If you're looking for a fantastic, high quality, meal in Cambridge look no further! Our meals were excellent as were the drinks and service! We ordered the trout and rib rye and both were cooked and seasoned to perfection! We sat upstairs near the bar and the ambiance was very nice! We did arrive during off-hours (around 3pm). There are a bunch more tables downstairs but when I walked down there it did feel a little chillier. Would highly recommend for a fancier dinner! read more

My son & I came in for lunch and the food was very good! I had the butler steak and my son the beef burger, we both loved it all. The Picpoul was delicious!! Service here is hit or miss.. some are attentive and some aren't. The food likewise is hit or miss. I had the vegetarian pie, which was pretty good. The vegetarian gravy isn't as good as I assume the meat gravy would be, but that's to be expected. My friend got the mussels. First it came with no sauce. They took it back and returned it with sauce but without the bread. Finally she got the bread on a side plate. It was tasty, however the last few mussels tasted off and she ended up sick all night. Do not get the sticky toffee pudding. The cake was too soft, crumbly, and buttery. It was not sticky at all. Don't waste your calories on this dessert. read more

I dropped by for Sunday brunch. I chose the lamb, which was decent; however, the baked potatoes were likely prepared either earlier or the previous day and had been reheated. They were rather tough on the exterior and almost dry inside--not the best of flavors, so I didn't finish them. Also, I do prefer my greens crisp, but the carrots were overcooked, and even though I had a sharp knife, they were quite difficult to slice! I wouldn't return for Sunday brunch as we've had better meals at other spots in Cambridge. read more

A great end to a fabulous day. After walking around Cambridge, visiting unlimited colleges, the Botanic Garden, the Fitzwilliam Museum, we had to find a nice place to end our journey and satisfy our hunger. We came across The Chop House and seeing from outside the dishes being served, we were sold for it. The place from outside looks small, but they have a big space downstairs, so don't be put off to go in if you see the place full. I decide to try something different and new. While their menu is not too varied, you have where to choose from, We started our meal with crackling pork and cheese balls. This is not for anybody, but it is worth trying if you are adventures. My dish was a Beer Braised Ox Cheek. Never had Ox before but been told that it should be really tender. And than the dish came. And I had a taste. And suddenly I was in heaven. The meat was so tender that it was melting in my mouth, it was heavenly. I would recommend to try this dish. Two things did not agree with: 1) the meat comes fully covered in gravy. While I like gravy, I would rather have it separately served so I can put on the meat as much as I like. 2) the salad that it comes with it, while by on its own its really tasty, it does not go with the Ox. But this is only my personal opinion. :) As a whole, I enjoyed the meal and would definitely go back there if I will be in Cambridge again. read more

When in doubt, I tend to ask the waiter/waitress for their opinion on what I should get. I was desperately torn between what could surely be good - the Sausage and Mash - and something a little bit more out of my comfort zone - the Braised Ox Cheek. Waitress recommended the Ox-Cheek. All right... Let's do this... It. Was. Amazing. One of the most tender cuts of meat I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. That, alongside the perfectly flavoured horseradish mash... I might've died, it was so good. If I'm ever up in Cambridge ever again (and at this point, I feel as if I might just go to visit this place again) I know where I'll be going for lunch. read more

This place is awesome! The restaurant looks very small at first, but the top (ground level) floor is only the beginning. Most of the restaurant is downstairs through a series of tunnels. The staff was great. I don't remember the waiters name, but he remembered all of our orders without writing them down (we had a group of 11), and didnt make a single mistake. The food was delicious and unique. I had a Seared Wood Pigeon salad and Mint Shank of Lamb. We all got something different and passed it around and it was all delicious. You can tell the ingredients are fresh. Although the prices were a bit steep, this place is definitely 5 star. More restaurants in the U.S. need to operate this way. read more

My second time in Cambridge in two months and my part once again gravitates toward The Eagle. Not that we didn't stop at more interesting places along the way, but there's something to be said about having a non-challenging tourist-y place in the middle of a foreign land where you can sit down and have a beer while you think of better things to do. One of those better things is right next door. For as much as the neighborhood is littered with stores selling postcards and other stores selling fudge (side observation: does anyone every voluntarily eat fudge when they're not on vacation?), the Cambridge Chop House is a decidedly un-touristy place, featuring modern takes on British food that go a long way to breaking whatever stereotype might still exist about British food, and whichever nearby establishments might continue to perpetuate it. The menu is littered with odd and interesting words, and I did my best to try as many of them as possible, beginning with the grazing plate to share with the table. The star of the plate is perhaps the haggis fritters, though the name was still a little too much for the more trepidatious of our table to indulge. More for me. The fresh pork cracklings were another pleasure, though really nothing on the plate, from the smoked duck breast, to the beetroot cured salmon, to the local cheddar, went to waste. Pork collar, like pork jowls, is a part of the animal that sounds like it shouldn't be very good, but with enough time and care can be made delicious. Served with colcannon and roasted beets, it was a straightforward dish, but one that was hearty, well-prepared, and true to its heritage. It was an excellent way to end a day trip to Cambridge peppered with plenty of walking and imbibements. I don't know if Cambridge Chop House is the best restaurant in the city, but it by far exceeds what I otherwise expect to find in that part of town, and is an excellent place to try some contemporary British cooking while in the area. read more

This place is so amazing. Everything about it is great, so I recommend booking a reservation because otherwise you will not find a table. Upstairs or downstairs seating is equally amenable. With upstairs, you get the beautiful view of the street and King's College plus lots of natural light, and if you're downstairs, it's very cozy. The staff is helpful and constantly swarming due to the sheer amount of people always in the restaurant. My water glass was never empty, and when I finished my cider, the waitress saw in no more than sixty seconds and was over asking if I would like another. This is not to say that they rush you. They only come over if you gesture for them, have an empty dish on your table, or in the beginning to get you settled in. The food is a little more expensive for the area during dinner, but lunch is fine pricing. I paid 14 pounds for their Sunday roast, and it was a great size. It was also fantastic. It was pork with butternut squash, potatoes, red cabbage, and applesauce. I would say "Just like Mom makes," but this was BETTER. Definitely will be returning. read more

I've been trying for ages to find a nice restaurant in Cambridge, that's not just another chain. Having found this place on Yelp, we gave it a try. The food was just delicious. I had the slow roasted pork, the portions were huge and the meat was so delicious it just fell apart. My husband had the steak and ox tail stew which just melted in the mouth. The food was all local sourced and tasted really fresh, especially the perfectly cooked vegetables. The beer was locally brewed and tasty (so I'm told, I was driving) The prices were London prices rather than Cambridge, but it is in the main tourist drag, so that's to be expected. The food was so worth the money. The service was excellent. When I next visit my home town, I will be going again. But next time I'm not driving and trying the beautiful selection of wines. read more

The steak is always wonderful, sauces are spot on - there are non steak options but I'm not one to go to a steak restaurant and not have steak... Whilst the food was lovely the service wasn't Seems they have a lot of new staff waiting and it becomes very frustrating to have to wait over 20 minutes to get a drink. Oh sure we got water fairly quickly. But I noted we had been sitting for over 20 mins and my husband's beer and my wine had still not arrived. Waiter asked if I was ready to order my main course. Geez get me my drink first please then come ask me. We ordered an appetizer in the hope it may bring out out our drinks faster. The muscles were bloody good and finally yes my wine arrived. Way too warm. It tasted like it's been sitting on the stove warming up. Very unpleasant. But I drank it anyway and tried to order another but they ran out of that style. Smh. I ordered a different brand wine. Same issue. Was terribly warm and so not how red wine should be drank. The wine makers would be furious knowing it's being served up at that temp - now that's the managers fault Get the meal and whilst my wine was warm my meal was not. And half of it was missing. Finally my other half of my meal came a good 10 minutes later, but by this stage I was so disappointed I felt we were guinnie pigs for training days but still required to pay top dollar - our wine glasses sat empty and no one seemed to notice let alone bother to ask if we wanted refills?? My suggestion is to go somewhere else. Not worth it. I'm sure the servers tried their best but they need training and it shouldn't be 'on the job' in a restaurant of this Caliber Manager could be given a course in food and beverage skills too. read more

We had a wonderful dinner here after a day in Cambridge. This small place, overlooking Kings College, had a nice aged atmosphere. We stared with the soup of the day, which was a carrot and cumin soup that was delicious. Next was a Coley fish on top of fingerling potatoes. Solid place to satiate your steak cravings. We went for lunch, and I ordered the two course set menu. I really enjoyed my stated of haggis fritters with beet root and goat cheese salad on the side. My main, the minute steak, was good, though I didn't think it was a stand out. I wished their steak has a bit more personality. Service was generally good. Ambience was cozy and good for intimate meals. The low ceiling underground floor was a different experience, and I enjoyed it. Felt a bit like having steak in a cave. Great menu, decent service, excellent beer. I have tried both locations in Cambridge. Both are different, but both are very good. Good variety of meats, some very unique. All fairly flavorful for British food :) This is my go to restaurant when I'm in Cambridge. I have never been disappointed and many times have been pleasantly surprised. There's a great bar just around the corner from the central location (don't remember the name, but you can't miss it due to the crowd). Drop in for a post meal pint or two. read more

My first visit here since it transformed from tea rooms to chop house and it was a pleasant one. I wasn't knocked out by the food, decor, service or drinks menu, but neither did they disappoint. I went for the sausage and mash (with the chance to select your banger, mash and sauce - I opted for pork, bacon and cranberry, a cheese and chive mash and a mushroom sauce) which was tasty and not too heavy. Followed by a very respectable sticky toffee pudding and all washed down with some Samuel Smiths lager. It enjoys a great location and seems to be thriving, but if pushed, at this price bracket I would probably still opt for D'Arrys or Browns and my instinct is that you can get food of the same quality and a little bit cheaper at pubs like the Free Press. read more

We visited Cambridge to do some shopping and decided a leisurely lunch was in order to start the day off. We've walked down Kings Parade many times and I have never seen this place before. It caught our eye and we stepped in for a table. Apart from the waiter who greeted us who seemed to want only those who had booked to enter, we were treated to good service. The Chop House was busy but not packed. The menu is varied and obviously created for meat lovers with dishes such as chops (duh!), roast dinners and suet puddings. We had three courses and everything we ate was lovely. I had Carrot and Coriander Soup followed by Half a Roast Chicken with traditional Roast (I couldn't eat any more). My other half had Ham Hock, Lamb Suet Pudding with Horseradish Mash and Sticky Toffee Pudding. First off I have to say that the food is brilliant - it is so well cooked, wonderfully presented and you can tell only the best ingredients are used as every course is packed with flavour. Secondly portions are rather large. Probably not a problem for the table of American Academics across from us but we struggled. The portions are generous but not grotesque. Depending on where you sit you could be at ground level or in the basement in the old kitchens or the cellar. We were seated at the back in the old cellar and it was very cool and intimate - especially on such a particularly hot and busy day in Cambridge. The service was excellent - nothing was too much trouble for our waitress. She was polite and very helpful throughout - something that earned her a good tip. If you find yourself hungry in central Cambridge I can highly recommend the Cambridge Chop House... now we need to check out the other restaurants that are part of the "Cambridge Food Company". read more

Probably one of the best english restaurant I tried. Service is friendly and smart as well, presentation of meals is well done. I took beef cheek which must be one of the speciality of this restaurant. As a french I would have note cooked them as they did, but I must recognize the test was good, I just regret meat was a bit to dry. Desert (fruit crumble) was absoloutly great, served warm with its custard. This is one of the best, if not the best, restaurants I have been to in Cambridge. I have eaten here twice in the span of three years and I was impressed both times. Their meats are excellent quality, their house brewed beers are great, service is professional and elegant, and the place has a very charming rustic atmosphere (especially in the basement). During my first visit I believe I ordered the pork tenderloin with a mushroom sauce (they ask for your sauce preference upon ordering) and one of their beers. It was amazing. During my second visit I ordered the venison steak and an ale. Again it was great. While pricey I find that it is one of the few places in Cambridge that's worth the price. I followed other reviewers' advice and simply asked my server what she recommended. While I did not order her first choice (a steak that would have set me back nearly 30 pounds), I did get her second suggestion, the lamb chops. Amazing. Not only have I never had lamb as perfectly prepared, but the ambiance on a summer night is fantastic. If you go, consider asking to be seated outside. These tables are rarely occupied, and they give you a lovely view of King's College with students getting ready for that night's festivities. read more

We visited on Sunday for Father's Day and the food was incredible. As a group of 5 we all decided to have the special Sunday roasts: pork, beef or chicken. All of the meals looked and tasted incredible and came with a beautiful red wine gravy which complemented the nicely cooked meats. We were seated downstairs and as we arrived early it was quiet at first but soon began to fill up to a nice atmosphere. The service was fantastic and the price was very reasonable for the amount of good food we had. The desserts were also incredible with the chocolate pot being a personal favourite! I would thoroughly recommend as it was the best meal I have had in Cambridge and will no doubt be eating here again in future! read more
