I hang here whenever I'm in Cambridge - it's the only real Craft joint in the town - but I can never get a handle on it. So I went to their 'Craft festival' a few weeks back and, um, um? There, was, ummmmmm nothing. I did have a draught carrot Saison - a first even for Craft Jesus! - which was seriously nasty in a bad/good way. Still, if you remember it, somethings going on, right? They have some weird taps and the occasional DIPA, still a rare Craft horse in the UK. It just doesn't come together for me. I could easily spend a few hours in The Cambridge Brewhouse. In fact, I think we did! It's good to see somewhere balance between pub and bar, and Cambridge is lucky to have somewhere like the Brew House as opposed to the usual chain suspects. The interior is very light and there's plenty of seating, with a 'restaurant' section towards the back and more upstairs. We headed straight to the bar when we arrived and looked over the different options. As usual, there were cask and keg available, which you can choose either from looking at the different labels (so sue me, I often choose my drinks based on the design!) or at the large blackboard. They also have some cans and bottles in the fridges, plus wines and spirits are also available. I tried some of the Cambridge Brewhouse's own pale ale - when in Rome and all that - and stuck with it for a couple of pints. It was nice and light, and a great session beer. Service was friendly and reminded me very much of drinking in Manchester; they're more than willing to let you taste a few of the beers and talk you through their favourites on that day. Fun college bar with good beers, solid good & and a great vibe. Beautiful massive sliding windows that open fully to create an effectively patio bar section on a nice day. Service was a bit cold to what they correctly assumed as a American tourist, but hey - I get it. This is a spot geared for locals, but I'll def still stop in next time I pass through. fun brewpub to hang out in and go for an English - that's what you do, innit, you get tanked and go for an English? well, after a day of hiking around Cambridge, the time was right to go for an English, and I ended up at the Brew House after meandering down the various side streets. a hefty meat pie a flaky dough filled with tender chicken, roasted carrots, a side of chips, a hearty helping of gravy and a few cold brews. great service and hearty portions for the price. extra kudos for having a platter named after Douglas Adams. read more

It really smells in here. I'm told it's because of the brewing. I get that, although I've been to working breweries that don't smell as bad as it did here. Upstairs the smell didn't bother me as much, but proceed with caution if you think this might bother you. We walked in and a member of staff told us he'd come grab us when a table was ready. He did, we parked ourselves, and then he came to ask if we were eating. We weren't so he then told us we had to move. Not great customer service to be honest - he should have ran us through the eating or just drinking spiel to begin with. But anyway. We got our drinks and off we went upstairs where there is communal seating and lots of it. Beer was good, atmosphere was good, decor is cool. I really liked it here. One (pretty gross) thing: the ladies toilets were grim. I won't go into details but they were really unpleasant. I get that shit happens (pun intended!) but really, sort it out. read more

Overall, it felt very much like microbreweries in America, which normally would be my and my husband's scene. However, we'd been visiting so many pubs in the area with history, that have cask-conditioned ales that we can't get in the States as well as more cozy atmosphere, so it felt a bit less exciting in that we could experience something like this back home in Michigan, Chicago and Charlottesville, VA. (We have lived in each of these places and my husband is a homebrewer.) So I'm wavering between a three- and four-star review. The beer: It was a busy, packed house on a Thursday night but we fortunately were able to snag four spots (my husband, my friend's sister and her boyfriend) at a communal table right next to where they brew on premises. As usual, my husband and I were happy to see that could do a flight of the beers they could make and others they have on draft! There aren't many, as they haven't been around a while, but it was good to see a porter as that kind of craft brew isn't as available on tap in the area. The food: I got the veggie board AKA "The Duchess" and my husband got the meat board AKA "The Smokehouse." I absolutely LOVED the squash and sweet potato falafel that felt like fritters - so crispy and surprisingly light yet creamy inside. The hummus with celery felt extremely normal though. I tried bits and pieces of my husband's platter, and I'd say the smoked/dried meats were much more flavorful than the bland chicken. read more

Came here for a friend's going away party a few weekends ago. I was pleasantly surprised by how good their in-house brews were. They had a honey ale and a wheat beer, both house brews, that were really nice and reasonably priced. Perfect place to get drunk in the afternoon, and very pleasant and helpful bartenders. Only tried a few of the appetizers, but the chicken was really tasty. If I lived in Cambridge I'd probably be a regular here! read more

I had cycled by this a ton of times before finally going in. I really liked it! The space is large - especially since they have a upstairs. The menu has some typical pub fare, but then goes beyond that - especially with their platters. I came here with a large group of about 12 people and they were able to accommodate us with no problems (we did have a reservation, though). I split some of the platters with other people as a dinner - great sausage and other meats! Would definitely recommend as a meal. I got some of their house beer, and it was super delicious! It made me wish I didn't have to go home to my dissertation because I would have loved to sit there and drink more (and more) of it. The Brew House definitely isn't a pub atmosphere, so don't go in expecting that. It can also get pretty crowded at night, with people spilling out into the streets. read more

Came here on an early Sunday evening with my partner. Was immediately pleased with the chill, youthful atmosphere and the music playing (Stone Roses, Blur, Unkle, etc). Service was friendly and prompt. Was very happy to see that vegan options were clearly marked (even the wine). Had the soup of the day (some sort of garlic soup?) and the sweet potato 'falafels' with harissa. Both were tasty, although I'd suggest tweaking the texture of the falafels slightly to make it less rubbery. But it was all yummy. Enjoyed my cider. Beer samplers also available. And there was a pot of fresh basil on the table. I'd definitely return if I were in the area. read more

This is a really nice place and a different experience to your regular English pub! The selection of beers will ensure that you will never have to get the same one twice. The atmosphere is relaxed and it takes a lot to make the big room seem full. The food is great and if you can easily load up on a week's worth of meat if you are so inclined. First time I've been back since 2015. I used to come here regularly when I lived here and I figured I'd stop by when I came through on business because the food used to be good. That has completely changed. The food was completely unappetizing and I was ready to leave after the first bite because I was so disappointed. The burgers were so dry and hard my wife couldn't cleanly cut through it, the chicken wings appeared to be boiled and lacked any spices or flavor, and the bbq brisket wasn't a brisket, it was nothing more than a dry roast with bbq sauce. And on top of that, we had to seek out the service staff for items because they were busy servicing a table of 20 and had to still pay the 10% service charge for being a group of 6. Wouldn't mind paying it had the time been put into us for being a larger party, but that effort didn't occur. One of the most dissatisfying and disappointing £40 meals in my life. Save yourself the pain and do not go here for food. I don't plan to again. read more

Nothing special on a weekday . Waitress pounced on us before we had taken coats off to order drinks. My wife's veggie burger tasted it was cooked alongside meat products ( she is not fussy but not stupid either) ! Asked if it was cooked this way and we received no response . Paid & left . Great place. Their own beer is really tasty, but they also have an amazing selection on tap/in bottles--if you are a beer person this is one of the best in Cambridge. Also worth pointing out that their customer service is pretty stellar, and that it's much more vegetarian/vegan-friendly than their menu initially suggests. I went here a couple of months ago with friends and, since I'm a dreaded vegan, called ahead to ask about food; the woman I spoke to talked to the chef and called me back with a list of their dishes that they could veganise for me. I was also here this week for a work celebration in their upstairs room, and the buffet turned out to be entirely meat and things that were fried in the same oil as meat, leaving me and another vegetarian out in the cold. Even though we said we were fine (both of us were happy to have a meal of great beer and crisps--hey, it happens), the staff fixed us each a salad with a really tasty cooked beetroot/pepper/tomato topping. We found the Cambridge Brew house to be very charming. We spent about 20 minutes in the bar area while waiting for our table on a busy Wednesday evening. My husband was thrilled with all the beer choices. We were able to watch what was coming out of the kitchen so we knew exactly what to order when we were seated. We had the BBQ chicken wings as a starter which were very tasty but it only came with 2 1/2 wings on the plate. I expected there to be at least 5 wings. My husband ordered fish and chips which was very good except that I peeled the skin off of the piece that I tried. I ordered a cheese burger and it was delicious. Pie and ginger cider (from one of the long pumps) are excellent. Warning for us americans - the ginger cider is not ice cold and is flat.This is one of the best pie i've ever had. I had thr beef stew pie. I did not enjoy the other beer offerings that much, particularly the house brews. read more

Good service, good food. If looking for a light lunch 1-2 tapas certainly suffices, but plenty of bigger options for the truly hungry. It does get busy and booking a reservation in advance is a good idea if going at prime lunch and dinner times. After cycling past this place probably about a thousand times, my girlfriend and I finally decided to check it out one night. Hailing from Christ's, we love to go to D'Arry's across the way but had never gotten around to this. We both ordered the very popular sticky beef and we're not disappointed! The sauce could've have come straight out of the US it was so authentic. The only reason I feel inclined to give it four stars is because the home-made beers were a little bit of a let down. I tried a sampler with three of the more common ones and did not find myself wanting any more of any of them. I stopped by Cambridge Brew House for dinner on a Thursday night while traveling through Cambridge alone. In my experience you don't always get the best service when dining alone but I'm happy to report that was not the case here. The service was awesome, I was checked on quite often by a very kind waiter, and the whole experience was pleasant. More importantly the food was excellent - they were out of the particular vegetarian dish I wanted but the waiter suggested the sweet potato and butternut squash burger as an alternative. I'm sure most vegetarians reading this review have had the experience of eating a veggie burger clearly made by someone who has never tasted a good one before, has no idea how to make the burger hold together, and doesn't realize that the recipe needs salt to not be bland AF so I was a bit apprehensive...I had nothing to fear as the burger was absolutely delicious. Chips were solid, house brew was delicious, and again my waiter took great care of me. I will certainly return next time I'm in town. read more
