The live music varies from okay to super. The wi-fi is free, and they sell cookies from a jar. Winner. The "hot rocks" are great fun, and have facilitated my posting onto Facebook such updates as "mat is now eating reindeer, poor rudolph", "mat had not heard of blesbok before, but is now apparently eating it", "mat is eating springbok, previously thought this was a type of running shoe", "mat cannot believe he is eating zebra, is this even legal?" etc. The fish and chips? Could this possibly be the very best melt-in-the-mouth battered fish in the whole of Cambridge? (Okay, probably not - but it's definitely up there with the best, and comes highly recommended!) The ambience and decor in the bar area is lovely: a toasty fire in winter, gorgeous sunlight in summer. It looks like something out of the 1920s. The music policy is gentle and centres around latin, big band, and vocal jazz. Service is consistently brilliant. The main dining area can get unpleasantly noisy in the evenings, and seems to attract the loudest groups of people ever. That's the problem with great places: they are so good they attract big groups of people. I am very lucky to have this wonderful pub in spitting distance from my partner's diggs in Cambridge and I'm always excited to go there for a quick wee dram at the end of an evening or a summer's lunch or a dinner out. Elvis, the manager, is hospitable, and one gets the impression he hasn't slept nor taken any time off work for the last 5 years. He's there constantly and it shows from the fact the service and food standards are consistently high. A true gem.

It's got strange live music, a pool table, a beer garden, free newspapers, a small but decent selection of beers, seating on the street, bar billiards (sometimes) and... thousands of pigs. That's right - this dark but warm little pub is brimful of random pig toys, pig posters and pig sculptures. It adds a unique atmosphere to an already well-known atmospheric pub. Being only about 20 houses away, you can trust me that this is a true local gem. After 5 on most nights you'll find this place packed with drinkers who can't be bothered to go home just yet or catch the train home to the villages. Even if it's near-freezing out you'll still see us taking our beers out and sitting on the grass by the BBC next door so that the smokers can smoke away. And on a hot summer night - it's just perfect. No need to go home until I get thrown out.

The more structured nights comprise of Punk Rock to Jazz whereas Open Mic night on the last Tuesday of every month offers aspiring musicians/poets a chance to get up on stage. Music isn't all The Moon has to offer, with a wide screen TV up front and a pool table there's a place to relax in a quieter atmosphere if the music's not to your taste. The music gives you a wide range of choice some nights the small dancing place will be packed with customers dancing the night away to the big bass sounds and other nights jazz is on the menu allowing everyone to tap away at their table to the dulcit tones. I've only been to one show here, so I…read moredon't have a great deal of experience, but here are my impressions of the venue so far, in bullet format for some unknown reason: Positives: -- Great location, not that they have control over it, but right in the center of Cambridge, and well positioned for a full night out, if desired. -- It's nice and open, doesn't feel cramped but also retains a level of intimacy with the artist. Nicely done. -- I'm a big guy but found the seats in the balcony to be quite comfortable. Plenty of legroom and cushion, though perhaps night quite elevated enough from the row in front. Negatives: -- They ran out of some varieties of beer, and still water, before the show even started! That's terribly mismanaged -- The hugely bright lights that flash at the audience at impact points during a performer's music shine directly into the eyes of the people sitting in the balcony. They detract from the experience, rather than enhancing it. I don't need to be told when to be moved by the music, I can decide for myself. -- Avoid the back rows of the balcony -- I can't imagine you can see much from there. We were in the third row of the balcony (row CC), though, and thought the seats had quite a nice view, but the view of the upper part of the stage was slightly obstructed by the lighting rig. -- There's only one entrance door, so there was a queue around the corner to get in. So there it is. Overall a decent venue -- I enjoyed it more than the O2 -- but some mismanagement of both the concessions and the main performance knock it down a bit. Still, we will return because they pull in some great acts!
