Unlike many pubs today, which thrive to survive using the the restaurant side, this pub has two bars as well as the restaurant. So, if you want just a pint then there is plenty of seating room. Wood beamed ceiling and inglenook fireplace, nice for those colder nights in winter. We were there to celebrate a 30th birthday and on arriving, early, we were welcomed by the bar staff with warm cheery smiles (a pleasant surprise these days). A table for the eight of us was already laid and we decorated it a little. Then down to a few drinks while awaiting the other guests. Nice selection of real ales and, I noticed, a fantastic selection of worldwide whiskies (although my favourite, Laphroaig, was absent). Once seated we perused the fantastic menu. I guarantee that there would be something on it that anyone would choose, even veggies. My problem was that there was so much choice and I wanted to try everything. I started with Cromer crab and avocado with lime dressing. Aberdeen Angus rump steak with a homemade peppercorn dressing (none of the usual bottled sauce), Portabello mushroom and really CHUNKY chips Wow delicious, both courses. Finally, cheese and biscuits. Three unusual local cheeses, with loads of crackers, celery, apple wedges, butter and a pot of home made chutney. A meal in itself. Going on the sounds from our friends and the empty plates around the table I can only assume that the other meals were as delicious as mine. Nice touch for a pub. This is definitely not touristy Cambridge, which in one way is a pity, because it's much a nicer pub than many that tourists visit in the centre. The interior is very traditional - lots of dark wood - with a single long room. On a freezing winter's night, it was cosily warm, and the staff were very welcoming and helpful. Clientele seemed a very mixed bunch of locals and students and some (very polite and chatty) heavy-metal fans. A nice touch was the lack of piped music. The main draw is the choice of up to 10 real ales, with some really interesting choices, include a locally-produced ale if you want to keep your food miles down. Food is more limited, with the usual snacks, plus a platter (£5) of either mixed gourmet Swiss and Dutch cheeses, or cheese and sausages, both served with horseradish and pickles, but (oddly) not bread. The roat beef was rare, tender and tasty. Vegatables cam in two large dishes: one with roast potatoes and one with a selection of vegetables. The veg had the right amount of crunch, but perhaps were slightly bland. Service was prompt and friendly and the dining room was full. Park by the river in Chesterton, walk along the Cam to Fen Ditton, lucn at the Acient Shepherds and return. It's just over a mile each way and makes a pleasant couple of hours or so.

Being the bourgeois man that I am, "The Regal" sounded to me like a nice place to stop with my friend for a pint, without having to constantly deflect jealous stares from the proletariat under-class which infect most every place I go. The only real downside to this pub is that they seem to allow inferior people in, and this is a problem for everyone, once they become bothersome. An example of such happened to me and two of my cohorts last week: We were enjoying a meal and a pint of ale each, when I looked up to notice an old Jimmy Saville-esque man giving us all an evil, unblinking glare. When he hadn't stopped after two minutes, I lifted the tankard to my mouth, and drank slowly, returning a stare so venomous that Richard Ramirez himself would have cowered with fear. However, after approximately 10 minutes of this exchange, he was still looking back at us, and clearly hadn't submitted to our superior dominance. I had but one last resort. I stood up from my seat and approached the cur slowly, never breaking eye contact. He swiftly put on his jacket and exited the establishment through the back door. I had their crispy pig face, mini arincini, 60-day aged sirloin (which they age themselves), triple fried chips, and rocket salad. Also their rosemary focaccia bread was phenomenal. It was like crack in bread form. I also had a great beer on cask as well as a glass of their Nero D'Avola from Sicily which went perfectly with my steak. Speaking of the steak, it was perfectly cooked medium rare and had a very crisp and flavorful exterior. My friends said their doughnuts are to die for here, but unfortunately we didn't leave enough room after the wonderful feast we had. Next time! The atmosphere is pub/cottagey with loads of character.
