Without question, the pair of progressive glasses from Costco are the absolute worst pair of glasses I've ever owned. Vertical lines tilt to the left or right as I move my head. Even without moving my head, squares and rectangles have one side shorter than the other. I had my eyes rechecked and the lenses remade, and the vision was still horrible. Utter garbage! read more

Super rude customer service. They don't listen to their customers and just want to sit and talk with each other. Worst optical facilities I have been to compared to all the other Costcos. The screw on the frame of my glasses can off and my lens popped out. I was told oh well what would you like for use to do. I asked them to fix it and they just tried to put a new screw in and not fix where it was bent. I got the glasses back and when I put them on the screw popped off again and the lens fell. I had the most unpleasant interaction with sona in the optical department. I came in about 10 minutes before closing time and I had my prescription and item codes but she stated she was "too busy". I'm sorry, but if you work on customer service and the business closes at 830...you are open until 830. Turning me away because of her own laziness..this is your job..every shift..until closing. I do admit, I always bought my glasses online at a Chinese (?) supplier. They were cool and cheap and I was never afraid of losing them. But since getting older and needing progressive lenses, I'm not super happy with the cheapest alternative anymore. But buying them at my optometrist was waaaay too pricey. So I decided to give Costco a try. The whole procedure was surprisingly easy. I brought the prescription from my Dr. Their frames were nice enough (even brands like Calvin Kline, Boss etc). Service was quick and friendly. In the end they were even able to add my insurance and I only paid about $100 for a nice frame and progressive lenses with all the bells and whistles. They were ready for pickup after a week. I'm super happy! read more

I came in on a Thursday night to shop at Costco and brought my prescriptions to shop prices around. I wear monthly contacts with different prescriptions for each eye. My optometrist's office quoted me $70 after using my benefits through VSP for a year's worth of contact lenses. Went in to Costco after hearing that they had a much better deal. I was able to order my contacts for free! The total was less than what my benefits covered and I was also provided a $20 mail in rebate. I ended up making money from it! The only annoying part is that the optometrist located within Costco isn't contracted with VSP so I have to continue getting my eyes checked elsewhere. The staff were very friendly and answered any questions I had. Probably helped that I went in fairly close to closing and there were no other customers. Just as an FYI, they close at the same time as the warehouse. Not sure about the actual optometrist office, but at least the optical store where you get glasses and contacts. The first time I came, a lovely lady assisted me and explained the coverage details for my insurance (think her name was Chona). Tried on a few frames but wasn't ready to make a decision yet. I came back a week later and Mike was extremely helpful too! Ladies, don't be afraid to try on glasses from the "Mens" section. Lol. I ended up getting a pair from the men's side. (2021 visit) She says "look at me". She's looking into my eyes what seems like for several minutes. At every direction she gives me, I try my best to follow what she says.. Then, she says frustratingly in a whiny voice.. "Why aren't you looking at me." "You keep looking over there?" I'm thinking in my head.. [damn girl you're hella fione but you're not even my girlfriend. I just met you.] ..Then, I remember, I'm in the eye doctors office. She says to herself quietly, it's probably the white light. [I'm thinking in my head.. look at her? I can't even see anything but this bright white light in my eyes] ..then I say to her, patiently and apologetically, "I'm trying, but yeah that bright light is messing me up" She was nice and professional at first and then all of a sudden.. It caught me off guard and the way she said it, put me in guy-defense-mode. We guys are conditioned to pretty gurls testing us, so I'm thinking maybe she does this to test everyone with good looking eyes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The first thing I noticed was her wedding ring. She has pretty eyes (we were both wearing face masks), but I wasn't at all interested in her. I had looked her up on Google to see if there was any reviews on her. None that I could find, but I did see that she graduated with honors, so that impressed me. I thought she was really good at what she does. She gave me insight about things I didn't know about. I learned a lot. The visit was worth it for me. She up sold me for the optomap ($39) and the dilation ($30). I paid cash. $54 for both as a package deal extra is nothing compared to what other doctors charge. At first, I was only interested in the exam ($89), so I didn't think I needed the other things. I'd give her an A- (the minus for putting me in guy-defense-mode) Her office assistants were nice and professional. I used to work at my older brother's OD shop in college, so I know how customers can be on the phone and in person. COVID-wise: the office assistant in charge of the eye technology, cleaned the machines thoroughly after each use. The office chairs they use for patients are the fuzzy cloth kind, and not the slick leather/vinyl kind. So, they don't clean those. If that bothers you, either bring your own wipes (but remember you have to sit down in it right after you wipe it down).. or, maybe bring a short blanket, to throw over the chairs you sit in (waiting room, eye measuring machine(s), and doctor's office). All of which I did not have to lean back in. Just sit in. Receptionist has 2 pen holders. One that is sterilized and one for used. The chairs in the waiting room have vinyl cushions, but they also aren't sanitized after each use. In every room, the optometrist has hand sanitizer. That should be sufficient for most people. Tip: If you have an appointment, you can pass the Costco glasses/frames section and go straight to the front glass door of the optometrist office. No need to take a number at the glasses/frames desk. Yes, that side is Costco. There is only 2 seats in the waiting room. The receptionist allowed 3 in the waiting room (2 sitting, 1 standing), and 1 that was being helped by the Doctor, but the optometrist assistant was able to assist efficiently after paperwork was filled out. Face masks are required. After the exam was finished, I walked over to the Costco glasses/frames section. I didn't have plans to get glasses, but I picked a number, and got served quickly. I presented my prescription and said "I guess I need to get glasses". After the Costco clerk talked to me at the desk, I was like wow.. Just like the Costco clerks at the membership desk.. rude and not very helpful, so I left as planned. No thanks. The optometrist assistant gave me paper sunglasses. If you get a dilation, OMG.. bring your own sunglasses! Costco exit is in a shaded area, until you step in the parking lot sun and sunlight blurred/blinded me. The paper sunglasses felt like they were cutting into my ears. I think they're for kids. People were staring at me as I was frantically trying to get them on over my glasses. Doing so smooshed my lenses up against my eyes and I was like WTH!!! The paper sunglasses were welcome on my eyes, because I could see again, even if I looked weird. I took a Reddit commenter's advice after getting an eye exam at Costco, to buy prescription glasses at Zenni online (even though the price of frames at Costco is supposedly $1 over their cost). There are 4 rotating Optometrists at this office (which are not advertised in any reviews), plus the owner doctor (independent from Costco). As of this writing, it is still: Dr. Greg Kamin, OD Dr. Nicole Him, OD Dr. Sandeep Kaur, OD Dr. Farah Noory, OD Dr. Quan Pham, OD I won't say which doctor I encountered. I visited Costco Optical for the second time in 10 years since I enrolled with Kaiser Permanente Sr Advantage plan. After my first visit to Kaiser Optical in Fremont for glasses in December, my wife convinced me to visit Costco Optical in San Leandro after waiting a few months. My customer service rep at Costco San Leandro was Yan and she was the most efficient person I ever met. She was pleasant and explained to me their rules on choosing glass frames etc. So for price comparison, I added all my options onto my glasses that I selected and save about $125 from Kaiser. First, customer service sucks except fir the guy who took my order, he was very helpful, but the rest of the lazy ladies I had to deal with when I picked them up were bitter and unhelpful. They are there (like 4 of them) doing no much, they make you take a number from the machine when there is no one in line waiting... and make you wait until they want. So disrespectful fir the customer. And then they treat you like if you are asking for something FREE??? CRAZY! Second, the glasses frames are cheap made. Came in for a set of glasses. Ended up with 2 pairs and didn't have to pay a single penny due to the promotion they had if the second pair are sunglasses on top of my VSP coverage. Only thing I had an issue with is that the lady said I would get a text when it was ready. I never got one. She also told me it would take up to a week but usually would be sooner than that. So I called 4 days in and they told me that I need to wait for the text message. I waited a whole week and I said screw it I called again and they tried to tell me to wait for the text again. But she ended up checking anyways and found that my glasses were already ready. I came in the store to pick my glasses up and she told me that it wasn't switch to text in the system, but a phone call. I then told her I didn't get a phone call either but she didn't really have a response for that... My mother was picking up her glasses, she was given a document with instructions for her to test her glasses. I believe this handout with laminated instructions belongs to Costco and is only to test the glasses. As my mom was reading the instructions the woman rudely interrupted her and told her "you don't have to read the entire laminated hand out" my mom responded by letting her know she was following the instructions to test her glasses. She walked away very upset. If someone does not have the patience to attend seniors they should not be dealing with customers. My mother was already frustrated because of her vision challenges and the woman's customer service made it worse. I hope s management offers her training. I'm order for someone to enjoy their glasses they must test the glasses on site. read more

Great place to get your eyes checked and buy new glasses. However if you want to have them adjusted do not come back. The people at the register have no idea how to adjust your glasses professionally. They do not take detailed measurements and adjust frame accordingly (aka. Pantoscopic/Retroscopic tilt). This will leave you with rough eyesight in a large portion of your lenses. I would recommend looking for a real optician who is available to adjust your glasses. If you just want to bend the temples then you can come here, or do it at home. read more

TL;DR: Make sure to follow their COVID precautions such as using the baskets for try ons, get there at least 45 min before the store closes, and make sure you have an authorization code if you're using insurance to purchase. Costco is a great place to get all you need for glasses at an amazing price. Vision counter for prescription glasses review: make sure you get there early! The store may close at 8:30 (weekday) but the staff starts locking everything and cleaning at 8pm. Yan was very accommodating of my lateness and helped me pick out frames and lenses for both regular glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses well after 8pm. She was quick and efficient while also providing me the service I needed and I didn't feel rushed at all. I was in and out trying and buying my 2 pairs of glasses in 20 minutes. As long as you have an idea of what frames you want the staff can work with you to pick out something similar. Costco also took my vision insurance (VSP) and had a $40 off 2 pairs of prescription glasses offer running. However, when using insurance, I would suggest having an authorization code ready to give the staff so you don't end up making multiple trips like I did before this visit. They take emailed prescription copies so no worries if you forgot that at home. Also, any of the glasses frames can be made into prescription sunglasses. They offer a ton of different sunglass finishes and will work with you to see what works best for you and the frame you chose. Fun fact!: You get all the additional "add-ons" like blue light and UV filter for free on your lenses. Other places will definitely charge for each and every individual thing. Lenses for my regular glasses amount to $80 and for the sunglasses was $100. Frames I saw were ranged from $50-$180+ with all the ones below $100 displayed on the walls and the ones above were in the glass counter. They carried a range of options from generic Kirkland brand to name brands. COVID precautions: If you want to try the frames on, grab a basket or make note of where the baskets are placed. This is for you to place the frames after you've tried them on and so they can disinfect before the next customer tries them. Staff are wearing masks at all times and are seen constantly cleaning and wiping surfaces/frames. Both my glasses took less than a full week (6 days) to be ready for pick up. On day of pick up I was serviced by Yan again and she patiently helped with adjustments without my prompting. She's very good at her job and I can't appreciate her enough for helping me out so much! Just judging by her service I felt really comfortable and well taken care of. Definitely recommend getting your glasses here. read more

Over the course of many years I've had multiple sets of eyeglasses done by Costco, every time they've done fabulous work. Their knowledge and experience shows. I did have an issue with my last pair of glasses and it was based on my preference. It seems the standard for making trifocal lenses has the second lens from the top starting almost in the middle of my field of vision and that was cutting into the center of my field of vision for driving. So, for that set of glasses they adjusted the frames to lower that segment and it was fine. I could have had them cut new lenses, but I elected to go for the adjustment. The important part of all of this is that they advised when I have my next set of lenses made, have the second lens cut at the level as if it were a bifocal. Based on ordering prescription eye glasses only, no exam. I love my doctor at Simply Vision, so I continue to go to her for my yearly eye exams. I do not always find what I like and I don't always like the price, so I shop around before I purchases glasses. I've purchased glasses here twice and the experience is not so bad if you already understand that you're paying super cheap rates for frames and lens (compared to Optometrist offices) and it's Costco (so it's always busy). 1. Browse around to make sure you know what you want. if you have questions or want to try glasses in the enclosed counter, pull a number. 2. Make sure you have a copy of your prescription. If it's electronic, they can give you an email address to send it so they can print it out. 3. Pull a number and wait to be called. 4. Decide if you want transition or not, the price difference is $40. 5. They will call in about a week, more or less, when the glasses are ready for pick-up. If you expect better service, less wait, and more assistance with choosing your frame, I suggest making an appointment at an optometry office. They'll usually assist you in helping you find a good fit and giving tips/ pointers on how to pick the right frame. read more

I would not recommend coming to this optical clinic again. With this pandemic, the Optometrist does not change gloves nor sanitized the chair or any surfaces that might have been touched by previous clients/patients. He washed his gloves in between patients. Then, he touched the door knob to go out then back again inside. I didn't see him washed his hands prior to gloving/ungloving. He needs to be schooled by kindergarten on how to properly do hand washing. To make matters worse, I saw him again walking around inside Costco wearing his blue nitrile gloves away from the Optical clinic. I stopped by a local optician's office and checked out a pair of glasses for over $500. I then decided to check out Costco since I go there a lot. I was surprised to find out that Costco honored my vision plan. Wow! I walked out with some nice glasses, matching sunglasses, and two bifocals for close up viewing for a total of less than $500! The selection seemed as good as what I had seen before, but the prices were a lot less, especially for frames. What a was very please with was the service that Chona provided me at Costco Optometry. She was fabulous and super helpful. I'd give her five stars for sure. I'm giving Costco Optical only four stars because when I got the call from Costco that my four pairs of glasses were ready for pick up, I went there and only three of my four pairs of glasses were ready. Worse, the guy who gave me my glasses was completely useless. When I put the glasses on and asked him how they looked, he said "you tell me, you're wearing them". Not very helpful at all. I was assisted by Chona on 3/31/2021, and my eyeglasses returned from the lab that weekend. Not only did it take only a few days to return, it was the correct lenses. I avoided going to this optical dept because they always had so many people waiting. I discovered after in just two visits why so many people prefer this Costco optical dept. It's well worth the wait. I have only been serviced by two employees thus far and the service has been excellent! They are very bright, cordial, and knowledgeable. My second visit I asked if they had or could order a certain pair of frames that I had been trying to get as a second pair of eyeglasses and although they did not have the frames, they did better than ordering them, she called nearest Costco location that had my frames and asked them to reserve them for me. This is one of the Costco's optical departments that I have experience with that I recommend to all my friends, family, business associates and anyone. read more

I found the staff and the doctors very knowledgeable and friendly, and compared to other optometrists, I can't complain about their prices one bit. I happened to be here to have an eye exam and contact lens prescription done, which costs $89. An exam and prescription for glasses costs around $50ish I believe. Scheduling an appointment with them is pretty easy, but you can't count on dropping in and seeing a doctor, I would think. I was told that you don't actually need to be a Costco member to enter and use the optometrist's office, but if you do need to be a member if you plan on purchasing glasses or contacts from the shop outside the office. read more

I'll keep coming back to Costco Optical because, after some research, they offer the lowest price per box brand of contact lens that I use. But.. DON'T expect much when it comes to customer service! They go by a numbering system, which is all fine and dandy. What gets to me is how mechanical they are about the whole thing. In other words, you DON'T EXIST unless you have the number they call. If you take a break and order food from the food court right next to it, make sure you don't miss them calling your number. Dr. Gary Hagan's office is inside the San Leandro Costco, but not together with the Optical Department of Costco. They are a great office, but people should show them some love on their yelp too if you like their service. =] Anyway, I always get my glasses filled at this Costco. They always have some sort of deal going on with glasses and contacts. The staff is amazing! They are always very friendly and helping with filling my prescription. I always have a hard time picking out frames for myself, but all the staff is really helpful with picking out what looks good on me. This place always gets so busy on the weekend and staff is wonderful with handling such large crowds. I will continue to come here and recommend other try it sometime too. read more

This review is for the receptionist that was handling scheduling for eye exams. I was at Costco earlier today and was trying to schedule an office visit due to eye discomfort/pain. She quickly turned me away and told me to "hang up and call 911" like I was listening to an automatic voicemail. I told her that an optometrist should be able to evaluate something simple like this and she quickly told me to hold and as she came back to the phone she responded that the optometrist does not handle eye problems and again told me to call 911 or see an ophthalmologist somewhere else...okay that is complete bs. The optometrists that work there should get their licenses taken away if they can't easily examine or at least attempt to see what's wrong with my eyes, so I really doubt that receptionist actually asked the optometrist when she put me on hold. I ended up going to another optometry practice nearby and they were able to diagnose me instantly...Costco lost easy money. Shame on the receptionist. read more

I like this place because it's cheap, I got a pair of glasses here that I actually like and feel confident wearing (a first for me), and the customer service is decent. HOWEVER, the reason I'm only giving it three stars is because I can't order more contacts over the phone, which is irritating. Apparently they only accept American Express payments via telephone. So whenever I need to order more contacts, I have to drive all the way over to San Leandro, pay for it in person, then wait a few weeks and drive back to pick them up. I have used Costco for many years, and Yan recently demonstrated why. Recently I visited an ophthalmologist because of flashing and floaters. He gave me an eyeglass exam and said my prescription from Costco was not optimal. It had been nine months since my exam and glasses. I asked Costco to give me a replacement, and Yan said "yes" even tho it was beyond their 3 month replacement warranty. I've used San Leandro Costco for prescription glasses and sunglasses for over 7 years. Considering selection and price, they're unbeatable. Sometimes I've waited 15 minutes to see the optician (who is independent of Costco). Not great, but the optician is convenient and inexpensive and I use the time to check out frames. The receptionist was clear about price range when scheduling the appointment. (If dilation is needed, it costs more.) Typically, Costco staff has helped me select frames because I shop alone. If they seem reluctant, just be clear that you'd appreciate their assistance. I don't imagine that they earn a commission. I originally joined Costco 20 years ago for the optical services and remain thankful that they exist. read more

Today I was stuck in really bad traffic and got there 15 mins late and the optometrist Emily So would not even see me. I guess to them their time is more valuable than ours. It just feels awful. Dr. So and the staffs are friendly. The reason why I gave it a two star because I went to get an EYE EXAM, but when I paid they charged $25 more for Dilated Fundus Exam which I didn't know what is it. They should had told me they charge additional fee for that. Whether it was required or not, they can't just put eye drop on me and charge me extra at the end without telling me upfront. I scheduled for an EYE EXAM only. The total became $84, not $59 as POSTED!!! read more
