    Cambridge Junction

Located just beside the restaurants and cinema at the leisure centre, it is the most visited place…read morein the leisure centre because of the various events that take place. The junction consists of clubs, theatre, rooms for dance, gigs, comedy and live music amongst other activities. Different nights of the club offer different music theme such as indie, rock, electro, drum, disco, funk and many more. The ticket prices vary depending on the events; some events are for 16+ and some strictly 18 and over. Talking about tickets, they can be quite expensive, starting from £7 and some events cost as much as £20 per ticket. The comedy nights are remarkable, tickets start from £10 and you can save some money by buying your ticket in advance. The variety of events that is hosted in this place means there is never a boring moment and you can have a time of your life.

The Junction hosts easily a thousand events each year so it's obvious to note there is something for everyone. In recent years other leisure areas have developed in the same location on Clifton Road, meaninga day out in Cambridge can be had in this cosy space alone, no need to head into the busy City Centre. The club nights definitely have to be the best aspect of The Junction, from classic disco's to Dot Cotton - the monthly gay night, they normally run well into the early hours and offer a wide range of entertainment and drinks. A definitive place to start, spend and end your evening.

I love the Geldart and I visited several times on my last trip to Cambridge. If you are searching…read morefor the perfect spot to try exotic meat on a hot rock, search no more, the Geldart delivers. They generally have kangaroo and crocodile in stock, but the also have a revolving selection of other meats that includes springbok, blesbok, wildebeast, etc. They also have a great selection of ales on tap and a huge wine list. They also have outdoor seating for when the weather is nice. This is one of the best pubs that I visited for food and I will be returning on my next trip to the UK.

The live music varies from okay to super. The wi-fi is free, and they sell cookies from a jar. Winner. The "hot rocks" are great fun, and have facilitated my posting onto Facebook such updates as "mat is now eating reindeer, poor rudolph", "mat had not heard of blesbok before, but is now apparently eating it", "mat is eating springbok, previously thought this was a type of running shoe", "mat cannot believe he is eating zebra, is this even legal?" etc. The fish and chips? Could this possibly be the very best melt-in-the-mouth battered fish in the whole of Cambridge? (Okay, probably not - but it's definitely up there with the best, and comes highly recommended!) The ambience and decor in the bar area is lovely: a toasty fire in winter, gorgeous sunlight in summer. It looks like something out of the 1920s. The music policy is gentle and centres around latin, big band, and vocal jazz. Service is consistently brilliant. The main dining area can get unpleasantly noisy in the evenings, and seems to attract the loudest groups of people ever. That's the problem with great places: they are so good they attract big groups of people. I am very lucky to have this wonderful pub in spitting distance from my partner's diggs in Cambridge and I'm always excited to go there for a quick wee dram at the end of an evening or a summer's lunch or a dinner out. Elvis, the manager, is hospitable, and one gets the impression he hasn't slept nor taken any time off work for the last 5 years. He's there constantly and it shows from the fact the service and food standards are consistently high. A true gem.

The good thing about this place is they don't charge you for cover (well at least when I went) and dress codes aren't strict (I guess cuz they assume everyone in Europe has a good sense of style). Last I was here my friends and I got there early enough to get a booth and ordered ourselves drinks before we hit the dancefloor. But while there, I accidentally bumped into some lady smoking where then she told me to "WOTCH IT!" Also, there seemed to be more guys and girls. You know what that means (I'll let that simmer for a bit). I also couldn't really enjoy their music, not because I didn't like it but moreso because I couldn't get used to it. But everyone around me seemed to enjoy it, what with it being stuff from the U.S. and other countries. The crowd there was very diverse too, especially both young and old. Mostly old. Overall, if I was back in the area I would comeback just to party here one more time. I know there aren't that many clubs/ night spots in Cambridge but the Fez is a good club to check out if you're in the area.

For the taller person this place is a little cramped but I'm used to that now but it can be a hit hairy after afew and you forget to duck. Also the coat check is a joke, there is no real queue and it's basically just a free for all to get your coat in or out ad this means it drops a star as a good coat check is the mark of a good club. All in all it's not a bad night out, especially seeing as cambridge has little else to it's name.

    Tabanco - Restaurant front

Way back when in 17th century Jerez, 'tabancos' were taverns used by communities for socializing while enjoying local wines and foods. Tabanco brings this taste of Andalucian culture to Cambridge, showcasing traditional flavors with modern twists. Located in the city center, Tabanco is ideally situated for residents, tourists, and students alike. Its main focus is 'tapas y vino'; with endless applause I deeply appreciate places that can pull off simplicity so well and elevate it to such great heights of excellence. The restaurant space is well thought-out. Upon entering you are greeted at the bar, and then seated either on the long table centered in the middle of the room or at one of the smaller tables lining the walls. The color scheme embraces warm reds/oranges, and Edison-esque lighting and mouth watering Ibérico ham hang along the edges of the ceiling. The light Spanish music drifting in the background then sets for a relaxing atmosphere. With all these elements combined it is easy to forget that you never left England. If you've never had tapas before, they're basically appetizer-sized dishes. As someone who wants to try everything on a menu, agonizes over what to order, and then gets food envy-- tapas are a godsend solution. Since they're smaller than mains, you're encouraged to order several plates. It's like creating your own taster menu for Spanish cuisine; just choose whatever most interests you and you're good to go! Even better yet, grab a group of friends and practically order the whole menu to try out together! I am happy to report that I have done so and honestly, you cannot go wrong with anything on Tabanco's menu. If you're looking for a more traditional/introductory tapas, I would recommend the 'tortilla' (Spanish omelette), 'patatas bravas' (deep fried potatoes), and 'croquetas de jamón' (ham croquettes). The tortilla held its shape beautifully without being too dry and had a burst of flavor from the caramelized onions inside. And unlike normal chips/fries that need to be immediately devoured before they go soggy, somehow the patatas bravas magically remained crisp from start to finish. The croquetas de jamón had a lovely breaded crust that contrasted nicely with the creamy bechamel and ham filling without feeling too greasy. For meat lovers, the 'chorizo a la plancha con boniato' (grilled chorizo with sweet potato), 'pechuga de pato ahumado' (smoked duck breast on cranberry butter toast), 'filete de ternera' (flat iron steak), and the 'presa Ibérica' (grilled acorn-fed Iberico pork loin with romesco) are all amazing. The sweet potato balanced out the chorizo spices, and the duck with cranberries tasted like a Christmas roast. Both the flat iron steak and pork loin were skillfully finished with the doneness perfectly executed, no steak knife required here! And last, but not the least-- the romesco sauce was surprisingly divine. As a nut and red pepper-based sauce it added so much depth to the pork without overpowering it. I want to just put it on everything now and can't believe I've gone through my life without ever having it before. In terms of seafood, I suggest the 'gambas tempura' (tempura prawns). Having grown up on a tropical island where fresh seafood is a staple of everyday life, I'm normally disappointed with the selection I've seen in the UK. However, Tabanco's gambas tempura are massive in size with the prawns keeping their tenderness even after being deep fried. The saffron aioli was also a nice accompaniment, bringing in reminiscent flavors of paella without all the heavy stodge. Service-wise, the staff were all very welcoming and worked so efficiently. I used to work as a busser and know first hand how chaotic restaurants can get. However, even at peak times the Tabanco staff never skipped a beat. I think it all comes back to their ingenious restaurant layout-- orders are picked up from the kitchen and staff move in a circular path around the center table back to the kitchen. Along the way they can take/drop off orders and tend to any queries when they loop back around again. Phew! And if the above was not enough to convince you yet, Tabanco also has an impressive selection of imported Spanish sherries and wines. Feel free to ask the lovely staff for recommendations. Already looking forward to my next visit. Salud!
