Giving 5 stars as most of the reviews are way old and I think the place needs a boost. Yes, it's pricy, but so is everything else in England. All of Europe really. However, the food and service here are excellent. I have been coming to Cambridge off and on for a few months and I always make several stops here to eat. Simple menu with simple dishes make it easy to select whatever it is you're in the mood for. If you area trying to eat healthy, this is the place for you. As previous reviews suggest, this place can be a tourist trap and I can understand why: it's located just steps away from King's College with a view of the Chapel across the street. Surely there is some historical significance to the establishment as well. In the summer or on an event day, the Copper Kettle is sure to be filled to the brim with patrons. I was lucky to come for a light bite and sip and have a window seat on a quiet morning. Tea and a fruit Greek yoghurt are all I had, which was fine albeit slightly pricey for the dish compared to other places. At the moment I can give no more than 3 stars, but the lunch and dinner menus feature Mediterranean and Turkish fare, which may draw me in again given another opportunity to dine in. Also, if you must use the loo and wander into the back area, there are interesting antique kettles on display in addition to the chance to people watch outside. read more

Limp service, limp club sandwich and more atmosphere in a morgue. Staff are just getting through the day and earning a wage, you'll be lucky if they actually make eye contact with you! Nice decor and great location but why oh why did we stand like fools in the place for 10 mins waiting for a table when the food and service was such a let down. I enjoyed their English breakfast. I practically had the place to myself on a Sunday morning.

My husband and I came into Cambridge quite late after a very long flight and harrowing day driving through the streets of London. After we checked into our hotel, we took a stroll to find something to eat. Terry noticed the menu had fish and chips so we took a turn into this little cafe. I was happy with my red lentil soup and small salad containing lots of lovely feta cheese and olives. Terry enjoyed his fish and chips. Very cute little place. We decided to return for breakfast the next morning. Terry had the brunch which contained an egg, sausage, bacon, toast and baked beans. I had a cheese and pickle panini. This is where I discovered pickles in America and pickles in England are different. Still a good sandwich. Ah but the lattes, heavenly. read more

The Copper Kettle used to be owned by different owners. Back in the day, the food was perfectly home baked, the staff very friendly, and the layout cosy and homely. Since it switched hands, I am not as much of a fan as I once was. It has lost its 'family' feel, and is now much the same as any other 'nice' café. The food is still pretty good, but a lot pricier and less good value than it once was. The layout is much less welcoming as well. The cakes, however, are still delicious. And it does make a nice change to all the mock-Italian coffee shops which have sprung up all around town. This is a great place to take parents or grandparents, but it is a little pricy, and has gone down hill over the past few years. However, it is still pretty good. read more

Conveniently located to visit the town with a great view over King's Parade and the college garden. I had a cheese cake with cherries but also the traditional apple pie is good. Nice English breakfast even if a bit industrial. read more

I had the Full English Breakfast (5 pounds) as well. It had one fried egg, half of a small tomato, two sausages, bacon, beans, and four pieces of toast with butter/marmalade. I would recommend it if you want something filling at a decent price. My friend had a yogurt parfait which was also fairly large and had a colorful assortment of fruits, but she claimed the yogurt was more sour than what you'd expect in the US. They also have a small dessert selection of cakes, brownies, and pies--we tried a slice of their chocolate cake. It looked heavy, but it wasn't. My friend liked it so much that she wanted a whole one for her future birthday party. Also, their blackcurrant cheesecake is worth a try! The service was alright; they won't check up on you regularly, but they will notice you if you wave at them. read more

The Copper Kettle is unique in that it is the only place in Cambridge in which you can have breakfast and/or Greek food at the same time (unless you count staggering past Gardie's on your way home from Cindies as breakfast). Unfortunately, I wouldn't necesarily call this a good thing. I have been trapped into going here more times than necessary, as it has the honour of being one of few places to get breakfast in Cambridge and has a prime location on King's Parade from which to watch the walks of shame and comment on the tourist. The food, however, is always disappointing. The choice is extremely limited, especially to someone who isn't particularly fond of greasy food. The only type of eggs on offer are fried, unless, as I unwittingly did, you go for the La Turca Platter, in which case you are subjected to cold boiled eggs. These, along with grated cheese, olives, and various other strange items which make up the Platter, are an experience wouldn't like to repeat. Ditto for the "Yoghurt Parfait," which features "muesli" that I fear someone has mistakenly been taken out of a sawdust bag. Oh well, at least the tea's ok. read more

Cosy place during cold long winter evenings, when you rushing from work and just want to stop for a moment before going home, grab cup of coffee and relax...Look around at old photos and kettles, which gives place a special touch. Only one thing I was not too sure - it appeared to me that during the day you can order sandwich, beans on toast, ecc, where in the evening it looks like restaurant rather than a coffee place and menu appeared to be Turkish...Well, I have to admit, I go there for coffee only, so can't comment much on food, it is only my impression.. read more

Full English Breakfast for 5 pounds! I recommend the Veggie English Breakfast, as the sausages in the Full taste kind of like sawdust to me. The coffee is a bit wanting in terms of flavour and they don't always get the eggs right but all in all, you can't really beat the price or location. (It's right across from King's/St. Cat's.) BEWARE though, if you're like me and prefer extra tomatoes or mushrooms with your Veggie Breakfast rather than chips be advised that they only do substitutions on weekdays. read more

Having spent the day being a tourist fancied an early evening meal before heading home. Realised that all the places near the colleges were likely to be touristy, but this place looked reasonable. It isn't expensive but you do get what you paid for, I had the roast beef, the veg seemed to be from tins and had been overlooked and re-heated. Service was ok, we had tea but had to ask for new cups as the cups were dirty. The pastries on display looked tired and stale so didn't try them. Can't say I can recommend this place. read more

Definitely a tourist trap. I just can't imagine locals frequenting this place. The coffee is weak and warm, and the cheesecake we ordered was really horrible: the cheapest, nastiest E-number laden frozen rubbish you can buy, tarted up with a bit of squirty aerosol cream. My fresh fruit and egg were good, but the coffee was bitter (I ordered decaf. My partner ordered caffeinated and his coffee tasted great). Beautiful views, but inside, it was chilly and with no music, the atmosphere felt uncomfortable. There were two people there. A woman and a young man. The young man served us and in general seemed disinterested in helping us. The woman seemed nicer. I just can't see going back. This place is a tourist trap because it's right across from King's, so if you can tolerate the busy foot traffic I'd definitely go to the Copper Kettle for a full english (£5). I wouldn't go for lunch though--their chips are a bit dry and the pasta I had was pretty cold and had to be sent back. read more

The copper kettle is one of those cafes, cum bars, which is hard to define. It couldn't possibly have more on the menu and they probably couldn't get another table in but you never feel overlooked or uncomfortable. The fare is affordable and in a great spot for people watching. read more

Yes, it's a tourist hangout, and it's usually packed, but it does give you beautiful views of King's. Sitting outside on a bright day is gorgeous; the food may not be outstanding, but it is quite good value and there is plenty of choice. Plus, you get to eat in a place that features in numerous Cambridge memoirs, from Sylvia Plath's journals to Clive James's best-selling autobiographies. A solid Cambridge tradition in an unbeatable location. read more
