a great view and nice 1970's ambience to it. Clearly someone decided to save a few pence and recook some leftovers, rather than throw them out just to save a few pence. I have had many takeaways from here, with them all being great food, but the risk of food poisoning means I will never eat food from this restaurant again.
