I visited here around noon on a weekday. I sat outside, where it wasn't very busy. It did not take…read morevery long at all for a waiter to greet me and give me a menu. As soon as I looked at the menu, I knew I had made a mistake. This place seems to be solely for the purpose of drinking wine, not, as I expected, a good place to try new wines with different food pairings. Perhaps if there were more people in my party or if I had not been on a budget, this purpose would have been better accommodated. However, I accepted that I had sat down here and decided to give it a chance. The first thing, obviously, was to order a drink.Their selection of rose and cider was abysmal, no more than two options for either. At first, I thought, "Well, it is a WINE bar," but then I continued looking through the menu and their offerings of gin, whiskey, and other spirits was quite impressive. While it was possible to order reds and whites by the glass, there was only one 'by the glass' option for champagne, rose, and sparkling wines, and I was not in the mood to have to mull over the menu again if I did not like their selection. So, I ordered the cider. When the waiter brought it over, I noticed something on the inside of the glass, but when I looked up to tell him about it, he had already gone. I waited for him to come back, which took five minutes and I did not receive an apology, which I was not hung up about but it is still good customer service to do so. Once he returned and I tried the cider, I found it quite sour and not to my taste. The wines had descriptions so I felt one for the ciders and ales would have done very well. As for food, their offerings were mainly cheese and charcuterie dishes. I was looking for something more substantial, but it would have been rude not to order anything so I ordered the bread board, which is merely bread and olive oil. It was perfectly fine. The service was not anything to be impressed by. The waiter was not friendly at all. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very touristy, at least to me. Perhaps this is due to its location on the river, where students and companies are trying to get the tourists to go on a punting tours. Overall, unsatisfactory. Will not be going back.

This was the venue of choice for our extended Valentine's date. I ordered from the Valentine's set…read moremenu and opted for the seabass ceviche for a starter, and duck for a main. The seabass ceviche was really excellent. The fish tasted super fresh and was mixed with crunchy lettuce and creamy avocado which made a great contrast of textures. Even though others on the table had charcuterie and Camembert I didn't have food envy -though that's not to say I didn't snaffle bits of other people's. All delicious. The duck was beautifully cooked and very flavoursome. It came with some very tasty veg and spinach, and a veritable tower of potato. I didn't enjoy the potato tower as much as I could as it wasn't very creamy and had potato skins in it - not really my scene. Along with my meal I had a delicious bottle of red. I can't remember what it was but our waitress took the time to help us out with the wine list. The price was fairly reasonable and I was happy with the service - overall this is a great place and I'd recommend to Cambridge dwellers and visitors. One thing to note: the toilets are outside and then inside another building. Do not be alarmed if a staff member directs you to the toilet and all of a sudden you're in the street!

They had both a set menu and a standard menu to choose from. The set menu didn't particularly take my fancy so I avoided it, that was purely a personal choice though there was nothing wrong with it. For starters I shared a baked Camembert, which was served with toast, salad and an onion chutney. It was pretty good although more toast would have been appreciated. For the main course I had the fillet steak and came across one of the nicest steaks I've ever had. It took me by surprise to be honest i wasn't expecting it! The chips it came with were nothing special though. The only comment I would have is that I asked for it medium and it came way less than medium, wasn't complaining though I was very glad they did so! The whole meal came to £30-40 each including drinks which wasn't too bad at all considering we all had steak or fish. Overall I had a great time, the staff were friendly and efficient and if I could give it 4.5 I would. It falls shy of a 5 unfortunately though.

We sat inside and ordered the tobacco old fashioned and the corn & oil cocktails both of which were very tasty and worth their weight in alcohol. We also ordered some light snacks; bread, cheese, olives, olive oil and balsamic, pickles, and mustard which did the trick to help with drinking on an empty stomach although nothing super memorable but it did its job. Our server was attentive and we enjoyed the ambiance of the small but functional facilities on our first trip to Mill Rd; we're excited to return to try more!

(Best wishes for the previous owners...I did try their food and thought it well.) Well, I've been to this new bar at least three times now since it's opened a month ago, and I'm trying to utilize my willpower and not go to spend my money. Alas, the owner makes good drinks with fresh ingredients and bases and liqueurs that aren't stocked elsewhere. In addition to getting our cocktails (e.g. caipirinha, margarita anejo) with what seems to be quite top-shelf (or at least mid-shelf...is that a word?...) spirits for 6.75-7.75 pounds per drink, my bf and I have been addicted to the coffee-infused Patron shots, which aren't cheap but are really delicious. I really like the environment since it's quite chilled and non-rowdy. I can't stand yelling over others at bars and clubs that put too much crap syrup in their drinks. So anyway, good, laid-back but classy vibe here with fresh drinks. Not the cheapest but affordable for a weekly indulgence if you're a college student/yuppie. God this place is pandering to my alcoholic needs.

    Tabanco - Restaurant front

Whether you're looking for ways to spice up your staycation or are riding on the coattails of your…read moremost recent España holiday high-- Tabanco will not disappoint. Way back when in 17th century Jerez, 'tabancos' were taverns used by communities for socializing while enjoying local wines and foods. Tabanco brings this taste of Andalucian culture to Cambridge, showcasing traditional flavors with modern twists. Located in the city center, Tabanco is ideally situated for residents, tourists, and students alike. Its main focus is 'tapas y vino'; with endless applause I deeply appreciate places that can pull off simplicity so well and elevate it to such great heights of excellence. The restaurant space is well thought-out. Upon entering you are greeted at the bar, and then seated either on the long table centered in the middle of the room or at one of the smaller tables lining the walls. The color scheme embraces warm reds/oranges, and Edison-esque lighting and mouth watering Ibérico ham hang along the edges of the ceiling. The light Spanish music drifting in the background then sets for a relaxing atmosphere. With all these elements combined it is easy to forget that you never left England. If you've never had tapas before, they're basically appetizer-sized dishes. As someone who wants to try everything on a menu, agonizes over what to order, and then gets food envy-- tapas are a godsend solution. Since they're smaller than mains, you're encouraged to order several plates. It's like creating your own taster menu for Spanish cuisine; just choose whatever most interests you and you're good to go! Even better yet, grab a group of friends and practically order the whole menu to try out together! I am happy to report that I have done so and honestly, you cannot go wrong with anything on Tabanco's menu. If you're looking for a more traditional/introductory tapas, I would recommend the 'tortilla' (Spanish omelette), 'patatas bravas' (deep fried potatoes), and 'croquetas de jamón' (ham croquettes). The tortilla held its shape beautifully without being too dry and had a burst of flavor from the caramelized onions inside. And unlike normal chips/fries that need to be immediately devoured before they go soggy, somehow the patatas bravas magically remained crisp from start to finish. The croquetas de jamón had a lovely breaded crust that contrasted nicely with the creamy bechamel and ham filling without feeling too greasy. For meat lovers, the 'chorizo a la plancha con boniato' (grilled chorizo with sweet potato), 'pechuga de pato ahumado' (smoked duck breast on cranberry butter toast), 'filete de ternera' (flat iron steak), and the 'presa Ibérica' (grilled acorn-fed Iberico pork loin with romesco) are all amazing. The sweet potato balanced out the chorizo spices, and the duck with cranberries tasted like a Christmas roast. Both the flat iron steak and pork loin were skillfully finished with the doneness perfectly executed, no steak knife required here! And last, but not the least-- the romesco sauce was surprisingly divine. As a nut and red pepper-based sauce it added so much depth to the pork without overpowering it. I want to just put it on everything now and can't believe I've gone through my life without ever having it before. In terms of seafood, I suggest the 'gambas tempura' (tempura prawns). Having grown up on a tropical island where fresh seafood is a staple of everyday life, I'm normally disappointed with the selection I've seen in the UK. However, Tabanco's gambas tempura are massive in size with the prawns keeping their tenderness even after being deep fried. The saffron aioli was also a nice accompaniment, bringing in reminiscent flavors of paella without all the heavy stodge. Service-wise, the staff were all very welcoming and worked so efficiently. I used to work as a busser and know first hand how chaotic restaurants can get. However, even at peak times the Tabanco staff never skipped a beat. I think it all comes back to their ingenious restaurant layout-- orders are picked up from the kitchen and staff move in a circular path around the center table back to the kitchen. Along the way they can take/drop off orders and tend to any queries when they loop back around again. Phew! And if the above was not enough to convince you yet, Tabanco also has an impressive selection of imported Spanish sherries and wines. Feel free to ask the lovely staff for recommendations. Already looking forward to my next visit. Salud!
