My experience with Katie at Extra Space Storage in Costa Mesa was beyond disappointing. From day…read moreone, it felt like she had an issue with me for reasons I still don't understand. Her behavior was unprofessional, petty, and frankly, not what you'd expect from someone managing a customer-facing business. The final straw was when she told me to pack up and leave because I was draining only water -- nothing harmful, nothing dangerous -- just water. She claimed it was against policy, yet when I asked to see where that was stated in the lease agreement, she couldn't provide any clear documentation. Nothing in what she showed me outlined that I was in violation. It felt completely arbitrary and personal. She even made a point to say she's on-site and has seen burglaries and more. Hearing that from a manager actually made me feel less secure about storing my belongings there. Between that and her attitude, I knew this wasn't a place I wanted to leave my property. Katie's handling of the situation showed a serious lack of professionalism and understanding of the actual lease terms. If she's going to enforce rules, they should be clearly written and consistent -- not based on her mood or personal bias. At the very least, she should be trained on how to interpret and communicate policies properly. I would not recommend this location to anyone until there's a serious review of management. After how I was treated, I didn't feel safe or respected, and that's a non-negotiable when choosing a storage facility.

DO NOT RENT FROM ANY PUBLIC STORAGE FACILITY!!…read more Onsite Staff are great people BUT Corporate is what makes this place DECEITFUL and SHADY!! Corporate offices of Public Storage raised our rate 40% in 4 months and after asking around will raise it continuously thereafter every quarter! Nobody tells you when you sign up that they will raise your rate up 40% or more. So why would you think as much. They wait for you to move in get everything settled and Hit you with this increase expecting you to pay it! Here is the kicker! I went online and at the same facility for a bigger unit they offered it for less than what I was paying. This Shady practice shows you they are willing to let renters go just so they can get people to pay the increase. And if they don't and you move out they do it to the next person. I will be reporting to Better Business Bureau as well as telling everyone I know never to rent from this terrible company. I called corporate office and they basically said there is nothing they can do because it's based on demand. even though I told them I see open units at the facility. It took me 10 minutes to find a storage facility closer to my home with better access hours and 25% less than what I am paying. Already confirmed with new place that they only do rate adjustments every 9 months and the maximum they have done was 9% during a high time. This is acceptable. I made a mistake in signing up with PUBLIC STORAGE but I hope this review helps others in not making the same mistake. I truly hope that public storage corporate reads this and gets their act together. I guess for now I will use my only consumer power and move!! Anyone reading this do not get TRICKED like many of us on YELP. READ all the other negative reviews about shady rate hikes!! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Like all storage places, rates increase insanely high. I'm now at over $300 a month. 4 years ago it…read morewas $178 a month. Looks like a comparable unit right now goes for $129 a month. When I first signed up and they warned me prices would start going up after I think the first year? they said I could always just switch units and sign a new contract. But when I tried to do that at the 2.5 year mark after several increases, they said you could only do so if you switched to a new floor entirely... basically making the process harder if you have bulky, heavy things. The place is clean, and access system is nice, but the rates for existing customers vs deep incentives to attract new customers is kind of the slap in the face I needed to close down my unit. Basically only store for the promotional no-rate-increase period and then get out. It's not worth it otherwise.

They keep raising the rent, and the recurring price hikes make it much more expensive than expected. It feels like they offer low introductory rates just to get you in the door. Also, many of the positive reviews appear to come from customers who are encouraged to leave a review when they first sign up, before they've had time to experience the constant rent increases. If you're looking for a storage facility with stable pricing and good long-term value, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

While the location was perfect and the general facility was nice and appeared safe, working with the staff onsite was a hassle from the moment we moved in. Upon arrival they "lost" our reservation in the system, blaming it on some confusion between two reservations booked for the same day, one Carol and one Carolyn. Additionally, we were told we could not use the moving truck we were promised because it was stolen, a lie confirmed later by the manager. We spent half our moving day trying to locate a Uhaul last minute because of this mistake. For the most part our time renting unit was a good experience, with the exception of issues we had paying online. The website had glitches every month. Additionally, if you use the three months free deal, make sure you move in on the 1st. They applied the first 50% off to our prorated three days in the first month. When we asked the manager about it later he told us "You could do it that way. But the person that chose to move you in chose to do it this way." Moving out was also a hassle. Upon move in I specifically asked the terms of move out, including whether or not the last month was prorated. I was assured it was. However, when we went to give notice they told us that we had to pay the entirety of the last month even though we were only going to be in the unit for 5 of those days. We had to rearrange our moving schedule to move out by the end of the month, resulting in our move taking place over two weekends and needing to rent two more Uhauls in addition to the one we needed to move in. After we removed everything from the unit we went to the office to complete the move out with their representative. Their out of office sign was on the door stating they'd be back at 9am, it was 11am and no one was inside. We had to return later that afternoon to complete the move out. Note, they do not have dumpsters onsite for customer use. A week after we move out, I get a text reminding us our storage rent was due on January 1st. I called in and the person I spoke with on the phone was abrasive and unhelpful, he told us whoever we spoke to in the office on our move out day did not process our move out in the system. Eventually, he said he would check the unit to make sure we were fully out and if we were he would reverse the charge for January. We will see if it really happens. Overall, the three month deal and location were not worth it. Between the three Uhauls we had to rent and all the frustration caused, it would have been better and possibly less expensive to go with one of their many competitors in the area.
