That would have really made it as I would have dosed quite liberally on the stuff. Sitting al fresco provided a wonderful view for the holiday snaps and the service was excellent. Wireless is free and surprisingly fast (12Mbps download, 768kbps upload), but disappointingly unreliable; if you don't know how to bypass a DHCP server by sniffing network traffic and then manually configuring an IP address, then don't expect it to work for you. There is no sign of available power. Despite the "free wireless" advertised in the windows, this really isn't set up to be somewhere you can work comfortably, which leaves me wondering why it stays open all afternoon.

It's got strange live music, a pool table, a beer garden, free newspapers, a small but decent selection of beers, seating on the street, bar billiards (sometimes) and... thousands of pigs. That's right - this dark but warm little pub is brimful of random pig toys, pig posters and pig sculptures. It adds a unique atmosphere to an already well-known atmospheric pub. Being only about 20 houses away, you can trust me that this is a true local gem. After 5 on most nights you'll find this place packed with drinkers who can't be bothered to go home just yet or catch the train home to the villages. Even if it's near-freezing out you'll still see us taking our beers out and sitting on the grass by the BBC next door so that the smokers can smoke away. And on a hot summer night - it's just perfect. No need to go home until I get thrown out.

However, for anyone who has traveled through Europe and/or has a reverence for the sacred nectar that is Belgian beer, this pub provides service with a most disrespectful sin. Allow me to explain. One of the glories of drinking beer in Europe is the service. Each beer is typically served in its brewery-appointed glass. Some are even served pair with small snacks to complement the beer. This takes the simple act of having a beer and turns it into an experience of greater depth and enjoyment. The Maypole, however, doesn't feel it should conform to this practice. Instead choosing to serve some of the world's greatest beers without the care to serve them in the proper glass, even though they have them. It feels wrong. Sure, some may argue that serving a beer in any style of Belgian glass meets the requirement, but for me it doesn't. For example, my local pub had a Belgian night a couple years back and even for just that one night, they acquired the proper glasses for each beer and served them accordingly. Surely The Maypole, with its reputation as a source for Belgian beer on a daily basis, could easily match the effort my local pub made? Surely. The Maypole is disrespecting us and the beer with each glass it pours. We all deserve better.

The history fact of this pub is that it used to be a house lived in by a guy who was the rowing champion of the Thames.
