I came here with friends after my London adventure. What a charming, quiet ambience compared to the city! I know what you're thinking - this is a pub! But it's a small, cozy 18th century pub "buried in the heart of the Essex countryside". Service is pleasant, attentive and efficient. There is a wide variety of ales and ciders and an extensive menu (some items change on a daily basis; all menus are written neatly on a blackboard). They offer fresh fish dishes from the Billingsgate market as well as vegetarian meals.
I chose to try their slow roast lamb shoulder in red wine and rosemary gravy (served with mashed potatoes and vegetables). The lamb was tender, juicy and falling off the bone - the gravy was just amazing; it brought out the flavour of the meat rather than overpower it. It was a huge serving and well worth £11.00. My passionfruit cider was very refreshing and not too sweet.
This evening definitely made up for my disappointing experience at the Three Tuns in London. read more
